WE’RE a little overwrought now.
The N.R.A. understands that. It’s as patient with us as a husband with a tremulous pregnant wife prone to crying jags.
This is just a passing meltdown. We’ll get ourselves back under control soon and things will return to normal.
For decades, when the public has grown more sympathetic to gun control after an attempted assassination or a spike in gun murders or a harrowing school shooting, Wayne LaPierre and his fellow N.R.A. officials have hunkered down to wait for the “emotional period” or “hysteria,” as they call it, to pass.
They rule in the back rooms on Capitol Hill and rein in panicked senators and congressmen who fret that they should support some measly legislation to pretend they are not pawns of the gun lobby.
They defend anyone owning anything with a trigger, reiterating that military-style semiautomatics are just uglier hunting guns.

George Bush senior in intensive care
Former US president George HW Bush has taken a turn for the a worse and is in intensive care after a "stubborn fever" delayed his recovery from bronchitis, a spokesman said this morning.
"He's had a series of setbacks now that have landed him in guarded condition in the intensive care unit," spokesman Jim McGrath told the AFP news agency.
The 88-year-old was first admitted to Methodist Hospital in Houston on November 7 for bronchitis treatment and released on November 19.
But he was readmitted on November 23 after his cough flared up again.
Doctors had initially hoped to have the elder statesman home for Christmas, but he was instead forced to spend the holiday in hospital, where he was joined by his wife Barbara, son Neil and grandson Pierce.
"I wouldn't say he was able to celebrate it in the traditional sense," Mr McGrath said. "His family was with him, and he's conscious and he's able to engage in humorous banter with his doctor."

It looks like San Diego's new mayor, a Democrat and previously member of Congress, feels some freedom to speak his mind:
San Diego mayor takes to L.A. public radio to blast Obama and Congress
In a partial transcript of the session, posted today on KPCC's website, the liberal Democrat first unloads on the GOP.
"I couldn’t believe the kind of people who had come and taken power. Many of them had never had any government experience. They had no respect as it were for government per se. I mean, I don’t know why you run for government office with the intent to close up government."
Filner says half of the Congress didn't believe in science; they thought that "climate change didn’t exist, did not believe in stem cell research, thought that you teach creationism and not evolution." "If you have a group like that, what do you do?" says Filner. "There’s no reaching across the aisle."
Hehe... then he turns on the President:
Filner saves his harshest words for his own party: A President who gives away the store before sitting down to negotiate; Democrats who had run the House for 40 years didn’t understand you can’t legislate as a minority; leadership wasting its time in the weeds on the process of government rather than the politics of trying to win back the House.
"When we were in the minority they would always have motions," he says, for things like defeating the previous question. "Well, who cares about those?" He says nobody knew "what the hell we were talking about and yet we spent all our energy on that."
Glad at least someone of notice is willing to speak out.

In times of old, the victories of US forces over the Native American nations were celebrated. Nowadays, some try to whitewash it because the truth is too widely known for them to celebrate acts of unjust aggression. The Dakota were greatly mistreated and many of those sentenced to death weren't given fair trials. Lincoln knew this and had most of the death sentences commuted, but ordered them carried out in 39 cases (though one of those men was reprieved when testimony casting doubt on his conviction came to light).

That did not fully happen in 1862, but that was only because so many of the able bodied white population was called away to fight the Civil War. The War Between the States marked a pause in westward expansion, though Native Americans were found on both side of the war.

In the spring of 2005, Jim Miller, a Native spiritual leader and Vietnam veteran, found himself in a dream riding on horseback across the great plains of South Dakota. Just before he awoke, he arrived at a riverbank in Minnesota and saw 38 of his Dakota ancestors hanged. At the time, Jim knew nothing of the largest mass execution in United States history, ordered by Abraham Lincoln on December 26, 1862. "When you have dreams, you know when they come from the creator... As any recovered alcoholic, I made believe that I didn't get it. I tried to put it out of my mind, yet it's one of those dreams that bothers you night and day."
Now, four years later, embracing the message of the dream, Jim and a group of riders retrace the 330-mile route of his dream on horseback from Lower Brule, South Dakota to Mankato, Minnesota to arrive at the hanging site on the anniversary of the execution. "We can't blame the wasichus anymore. We're doing it to ourselves. We're selling drugs. We're killing our own people. That's what this ride is about, is healing." This is the story of their journey- the blizzards they endure, the Native and Non-Native communities that house and feed them along the way, and the dark history they are beginning to wipe away.

Replaced both original (20 years old) furnaces and both A/C units 2 summers ago. The difference in efficiencies is AMAZING

re: #38 prairiefire
Good luck, and probably a good thing you're doing it now and not after the new year (May 1). There is a new efficiency rule that would make it more difficult to do thru-chimney exhausts except under certain conditions - the newest high efficiency units require direct venting to the exterior (no more chimney venting required because the exhaust gases aren't warm enough to push up and out - that's how they get their efficiency). That could push your replacement costs higher due to possible relocation of components (if say your current furnace doesn't allow for a direct venting).

Ross Douthat has weighed in on the cultural fallout from the Newtown shootings. He goes after Michael Bloomburg, as you'd expect, but then goes on to smack Wayne LaPierre even harder:
The leading gun control chorister was Michael Bloomberg, and this was fitting, because on a range of issues New York’s mayor has become the de facto spokesman for the self-consciously centrist liberalism of the Acela Corridor elite. Like so many members of that class, Bloomberg combines immense talent with immense provincialism: his view of American politics is basically the famous New Yorker cover showing Manhattan’s West Side overshadowing the world, and his bedrock assumption is that the liberal paternalism with which New York is governed can and should be a model for the nation as a whole.
It’s an assumption that cries out to be challenged by a thoughtful center-right. If you look at the specific proposals being offered by Bloomberg and others, some just look like reruns of assault weapon regulations that had no obvious effect the last time they were tried. Others still might have an impact on gun violence, but only at a cost: the popular idea of cracking down hard on illegal handguns, for instance, would probably involve “stop and frisk” on a huge scale, and might throw more young men in prison at a time when our incarceration rates are already too high.
But instead of a kind of skepticism and sifting from conservatives, after a week of liberal self-righteousness the spotlight passed instead to ... Wayne LaPierre. And no Stephen Colbert parody of conservatism could match the National Rifle Association spokesman’s performance on Friday morning.
It wasn’t so much that LaPierre’s performance made no concession whatsoever on gun restrictions or gun safety — that was to be expected. It was that he launched into a rambling diatribe against an absurdly wide array of targets, blaming everything from media sensationalism to “gun-free schools” signs to ’90s-vintage nihilism like “Natural Born Killers” for the Newtown tragedy. Then he proposed, as an alternative to the liberal heavy-handedness of gun control, something equally heavy-handed — a cop in every school, to be paid for by that right-wing old reliable, cuts to foreign aid.

Even if you think that, this is refreshing to read:
The right-wing view is embittered, paranoid and confused. It opposes anything the establishment supports but doesn’t know what it wants to do instead. (Defund government or protect Medicare? Break up the banks or deregulate them? Send more troops to Libya or don’t get involved? Protect our liberties or put our schools on lockdown?) Sometimes the right’s “just say no” approach holds the establishment at bay — as on climate change and immigration, to date. But sometimes, as the House Republicans are demonstrating in the budget showdown, it makes the eventual defeat that much more sweeping.

Watching the Keystone Cops routine in Congress would be amusing, if the situation weren't so desperate. At this point, it seems that our legislative branch has effectively ceased to function. What he is saying is that the right has prevented the action the establishment left wants in these areas. I don't think Douthat thinks hate is good, but he doesn't want an amnesty without the southern border being locked down.

Look at the last election results regarding Hispanic turnout, and tell me that holding the establishment at bay hasn't already led to sweeping defeat. In an effort to stave off whites becoming a demographic minority the GOP's immigration policy has already led to disastrous political consequences. The same thing will happen as climate change becomes more and more self evident.

I've been hesitant to jump in on this one but I think yours is the first thoughtful comment on the issue. There's been much bitching at sites like Dkos lately about how Obama and the Dems have sold out their progressive supporters, I guess this happens after elections in second terms. The fringes on both sides (yes, MBF - blah blah blah) feed on emotional gratification, outrageous outrages, temper tantrums and counterproductive bullying and are baffled why the politicians they support aren't engaging in the same self destructive behaviour. What both sides need is pragmatic leadership from the top down which means real leaders explaining hard truths to their respective bases. Of course this is unlikely, it's just easier to pander to the unwashed masses and throw them under the bus when convenient.

Don't dismiss the idea so easily. From a progressive point of view he is very much "center right". He hasn't freed all those poor oppressed innocent souls in GITMO, he continues drone strikes, wars in foreign lands, indefinite detention, pragmatic economic policies like not rounding up bankers and capitalists for crimes against humanity, close ties to Israel, etc. It's all based in pragmatism but from a progressive viewpoint he's a moderate conservative.

move him over the u.s. border in any direction and he instantly becomes a center-right politician
i can't really think of any policies of his that could be described as "leftist" - for example, obamacare mandates no non private medical insurance or care. if he is a leftist, then bismark and churchill were leftists
It was also hailed as the conservative solution to the healthcare crisis. Good example.

Moderate Republicans have been losing their seats.
Of 216 House Republicans who ran for reelection, only 14 were defeated, a mortality rate of just over 6%.
Members of the tea party caucus did even better than that; only about 5% were defeated. (The losers included Allen West of Florida and Joe Walsh of Illinois, two especially fiery members whose constituents ran out of patience.)
Which Republicans lost their seats? Moderates and moderate conservatives, disproportionately.
Among the incumbents who ran for reelection, 48 were members of a group called the Republican Main Street Partnership, nonradical conservatives who sometimes call themselves "center right." Seven of those 48 lost their seats — a mortality rate of 15%, more than twice as high as Republicans in general.
When you add retirements and other departures, more than a dozen moderate conservatives won't be coming back next year.

Most people adopt those terms to avoid critical thought. People on their own as individuals are much more interesting and nuanced but issues are complicated. Most of us have only a very basic understanding of economics or science. Social issues and demographics trends are complicated and solutions are often unpleasant realities. People adopt political labels to avoid thinking or learning, The labels come with a whole host of prepackaged solutions already made for us. Individuality is not required and is generally frowned upon.

The term I use most of the time, in describing much of the GOP and the Tea Partying crowd is "reactionary right".
The term "reactionary" itself can be ambiguous out of context. We all "react" to the stimuli in our environment - all living things do.
However, in the context of politics, especially in a nation with political parties, campaigns, elections, and entrenched institutions, "reactionary right" I use to describe the essential views of those who are rejecting recent changes in their society, which they see as an affront to them, and as a group devise goals to return to an earlier era.
"Revanchist" is accurate too, but it implies "taking back", which indeed holds true of much of the Tea Partying crowd.
The policy centers of the GOP are strongly tilted towards idolizing previous eras, of returning somehow to an older order of things.
While the Democratic party is pretty much controlled by entropy, it does have pocket of thinkers who are more actively engaged in finding ideas for our own times and for the near and far futures that are not just business as usual. But, as the link I posted earlier about new San Diego mayor Bob Filner illuminated, there is plenty of blame to go around, for our national political ineptness.

This one's got some quirks, but it's well built and the glass is of the highest quality. Jena remained as good as the West German Zeiss all through the cold war. I'm really excited to have it and can't wait till it warms a smidge (-3 degrees F, clear skies & dropping ;) to go out and try it out.

"I don't think it would make one difference," LaPierre replied. Instead, LaPierre attempted to shift the conversation to felons and "lunatics" who should be arrested if they try to purchase a gun.
But at the same time, NRA ready to fight background checks on private sales. ..
And, if you think the latest gun control debate will be limited solely to legislation to ban semi-autos and "large capacity" magazines, think again. Calls have already been renewed to subject all private sales of firearms to background checks, even among family members and friends, and to end mail-order sales of ammunition.
We knew that this fight was coming. But it's now crystal clear that this latest round is on an expedited track and the corresponding rhetoric has been amped up exponentially.
And the gun nuts lap it up. The NRA doesn't give a shit about the people killed by firearms. Dead bodies are free advertisement for them to help sell more guns.

The NRA is the largest and most active firearms rights organization in the world, with four million members who represent 100 million law-abiding Americans who own firearms.
I bet at least some of the 96 million Americans who own firearms but aren't in the NRA might dispute that the NRA represents them. And seeing as the NRA is universally known of in the circle of those who own firearms, I think their 4% membership ratio sucks. That tells me there are 24 gun owners who say f* the NRA for every one that sends them $10 a year for the gun porn.

Republican Party Too Extreme, Majority Of Americans Say: Poll
For the first time, a majority of Americans now say the Republican Party is too extreme, according to a poll released Thursday by CNN/ORC.
Fifty-three percent of people, including 22 percent of Republicans, said the GOP's views and policies have pushed them beyond the mainstream. The number is up dramatically from previous years. In 2010, fewer than 40 percent thought the party was too extreme.
Democrats were considered to be a "generally mainstream" party by 57 percent in the new poll.

A technique purely for hunting or self defense, I'm sure.
No, it's for target shooting. Anyone who used that sort of 'bumpfire' device to shoot another person would find likely themselves up on charges, even if they were justified. Cops and prosecutors don't like devices like that and they'd use it as evidence of a 'Rambo mentality'. If one wants such a device, the rifle associated with it should be kept partially disassembled in a locked case or safe unless it is being taken out for target shooting. Keep a different, more defensible gun for self-defense.

Target shooting? That video didn't show anyone aiming at anything at all specific that I could see. Unless there's another way of doing the bump fire technique, I'm not sure how firing from belt loop height is going to hit any kind of target. Enlighten me if I'm just being goofy.

Here in Chicagoland it would mostly be either subdivisions or forest preserves if some golf courses closed. May of the Golf courses are along the Chicago or Des Plaines rivers and could not be used for a wind farm due to the threat to migratory birds.

I'm so tired of labels I could scream. As soon as someone (usually a Fox News Drone) says the word "liberal", my mind shuts down and I realize I am not having a conversation with a thinking person.

I was going to add "fun shooting" to the post but was afraid of the reaction. That sort of shoot involves shooting breakable targets set out on a range, up to and including old cars.
And you can 'bump-fire' from the shoulder as well. That would provide better control, but it still would not be all that useful. Full auto fire from an AR-15 is overrated, and is mostly used for close-quarters room clearing and anti-ambush 'mad minute' protective fire.

re: #178 freetoken
I still think, Whacko™ is the best "catch-all" term. Although now, I'll have to distinguish between the mentally disturbed and the just plain Whacko™.

Everyone is a government dependent when you look at it through the funhouse mirror prism of the loony bin. You rely on government to maintain law and order (cops and firefighters, rescue personnel)? You're dependent.
Education? Dependent upon teachers.
Disabled or retired after spending entire life working? Dependent.
Need to ride roads, bridges, or (especially mass transit)? Dependent.

Deconstructing the 5 most ridiculous myths about Barack Obama
1. Obama has played more golf than any president in history
This isn't even close to being true. Now, there's no question that he plays on a regular basis: 104 rounds from January 2009 through Aug. 4 of this year, the last time he played, according to Mark Knoller, the longtime White House correspondent for CBS Radio. That puts him about in the middle when compared with other duffers-in-chief. It's less than Bill Clinton, and a lot less than Dwight Eisenhower, who played more than 800 rounds over eight years — four times as often as Obama plays.
And why is it an outrage if the president, who heads one of three branches of government, golfs 104 times in three-and-a-half-years, but the head of another branch of government, the Speaker of the House, plays four times as much? You heard correctly: John Boehner once told Golf Digest that he plays upwards of 100 rounds a year. Seems like a double standard, no?

The vacation myth is just that. A myth.
Presidents don't get vacations. They get a change of scenery as Nancy Reagan observed.
Many presidents, including GW Bush, didn't care for DC, so they spent as much time away from DC as possible. For some, that meant going to Camp David. For others, it was going to their own homes/ranches.
But they worked at those locations and made the tough decisions throughout.
For instance, there's a reason that the Camp David Accord is called the Camp David Accords and not the White House accords. It was negotiated and signed by the parties at Camp David, not the White House despite the President's presence. Being at the WH creates a fishbowl atmosphere and more media scrutiny than at the alternative locations.
Focus on location ignores that the President is on call and on the job 24/7/365.

Apple Paid CEO Tim Cook 'Just' $4.17 Million in 2012
Tim Cook may run the most valuable company in the world, but you wouldn't know it from his pay this year.
The Apple CEO made just $4.17 million in 2012, according to a new SEC filing from Apple. That is certainly a salary many workers would be happy to have, but it represents a 99% decline from the $376 million Cook was paid last year.
That may come as a surprise at first considering that Apple's market cap has grown to more than $480 billion this year under Cook's leadership, but the decline in his pay is due to a technicality rather than anything to do with his performance.
Cook was granted a massive amount of stock options totaling more than $376 million when he was promoted to CEO in 2011, much of which will vest in the coming years. Given that, Apple's Compensation Committee decided not to grant Cook any additional stock options this year, which is why his pay out appears so much lower.
Still, it's a striking drop in pay, especially when you consider that several other top Apple executives who work under Cook made more than 10x as much as him this year thanks to the stock options they were awarded.

Somewhere out there, the RWNJ's are twitching:
NRA President Defends David Gregory, Knocks DC Law
National Rifle Association President David Keene said Thursday that NBC host David Gregory shouldn't be prosecuted for displaying an empty high capacity magazine on "Meet the Press," even though it may have violated Washington, D.C. law. Gregory held up the magazine Sunday during an interview that was taped in Washington with NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre. A city police spokesperson said earlier this week the agency was investigating the matter.
"No, I don't think so," Keene said in the interview Thursday on CNN when asked whether Gregory should be prosecuted. "There are two lessons for him there. One, don't ask the government what's legal and what isn't legal because half the people you ask don't know. And secondly, that's a silly felony. It's a felony in Washington, D.C., to own that magazine or to be caught with a cartridge. So I really think what David Gregory did, while he was inadvertently flouting the law, was illustrated in a very graphic way, perhaps not intentionally, but in a graphic way just how silly some of these laws are."
"I'm not a vindictive guy that wants to go after David Gregory," Keene added. "I think it illustrates the craziness of some of the laws."

That's quite the haul and the company's product line and profits may justify it (and when combined with his stock option vestments, he's going to do quite well over the rest of his time with the company).
It's nice work if you can get it.
Most people never attain those kinds of jobs or job opportunities. Instead, most are working to see a fraction of that annual salary over their entire lifetime. And for most, that's enough. Others strive for greater and fall short. The problems begin where compensation and performance diverge such as when a company is failing but the chairman gets a bonus all while firing those around him.

Here's a law that would relate directly to Newtown -- prosecute gun owners for murder when their children/relatives take their arsenal and go shoot up a school. You know, assuming that gun owner isn't killed first.
And before I get flamed for that, no I'm not serious. I'm only offering a law directly related to the shooting, since that seems to be his thing.

You should be serious. If a gun you legally possess is used for a crime by someone else, you, as the owner, should be legally culpable for said crime.
Of course, it would require guns to be permanently stamped in a way that can't be altered (like filing off a serial number) and having a firearms registry (at least for assault weapons, including handguns). If I need insurance/license etc. to own a damn car, no reason not to have one for a deadly weapon.
Make people secure their weapons properly, and by tracking sales to owners and making them culpable, you immediately take a big chunk out of straw-man purchases.

Or, firearms equivalent to dram shop liability. Owners/sellers of firearms are potentially liable when firearms used in commission of crime.

Yes, obvious caveat, I didn't want to write a whole diatribe on it. But I think people should be forced to make sure they are properly securing their weapons. If something is stolen out of a safe or something, well, it'll happen. But think of how many accidental deaths there are, not to mention crimes committed with weapons that were bought by either straw-purchasers or second-hand, and I think it's a viable way to help decrease gun-violence while technically not stepping on the 2nd-amendment rail of politics.
