A long road to travel yet in this country:
Atheists applaud Rep. Holt for Darwin Day resolution, fight to protect evolution in public schools
The Secular Coalition for America joins the American Humanist Association in commending Rep. Rush Holt (D-NJ) for his introduction of a resolution to recognize February 12 as Darwin Day, and encouraging additional representatives to sponsor the resolution.
The resolution would recognize the anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth as an annual worldwide celebration of science and humanity. Darwin proposed the scientific theory of evolution by natural selection and detailed the scientific theory in his book “On the Origin of Species.”
Rep. Holt worked with the American Humanist Association to introduce the resolution. The American Humanist Association is one of the Secular Coalition’s 11 member organizations.

The History Channel, ahem, is going to broadcast yet another series on…. (insert drumroll)… The Bible!
In fact, it’s called “The Bible” and here is the trailer:
The production is pretty much religiously oriented, even if the producers did tap a few Bible scholars to try and fill in some historical details of the alleged time periods.
The American populace believe the stories of the Bible are “history”, that’s why half of them are creationists.

How villagers in Mali helped drive out the occupying Islamists
The French beat back the sudden Islamist advance south into Diabaly with heavy air power, but it turns out they had some help: a spontaneous network of residents who responded to the capture of their farming community by risking their lives to channel intelligence out of the town.
“Everyone was calling,” said the mayor, Oumar Diakite, who was out of town when Diabaly was attacked and then was summoned by the governor. Diakite compiled the reports in real time — working next to detailed computer grids of the area that had been saved from U.S. development projects in the area’s complex canal system — and reported the co-ordinates to the military, which relayed them to the French command.
The townspeople’s response will pose a serious problem for the rebels if it is replicated elsewhere. Fighting an insurgency against a more powerful force is hard, but it’s even harder without local complicity.

Roughly 57.64 percent of the contiguous United States was in at least “moderate” drought as of January 22, an improvement from 58.87 percent a week earlier, according to the Drought Monitor. But the worst level of drought, dubbed “exceptional,” expanded slightly to 6.36 percent, up from 6.31 percent of the country.

Allen West slams female soldiers: Why aren’t women in the NHL?
“I have to tell you, if this is the case, then why do we have separate hockey leagues?” West said on CNN. “Women should be out there playing ice hockey with the guys in the NHL. We should not have a WNBA. I can’t shoot a three-pointer, but there are ladies who could certainly take me to the hoop. Maybe they should be competing with Kobe Bryant.”
The former congressman and Iraq veteran blasted the “social experiment” earlier in the day on his Facebook page, suggesting that women could not be as effective soldiers as men. He warned that opening front-line positions to women “could potentially lead to the demise of our military.”
“GI Jane was a movie and should not be the basis for a policy shift,” he wrote on Facebook. “I know Martha McSally, have known women who are Apache and Cobra helicopter pilots, and served with women who were MPs, but being on the ground and having to go mano y mano in close combat is a completely different environment.”

Because they ran out of ideas a long time ago.
That’s why they have WWE running on the Friday night prime time slot. In this case an outside production company can produce two hours weekly for them and get them twice the audience as one of SyFy’s typically lame “SciFi” (but these days mostly fantasy) series.

‘course, to be fair, Scifi has never really been known for its freshness. Growing up, I can remember finding various scifi series from the 90s, 80s, and even late 70s. And those were interspersed with a generous helping of old scifi films and the odd original production, like the one year I remember that having a show about video game tournaments. You know, back when when multiplayer usually meant big honking game booths wired into each other with more cable than the Golden Gate Bridge.

My view is that most of the Science Fiction themes were already introduced to the American public in the 1960’s TV series, or maybe the early 70’s if you want to include concepts as found in the Six Million Dollar Man.
Since then American TV has been mostly reworking old material. Oh, there are a few new ideas thrown out here or there every decade, but the innovations in stories are surprisingly few.

Europeans Warned to Evacuate Benghazi
Several European governments urged their citizens to evacuate the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi in response to what the U.K. described as “a specific and imminent threat to Westerners,” highlighting jitters in the region after last week’s deadly hostage siege at a natural-gas facility in Algeria.
The U.K. Foreign Office didn’t provide further detail as to the nature of the threat in Benghazi. The U.K., like the U.S., had advised its nationals against all travel to the city after the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, which killed four Americans, including the ambassador to Libya.
The Foreign Office, in its alert Thursday, advised any British nationals who remain to leave immediately. Germany and the Netherlands later also urged their citizens to leave the Libyan city.
The U.S. reiterated a previous warning against all travel to Benghazi

In many ways, I see it as a deconstruction of the traditional zombie story, focusing more on the human element and just how easy it is for people to become monsters when there is no authority and resources are slim. Survival of the fittest ceases to be a quip and starts becoming a way of life.

North Korea slams Kim Jong Un plastic surgery reports
SEOUL – North Korea has finally responded to persistent rumors that leader Kim Jong Un had plastic surgery to look like his revered grandfather, issuing an angry denial criticizing what it called “sordid” media reports.
…“The false report … released by enemies is a hideous criminal act that the party, state, army and people can never tolerate,” the official Korean Central News Agency said Wednesday. Insisting that the very idea of Kim, who is in his late 20s, undergoing plastic surgery is “unimaginable,” KCNA flatly rejected what it described as the “sordid hackwork by rubbish media.”
While the focus of the commentary’s fury was the South Korean media, it seems Pyongyang’s anger was triggered by a report by China’s Shenzhen TV last week that cited a diplomatic source who had spoken to a North Korean official, who confirmed the plastic surgery rumors

Missouri Republican proposes bill to require teaching of ‘intelligent design’
The Missouri Standard Science Act states the theory of evolution must be taught side-by-side with intelligent design in public elementary and secondary schools. The bill also requires any textbook that discusses evolution to “give equal treatment to biological evolution and biological intelligent design.”
Proponents of intelligent design, a variant of creationism, believe the complexity of life cannot be adequately explained by natural processes such as biological evolution.
The bill was introduced by State Rep. Rick Brattin, and cosponsored by State Reps. Andrew Koenig and Kurt Bahr. All three lawmakers are Republicans.
Brattin introduced a nearly identical bill last year. He told local media outlets the bill was “just good science” and promoted “objectivity in the science room.”
My theory is that Republican politicians are a bunch of small dick, small brained theocrats who can go fuck themselves.

Let’s see if some gossip and baby pictures can revive this thread:
EXCLUSIVE: Former call girl Ashley Dupré whose trysts with New York Governor Eliot Spitzer ruined his political career is pictured for the first time with new baby
Ashley Dupré, 27, had baby girl Izabel Jagger Earle on November 10
last year
A friend told MailOnline: ‘Izabel is one of the best things that’s ever happened to Ashley’
These are the first photographs of former call girl Ashley Dupré’s adorable baby girl taken on Thursday as she visited her own clothing store.
Izabel Jagger Earle was born at Jersey Shore Medical Center on November 10, 2012 at 4.11pm and is the 27-year-old’s first child. The baby girl, whose father is Dupré’s fiancé TJ Earle, weighed 7lbs and was 21 inches.
Miss Dupré visited her store, Femme by Ashley which sells swimwear and lingerie, with her daughter on Thursday afternoon in Red Bank, New Jersey.

Two American TV shows, of different eras, both of which proved to be quite popular and enduring, I offer up as, to use a mathematical term, eigenvectors, from which we can construct the space-fabric of American commercial, fiction-story television:
In other words, any American tv series episode story can be represented as a combination of some subset of the super-set of those two show’s episodes.

Once you accept the fact that “Event Horizon” was a movie based on the test of the first warp capable ship in the 40k universe, ….
From IMDB:
According to the DVD documentary, the first cut of the film had a longer “Visions from Hell” sequence, more blood, and a different, though similar, ending. The test audience didn’t like it, so it was re-cut with an alternate ending involving what director Paul W.S. Anderson called “The Burning Man Sequence.” The second test audience didn’t like that version, and the film was edited again. The final cut is a less-intense hybrid of both test screenings, with significantly less gore.
According to the DVD commentary, sequences deleted from the “Visions of Hell” include orgies and sadomasochism killing the Event Horizon’s original crew.

Munich Re Says World Crop Insurance Costs Top Record on Drought
Global crop insurance claims were the highest ever last year after drought cut yields in the U.S., historically the biggest grower of corn and soybeans.
Claims worldwide were worth about $23 billion in 2012, with $15 billion going to growers in the U.S., said Karl Murr, who heads the agriculture unit at Munich Re, the world’s biggest reinsurance company. About 85 percent of farmland is insured in the U.S., compared with 20 percent globally. U.S. corn and soybean harvests slid to a six-year low in the past season after the most severe dry spell since 1956.

Inside Mississippi’s Last Abortion Clinic
I was found in a shoebox,” says McMillan. “Abandoned at birth, naked, in the middle of the night in Alexandria, Louisiana.” A young couple adopted him.
McMillan, 69, is known at the clinic as the guy who throws the plastic babies into your car window. He’s clad in bright yellow rain pants not because of the weather, but because the owner of the house behind him turns the sprinkler on him each morning.
“I call myself a peacemaker. What did Jesus say in the Beatitudes? He said, ‘Blessed are the peacemakers.’ Who are we trying to make peace between? A mother and a child. The No. 1 instinct is that between a mother and child. If you don’t believe me, go to the zoo.”
Four years ago, McMillan, who says he has been arrested 69 times at abortion clinics, threatened one of the clinic’s doctors. Since then, a court order has kept him 50 feet away from the clinic door. “I said, ‘Your days are numbered, just like mine,’” McMillan says. “They said it was a threat. I said that was a religious liberty, a point of view I had.” Still, some clinic staffers are worried about harassment from protesters; one of the clinic’s doctors dons an alien mask each time he comes in.
“We’re telling government this has got to end and we’re willing to suffer to change it,” McMillan says. “We’re not going to shoot anybody.”

re: #150 FemNaziBitch
Coal is on the way out for eminently sensible environmental and economic reasons.
Natural gas is cheaper - significantly so. It’s less polluting at the smokestack, so it’s cleaner burning and results in less pollution of all kinds. Substituting natural gas for coal means cheaper energy costs and lower costs to the energy generators who pay for the raw energy materials and the equipment to try and clean them through the smokestack.
A coal burning plant has to expend significant coin to try and reduce emissions to a comparable level for a similar natural gas plant. Building a natural gas plant becomes cheaper. Fracking means that natural gas sources are more plentiful and further reduces the costs (though the long term environmental costs are still being figured out due to potential pollution to aquifers, etc.) though it may still be less than the costs due to coal mining (either strip mining or deep mining).

Because at this point in time there’s a better chance that they can blame Obama for Benghazi than Sandy Hook. That’s about the gist of it. I can damn-near guarantee that if the Sandy Hook shooter had been a person who lost his job because his employer made cutbacks due to Obamacare (even though it would be complete bullshit), then we’d hear nothing of Benghazi. Everything would be focused on blaming PBO for the shooting.

OK Lizards, this mommy lizard is about to say goodbye to her baby lizard tommorrow. He’s going off to be evaluated at a vocational rehabilitation school for 18-24 yr olds with disabilities. For a month. He’ll be 19 soon, this is the longest he’s ever been away from home. I’m doing my best not to cry or show too much emotion because, well, I want him to feel like this is new adventure, a pathway to adulthood and independance. But wow is this harder than I thought. I’m a mess, lol.
After the month is over, he comes home and we wait for word on when he goes back and for how long, what they will (and won’t ) be able to do for him, etc. I guess I should hold back the tears for when he’s actually gone for the long term, yes?

I wish him luck. If I may, don’t cry or be too emotional around him if you can avoid it. I’m not sure if it’s been said, nor will I ask what disability he has, but I think a parent being too emotional around a child over something that is very new and difficult will have a negative reinforcement. Especially for a cognitive or learning disability where a parent’s emotional response may be construed as fear; “Mom is crying, therefore this can’t be good.”
I have a good friend and a distant family relation (one of those sister’s husband’s uncle’s brothers deals) who have autistic children in their early teens. Doesn’t take much to change their whole disposition, especially the emotional state of a parent. It’s tough on them to keep themselves at a pretty neutral state of mind, but it helps the kid keep an even keel.
Good luck.

He’s high functioning autistic/Asperger Syndrome. And you’re right. When we first found out he was accepted to be evaluated, he was scared and didn’t want to go. But over the last few months my husband and I have worked really hard to show him what an adventure it will be. Once he saw the place and took a tour, it was much easier for all of us to be optimistic. It worked, he’s excited and ready to go, mostly. I’m the one who’s a mess now, lol. This is why the husband is driving, so I can cry on the way home after we drop him off.

I can think of a few people in recent history that would take issue with the US Government suddenly looking upon “hacking” as a positive thing that helps our nation. Andrew Auernheimer, a man who is currently awaiting sentencing for releasing information that AT&T left on a public facing webserver, probably isn’t terribly amused by the idea of a National Day of Civic Hacking. Aaron Schwartz, who recently took his own life as a result of the prosecution that followed what many considered to be real civic hacking, would probably not be willing to join in the festivities on June 1-2 at his local hackerspace were he still alive today.

“hacking”, in actual programming parlance, just means a clever way of doing stuff. Hacking into stuff is different from just hacking. And hacking of either sort is different from hacking at MIT, which means climbing around areas of buildings you’re not supposed to be in and is hella fun.

The filibuster reform isn’t really much of a reform, it’s a tiny incremental step. However, since there’s an actual threat of the Democrats becoming a minority in the senate, I’m not certain right now is the time to completely undercut filibuster ability, either. I think filibuster shit needs reform, but the actual problem is the GOP itself, not the process.
I’m kind of in the middle about it. It’s nice they got a little something pushed forwards, I wish they’d gotten more but then I’d be much more worried about the senate flipping.
And I don’t think Obama is happy with the filibuster reform stuff, probably. So I’m not getting the connection to ‘don’t question the whitehouse’.

Oh right, I remember a Swiss friend of mine telling me about the sad case of a woman applying to change the amount she paid because all her children had died in an accident, and she’d been paying with the assumption they’d all be going to school, etc.
Anyway, rich people in the US can get away with paying very little too; her husband is a Swiss resident, Switzerland is a nice place, and I’m going to guess she’s becoming a citizen for those reasons rather than as an elaborate tax dodge. Swiss citizenship is also very good for international travel, if you’re into that sort of thing.

I will preface this by saying that I don’t know much about the specific laws regarding how weapons are allowed to be *transported* in Switzerland, but here’s my take on it:
Everyone (well, not everyone, but most men and now quite a few women since they extended voluntary military service to women) has a military-style rifle, keeps it at home and maintains it.
The kicker is that you can’t have any ammunition at home. That is kept at the depot and there are pretty strict penalties when people get hold of it, because that’s inevitably when accidents happen.
Personal gun ownership I know nothing about but I don’t think it’s any more or less than in other European countries, so I guess it’s pretty low. People aren’t “into guns” particularly (apart from the nutters of course - there are nutters everywhere).
Basically, people in military service own rifles and train with them every so often, but don’t have any bullets at home unless someone fucks up. If there were ever a national emergency requiring a military response, people would assemble at their local depots and load up, as regulated by the (fully professional) army leadership.

Yeehaw. Another dog and pony show at Davos.
I’m not following that, but this came across my Twitter feed:
George Soros backs Guatemalan president’s call to end war on drugs
Billionaire philanthropist George Soros said the war on drugs had endangered political stability and security in many countries
[…]
“Drug policy has endangered political stability and security in many countries, and not just in Latin America,” he said, citing Mali as one of several African countries to suffer.
Soros told a press conference that austerity was encouraging politicians, even in the US, to rethink the war on drugs. “Incarceration is hugely expensive … The cost of alternatives is smaller than the cost of incarceration,” he said.
The billionaire philanthropist was speaking alongside the Guatemalan president, Pérez Molina, who announced that he would host a meeting of Latin American leaders to discuss the issue in June. The gathering will involve several groups including the Beckley Foundation and Soros’s own organisation. “Prohibition, this war on drugs, has seen cartels grow and the results are not what we looked for,” Molina said. “There is a new trend towards drugs now – not war, but a new perspective and a different way of dealing with the problem.”
Molina is determined to use Davos to shift the focus of the drugs debate from morality to science. He told the Observer last week that drug money had penetrated Guatemala’s judicial system and security forces, and that he favoured a regulatory approach to drugs, rather than the extremes of a full-blown war on drugs or a policy of liberalisation.

Good luck, Mom. :-)

Really, Mississippi? Really??
Mississippi GOPers Pushing Bill To ‘Assert The Sovereignty Of The State’
This quote about sums it up:
Numerous experts and historians consulted by the newspaper ridiculed the measure.
“The Neutralization of Federal Law’?” Robert McElvaine, professor of history at Millsaps College, said. “I am astounded to see such a measure introduced in the 21st century. Do the authors of the bill see Mississippi as part of the United States?”
Indeed.
Hey, Mississippi douche canoes - you can pass your stupid law, provided you give up all claims to any federal aid of any sort.
Deal? Thought not.

Kosher establishments are prohibited from serving non-kosher on their premises, and they have a supervisor on site while food is being stored, prepared and served. I do not think that Halal is that stringent.
You’re correct, halal isn’t as strict. No one is required to be on premises to monitor things, and it’s okay to serve other food as long as no non-halal items (or utensils that have been used to prepare them) comes in contact with the halal ones.

I think the concentration on the Nazis as the big enemies of the Jews have kind of lulled people into thinking their antisemtism was unusual in Europe at that time. It wasn’t. Luther’s antisemitism was especially virulent, but you can find virulent antisemitism in other countries, too. If Germany had ‘won’ WWI and imposed crippling sanctions on France, then France might have been the one to get all fascist, scapegoat Jews, and produce some Hitler-type.
Mass murder and persecution of Jews in Europe wasn’t new; the Nazis industrialized it. That was the only real difference.

What do you expect from a state with a majority slave population before the Civil War? There are still a bunch of ignorant rednecks there who pine for the days of Jim Crow.
Dear Mississippi,
Andrew Jackson called. He wanted me to remind you about his thoughts on nullification:
“I consider, then, the power to annul a law of the United States, assumed by one State, incompatible with the existence of the Union, contradicted expressly by the letter of the Constitution, unauthorized by its spirit, inconsistent with every principle on which It was founded, and destructive of the great object for which it was formed.”

Indeed. And to add to your point about Luther, I believe Hitler heavily referenced Luther in Mein Kempf. I believe it was only fairly recently that the Lutheran Church explicitly denounced the Anti-Semitism of his work. And that’s scary to think about with France but considering Petain and Vichy, you’re probably right. Well, sure. As well as antisemitism we had anti-Italianism and anti-Irishism. You said we didn’t have much of a history of antisemitism. We do. Which makes sense, since most of the immigrants to the US came from places with histories of antisemitism.

In the Southern US, antisemitism was very close to the level of that subjected to African-Americans, and were specifically targeted by racist organizations like the KKK - this was one of the reasons that Jewish people rode side-by-side with other Civil Rights activists, and were assaulted (and in many cases, murdered) because of it.

Indeed and to be honest with you, that’s why I am skeptical of many Southern evangelicals who claim to love Israel. I mean the doomsday crap I think is bad enough but you can’t forget what happened to people like Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner. Scary to think that wasn’t even 50 years ago. Jews were and to a degree still are portrayed in this country as the driving force behind left wing movements. Anti-Communism(and leftism as a whole) in this country always had a very not so subtle Anti-Semitic edge to it.

You’re right. I guess what I should have said is that the American brand of anti-semitism is nowhere near as horrific as the European and Middle Eastern versions.
Could that be in part attributed to the fact that those societies are older? I mean I see nothing unique about American society that suggests that it would have been immune from the very violent Anti-Semtiism of the Middle Ages had there been European-American civilization in the Americas at that time. In some ways, we are better, I agree. I think we as a whole do a better job integrating immigrants than many societies do.

Even so, there is a long history of Jewish settlement in the South, many did find a home and established communities.

A lot of the nutters still talk about the Bilderbergs and “the bankers” (i.e., DA JOOZ) as being driving forces of every conspiracy known to man.
They’re not subtle about it at all.

Keep repeating a lie over and over and people will start to believe it. (Totally not Godwining here, just pointing out an observable fact)
Obama is no leader of people. His wish is pure Marxist that will leave us as slaves to a communistic government. #ShutdownDC #TGDN— Bill Periman (@BillPeriman) January 25, 2013

Yeah I believe New Orleans has had a vibrant Jewish community since its founding.

Shit whenever I hear Bill Donahue of the Catholic League, it’s obvious what he’s doing especially because he’s not exactly subtle in blaming Jewish studio heads, filmmakers, entertainers, etc for Anti-Catholicism. Drives me nuts. I’m very sensitive when it comes to Anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry because I’ve seen the prejudice first hand from relatives.

Bet that if you asked this dipshit what Marxism or communism actually is he couldn’t even begin to form a coherent answer. Oh and if they shut down DC then what? Another thing that would leave him babbling in a corner.

They know that Obama is one and that’s all you need to know. Have many of them actually read Marx? No, because they’re not reading commie babel! The fact of the matter is Obama is more closer to being a centrist than a liberal even.

re: #218 iossarian
Someone point out the other day that it isn’t like that anymore.
Now they keep guns in depots like everyone else.
