Been a while since we’ve had a comic book thread. Thanks Charles. That is a very stark cover - and very apropos, methinks.

Shit going on currently make me think about the Anti-Life Equation and Darkseid all the time.
Amid all his wild, goofy stuff, Kirby’s vision of Apocalyps is a very modern pantheon of very modern evil (contrasted with the New Gods, who are pretty much Indo-European boilerplate) and incredibly relevant in how they incarnate human evils as opposed to malicious external forces.

It is a gun owner’s responsibility to keep up with the law, just as it is a ham radio operator, a business owner, a truck driver, &c.
Sounds like another one of those “responsible conservatives” who blame everyone but themselves when they don’t take responsibility. News at 11.

Cambridge spy seminars hit by whispers of Russian links as three intelligence experts resign
The Telegraph, by Lydia Willgress and Luke Heighton, 17 December 2016
But he admitted Russian involvement was “possible” amid a “cascade” of Russian intelligence-related activities.
He said: “After the heady days of post-Cold War and the belief that we were moving the Russians into a rules-based international system, we seem to be going very rapidly in the opposite direction.
“Whether it’s cyber activities, their apparent general malevolence and disruption, what you’re hearing is alleged to have taken place in the United States - and there is no reason to suggest the United States has made this up - it’s a catalogue of activities.
“Television outlets like Russia Today are running around all over the place. There is a lot of Russian activity. It is perfectly plain that the Russians are in a hyperactive mode and this seems to be on the face of it orchestrated by Mr Putin, and frankly I find it very worrying.”
re: #15 MsJ
“…The informant, an American academic who teaches in Britain, made contact late that summer with one campaign adviser, George Papadopoulos, according to people familiar with the matter. He also met repeatedly in the ensuing months with the other aide, Carter Page, who was also under F.B.I. scrutiny for his ties to Russia.
…..
The New York Times has learned the source’s identity but typically does not name informants to preserve their safety.”
That’s probably plenty of identification for a Russian assassin.

Here’s why I agree with this tactic:
Schossberg is a racist. Right now, racists and Nazis are acting out because they think they represent a majority, and especially represent a majority of those who control the country. We have to change that.
The first amendment clearly means we can’t lock them up. But they have to learn that they are not only not the majority, but that we are not going to let them get continue to act like racists, Nazis, and misogynists out in the open. And the way to do that is to show that not only are there more of us, but that we will not back down.
There is no other way to stop them that does not affect our rights as citizens.
This is not the same thing as going after someone for not liking pineapple on pizza. People like Schossberg are the types that if you give them an inch, they’re going to go for a mile. They have to be shamed as early as possible, and they have to be made to understand they will not be tolerated.

Feral hogs are extremely dangerous and destructive. All efforts at control appear to have failed and their numbers continue to grow. One big reason for this is that there are no apex predators left, cougars and wolves, who might be able to control the hogs. Coyotes and foxes can pick off the occasional piglet but it is very risky business for them and they will usually shy away unless they are starving. Amateur suburbanite hunters are not up to the job and they can be dangerous and destructive themselves. The state has recently authorized the use of poison, which I completely oppose for a number of reasons. The solution, horrible though it is, will probably involve extermination sweeps by professional hunters recruited, supervised and paid by the state.
No difference huh? Mayhaps take notice of the fact that you could only bring yourself to spell one out. That should probably have been your first clue that you’re utterly full of shit.

Honestly, I don’t even see it as a confrontation and damn sure not mob action. He had a protest party outside his house. There was art and music, there were people explaining latinx-American history. We should all be so lucky. Oh and he had hella protections. Other than that… he’s been questioned by the media, his private contracts and authority as an officer of the court challenged. All of that is within reason to protect the groups he targets and actively courted via his website. He’s also been ridiculed
online by his fellow citizens…which we know much of the press equates with genuine state oppression, but it’s not.
We cannot take ridicule and peaceful protest from the powerless. We cannot.
I’ve cut my brother-in-law (my wife’s brother) off. I suspect my wife will cut him off as well as soon as she reads the same E-mails he sent today.
He sent me an E-mail about the Texas school shooting this evening. He lives five miles from the school, and knows a couple of the students killed (as he is a teacher in a different nearby school).
I don’t know what’s happened to him over the past year, but he’s gone completely round the bend on conservaderp. (Perhaps it has something to do with his quadruple bypass last year?)
Everything from magic balancefairyism (neither party represents the people) to the Clinton Foundation to “how dare liberals politicise this tragedy.”
After I got back a few minutes ago from lowering the village’s flags to half-staff (ordered by Donald Trump until sunset 22 May), I opened that pile of run-on derp and decided “that’s it. No more.”
——-
The Clinton Foundation is doing fine and donations to that organisation have not dried up.
I can’t help it if you’ve been taken in by propaganda. The tax filings for the Clinton Foundation are available to anyone who wants to see them.
Unless you feel Charity Navigator is also part of some evil librul plot to hide “Clinton Crimes” ™.
There is a warning flag on their otherwise near-perfect score, because of multiple repeated political attacks on the organisation. Not financial issues, conservative propaganda.
You say “both sides are the same” and then only cite conservative examples of that.
The Clinton Foundation stuff was cooked up a discredited writer working for the Koch Brothers, Steve Bannon, and the Mercer family, promoted by the Mercer Family, then to the conservative network of “serious” blogs, then graduated to FOX News Channel where State Media incessantly hammered it.
It is propaganda, it is a lie, and this shows that even college education is not a defence against propaganda.
You’re partially right on one thing: Conservative politicians don’t work for the people. My own representative is on record saying he does not represent Democrats.
All the paedophiles in Congress arrested over the years? Oh yeah, conservatives. How about rape apologists such as Ken Starr (who for the Republicans spent millions investigating a consensual blow job)? Oh yeah, he no longer works for Baylor University in your state after covering up a string of rapes there.
Speaking of rape apologists, why are they always conservatives?
goprapeadvisorychart.com (a near endless collection of conservative rape apologetics).
And which party is it that worships at the altar of the gun? I’m sorry to hear of the school shooting today in Texas. That was only the first today. There was another later in New Jersey this afternoon outside a high school graduation. As a teacher I would think you’d be concerned about more children killed this year than in the military (including non-combat deaths). Which party is it that wants to do something about that?
“No Way to Prevent This Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens” (The Onion on the school shooting in your state. This is an evergreen article where they just change the photo, details, &c. Look at the bottom of the article for links to others precisely with the same headline. They have scores of this same article over the years. The point is to mock conservatism’s “thoughts and prayers” approach to mass slaughter.)
Who opposed the Agriculture Bill that passed the new conservative cruelty for school lunch programmes, food stamps, WIC, work requirements for the disabled, &c? Oh right, every last Democrat. All of them. Why did the bill fail? Because extreme conservatives in the House objected because the bill did not ban all immigration as well.
Who had student protestors at the US House today arrested because students are tired of being blood sacrifices for conservatives? House Speaker Paul Ryan did. Damn those I Amendment clauses of free association, free speech, and redress of grievances.
Which party is trying to ban Muslims? (More extreme ones are trying to ban atheists as well.)
It was George HW Bush who said while I was in the Navy that atheists cannot be patriotic and shouldn’t be citizens.
It was Trump who just appointed Bryan Fischer to his international religious freedom body. The Bryan Fischer who thinks my sister should be hanged for her sexual orientation and who’s group is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Which party is it running a hate speech monger for Massachusetts governor (Scott Lively, author of Uganda’s “kill the gays” bill)?
Which television network has had a parade of people on saying the only way to solve our political issues is to kill liberals?
It is the Republican Party which running actual Nazis (members of the Traditionalist Workers Party) for a House seat in Illinois and Governor of California.
Hey Nebraska Governor Ricketts, you went through Broadwater today (twice) to Alliance and back to talk to Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue about loosening regulations on agricultural pesticides and try to get an exemption from Trump’s anti-NAFTA policies? Where’s our disaster declaration we requested last week? You directly saw the damage.
Which party is it again that is violating the Iran Accords and the Paris Climate Accords? Against teaching evolution or sex education? Against critical thinking (that was in the Texas GOP party platform)?
I’m sorry you missed out on Nixon sabotaging the Vietnam Peace Talks (which got my father killed), Reagan financing death squads in violation of Congress by selling weapons to a sanctioned nation (Iran) after he ratfucked Jimmy Carter’s negotiations to free the hostages there then laundering the money with drug selling.
I’m sorry you missed out on Gerald Ford’s Operation Condor to back military dictatorships in South America to prevent free and fair elections in many countries there including assassinating Bolivia’s president and political activists on the left (which was still going on when I was in Brazil). I’m sorry you missed out on Republicans supporting overthrowing elected governments in Chile, Honduras, and Iran so they could install dictators (or in Iran’s case, the Shah).
I’m sorry conservative pundits like William F. Buckley, Jr. supported Jim Crow and South Africa’s apartheid government on television and in his magazine.
I’m sorry it was Ronald Reagan who lifted sanctions against the apartheid regime in South Africa.
I’m sorry both Pat Roberson and Vice-President Mike Pence want to establish a theocracy in the nation.
If you are the victim of propaganda, I can’t help you other than provide you facts. All I can do is hope you help yourself.
There is a reason conservatism is often compared to a religion. It is impervious to facts when its claims are shown to be false. It drives out those who question it, and it kills those who oppose it.
Those are facts.

May 19 (half an hour away for me) is a flag observance, Armed Forces Day.
The day is set aside in law as an observance for those who serve on active duty and in the reserve components.
Instead, the flag is at half-mast in remembrance of the victims of yet another school mass-murder.
It sickens me to lower the flags in town for these. A half-masted flag will not bring a student or teacher back. The overwhelming majority of the public will not even wonder why the flag is at half-mast. A good chunk of businesses won’t even bother to lower the flag.
The flag I want lowered is the NRA’s, and replaced with a white flag of surrender.
re: #63 Stanley Sea
In this day and age, a funeral is the sort of thing that can mess people up financially, and the decision-making process for all the detail—some adults do at least some of the planning for their death rituals, but kids have nothing laid out ahead of time…no plot, no casket, et cetera—are devastating. All the more devastating because the funeral service biz is full of predatory upselling and emotional manipulation.
Stripping fear about money and the pressure to make the “right” choices is an incredibly thoughtful thing to do for people who have had the rug pulled out from under them so completely.

Wow. I think that’s hideously unfair.
He’s helping a local community.
He’s relieving a huge financial burden on a rural community, and how many of those parents had insurance policies to cover the $10-15,000 cost of burying their high school children so cruelly cut down?
We have no idea how much money he has given to the local candidates in the upcoming elections who support reasonable gun control. Could be nothing, could be a lot.
That was a really harsh comment. This was a guy who raised millions of dollars for local Hurricane relief.

Very nicely laid out. A lot of this is so foreign, as you said (the natural order), that much of it gets missed even to those not directly impacted.
The rest of the world is coming to the point where they will take matters into their own hands when it comes to Trump.
I’ve been predicting that the dollar will be dumped as the reserve currency and now seeing that the Council of Europe is invoking reciprocity actions against Trump I’m convinced that the dumping of the dollar will be coming very soon.

Simon W. has analyzed the Trump administration’s attitudes toward Latin America, and his takeaway is this administration only makes demands and offers nothing in return. The master of the deal (cough, cough) offers nothing from our side — he only dictates terms and expects the other side to cave.
Instead, Latin America is doing business with China, because why not?
[Doing business with China does have disadvantages, too. Like Trump, China often ignores its agreements and then does whatever it damn well pleases.]

The teaching of evolution in Arizona classrooms could be taking a big step backwards.
School Superintendent Diane Douglas is apparently behind a rewrite of science standards for all Arizona school children that would delete references to evolution.
Audio obtained by 12 News shows Douglas believes a version of creationism, called “intelligent design,” should be taught in tandem with evolution.

That’s because it is. Every quarter or so, until 2014, there was a gun show in town called the Saxet Gun Show (Texas backwards, get it?). Travis County wanted them to institute background checks before weapons sales. The show’s presenters were argle bargle 2A rights, &c, &c. So Travis County said “Get lost.”
They moved down to Dripping Springs in Hays County immediately south of us, and the show is now annual. They say that only 10-15% of sales don’t include background checks, but private sales in the parking lot are uncontrolled.
So if you want to buy a semi- or full-auto rifle, just come to a Saxet show and look for for sellers in the parking lot. Bring cash. No questions asked.
Someone doesn’t know the lexicon very well, and that never helps:

The trailer, for those who haven’t seen it yet:
Putting on my curmudgeon hat - the series will be science-light. Mostly the episodes are about wow-factors like impressive animations.
Story-wise, Cosmos will be about myth-making in the modern sense, of writing a new (and progressive, hence the angst) agenda for humanity in light of all we have learned.
Fundamentalists will, correctly, perceive it as an attack on fundamentalist beliefs (of whatever variety.) Cosmos as Sagan had it was itself a very progressive show by nature, and the latest installment picks up on that.

May 19 (half an hour away for me) is a flag observance, Armed Forces Day.
The day is set aside in law as an observance for those who serve on active duty and in the reserve components.
Instead, the flag is at half-mast in remembrance of the victims of yet another school mass-murder.
I guess you caught that we have lost more school students to shootings than active service military personnel this year.

It’s just ridiculous. We have the opportunity to vote every one of these Republican motherfuckers in the House out of office this fall, and we will probably fail miserably because they represent gerrymandered districts that contain like-minded spunk trumpets.
And in the morning, we will have to deal with another rage rant on Twitter by the POTUS from his toilet. Just imagine that sentence being written two short years ago.
It’s three and a half days until the Grace Follow-On mission launch window:
Given that Trump’s new head of NASA is an AGW denier, I think it is both sad that the phrases like “anthropogenic climate change” etc., are missing from the latest version of the project website, but at the same time hilarious at how easily the scientists get around that by rearranging words to have the same meaning, e.g.
“Monitoring changes in ice sheets and glaciers, underground water storage, the amount of water in large lakes and rivers, and changes in sea level provides a unique view of Earth’s climate and has far-reaching benefits for its people.”
Recent video put out by the Grace team on some discoveries of the first series of satellites:
News briefing from a couple of weeks ago:
I’m too lazy to make scans but has any comics fan noticed that the somewhat ham-fisted dialogue that Stan Lee put into the mouth of the Hate-Monger in FF (#26 was it?) or the Red Skull in CAP #103 or #104, or the Sons of the Serpent in an Avengers (around #30?) has today become mainstream political dialogue.
Look at it: yesterday, these were simplistic comic-book villains; today, they’re on CNN.

I’m still reading The Wages of Destruction, about the economics of the Nazi Regime. Until now, I had not learned of the Reich’s Hunger Plan, which was to systematically starve every non-Aryan in the occupied territories to death, both to provide more rations to Germans and to open up those lands for German resettlement. It was slow-motion genocide, and official Nazi policy.

I think a lot of Germans took Hitler’s words on racial superiority as mere rhetoric and did not understand that he meant to reflect those views by applying the most inhumane policies.
Sound familiar?
The other aspect about the war I just had explained to me was oil: in 1940, the world’s biggest oil producers were the USA, Venezuela and Russia. The Middle East was just starting to produce oil and means for transporting or refining it were limited.
Once shipments of oil from the USA and Venezuela were cut off, the only option remaining was to seize the Soviet oil fields, without which Germany could not continue to survive economically, much less equip and fight a mechanized war.

The Reich did have some Romanian oil imports, but these were insufficient for the needs of the military and civilian population. Hitler saw the USSR as a source of desperately needed raw materials, but attacking the Soviets was a dangerous gamble. If he had succeeded, the Nazis could have kept their war going years longer. In fact, Hitler nearly exhausted the Reich’s meager reserves and supplies of raw materials with the Eastern War.
A third option, which would have entailed working with the Soviets to obtain the necessary supplies peaceably, was apparently never seriously considered. Hitler and his cronies believed Slavs were inferior people, and Communism a “Jewish menace.” To stoop so low as to ask the USSR for aid was politically and ideologically impossible. Basically, it became a political, ideological and economic necessity for Germany to invade the Soviet Union, even if it was doomed to fail.
re: #103 wheat-dogg
the point was that it was all a big crap-shoot: either seize the oil or go down fighting.

Just did an Amazon order for some stuff and noticed the prices are a few dollars higher than when I previous have ordered same items last year. This comes after Amazon announced a 20% increase in annual Prime membership fee.
I fear that Trumpism, coming on the heels of an 8 year slow recovery, is going to go straight into serious inflation, with the Treasury having to issue debt on a huge annual deficit (because of the tax cuts) at ever higher interest rates… meaning in years to come the national debt will be tragically high.
The horrors of Trump and a malicious Republican party will be felt for generations.

Interesting tidbit I just read:
Harry’s titles will be His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel. Once married, Meghan will be known as Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex. She will be the first person to hold that title.
The only previous person to hold the title of Duke of Sussex was an anti-slavery campaigner and supporter of rights for Catholics and Jews, according to the Royal Collection. Prince Augustus Frederick, son of George III and Queen Charlotte, gained the title in 1801.

I so want to duplicate Czech gun laws here. We could make getting a gun so much more appropriately difficult yet still have a thriving gun culture the same as the citizens of the Czech Republic. Recognize that all adults are implicitly the militia and that it needs to be properly regulated by training and licensing to prove the training.

That a member of the British Royal Family - a Prince of the House of Windsor, no less - would be marrying a mixed-race American divorceé is something that would’ve been entirely unthinkable as little as 30 years ago.

I was watching some of the BBC coverage before the ceremony began. They interviewed two young people from a London FM radio station, Reprezent. Both were PoC, and the young man said Harry and Meghan represent their age group’s attitudes toward race. They are the “new royalty,” he said, and stand for the new Britain, one that is multicultural and inclusive. Unstated, but certainly implied in his remarks was the message that “old Britain” had damn well better get used to it.

I’m curious about the property aspect, and am poking the Intertubes for information. The previous Duke of Sussex would have collected rents, but so far I haven’t found any indication the current Duke and Duchess will.
Apparently, the ducal title brings no rental income.
Any titles given to Harry and Meghan are likely to be little more than that. William and Kate were each given three titles but none of them came with land or powers.
Though there are currently six royal dukes in the UK, there are only two royal duchies, or territories associated with a dukedom.
Ms Hume says: “There is the Duchy of Cornwall, which belongs to the Prince of Wales, and the Duchy of Lancaster, which belongs to the Queen.
“Those do have private estates attached to them and the Queen and Prince of Wales derive an income from them but those are the only ones.”

True enough.
This particular marriage is remarkable in that not all that long ago, historically speaking, Edward VIII wanted to marry an American divorceé and we all know how that ended. Granted, he was King, but I can’t help but think that a marriage such as the one between Harry and Megan would’ve been impossible 30 years ago.

I don’t really know how the royal family makes money other than salaries from their other occupations (in Harry’s case the military.) The duchies apparently are not really at the discretion of the royal family, though of course they have the privilege of using their lands for their own pleasure.
IOW, I don’t think Charles can take, say, a few million dollars from his duchy and invest in something else. It’s ownership only in the sense of exclusive use.

You’re right about that. The properties only nominally belong to the Crown. Most are held in trust by the government. So, while Charles can earn income from his duchy, he can’t just sell off a chunk of it for quick profits.

A tragic American ‘celebration’ of The Great American Gun yesterday.
A happy and hopeful Royal Wedding celebration in Great Britain.
Both covered thoroughly by our media.
This world.

If nothing else, it certainly is history.
That a member of the British Royal Family - a Prince of the House of Windsor, no less - would be marrying a mixed-race American divorceé is something that would’ve been entirely unthinkable as little as 30 years ago.
All the best to the happy couple.
The freeper’s have been howling bloody murder about this for quite a while. I won’t debase this thread with some examples, but the bigotry and horrid predictions are horrid.

Oh, I agree. But the contrast stands.
It is just so stark as portrayed by the media. That’s is what struck me.
Sadly, I hope today does not quickly allow yesterday to slide into memory. The politicians and lobbyists will hope it will.
Maybe the student activists started by the Parkland students refuse to let that happen.

Google maps has the route of the procession from the cathedral to the castle on their view:

I had forgotten what I think I once knew - that Windsor castle is right under the flight path of very nearby Heathrow airport.
No wonder the queen spends most of her time at the other properties. Who wants to hear the roar of jet engines 24/7?

Just watching “QI” the other day - a great British TV quiz show - and it seems that her official residence (as in her mailing address) is St James’ Palace and not Buckingham, Windsor or Balmoral.
re: #150 freetoken
Harry is the 5th Great grand nephew of the first Duke of Sussex, it appears.
Harry could be the last such Duke too, depending on how the future of the British monarchy goes.
The monarchy will survive - they tried getting rid of it once & then realized the error of their ways when the religious bigots took over. Harry will be the last Duke - of his line - if he does not have a son. Couple of hundred years time it could be given to another 2nd son.

Isn’t that just formality, though? I thought that a lot of the business of being a royal is just keeping the traditions on the paper.
In practice, I thought Elizabeth spent most of her time in Buckingham, though they used to go up to Scotland a lot.
re: #161 freetoken
His grandmother, his father, his brother, and his nephew would all have to perish first.
Also his niece and recently born nephew. Harry is now No 6 in line - not likely.

Granted, he was King, but I can’t help but think that a marriage such as the one between Harry and Megan would’ve been impossible 30 years ago.
The marriage is always possible, but without the approval of the Monarch - the leader of the Church of England, the royal can lose all royal privilege. This was why Princess Margaret did not marry her divorcee back in the 1950s when the C of E did not recognize divorce. And now, that same church married a divorcee who was brought up as a R.C. - and the Queen makes her a Duchess. Things do change - just takes some time.

And the official appointments such as ambassadors are “from the Court of St. James”, too. I guess everyone needs a permanent mailing address.
I see Wikipedia already lists the living space of the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex as Kensington palace, though the Wiki entry on that palace just has his brother’s family currently living there (and their cousin Eugenie.)

That issue came up with Charles and Camilla: she was the love of his life but marriage was out of the question as she was a divorcee, so he wound up marrying Diana, whom he did not really love, and we all know how that ended.
As it is, I expect his mom is just going to do her damnedest to outlive him and pass the throne on to her grandson.
re: #187 freetoken
I don’t really know how the royal family makes money other than salaries from their other occupations (in Harry’s case the military.) The duchies apparently are not really at the discretion of the royal family, though of course they have the privilege of using their lands for their own pleasure.
IOW, I don’t think Charles can take, say, a few million dollars from his duchy and invest in something else. It’s ownership only in the sense of exclusive use.
Charles gets the income from his estate and can use it as he sees fit. In more recent times both he and his mother pay taxes on their income (not sure when that started, probably late 20th century)
re: #223 fern01
The wiki entry claims their estates are managed for them, and that the estates are not very discretionary.
The new couple will have somewhat modest living accommodations:
Nottingham Cottage has two bedrooms and receptions rooms with a bathroom and small garden. It is 1,324 ft2 in size.
Single bathroom… that’s going to get old fast.
Just this week we had a congresscritter claim falling rocks is responsible for rising sea levels, a POS fake potus claim the prior president spied on him, a racist lawyer get outed and become the most hated man in America, and two school shootings in single day. Trump’s America fucking sucks…..

Unlikely - Charles will get a few years, (Edward VII only had about 10 years after his mother Victoria died) - and from what I have read Camilla will get the Queen title - like I said times sure are changing.
I’ve always thought the monarchy as it exists today is much better than having a President. No authority - that remains with Parliament/government - but they do bring in massive amounts to the UK treasury. Every tourist wants to visit all the royal places/buy the souvenirs. I even queued for 6 hours when the QM died to view the lying in state. It was an amazing experience and brought hundreds of thousands to the capital. I imagine a wedding would bring many more than a funeral.
re: #224 freetoken

I read that more in relation to what they can do with the estate - but they still have some discretion in regards to the income - and they pay taxes. Regardless, they don’t have financial issues - :)

That would’ve been a major scandal in and of itself. Hell, interracial marriages were frowned upon until not long ago - and by that, I mean in the last couple of decades or so. And even there, it’s still a highly contentious subject among some people.

Being an American divorceé was only the start of what was wrong with that potential marriage — Wallis Simpson was a Nazi sympathizer for sure, possibly a Nazi agent, and she was pushing Edward to negotiate/sign a treaty with Hitler. Being not very bright and easily manipulated, the family feared he might just do it. That’s why after the marriage they were exiled.
Throughout the war, when things were going badly, Wallis retained hope that if/when Germany won they’d be returned to the throne.

As it turned out, it was fortunate for the world that Edward had to surrender the throne to marry the woman he loved. I shudder to think what would have happened if those two Nazi-supporting lovers had been King and Queen of England.

Yes indeed - I believe at the time, it was really only the British Establishment that knew of Wallis’ Nazi sympathies.
I hadn’t heard that she may have been an outright Nazi agent. That’s news to me.

That’s an interesting tidbit about Pagourtzis’ girlfriend, but it (just IMO) misses the bigger picture. If there was a “personal” aspect to his shooting rampage, one has to wonder why he followed the now- (tragically, disgracefully) classic “school shooter” scenario, rather than, say, just waiting for his “ex” outside after the bell, and plugging her right then and there. Even if the ex-girlfriend was a (the?) target, and/or a murder-suicide intention, it doesn’t address the issue of why this looney-tunes felt the need to take a bunch of his classmates/teachers with him. And still less the issue of the easy/careless access to firearms that let him do so: which headline would we rather be reading…?
Deranged teen kills 10, injures 10 in grisly school shooting at Texas high school. or:
Deranges teen stabs, kills girlfriend in grisly knife attack at Texas high school
PS: apparently it WAS “personal” in a way:

He’s helping a local community.
He’s relieving a huge financial burden on a rural community, and how many of those parents had insurance policies to cover the $10-15,000 cost of burying their high school children so cruelly cut down?
We have no idea how much money he has given to the local candidates in the upcoming elections who support reasonable gun control. Could be nothing, could be a lot.

How will she defend herself against government tyranny?
We have two lines of argument coming from the NRA: one is that sane and law-abiding folk need guns to defend us from crazed criminals with guns, the other is that Patriots need guns to defend themselves against their legally elected government should it start to abuse its checked & balanced Constitutional powers.
They run that argument in an endless loop against a backdrop of public gun massacres.

I did not even own a TV for long stretches in the 70’s and 80’s, and only bought one in Germany to keep up with the breaking news in 1989 when all hell was breaking loose and walls and borders were being dismantled.
Have since watched a number of series on Netflix and amazon but not on a regular basis since I split up with my GF and she changed her password…
It’s been years since I last followed a series on a network. Mainly stream HBO, Showtime, Starz and Filmstruck. I also stream other cable channels with Sling. Seems all the networks do anymore is resurrect old series.
The way CGI is going they will probably reboot shows with the original actor images in a decade.

One striking contrast between Reagan and Trump:
Reagan’s conservatism was a youthful movement (in spirit and often in fact), fueled by hopefulness for the future. Trump’s conservatism is a reactionary movement of older Americans, fueled by anger and fear.https://t.co/COeSpzQwvu— Bill Kristol (@BillKristol) May 19, 2018
Jesus, Bill - it’s the same goddam people!!! They’re 35 years older now, and they’re frustrated that the world didn’t stay the way they wanted it.
But, you know, it was ALWAYS about anger and fear. It’s just that Reagan portrayed fucking the poors and the coloreds as ‘Self Reliance’. “Welfare queens driving Cadillacs”, “Strapping young bucks on street corners buying T-bone steaks* with Food Stamps” - any of that ring a bell?
*Why T-bone steaks? I think there’s something semantically loaded about that. The phrase doesn’t work the same way if you substitute Porterhouse, or Strip, or Ribeye. Funny, but I think it’s true.

At least Reagan had a record of public service and some idea of how government functions, how to delegate and how to work with governmental bodies and agencies, how to shape and implement policies and decisions.
(Not that I agreed with any of it.)
All that is lacking in the current administration.

Reagan’s past as an actor also helped; it let him project a kind of sunny confidence and hopefulness.

Reagan courted the Religious Right but once he got into power he ignored them and listened to Nancy’s house astrologer instead.
The Religious Right courted Trump and in return he is quietly giving them everything they are asking for. And if he can, he will give them judges to overturn Roe vs. Wade or at least render it inoperative

This is an amazingly bad, stupid take, yet it contains a nugget of truth - the Right, and later the Left as well spent 30 years inaccurately painting the Clintons as corrupt, to the point where entirely too many people believed it.

I’m puzzled by the argument that the use of an informant taints an investigation. Informants are a ridiculously common part of law enforcement investigations, often at a very early stage.

They need some grounds to be able to ignore Mueller’s findings when he presents them so that they do not appear totally complicit themselves when they fail to act on them.

Apparently the can of 40mm rounds fell off a HMMWV on an Indian reservation. It has not been recovered, and the search has ended.
Of something of a positive note. the 40mm rounds are relatively useless without a automatic grenade launcher, like a Mk19. Unless, of course, you were to build something of a small single shot cannon to fire them from
I especially liked the simple, unadorned uniform Prince Harry wore to the wedding. 4 service ribbons, all legit, and his pilot wings, that’s it. I’ve been cringing for the last 20 years as our own officers seem to be done up more and more like Ruritanian field marshals when they, say, testify before Congress. The acres and acres of ribbons and badges and other trinkets are not necessary, they are confusing to the public, and they send the wrong message. This was an issue while I was still in the Army, with the advocates of ostentation apparently having won the debate.

re: #253 Jay C
With apologies for vulgar statements about something tragic.
Schools are where kids spend half or more of their day. Schools are where they form a large number of their first non-family intimate contacts: mentors, friends, significant others. It is a space that is not like public space, full strangers, and what happens within it has some of the qualities of “private” space associated with the home.
A classroom is a domestic setting.
The first thing we should think about school shooters is…they are domestic murderers. Their entitled, incontinent horseshit that prompts murder likely contains grudges and hurt feelings, no matter how trivial, that make the motive something other than nihilist joy. I’ve said before, I suspect that some, indeed many, of these shootings start as a murder, then continue on because the intended murder doesn’t discharge their narcissistic injury…and having killed once, there’s the sense of being committed to an action and having no future, so why not go on*?
* …because you’re a shitheap that doesn’t value people beyond utility, and thus keeping shooting is all about you and thus that leap makes sense, you fucking waste….
It’s not mysterious. It’s not even clever. Like a lot of murderers, their “win” is that they lack something so large that other human beings wouldn’t anticipate their behavior. Nobody expects the guy that wins an argument by shitting in his hand and throwing it; nobody expects the shit weasel that solves his insecurity by spraying bullets in a classroom.
Fuck ‘em. They deserve no awe. They fail even by the conscienceless standard of comparison to other monsters.
They are the same species of coward as the man who leverages the love of his victims to freely deploy violence.
