A Japanese Probe Is About to Drop Two Hopping Robots Onto Asteroid Ryugu
A Japanese asteroid-sampling probe is about to get up close and personal with its target space rock.
The Hayabusa2 spacecraft will drop two tiny rovers onto the asteroid Ryugu this week, possibly as early as Thursday (Sept. 20), if all goes according to plan.
The Hayabusa2 team began prepping seriously for the epic maneuver last week. The current schedule calls for the mother ship to descend toward Ryugu today (Sept. 19) and for the two little disk-shaped robots, known as MINERVA-II1A and MINERVA-II1B, to deploy as early as tomorrow, U.S. time. (Officials with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, have cited Sept. 20 and Sept. 21 for these events, but that’s apparently on Japan time, which is 13 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Daylight Time.)

No wonder he dated Laura Ingraham and Ann Coulter — racists tend to stick together.
If the R’s don’t allow the delay of Ford’s testimony until Thursday and try to to push through the nomination on Monday, they’re fucked. If the FBI doesn’t investigate the accusations, like they did with Anita Hill, they’re fucked.
If anything comes of it (and it will), Kavanaugh cannot claim a “high tech lynching” like Thomas did because he’s a privileged white boy.

Elmbrook Church senior pastor resigns due to marital infidelities and ‘serious addiction’
A senior leader of Elmbrook Church, one of the largest churches in Wisconsin, has resigned “due to multiple marital infidelities” and to seek inpatient treatment for an unspecified addiction.
Jason Webb, senior church pastor for four years, announced his departure in a remorseful letter sent to the Elmbrook congregation Wednesday. Webb’s resignation was tendered last week, church officials said.
An interim senior pastor to replace Webb is expected to be chosen as soon as mid-next week by Elmbrook’s council of elders, said Mark Heckman, the church’s executive director of support services.

The Hayabusa in WW2 was the KI-43 Japanese fighter plane. In Japanese, it’s the peregrine falcon. It was a Japanese Army aircraft, and it was a damn good fighter, very manuverable, very fast, it’s biggest weakness a lack self-sealing fuel tanks.
In other words, if it got lit up by a US fighter, it burned like a torch.

Polls open in eSwatini, where king has absolute rule (Goes to Deutsche Welle, more at the link - eSwantini is the new name for Swaziland):
The tiny African kingdom of eSwatini, formerly Swaziland, was headed to the polls on Friday, for elections that are seen as largely undemocratic.
Political parties are banned from participating in the vote and King Mswati III — one of the world’s last absolute rulers — holds complete control over the parliament and government, as well as the judiciary, civil service and security forces.
In addition to handpicking the prime minister, he can veto legislation and is constitutionally above the law.

As I understand it, Martha Kavanaugh was fairly high in the Montgomery County, Maryland State legal system. I suspect that even a 15 year old can come to the conclusion regarding the odds of a complaint working out well.
- Assistant State’s Attorney, Montgomery County, 1978-84
- Associate Judge, District Court of Maryland, District 6, Montgomery County, 1993-95.
- Associate Judge, Montgomery County Circuit Court, 6th Judicial Circuit, 1995 to June 2, 2001

Look, my wife and I go to the UK every year to visit my wife’s sister and our brother-in-law (a founding member of Silly Wizard, ensconced in the Scottish Trad Hall Of Fame) who live north of London in the unfortunately named village of Leighton Buzzard. Lots of ancient buildings, a Market Cross, and a Parish Church built in 1277 with a 190 foot steeple.
We then head north to the Edinburgh International Harp Festival where She Who Must Be Obeyed has her best week of the year, playing and laughing with her peers. She’s a hell of a musician, Eastman trained, and her crossover into Scottish/Irish/Welsh/Cornish/Brittany/Basque styles of harping, all Celtic, by the way at their roots, makes her a better player. It’s great for her, and I get to drink excellent beer and scotch.
Brexit will likely mean that we will have to cross a border when we travel from England to Scotland. The Scots will leave the UK. Edinburgh will replace London as the banking center on the island. They’ll adopt the Euro as their currency.
It will be an absolute disaster for England.
And all of this could be avoided if the UK government just said “Stop! We aren’t going to do this! What were we thinking? This is just stupid!”

Right. She was probably scared. Her word against his and it still is that way. But it shocks me not at all that Trump would victim blame.
She didn’t even tell her family; because she was 15 and she didn’t want them to know she’d been at a party with no chaperones and kids were drinking.

Here’s my fantasy:
“Were you a member of an organization euphemistically called “Tit and Clit” at Yale?
Was it also assumed that within that organization, a widely held and reported belief, that “No” meant “Yes”, and “Yes” meant “anal”?”
I just want to hear him answer the question. Those were his homeboys.
I would also like him to answer questions about why a law school professor was telling her female students they needed to “look like a model” if they wanted a clerkship with him. I’d say the odds are good that Kavanaugh has been sleeping with a least some of his clerks.

U.S. Is to Blame for Stalemate in Dialogue
Three months have passed since the DPRK-U.S. summit and talks in Singapore and the adoption of the joint statement. The international community wished the DPRK-U.S. joint statement be implemented successfully, the extreme hostile relations between the DPRK and the U.S. that have been the sharpest confrontation be put to an end as soon as possible and durable peace and security be settle in the Korean peninsula and the region.
The dialogue between the DPRK and the U.S. has been stalemated.
The U.S. is totally to blame for the deadlocked DPRK-U.S. negotiations.
The U.S. is stubbornly insisting on the theory of “dismantlement of nukes first” which was rejected in the past DPRK-U.S. dialogues, saying that other issues may be discussed only after the “complete, verifiable and irretrievable dismantlement of nukes” of the DPRK, while failing to show its will for confidence building including the declaration of the end of war which it had already pledged.
The U.S. is demanding unilateral and gangster-like claim forcing the DPRK to act without showing its movement. The conservative politicians of the U.S. are taking the lead in persisting in such gangster-like logic.
For implementation of the DPRK-U.S. joint statement, the U.S. which is the other side should adopt a sincere approach.
The future of the DPRK-U.S. dialogue totally depends on the stand and action of the U.S.
The U.S. should think twice and have an honest and diligent attitude toward the DPRK-U.S. dialogue with sincerity and bold decision.
And this is also beneficial to the U.S.

There is that, but given the chaos of a hard Brexit, (which can be viewed a extremely messy secession) they might rather have some of the former UK in the EU, rather than all of it out.
Also, the genie was already out of the bottle as regards Catalonia when the government there declared UDI. If Scotland and/or Northern Ireland were to be admitted back in the EU, what are they going to do? Declare UDI even harder?

That headline aged well…//////
I mean I remember being that age. It’s a difficult one because physically you’re almost who you are near adulthood but emotionally you’re still a kid. I was the same age as Dr. Ford was when I received my ASD diagnosis fifteen years ago. I was a sophomore. Still very much a scared kid in many ways and definitely reluctant to tell people about that. If I were scared of what people would think of me for having Asperger’s- remember this was the early 2000’s so people weren’t as educated about autism, how the hell do you say “Yes, Brett Kavanaugh, the kid whose mom is a prosecutor attempted to rape me.” Those attacking her decisions in the aftermath. Well let’s just say. I hope to God you or no one you love ever finds themselves in a situation like that.
re: #129 Aucun pays pour les vieux ennemis
you are an ass. I was sexually assaulted at age 9 in about 1970 by a 16 YO neighbor and I didn’t tell anyone until February 2017 when a friend asked me point blank if I’d been assaulted. That was 47 years. Again, you are an ass and you make me want to puke.
— (((Deana “No Permanent Baby Jails” Holmes))) (@mmmirele) September 21, 2018
People talk about details, well, here’s a detail. I didn’t know to tell people, but I was a very angry kid. My assaulter’s mother caught me ripping the wires in his VW Beetle engine compartment one day. I didn’t know much about cars but I knew the Beetle’s engine was in the back because my hippie uncle had one and I was going to town on this guy’s engine. But I couldn’t tell his mom why I was doing it. It was something not discussed in middle-class America at the time.
You say something then, they say what about his future.
You say something now, they say let the past go.
Ain’t a damn person caring about her present.
And man it’s so fucking true too. All this concern about how Ford is “ruining” his life and “destroying” a “good man.” This is someone who obviously still lives with what happened that day. Kavanaugh and Judge? They probably did what they did. Woke up the next day with hangovers and probably a loose recollection of what happened, laughed it off as no big dealer, and carried on with their lives and probably didn’t think at all about Dr. Ford until she accused him.
The folks who are decrying her for keeping quiet are the same ones who look at stories about preppy college students being accused of rape and whine “What about his future?!”
Hmmm… Is this a signal to the DUP to make up with Sinn Fein and get the Northern Ireland assembly back up and running again?

As disgusted as I am by all of this bile towards Dr. Ford and everyone saying, “Why didn’t the 15 year-old girl report an attempted rape at a party at a house with underage drinking?”….I want this out. I want people to see this. Because we do not talk about why women don’t report. Everyone assumes the answer is to report and go through the grinder or it never happened and you’re a liar.
Thus, Trump’s tweets.
It happens. We don’t report for a hell of a lot of reasons. I want people to see what happens to women that do.
Morning, Lizards!
So, we decided to go into NYC last night to attend the Feast of St. Gennaro, where we ate just about every type of yummy Italian food and strolled through Little Italy. Lots of fun.
Then I get home and take a quick peek at LGF before bed and see this bullshit ‘the other guy did it’ defense by Ed Whelan. But it took me until just a minute ago to realize that I posted a link to Kathleen Parker’s equally bullshit op-ed from yesterday about a Kavanaugh ‘doppelganger,’ and saw some tweets that Hatch mentioned said bullshit theory in passing a couple of days ago.
This whole story was coordinated by the Kavanaugh, Repubs on the Judiciary Committee, and conservative op-ed spinmeisters at the WaPo. Probably with Trump’s help, given that Kavanaugh has been to the White House for a couple of days running.
But the really surprising thing to me is that all of these supposedly smart people, these conservative thought leaders, thought for a hot minute that any of this would fly.
I can only magine the questions that Harris, Booker, Durbin and Leahy will have lined up for Kavanaugh when he returns for more testimony. If he returns.
And if Ford does decide to come in and testify, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Kavanaugh’s name is suddenly withdrawn from consideration. These mooks fucked it up that badly.

today’s peevy rant is a takeoff on my general - ‘dont feed the crackpots’ theme

these absurd ideas, explanations, justifications, floorplans?!!….
they are nonsense and everyone, even they, know this
and they know all they have to do is the theater and get through to the last act
my peeve: as opposed to actual crackpots, we - you, me, us, (the sane ones) *have* to give this stuff some legitimacy
we *have* to hear it, read it, analyze it, respond to it, deconstruct and debunk it.

and we must

The only issue with not being the only one is how she is being treated in public, by elected officials. I cannot imagine another woman wanting to come forward…which is republicanism by design.

Yup. Believe it or not, drunkenness is not how it’s often depicted in fiction.

Seriously. What a fucking dipshit. Sorry that I’m late to this like Makeitstop is. This guy Whelan really stepped in shit.
And from accounts I’m seeing this morning, Whelan actually convinced himself that this asinine theory he cooked up was actually more plausible than Professor Ford’s charges against Kavanaugh.
That’s a textbook definition of how confirmation bias works, for cryin’ out loud.
If Ford was pissed before, she’s going to come into that hearing room loaded for bear. And all of these entitled old men on the Judiciary Committee - Hatch, Grassley, all of them - are going to rue the day they made the calculation that getting Kavanaugh onto the SC was worth attempting to ruin a woman’s life to get it done.
She. Is. Going. To. Lay. Waste. To. Them. And they will deserve it.

Which is why they are treating her that way. It is a tactic. It would take someone amazing brave to come out now. Lets hope they do.
re: #78 sagehen
She didn’t even tell her family; because she was 15 and she didn’t want them to know she’d been at a party with no chaperones and kids were drinking.
Yes, and at that time, our culture was totally into “you deserved it because you were drinking” or “you deserved it because you were dressed like that” etc ad nauseum.
And the ever-present “boys will be boys” and “his life shouldn’t be ruined over one ‘mistake’” bullshit.
Been fighting this shit since 1970. Will fight this shit until I die.

re: #164 HappyWarrior
You say something then, they say what about his future.
You say something now, they say let the past go.
Ain’t a damn person caring about her present. And man it’s so fucking true too. All this concern about how Ford is “ruining” his life and “destroying” a “good man.” This is someone who obviously still lives with what happened that day. Kavanaugh and Judge? They probably did what they did. Woke up the next day with hangovers and probably a loose recollection of what happened, laughed it off as no big dealer, and carried on with their lives and probably didn’t think at all about Dr. Ford until she accused him.
how dare he be accused of a crime he (allegedly) committed
i remind the judge and those supporting him:
no one has a right not to be accused
you prevent that by staying out of situations
if you are accused, you have rights to recourse if the accusation was abusive
otherwise it’s the system - or systems at work
no one has protection from vilification in the media
The thing really getting at me are the death threats. Death threats from people who only know Kavanaugh as Trump’s pick for SCOTUS and their way of getting an ideological majority on the bench for the next generation. And they see Dr. Ford as getting in the way of that so they threaten her with her life or release info like the coward who doxxed that would make it easier to do so. Honestly, I hope after this either Kavanaugh gets disbarred or he walks away in shame knowing that no one should ever take him seriously in a federal courtroom ever again. But it’s his own damn fault. He did this and never owned up to it and then became a hypocritical self-righteous asshole who also enjoyed spreading the conspiracy bullshit about Vince Foster not because I think he really believed it but because he knew the Clintons would hate it.

I’m reading the book “Behave” by Robert Sapolsky. Wonderful informative master work surveying neurobiology. One of the studies he cites showed where up to 40% of “out groups” (e.g., LGBTQ, women, African Americans) show implicit bias against the others of their group when taking an IAT test. In other words, the culture has inculcated within them a negative tendency toward people just like them. Self-hating might be too extreme a descriptor, but definitely conforming to the dominant cultural prejudices. For me, it explained a lot (like former Sheriff Clark and assorted other assholes.) They have internalized the white society prejudices as true.
I met with the DOJ concerning the declassification of various UNREDACTED documents. They agreed to release them but stated that so doing may have a perceived negative impact on the Russia probe. Also, key Allies’ called to ask not to release. Therefore, the Inspector General…..

So we’re coming up on the 11am EDT mark, which means we start watching to see where the GOP goes with their “deadline” on Prof. Ford’s testimony. Gonna guess they decide to stamp their feet and say that they’re glad she’s willing to testify, but they’re not budging from holding this on Monday and she has to agree to that or they’re moving on.

I think the Scots may well consider a new independence referendum as Brexit has significantly changed the situation for them, and I would not begrudge them this, and I would understand completely if they vote to go with Europe, and wish them well.
I would feel the same for Northern Ireland, but I believe for historical/emotional reasons, any referendum to detach from the UK and unite with the Republic will fail. The great majority of NI are staunch unionists. I of course may be wrong in this prediction!

Seems be a growing suspicion on Twitter that prominent wingnuts knew about Whelan’s planned self-immolation yesterday. Kabuki theater designed to give the GOP cover in claiming that no matter what Dr. Ford says, they’ll confirm anyways, because there’s just enough doubt out there that we can say she was assaulted, but not by whom.
It’s all bulkshit from the GOP. They want Kavanaugh on the bench to fulfill his role as tipping the court to the GOP for decades to come. That’s all that matters. Even those so-called principled GOPers who think that Kavanaugh is compromised are going along with it - including McConnell. Why? Because if Kavanaugh withdraws now, there’s no time before the midterms to ram through another nominee and then we’re into the lame duck when it’s quite possible that Democrats retake the Senate and gain a majority in the House.
That’s another backdrop to the fact that Trump keeps throwing a shutdown threat out there, which would only help the Democrats.

Precisely. This is a man who has enjoyed some measure of protection through his adult life, whether it was an assistant DA mom, a college that is deeply protective of its reputation, a boss that was feeling up clerks in his chambers and keeping it quiet, or political patrons who now want to put him atop the highest court in the land.
If he’s a good man with a clean record, then he should be the first pushing for the matter to be cleared up, not in total denial while his patrons do the heavy lifting of destroying his accuser.

My guess is that DiFi was hoping that a couple of her GOP colleagues (hint: Lisa and Susan) would have sufficient ethics to come out against the nomination because they could see what Kavanaugh would do once on the court; unfortunately, of course, no current GOP member of the Senate or House has any backbone or loyalty to this nation; it’s all party over country.

Sure he was. He views his job as pleasing his base. His base didn’t want Merrick Garland, so his job was to spike that nomination and leave the “Scalia seat” open for a far-right thug.

re: #269 dangerman
my question to mitch:
if this is ‘doing your job’ what were you doing wrt Merrick Garland?

His job was to pack the courts with right wing extremists. That meant denying Garland a hearing or vote. He did so by inventing baffling BS claim that you can’t hold either during the lame duck years of a presidency. Let’s just ignore that John Marshall (yeah that John Marshall) was a lame duck appointment by Adams during the lame duck session of the Senate before Jefferson was inaugurated. From the get-go, elections were not the prohibiting factor preventing hearings or votes.
But this GOP has destroyed comity and ignore 200 years of precedent to claim you can’t hold hearings or a vote except when it’s in support of getting an accused sex predator on the Supreme Court to give the GOP functional control of the court’s ideological outlook for the next 20-30 years.
Or desperate. McConnell has made a lot of bad bets in the past year or two. His power to hocus pocus reporters into believing he’s clairvoyant may be diminished but it still exists. https://t.co/mZKCw7T4SC

The whole “He’s a good man, judge him on who he’s become!” bit doesn’t suggest that Senate Republicans believe he’s innocent. You don’t try to argue that a “good man” has become so after an illegal act if you believe that illegal act never happened.

The term “model citizen” seems to be limited to one’s personal behavior. IMHO, that is too restrictive: one’s professional involvement should also be considered. In judicial ruling after ruling, Kavanaugh has shown himself to be heartless and cruel to those who have less power. His disgraceful handling of the 17 year old pregnant immigrant should have disqualified him from consideration for this post, but we know that it’s his outrageous expansive interpretation on the power of the executive branch that led to his nomination.
Kavanaugh is not a model citizen if you base your views on the democracy we were before Trump’s election; of course, if you believe that NK adoring citizenry comprise model citizens, he probably fits that definition.

If Ford went to the police, would they have even bothered investigating, knowing that Mumsy would never allow her darling boy to be prosecuted? You don’t spend more per year on your child’s education than most Americans spend on their house only to have his future be jeopardized by some little slut (the common view of women that were raped) that likely wanted his attention.
And if your daughter tells you about the attack, do you bring it up, knowing that the police could well ingratiate themselves with Mumsy by making your life hell with constant traffic stops or citations? You know your daughter’s life would be examined in minute detail, what she wore, what she drank, any parties that she attended, her grades, her friends, and all of this would become public knowledge.
Worth doing? Probably not.

He signed a letter that his buddy from thirty years ago was a good guy. Typical shit we all do at some point in our lives, and almost none of us go to that friend and interrogate him or her on where the skeletons are buried under what closet before we sign.
That guy could just as well have been me or a hundred thousand other teachers who take a minute to sign something before the class goes apeshit again for the fifth time today. Like the rest of us Garrett did know that Ford had brought it up in therapy seven years before Kavanaugh’s nomination, that she put a witness in the room, passed a polygraph and was demanding an FBI investigation. None of that is what someone making up a story would do. So Garrett owns the fact that he ignored all of that and decided to sign a letter vouching for a dude he hadn’t seen in decades.

It doesn’t, but as we see with Whelon’s self-immolation, the longer this goes on, the more damage they’re doing to their credibility.
Um…it is my understanding these letters were signed weeks ago. Do you have different information?
re: #328 goddamnedfrank
I’ve never done that and would never do that in the face of credible allegations of sexual assault.
Please show your information on this. Do you have a date after last week that he signed?
Everything I have seen suggests this was a pro forma thing that was done weeks ago.

Some people (cough cough Corner Stone) at Balloon Juice have gone full throttle nihilism and are hoping the middle school teacher who signed the letter for Kavanaugh also gets wrecked as a result of this. One commenter hoped he would lose his house, wife and kids because he signed the letter supporting Kavanaugh and fuck him he deserves to burn.
I can’t do this. I cannot be with people who are going to be this consumed by hatred that a middle school teacher being nice to a buddy from three decades ago is fair game for destruction and opprobrium.
I think I flounced.
We cannot let ourselves become the enemy we are fighting. I refuse to go down that path.
I don’t agree with your flow of logic. I am not friends with rapists. I am not friends with racists. If a friend of mine was accused of doing what Kavanaugh did, I would not write him a letter of support, I would write the fucker out of my life and wonder how I could be so fucking blind. My definition of friendship does not include supporting anyone no matter what the fuck they do. That is bullshit. And, I would extend that to my kids. Be a bad person, don’t expect me to try all kinds of shit to get you off. That is exactly what the fuck is wrong with this country. Own your shit, Americans. Own it each and every one.

Fair enough. He just supported a classmate who last year tried to use force to keep a detained teenage immigrant from having an abortion against her will. So much less egregious but still boys club as fuck.
So is the consensus that Senate criminals will say “Fuck America” and vote Monday?

Show me were he wrote the letter in the last three days…because everything I have seen suggests the letter was from weeks ago, and was signed by a number of other classmates and law associates etc from years of contacts.
Nobody is signing letters to support this guy right now. Nobody.
So unless you will never, ever write a letter to support anybody at all on any grounds because you cannot say for sure what that person did when you were not looking, what is your issue with what I am saying?

The thing that will never stop burning me about white support for people like Trump, Kavanaugh, and the GOP writ large is that it’s too easy and there are endless excuses and civility arguments that completely skip right past the very real harm to minority populations being condoned in the process.

Because he is in fucking class right now dealing with children…and I wouldn’t do a damned thing until I had a lawyer.
Do you want to contribute to his legal fund when it is set up? Middle school teachers usually can’t afford a lawyer.

But, this Atlanta teacher had no knowledge of BK’s assault when he signed this general character reference in the past months sometime. Bet he’d take it back now! So weird to watch these site communities, for me since the early aughts.
While I completely disagree with their concept, I completely understand their frustration, and I’ll bet every single one of us here does.
Dems in general are too fucking nice and too fucking accommodating and too fucking forgiving. We play by the rules where Republicans are liars and cheats and charlatans with no moral compass whatsoever and no desire to play by any rules; whatever it takes to get and keep power.
We play by rules and they play us. Always. Repeatedly.

Er, I don’t know anything about this Garrett guy, and we’re living in Trump time, but you know that this all blew up yesterday. He was basically some random teacher a couple of days ago maybe wondering whether he should stain the deck this weekend, and suddenly he’s in the middle of a massive national political shitstorm. So I’d expect a few days to have some sort of coherent reaction.

re: #321 Hecuba’s daughter
You are absolutely right. His statement is ridiculous on its face — She would not have thought to report it to the police in any case since she managed to escape physical (not psychological) harm because Kavanaugh was too drunk. Girls often thought they were the ones to blame when attacked, especially in cases like this, where they were attending an underage drinking party without their parents’ knowledge or approval.
I can be overly pedantic — I was not excusing Trump but was wondering if it was some other deplorable on the team (Stephen Miller e.g.) who was responsible for the text itself.
To me it doesn’t matter who. They’re all the same. Every last one of them who has any association with this maladministration.

It’s not as though he is a well-known person in the public eye. Who knows how closely he is following any of this? We sometimes assume that because we are glued to the TV or the Internet watching the twists and turns of an important political drama that others are equally engaged. The 65 women who signed the letter of support AFTER the initial allegations were publicized did not come forward to make an official retraction: it required journalists making followup calls to show that only two still affirmed their support. It’s hard for citizens who are not accustomed to the spotlight to announce publicly that they were in error. As others have suggested, Garrett may be consulting attorneys about his legal options.
re: #323 Scottish Dragon

Consult with a lawyer first thing. And one who has SOME experience with politics; the average family lawyer can’t do it.
That means gathering recommendations from trusted associates (that MIGHT mean your family lawyer if you have one; if you don’t, add time. If your family lawyer doesn’t know anybody, add time).
Contact and set up appointment with said lawyer. Check budget and see if you can afford said lawyer.
At the meeting, go over strategy, close off areas of possible problems or liability. Spend time crafting a statement that minimizes exposure.
Remember. This person is an amateur, almost certainly not experienced in publicity. All these steps are sensible and takes time to execute.

Much like the letter of 65 women who swear Brett Kavanaugh never raped them, Whelon’s sudden “revelation” reeks of something that was coordinated with an eye towards discrediting any potential accusers.
I keep reminding Senator Portman in my contact messages that it seems the Republican party can do nothing straight up and above board. Everything is a scheme, a dodge and messing around with the rules. From Gerrymandering to outright lying Republicans have become nothing but dirty-dealing scum.

I would also bet that you have done this at some point without realizing it. Correct. Hatch goes on TV a few days ago stating that Dr. Ford might be “mixed up”, and then this crazy, albeit very detailed, tweetstorm from Whelan magically appears? Total coincidence. Sure, right.
And prior to that idiotic tweetstorm, Kathleen Parker submitted her ‘doppelganger’ op-ed yesterday, in the ‘liberal’ Washington Post.
This was completely coordinated. But they were so intent on setting this narrative that no one bothered to notice how completely ridiculous it sounded. Even Whelan said he believed his dopey-ass ‘theory’ sounded more plausible than Ford’s story.
And they think they’re so goddamned smart. Morons.

It seems that the Senate Judiciary has responded to Ford’s request:
Judiciary Commitee will make a counter offer to Dr. Ford: hearing on Wednesday, she goes first, committee gets to bring in an outside lawyer and no additional witnesses. The rest of her requests (on safety, TV pool, etc) will be accommodated, a GOP senator tells me

Are you kidding me? He needs several days to figure out that endorsing someone he barely knew who stands accused of reprehensible behavior, should be recanted? And he is competent to teach middle school? Tell me, what does he need to figure out? What side he is on? If she is lying?
Maybe he is just doing a disappearing act because he got himself way more into a mess than he ever expected by signing a letter. He could be so far in over his head that clamming up and trying to get it all to go away is all he can think to do right now.
That is a typical human response. I don’t know his character so I think it hard to say he would do what he should do.

Who is the independent counsel? Ken Starr?
EXCLUSIVE: Rosenstein discussed invoking the 25th Amendment to oust Trump in the days after Comey was fired in May 2017. Rosenstein also discussed wearing a wire to secretly record his conversations with Trump. https://t.co/lq3iWOqM1r w/@adamgoldmanNYT
— Michael S. Schmidt (@nytmike) September 21, 2018
Addendum:
According to this news report, Rosenstein denies the report and adds:
Mr. Rosenstein disputed this account.
“The New York Times’s story is inaccurate and factually incorrect,” he said in a statement. “I will not further comment on a story based on anonymous sources who are obviously biased against the department and are advancing their own personal agenda. But let me be clear about this: Based on my personal dealings with the president, there is no basis to invoke the 25th Amendment.”
A Justice Department spokeswoman also provided a statement from a person who was present when Mr. Rosenstein proposed wearing a wire. The person, who would not be named, acknowledged the remark but said Mr. Rosenstein made it sarcastically.
In other words, yeah, it happened and people around me think Trump is unstable and deserving of the 25A.

The bit about using an outside lawyer is really interesting to me. It signals to me that the Republican men (but I repeat myself) on the committee know they aren’t deft enough to ask questions without it blowing up in their faces. So bringing in a ringer, who I’m guessing is probably an employment law defense attorney, to basically conduct a deposition makes a certain amount of sense. But it also opens them up to questions of why they aren’t capable of doing their own jobs - I mean, we saw a lot of very old Senators (again, I repeat myself) ask very stupid questions about social media. I have a feeling this is going to not go particularly well for them, whatever the format - but I’m also not entirely sure they care.
And after listening to Pod Save America yesterday, I’m not entirely sure we won’t see a John Marshall situation after the midterms, with the Dems taking the Senate and McConnell saying “fuck it, hold a vote” whether it’s Kavaughan or not.

And soon goodbye Mueller, I guess.
I don’t think Trump pulls the trigger on Rosenstein or Mueller unless the GOP retains control of both Houses of Congress. The GOP will give him cover and we’ll have to wait until 2020 to do anything. But if the Dems take the House, he’s looking at impeachment if he tries a Saturday Night Massacre move. Now, maybe the Senate GOP saves him in impeachment, but he’s still going to be facing multiple Congressional investigations for the next two years, and he won’t be able to control himself when that shit-luge hits him.

It’s not even that they’re deft enough to ask the questions, but that there isn’t a single woman on the panel of GOPers who can ask questions. The use of proxies - lawyers - to ask is meant to sidestep the optics of an all white older male panel of GOPers trying to attack a credible woman who accuses a loyal right wing extremist of being a sex predator.
After the GOP refused to hold a vote for Garland, that they’ll turn around and lame duck whoever Trump serves up with a rubber stamp will be particularly galling and remind everyone that the GOP doesn’t give a shit about the rule of law or the rules, but whatever can give them absolute power and overturn Roe, Griswold, and roll back civil/voting rights and the safety net, all while giving millionaires like Trump all the benefits and none of the harms while everyone deals with the burdens.

that it needs a professional questioner, an ‘order’ and borders on the trappings of a trial, not a congressional hearing

I get the optics issue, but it opens them up to all sorts of other criticisms.
As for a lame duck appointment and confirmation, it wouldn’t surprise me, now that I’ve thought about it some more. But I’m also willing to bet they figure that most voters wouldn’t remember by 2020 anyway. I’d hope they’re wrong, but I suspect they’d be right on that calculus.

I don’t think so. McConnell’s on a sworn mission to get Kavanaugh onto the SC, regardless of any other circumstances, and to do so ASAP. If he can’t get the votes in September or October, he’s not going to have them in November. And if he doesn’t have the votes (or doesn’t think he has), Brett Kavanaugh will likely decide that spending more time with his lawyers family is a better option, and withdraw - rather than give Democrats the “win” of seeing Trump’s (heartily-endorsed) nominee get shot down. Especially if the election is looming.

McConnell didn’t want Kavanaugh, from what I’ve read, knew there was too much of a paper trail, and that it’d be a shitshow. A lame duck appointment comes with Kavanaugh withdrawing or not getting confirmed and Trump/McConnell trying to force someone through before the Dems have control.
