The Impeachment Trial of Donald Trump - Closing Arguments

Good lord. I have Trumpista FB friends (longtime IRL work colleagues I’ve known since long before) who are going back and forth right now about how Trump never tweeted anything about Kansas last night and it’s all a media hoax.
Is there any bottom to this?

I can no longer tell the difference between bot, troll, and true believing Trumper They really think any criticism of things he’s actually done is fake and that “We shut up when Obama was President and didn’t complain.” The amount of people in this country who are committed to this cult is just surreal. I’m actually optimistic about beating him in November. Less so about how the healing will be since Trump along with right wing media and Trump political allies have created this cult.

My thought on this particular thing is this:
1. We should expect the president to know at least the major geography of the US.
2. We do all make mistakes, and sometimes learn something that lots of other people knew.
3. He corrected himself.
4. It would have been better if he had added an “I goofed” tweet, but that might have been lost in the storm.
In the grand scheme, I’m way more angry about children in cages and his upcoming attempts to gut Medicaid.

I ran across one of these via a friend’s post on FB. Their case rests on the screenshots of the 2 tweets with the times in them. The incorrect tweet shows a time that is AFTER the tweet of the corrected message. These idiots apparently don’t understand how timezones work with the Twitter dates.
re: #3 Belafon
Considering that the right wing howlers made 57 states an ongoing thing re: Obama, the media should focus on Trump’s incessant inability to identify basic geography about anything anywhere. He is incurious and doesn’t care.
At the same time, I do agree that there are more important things, like say Trump’s gutting of CDC pandemic prevention programs by cutting the budget and cutting the CDC budget significantly from just 2 years ago. We are less prepared to deal with crises, and he and the GOP just don’t care.
They’d rather build walls that crash down in a light breeze or put kids in cages and separate them from their families because bigots gotta bigot.

I mean if he could be the slightest bit self-depreciating, it probably would be shrugged off a little easier but because he has his propagandists doubling down on it, it makes it more amplified. In the end, I’m voting against Trump because of the kids in cages and not because of his ignorance of geography but when I have to hear that his ignorance of geography is actually a virtue or how “he really meant both Kansas City”, it’s exhausting.

This isn’t even that sophisticated. It’s literally just a screenshot of the corrected tweet.

They twisted everything Obama said into make him out to be this snob who had no understanding of Middle America. If you read Obama’s memoir, you will learn that he is as much a product of his mother’s family as he is his father’s. Obama understands “real America” better than Trump ever will.
My hope for the closing arguments is that the Democrats call out all the Republican lies during the “hearing” No if, and, or buts as they say. The republicans lied about secret hearings and brought up other conspiracies. If It was up to me, I would also cal out the chief justice for letting it pass. WE should have no more fucks to give.

So today begins the hysteria about the “first four” primaries, in 4 states that have a total population of @ 12.7 million (under 4% of the US population), represent 25 total electoral votes, and only two of which are even moderately competitive in the presidential election (NH and NV.)
Not sure about the others, but I can tell you that here in SC, while they swarm like locusts before the primaries, not a single candidate will set foot in the state from then on until the general election.
It’s such a farce.

There is no real functional difference at this point, much the same way there’s no real functional difference between a true believing racist and one who simply uses it for opportunistic gain. It all perpetuates the same thing in the end.
re: #3 Belafon
You’re right and if the President does NOT know a piece of information, he should have an aide look it up and confirm it for him BEFORE making a public statement.
But Trump never thinks he’s wrong, even when he is and Republicans and his followers and often the media will pretzel themselves to convince us Trump isn’t wrong, even when he is.

re: #13 BeachDem
The entire farce of the primaries is such that New Jersey comes in June after the nominee has been decided in Super Tuesday (where the real make/break occurs).
NJ has 126 delegates. The first 4 states have 155 (54 of which are SC) and are far less representative of the nation as a whole.

Oh no doubt, I mean I just cannot tell what’s a Russian bot talking point and what’s a Trump one? So much of our political history is being revised slowly before our eyes. It’s why I’m glad that we’re documenting a lot of this on video and on record because no matter what happens this fall, life will go on. It’s just a matter of how. As I said, I’m actually optimistic about beating Trump, I know you disagree and I respectfully do so but where I’m far more cynical is the healing process. Maybe that’s Biden’s end game after all. He really wants to expose by showing good will and faith just how awful the Republicans and right are? I don’t know.

Maybe make one early primary state based on how its demographics resemble the country as a whole and another based off of a state that was close in the last election. Iowa and New Hampshire aren’t representative of America as a whole.

But you see, if bigger states got to vote early, then the smaller states’ votes would be meaningless. Thus we must have the smaller states vote earlier so the larger states votes are rendered meaningless. That way we know we’re getting the REAL American voice heard! ///
re: #20 Targetpractice
Few will actually ever visit NJ because 1) the ad costs are so high since it falls into either NYC metro ad rates or Philly ad rates; 2) the June primary is after everything is decided (usually by Super Tuesday); and 3) no one considers NJ to be representative of the nation as a whole when by demographics it should be. Just because it’s geographically on a coast doesn’t diminish the fact that it actually better reflects the nation as a whole.

The primaries always start in some of the smallest and whites states in the Union, while large states with populations more representative of the US as a whole don’t come for weeks or months after the nomination has been “clinched.”

And as far as trying to expose GOP bad faith by showing good will and faith? Sorry, it simply doesn’t work that way. Playing a soft hand and appealing to the better angels of a group that has gotten its unfettered power through unlimited bad faith is kind of exactly how we got to where we are to begin with. Obama tried to reach across the aisle constantly and had those attempts hung around his neck like an albatross time and time again. The GOP has gotten away with so much false equivalence because of the assumption of good faith on their part while they poison the well over and over again. The continued assumption of good faith on their part is just going to send the message that they can still do whatever they want with impunity and get the benefit of the doubt, all while casting aspersions on Dems and having said aspersions taken as gospel truth.
The fact that he’s seeing this in real time with the Hunter/Burisma bullshit and still makes this appeal sends the message to me that he’s far too nostalgic to do what needs to be done against the GOP at this point.

I really think we’re seeing some of the unintended consequences of the Constitutional Convention’s compromises. I’m not knocking the founders but the differences in our geography are so different than they are now and geography was considered when devising things like the EC and Congress. And when I say geography, I’m including demographics. The southern states wanted to count black people as part of their states for political power even though they had no intentions of letting black people of any gender participate in democracy.

Yeah the WaPo to their credit has an article about his geography misunderstandings. Remember when he blamed the Baltic States for the wars in the former Yugoslavia? I’m getting tired that if I call out this ignorant moron on his ignorance of geography and refusal to actually read or watch anything that isn’t treating him like how North Korean propaganda treats the Kims that it means I’m some kind of elitist. Geography was one of the first things I learned as a kid. My parents encouraged me to learn where states were and their capitals and later countries. That should be something we value in our President because American presidents regardless of what you feel the US’s role in the world should be should understand the world. I don’t even want to know how he thinks about Central and South America’s geography.

The bolded is one of the most maddening things about the corporate media, namely the strive for “balance” by treating every GOP argument/gripe/moan/whine as being made in good faith, no matter how blindingly obvious it is exactly the opposite.
Case in point, the “procedure” BS that is being used as the entire basis for the impeachment “defense,” which relies upon one being dumb enough to believe that the WH would ever cooperate with Congressional investigations if only those investigations were conducted in a manner that the WH approves of.

And truly, neither are Nevada or South Carolina.
Nevada has one of the highest concentrations of Hispanics in the nation, and South Carolina follows on Feb. 29 as one of the states with the highest share of African Americans. Nevada is one of the least white states in the country. While South Carolina still has roughly the same white population as the United States overall, the strong Democratic lean of its black voters means the primary is much more nonwhite than the state…
With the exception of New Hampshire, the residents of the early states have disproportionately lower income and levels of education. None of the states rank high in young registered Democrats, and workers in non-goods industries like technology or trade get short shrift as well…
In 2016, these early states made up just 3 percent Democratic primary voters.

It’s especially maddening because of how two-faced it is. Assuming Republicans are always acting in good faith, and Dems always acting in bad faith isn’t balance at all. But it’s what passes for ‘balance’ and ‘impartiality’ because they’ve internalized the idea of ‘liberal media bias’. Between overcorrection and just being complicit, the thumb is so hard on the GOP’s side of the scale and yet we still have the same goddamn song and dance about needing to be more understanding about “conservative voices” and all that fucking “Both sides same thing” shit.
It all started with KAC’s Orwellean inspired “alternative facts” where Trump’s inaguaration was the greatest popular event ever when in reality, it was under attended compared to his predecessors and also featured his immediate Republican predecessor and thank you GWB for speaking for all of us when you told Mrs. Obama that it was “some weird shit.” Because it was. Democrats should have nuked the caucus system and gone to a ranked choice primary nationwide along with moving all the Super Tuesday states to the day after IA and NH - diminishing importance of IA and NH, and heightening the importance of the rest of the nation. Frankly, they should do the primaries in a few weeks time. Compact and consolidate, and moving the timeframe so that states like NJ actually matter more than NH or IA.

It’s less a new problem and more an existing one getting worse. The acceptance and promotion of GOP bad faith arguments, in conjunction with the demonization and minimization of the press has been with us since at least the days of St. Ron, all Trump did was raise both to their (illegal) conclusions. Where once the GOP was content to use small lies to sell bigger ones, and mutter about the “liberal press” whenever caught in those lies, now they openly wage war with the media to sell those big lies to an increasingly desperate party base.

Yeah, Reagan’s asshole behavior hasn’t gotten enough coverage which is why I’m glad his ugliness got exposed on those Nixon tapes and later his administration’s lie about the genocide in El Salvador done by their guy in the name of anti-communism.
One could argue that the difference between St. Ron and Hair Furor is the difference between a professional actor and a conman. Don’t the states have control over this?
The party decides. In the case of NV and SC:
The Democratic Party moved them up for the 2008 election to offset the lack of diversity of New Hampshire and Iowa, and to represent more regions of the United States. In a Democratic National Committee vote, Nevada was selected over Arizona, and South Carolina was chosen over Alabama.

Think the best way to look at it is that, even if there are no further articles of impeachment, the metric shit-ton of evidence is gonna bury that Cheeto-colored turd.
Sadly, at least half of the “front-runners” in the DNC primaries have either said aloud or intimated that they will “move on” if they win, which means we may see a repeat of the new pres pulling a Ford by declaring that the crimes of the Trump admin should not be investigated but instead it’s in the nation’s “best interest” to “move forward.”
Get this, the Trumpers are trying to act like “No, you’re stupid, you didn’t know there was a Kansas City, Kansas before this.” I knew. What always surprised me was that KC, MO was the the bigger of the two but that happens. The original Miami was in Ohio not Florida. And Miami, Florida is a lot bigger. They just cannot admit that Trump doesn’t care about the geography of the country he’s supposedly making great again. And it’s something that if a Democrat had done, they would be using non stop to point how Dem elitists don’t care about the heartland and some shit like that. It’s really fucking exhausting to hear lectures from the likes of Matt Schlaap about “Washington elites” when that fucker’s been padding his wallet from Washington for most of his adult career. As a native of the DC area, if the right wing political power elites hate us so much, I wish they would get the fuck out of our metropolitan area.

It may have to be states like NY that end up being the tip of the spear in regards to criminal prosecution. In any case, I fully expect a mass exodus of Trump ass-lickers knee deep in his extensive crimes to leave the country for the UK, Israel, and Hungary- places with currently Trumpish leaders. The UK would be their preferred destination with its current Conservative Party PM but who knows how the legal system would deal with a US Extradition. They might have to leave very quickly for other less desirable rat’s nests.
Russia would be their final bailout Hail Mary but life under Putin would automatically mean pulling off the mask fully to reveal their true allegiances- To themselves only.

This is one of those things that is going to really haunt the GOP after Wed, namely the reality I pointed out a couple weeks back that voting for “acquittal” does not afford them a “Get Out of Jail Free” card with Trump. Coming out weeks or months from now and catching his attention by declaring that his call wasn’t “perfect” but it wasn’t impeachable is only going to draw his ire and lead to utterly irrational freakouts on his part.

More like a murder trial where the jury cut off the prosecution and went into deliberations. While in deliberations, prosecutors informs the court/jurors that they found the literal smoking gun, and the jury says to the Court: “No thanks. We can’t possibly allow this to continue on. It’d be unfair to the defendant.”

A murder trial where the jury sat in on the discovery hearings, working with the defense to decide what evidence would and wouldn’t appear at trial, all while criticizing the prosecution for not working with the defense “in good faith” to find a way to avoid a trial altogether. Oh, and the bulk of the jury also believes that the prosecutor is really the killer and wants to put him on trial instead.

The one statistic that gives me optimism about the mortality rate of the coronavirus is that, of the 159 cases outside China, there has been only one death to date. The possible higher number of deaths in Wuhan may reflect nothing more than a higher incidence of infections. Seasonal flu has killed about 10,000 Americans over the past 4 months. I’m sure they will add this new virus to the mix for the flu vaccine for next year— and this may encourage more people to get the shot.

Declaring it a “show trial” just furthers the humiliation that these idiots are setting up their party for. Show trials generally began with the verdict already decided and the “trial” all about destroying the character of the accused, usually with party officials issuing denouncements or coerced “witnesses” testifying at gunpoint about the guilt of the person(s) in the docket.
To call this a “show trial” is the usual IMAX-level of projection, as it began with the verdict already decided (Trump is “innocent”) and has done nothing to prove such and everything to destroy the character the accusers.

i’ve been following discussions about whether trumps lawyers can be disciplined for what they are doing
many say no because this rule 3.3(a)(1):
A lawyer shall not knowingly: (1) make a false statement of fact or law to a tribunal or fail to correct a false statement of material fact or law previously made to the tribunal by the lawyer;
and that impeachment doesnt neatly fit the definition of “tribunal” - no “neutral official” making a ruling, nor is there a “binding legal judgment”.
but apparently further down there is also rule 3.9 and it specifically refers to work before legislative bodies and incorporates Rules 3.3(a) through (c), 3.4(a) through (c).
so one can hope
Pat Cipollone, fact witness and co-conspirator, begs the Senate to reject the articles of impeachment.
I hope to be seeing him at a disciplinary hearing soon.— Elie Mystal (@ElieNYC) February 3, 2020

This is a pretty tough question and the only answer I can give you is: Maybe. It really all depends on how Kaepernicks skills would be after missing several seasons. IF he regained his old form, he’d be entering the game with a lot more experience than Garropolo has, but it was really the SF Defense that coughed up the game in the 4th quarter, which Kap would have had no control over anyway.

Impossible to know, but probably not. SF got to the SB because of their defense and run game. It isn’t likely a change in quarterback would mean a change in offensive scheme. Garoppolo had a couple interceptions but Kaepernic was known to have some problems with turnovers in his day too. KC won the game because either SFs defense collapsed in the last 6 minutes, or they just finally figured them out. 6 of one half dozen of the other.
Also, let’s not forget Kaep was originally benched after SF hit an 11 game losing streak and he had one of the worst passing performances in SF history with a net 6 yards for the game.

The GOP has abandoned its faith in our nation and our future. They only crave absolute power, minorities and women knowing their place, and wealth concentrated in few hands, including theirs. They have no loyalty to the Constitution so it’s a waste of breath to plead for them to do the right thing. Of course, some may just be cowards, afraid of losing their jobs because Trump speaks meanly about them. Many may be, like Trump, working for Putin. After all, he is funding their party.

“This curing cancer business,” Limbaugh sneered. “It was a lift, from ‘The West Wing’ TV show. Pretty close to verbatim. But in addition to that, Obama promised to cure cancer in his State of the Union address in 2009, 2010, and last year, which is why last night he said ‘once and for all.’ And then whatever chance we had at curing cancer was blown to smithereens when he put Joe Biden in charge of it.”

Yeah, the seasonal flu is the most under-reported epidemic that apparently happens every year so no biggie (argh!).

Hard to know. In his final games as a starter, he was erratic, to say the least. He overthrew a wide receiver by so much that the ball sailed completely off the field, slamming into a guy on the sideline who was (incorrectly) figuring he was well off the field and out of harm’s way.
Gave him a mild concussion.

Rush Limbaugh’s obituary is second on the list of obituaries I want to be alive to see. First is Trump, of course.
Speaking to a caller in 2015, Limbaugh said that Americans should thank smokers.
“Earlier you were saying about smoking, that people ought to be thankful that there are smokers, because the money gotten from smoking helps to fund all these child programs and everything?” a caller told Limbaugh. “But that’s like saying I’m glad that there’s bumper accidents because then auto mechanics would still have jobs and it improves the economy.”

It is now very clear that Bernie is a problem for the Democratic party. He has been very much about building a popularity campaign among the 18-25 y.o. demo, the demo that spends most of the time on various social media that is not Facebook (which is Trump territory, given Facebook has been the home to so many interest groups for the 50+ crowd.)
Problem is, on election day the young folk are the lowest turnout, the old folk the highest turnout.

This means that there is a real danger that Bernie is going to split the Democratic party, if not in formal structure then at least in turn-out dynamics.
Will disaffected Berners vote in November, if Bernie is not on the ticket???
i read somewhere today that bernie is going after the Democratic establishment while the rest of the dem candidates are going after the republican establishment
The Limbaugh news reminds me of a scene from “The Lion In Winter”, where Alais accuses Eleanor of poisoning Rosamund…
“No, I never poisoned Rosamund. Oh, I prayed for her to drop, and smiled a little when she did.”
I know there are those who will call us ghouls for wishing him ill - most of them will have cheered each bit of bad health news about RBG - but I don’t think it’s possible to overestimate the corrosive effect of Limbaugh on America. He made it okay for the Right to indulge all their worst thoughts and feelings, and unlike a lot of extremist media types, he did it without appearing to be batshit crazy - a glib and humorous propagandist.
One conservative i knew said he’d first heard Rush while driving through Sacramento, and immediately thought, “He thinks just like me!” He and Gingrich taught the Right that they could get away with shameless lying, as long as they truly were shameless. Which of course paved the way for the most brazen and shameless liar of all.

It’s like how I felt when Andrew Breitbart. Why should i feel bad for a guy who made his name demonizing people and also producing fake videos designed to get people fired. I remembered Shirley Sherrod when Breitbart died. And now as Rush announces he’s sick with lung cancer, I’ll remember him mocking Michael J. Fox for wanting stem cell research, something that Rush only opposed because it was the GOP party line not because Rush has any serious thoughts about bioethics or the viability of stem cell treatment and because he wanted a cheap laugh from the yokels who hang onto his every word. Rush Limbaugh should be viewed the same way Father Coughlin is. A malignant ass pimple on the American psyche.

I don’t know if it will help him or not but teh fact that he did is certainly why I’m not showing any sympathy. Plus the fact that he thought it was the peak of wit to belittle a 13 year old girl as a dog on the air. He never apologized. I agree. We thankfully did learn about him as a bad part of history in school. I’m hoping that Rush will be rememebred the same way too. He didn’t offer critiques of liberalism. Just the farts of a stupid bully who spoke for the resentments of millions of bigots who couldn’t accept that the country changed. I knew the Republican Party was severely fucked as a brand when Rush was deemed their most influential member. It’s too bad that Rush never got cocky and tried to run for office because to quote him I would have loved to seen him fail as a politician. I would have loved to seen the likes of Pelosi, Biden, the Clintons, or Obama run circles around him because Rush is one of the most ignorant people out there. I think that’s what I’ve always hated about Rush. The whole dickhead attitude to other people who suffered. He made dickhead remarks about Kurt Cobain too. It’s why I laugh at the conesrvatives saying “Be nice, he was a huge influence on conservatives everywhere” and I am thinking “Yeah? Manchin sounding like he’s leaning convict, but who the fuck knows what he’ll do.
A guy I knew in High School sent me a friend request on FB over Christmas. We were pretty good friends back then.
Nearly all his posts are reposts of crazy ‘Erik von Daniken’, ancient aliens shit. Mostly, I’ve ignored them, but one the other day seemed to cry out for a response. It said, “The Great Pyramid at Giza is at 29.972458 degrees North. The speed of light is 299,792,458 meters per second. Coincidence?”
I responded, “Seeing as how degrees, meters, and seconds are all arbitrary units invented thousands of years after the pyramid was built - Yeah.”
Interesting news about Limbaugh. I had cancer and managed to beat it. Unlike many other Americans, I had the resources for the proper treatment. Needless to say Limbaugh will also have whatever resources might be needed, though apparently his prognosis is much worse than mine. Unlike him, I have done what I could to make those kinds of resources available to others, though with less success than a decent person would hope. In fact, Rush Limbaugh has done the opposite. He has been a major factor in denying decent health care to millions of others, a national disgrace that is unique in the industrialized world. I hope he does recover and learns something from the experience but I am not optimistic on either count.

Exactly. I mean, I know you can get lung cancer if you DON’T smoke, but being a regular smoker of large cigars certainly increases ones chances of getting the disease. Rush isn’t exactly free of blame here.
I reiterate: Fuck Cancer and Fuck Limbaugh.
Limbaugh will seek out and be able to get the highest levels of medical care one could hope for under the circustances. His wealth allows him to go wherever he wants for specialist care and cost is not a concern.
His nonstop propaganda about health care in this country led to curbing health care options for millions of Americans. Right wingers who follow his know nothing approach helped gut Obamacare and means that millions of Americans who face a similar prognosis don’t have any options and will shoulder the costs entirely because they are without coverage. They will be saddled with medically induced bankruptcies as hospitals try to recoup the costs and some hospitals will continue to go bankrupt in the red states that didn’t expand Medicare coverage since they don’t get reimbursed in a timely manner for indigent care.
Early diagnosis and preventative care under Obamacare helps improve public health, but Trump and Rush types have fought against all that.
So fuck Rush. I fear for the millions of Americans who don’t have his means to deal with such a prognosis and diagnosis. The GOP doesn’t give a fuck for any of them.

And you guys gotta realize that the electorate is more moderate too. A lot of the more radical proposals give some people pause. My mom for example isn’t sold on free college for all and I’ll be honest I’m not either. I am for free college as long as the term includes any trade schools or any other type of training - such as training to be a barber, electrician, or dental tech - and we also do some type of mandating of equivalent training, and set standards for the schools. I would also require every school, no matter the level, to require classes on government.

You still can’t accept that Bernie lost the Democratic primary last time? No, it wasn’t the DNC that stopped Bernie, it’s that Clinton actually had more support from Democrats. Hard for you to imagine, perhaps, but that is what happened.

I am for free college as long as the term includes any trade schools or any other type of training - such as training to be a barber, electrician, or dental tech - and we also do some type of mandating of equivalent training, and set standards for the schools. I would also require every school, no matter the level, to require classes on government.
Yes, I just think what Bernie proposes leaves those behind who don’t pursue the traditional 4 year undergraduate experience. It’s too broad.

Am I alone here in being intrigued by Manchin’s censure suggestion? I don’t know if he has any way to get it past McConnell to a vote, but if he could, it puts the Lamar Alexanders and Lisa Murkowskis of the world on the spot, at least a little. Alexander, especially - if he’s on the record as endorsing the findings of the House managers and the case they presented, even if he’s not going to vote to remove, the optics of a no vote on censure look bad.

Bernie’s a TV show that keeps getting shown despite shit ratings and a tiny fanbase. The network execs knew it was a mistake to pick it up for a second season, but they had enough money that they could afford to gamble that this season would be the winner. And if it fails, there’s other shows that are more popular with stronger followings that are there to take it’s place.

it’s not nothing and im all for it because a lot has changed since saturday - ie some R’s tipped their hand
electoral-vote.com this past saturday
A: This is an idea that’s being bandied about, at least by the commentariat. We doubt that it comes to fruition, though. Donald Trump is thin-skinned enough that even a mild rebuke would enrage him, and he would likely try to punish any senator who dared vote for it. So, Republicans probably wouldn’t want to try it. Meanwhile, the Democrats would likely prefer not to give folks like Cory Gardner and Susan Collins an “out.” They want vulnerable Republicans to be firmly on the record when it comes to enabling Trump, and they don’t want to create a mushy middle where a GOP senator can effectively have it both ways.
As to historical precedents, there have been a few actions taken by the Congress that could be interpreted as presidential censures. The clearest was indeed targeted at Andrew Jackson, and was the work of his Whig enemies in the Senate, who were unhappy about his handling of the Second Bank of the United States. Once Jackson’s Democratic Party regained control of the Senate, they quickly expunged the censure. This precedent is probably why presidential censures are rare-to-non-existent. What is the point, if they are only going to last until the chamber changes hands?

A few days ago, Dave Jolly (former Republican Congressman, now a commentator on MSNBC) noted that there is a critical number in all elected Republicans minds, 92%. Tht is the minimum number of base votes they need to carry in order to swin an election. The Republicans seem to be caught in the dilemma of standing on two canoes right now, that of the general electorate and that of the base. The two groups are drifting apart and they may not be able to keep one foot in each.
I suspect that they are concerned that even a censure will alienate more than 8% of the base.

A censure vote is nice as an abstract, but in the eyes of Trump such a vote would be no less a “betrayal” of him than a vote to convict, so there’s no chance Mitch would ever allow it to actually come to a vote. Or that, if the Senate Dems found a way around him, 4 “moderates” would break ranks to help it pass.

I have been happy to see he’s not doing well in the age of Trump.
I realized last night after reading from a few Berners what they were going to do today, regardless of how well she does in the caucus. What I realized is they’re going to demand that she, “for the good of the party,” drop out so that Bernie can run unopposed as the “progressive” choice compared to Biden. They are so arrogant that they assume that, if they force Warren out of the race in favor of Bernie, that all of Warren’s supporters will go to Bernie.

“Sorry I’m not who you think I am” - I responded to your tweet, which claimed (as many Berners do) that the DNC did not “allow” Bernie to be the candidate in 2016. Your claim is false. It is also a popular Berner talking point. I made no statement if you’re a “D” or “R”.

There’s a very serious “IT’S OUR TURN!!!” vibe going on, which I put largely down to an attitude I heard more than one Berner espouse in ‘16 when it was pointed out that voting Stein or staying home would lead to Trump’s election. They declared that it would actually be a “good” thing if Trump were elected, because A) the DNC would realize their error and be ready to nominate a “progressive” in 2020 and B) Trump would so fuck the country over a bramble patch that tens of millions of Americans would join the “revolution” to put a “progressive” in office in order to “fix” everything.
It’s hard not to see that attitude being the guiding principles of Berners this go-around as they seem to think that the DNC somehow owes Bernie the nomination.
re: #434 Citizen K
With the great irony being that their main gripe in ‘16 was that Hilary was being ‘anointed’ and felt ‘entitled’ to the nomination

You do you. Those of us who feel differently have our reasons. If any prominent figure on the left such as President Obama or Secretary a Clinton was diagnosed with cancer, Limbaugh would he yucking it up. Perhaps he will show some restraint if he recovers and will act like a damned human being.
I don’t wish Limbaugh die a horrible death. I’m not like them.
I do note the irony that he’s contracted cancer while being a cancerous tumor in our body politik.
The difference is I don’t wish retribution or helicopter rides. I just wish he’d stop. Sounds like he’s going to.

I have so much music bouncing around in my head.
That was written by Leonard Cohen as I’m sure you know, and they nailed it.
They were good.
Got to have a gimmick or 19 or be willing to live on the road for 7 years just to get a sniff.
Brutal.
In high school I had friends that played locally in small groups. I knew a few folks in college who studied music.
The next chance I had to really listen to music was 30 years later when I ended up with some time and had access to music through youtube. I am still blown away at how much talent is out there. And how little reward, outside of personal good feelings, most folks reap for all their hard work. It just continuously amazes me.

Well, as of December 2019
Since April of this year, the Democratic candidates have spent more than $4.2 million in the state, according to an analysis of campaign filing data. That doesn’t include the cost of having more than 650 campaign staff on the ground, the indirect spending that goes into staffers’ rent, food and gas or the amount tourists spend in the state.
So, in answer to your question—a shit ton.

It’s no surprise that Trump wants to go after enemies. The silver lining is that the effort will be leaky, incompetent, staffed by a variety of sycophantic imbeciles and dipshits, and prone to abrupt changes in strategy driven by Trump’s mood swings.

OFFS, I guess the Americans With Disabilities Act means nothing to them. I’m sorry but so many people are uneducated about politics in this country.
Joe Biden who in 2012 said transgender rights is one of the most important civil rights issues of our age is the same as the guy who pushed the FMA on us.

Yeah that person, I think a woman, seems to be filming with her selfie cam, which explains the mirror image and also the crappy video quality.

I just…I’m too tired to trawl through Biden’s actual career to point out that he is as stalwart a Dem as they come and nowhere near as bad as Bush ever was even at his best. It always seems to fall on deaf ears and just ends up people running screaming either toward MAGAtown or into the BERN OR BUST camp anyway.
This is the shit I see constantly, and it just makes it feel all so goddamn useless.

I was a member of an Irish Travel Tips group on FB. I know the country pretty well since I lived there a month. Completely got taken over by bots who loved to play into their hypersensitivity towards Trump criticisms. God, I’m just grateful that my parents aren’t like that.

One of the things I often say to people who slam “Christians” is: “Imagine how different the world would be if most of those so-called Christians actually LIVED LIKE JESUS.”
I keep on telling people who want more of what Bernie offers to work on local races. But they insist on acting like we need a soon to be 80 year old Senator from a lily white state with a record of sayign some pretty controversial things will win and win big. I think Bernie would do better than many ehre but even then, I’m not sold and I’m definitely not sold on him as an effective executive. He has no surrogates that I wish the otehrs have and that to my disappointment does include AOC who I like but I think makes a huge mistake casting her boat to Bernie as someone who is proud of both her millennial status and Latina heritage. Same thing with Talib, Omar, and Jayapal. You’re throwing your lot in with someone who does not prioritize immigrants.

See, that’s why I always loathed the fundamentalists who talk about how we need to be more Christ like yet live like rock stars. My grand uncle was a priest in a poor part of Louisiana. He wasn’t flying around in a jet and doing bizarre rituals where he treated POTUS like a God. He cared about his congregation- predominately poor and African American just as he had cared about the young men he was a chaplain to during WWII.

Yeah, I’m agnostic but even I know that the Jesus story is that he was someone who was with the less well off. Ever see Franklin Graham? Falwell Jr? Jeffries? act a refugee center? a soup kitchen? Meanwhile I see them perfectly content to latch on to power and the one at least in modetn times I think really started that was Billy Graham himself. He loved the America’s “minister” title he got. He still was better than his son though but thats a low bar.

It’s not even just Javanka. Rudy’s stepson has a job there. I think one of Barr’s does too. And Pence’s nephew is a big part of the re-election team too. I don’t even think Hunter is advising his Dad let alone is a big part of his campaign.
By this time next week we’ll all be talking about New Hampshire. Then on 3 March the big states will weigh in… and I expect this circus to be over.
Maybe the big states will split deeply enough to have the band play on … but I now rank that as less likely.

The RNC Opps Research is probably salivating at their gums to run against Bernie. They’ve called Dems socialists for years and now they got one. And he’s got some shady issues too that the Berners have completely ignored since he promised them the world. You think the Biden hugs are awkward? When Rush dies the MSM will declare him “a man who had his finger on the pulse of conservatism,” “a lightning rod,” “a tireless provocateur who needled his political opponents.” But they’ll never call him what he really is.
Back when Twitter was young, I remember late-night TV host Conan O’Brien , who apparently didn’t tweet at that time, rambling on about how puzzled he was that people would send out short messages describing what they were doing at any given time. Conan couldn’t figure out why it would be so popular.

They’re twins of the same madness. It’s a shame because FB for a long time was pretty apolitical. I still use my account for my family and other things but I do not actively discuss politics on there for the most part. Why? Because there’s so many ignorant people out there who think memes and being a shit talker is the way to talk.

See, I have a different take on this whole “I’ve had a loved one/friend go through cancer and wouldn’t wish that on anyone” thing - I did, in fact, have a friend who went through Stage 4 cancer (she’s in remission now, thankfully) and while it was happening, one emotion that kept coursing through me was ice-cold, bitter rage - why her? She was such a wonderful person with so much to offer the world - why did she have to go through this torture while nasty, evil, awful people were waltzing around with a smirk on their face and a spring in their step?
You better believe that if I’d been given the power to snap my fingers, take the cancer from her, and give it to someone more deserving, I would have.

A lot of the leftists really do show there’s an unfortunate overlap that sometimes exist. I’m a social liberal. There’s some parts of socialism that appeal to me, some of capitalism, some of both, and some of neither. I don’t like rigid economics and I don’t care who plays that game.

True, there was always going to be someone like Rush emerge and create a model for an echochamber. That’s what makes the idea that liberals live in echo chambers so funny to me. There’s a lot more in fighting on the left side than right side generally speaking. It’s why the line about Dems falling in love and Republicans falling in line comes from.

The whole thing is exactly why I’m wary of the folks who raise classism over all and discard intersectionality as a distraction, because they absolutely tend to dismiss the struggle of folks that are for the most part disconnected from pure economic concerns, or even only tangentially economic but absolutely wouldn’t have happened if not for race, or sexism, or ableism, etc. The burning of any concept of “identity politics” what I’m seeing repeatedly, and it’s galling to see it working, and working, and working.

Rush really never adapted to the internet medium and I think Hannity and Trump became more chummy than Rush and Trump. I dunno why. If I had to guess, it’s probably the New York connection but while Trump has praised Rush, Lumpy is the one he cries to when things are tough.
