New Info from CRU Hacking Investigation

Environment • Views: 2,933

DeSmogBlog’s Mitchell Anderson has new information on the investigation into the cyber-burglary of Britain’s Climate Research Unit (CRU), thoroughly refuting the claims that the leak came from a “whistle-blower:” Who Hacked the CRU?

An interesting post on IT-NETWORKS picks apart what is currently known about the hack job and what it can tell us about the identity of the hacker and their motivations.

Forensic data analysis reveals that the hacker was in a time zone somewhere in the eastern US or Canada. Rather than a single breach of security, the hacker was also able to access confidential CRU on four different occasions over a six-week period.

The IT-NETWORKS analysis also points out that only a small portion of the emails stolen was actually released. The hacker took the trouble of sifting out all the routine messages about holidays and fire alarms and possibly much more.

What was removed remains unknown but clearly the hacker was trying to discredit legitimate scientists and presumably discarded whatever would not help the contrived scandal of “climategate”.

The hacker also focused specifically on four scientists who had long been the targets of US based climate deniers because their peer-reviewed scientific papers had been used to back the IPCC’s reports on global warming.

Out of dozens of researchers at the CRU, 95% of the 1,073 emails released were sent or received by Phil Jones, the head of the CRU; Professor Keith Briffa, who studied tree rings; Tim Osborn, who worked on climate modeling for modern and archaeological data; and Mike Hulme, director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research.

After the final batch of emails was stolen on the eve of the COP 15 conference, the hacker then broke into the Real Climate site, disabled access from the real administrators, and tried to post a fake story that climate change was all a myth.

All of this indicates that the hacker was no 14 year old in their parents basement but a professional with an agenda. Sir David King, the UK’s former chief scientist, concluded the complex theft was the work of US-based climate deniers backed by carbon money or a foreign government.

Here is the very interesting post cited by DeSmogBlog at IT-Networks, with more details: Hacking into the mind of the CRU climate change hacker.

Huh interesting stuff. We'll probably never know who did it, but at least now we're learning a little bit more about they did it...

Well, sure, all that and a bag of chips will get you page 8 in the Washington Post. An alternative theory is the hacker was a whistle blower who had his account suspended and then had to hack in so he could blow his whistle.

Prove that didn't happen.

Heh, Carbon Money, it's catchy. I wonder how it will hold up against paper or gold in the next few years?

This is a big revelation...

Of course someone had an agenda... everyone has an agenda. Even a 14 year old in in a basement has an agenda. When the CRU denied the FOIA requests, they had an agenda. An agenda won't make the material any less or more truthful.

Doesn't that also mean we have to prove that the hacker wasn't a robot sent back in time by an evil AI who wants us to be complacent about global warming so that humanity can get all but wiped out by rising flood waters paving the way for the rise of our efficient rust proof machine overlords?

re: #5 Walter L. Newton

Of course it is central to the discussion to determine the provenance of the Climategate emails. If they came from an internal leak, then it is poisoning the debate to suggest that they resulted from a "hacker".

Either way the cat is out of the bag and follow-up FOI requests will lay all the cards on the table.

Well lets assume its time travel on a sliding scale like Guns of the South and then can only send something a certain number of years back....

Plus they can't just wipe all the humans out, if they did that then we'd never invent them...

And what motivates the BBC... The head of the BBC's Pension Fund, Peter Dunscombe, is also the head of this company, The Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change.

The Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC) is a forum for collaboration on climate change for European investors. The group’s objective is to catalyse greater investment in a low carbon economy by bringing investors together to use their collective influence with companies, policymakers and investors. The group currently has over 50 members, including some of the largest pension funds and asset managers in Europe, and represents assets of around €4trillion. A full list of members is available on the membership page.

The super-sekrit, double-agent whistle-blower has been apprehended, and is currently being held in a 'blacksite' many miles beneath the Cheyenne Mountain Complex. John F. Kennedy and Elvis Presley are conducting the interrogation to determine more details about this whistle-blower's associations, which will be followed up with a re-education program conducted by Jim Morrison and Tupac Shakur. We simply can not have this double-agent speaking troof to the NWO powers.

There is big money on both sides of this issue, that's a provable fact. And that is sad, because that just muddies the water and sullies the whole of good science. The same as the wingnuts sully conservatism.

I agree, as I said downstairs...

The removal of the politicization of Science that will likely result from the fall out of the recent Climategates will ultimately be healthy for the Scientific industry itself.

I do think actually that the IPCC is probably past its sell by date.

Well, that's a good summation of the stakes involved, but doesn't really address my question.

In both cases, a large amount of secret documentation on a very important, very politically sensitive topic was released in an unauthorized fashion, and the authors of said material were asked to reconcile what they were saying in public and what they had said in private.

And in both cases, there was no questioning of the veracity of the information, only the propriety of how it was released.

While the CRU papers have been "cherry-picked" for the most inflammatory stuff for dissemination, the entire contents have been released, so literally anyone interested can see the full context of the most controversial parts.

I don't see how the dissemination of information is a bad thing for a matter as hugely important as this.

Both claim a scientific basis for their advocacy which seeks to influence the public on how it lives based upon certain declared truths.

Both has opponents seeking to examine thier science and both fought off those attempts by refusing to share their data. (Rightly or wrongly.)

Both had their servers accessed without permission and have become popular scandals.

Both have similar potential criminal or civil consequences for the 'hackers' and both had certain secrets let out of the bag.

Just my two cents. Seems that the Guardian is not considered to be a good source of scientific analysis when they post articles favorable to skeptics, but they are acceptable now:

"The Guardian’s analysis shows that a small group of just four of the scientists from among the dozens employed at the CRU were targeted in the sifting of email. They are: Phil Jones, the head of the CRU; Professor Keith Briffa, who studied tree rings; Tim Osborn, who worked on climate modelling for modern and archaeological data; and Mike Hulme, director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. All are either recipients or senders of all but 66 of the 1,073 emails, and almost all the rest are sent from mailing lists, such as the Met Office’s “scenarios” listing, to which at least one of the four would certainly belong."

Actually I quite like it.

Like wine, in parody there is also truth.

The CRU under Jones and the IPCC under Pachauri will go down in history as Scientology, not science.

I'm confident the resulting shake-ups unfolding in both institutions will result in this being rectified so that the comparison will no longer be accurate, though I really wonder if the IPCC will survive this intact. The CRU will also likely lose a great deal of funding and go back to being a small, back water University.

Its still early in the semester.

Also because of the weather conditions here we've had a remarkable number of snow days, as in the last week I only had class on Tuesday and Friday.

Finally because of how the site often doesn't start posting new topics till a bit after noon for someone on the east cost I can if I put my mind to it, wake up at 9, and do all my homework before then.

Thanks for asking though!

Weather, not Climate.

Yes because the normal "climate" here on the bay is pretty warm, I think before this in the three other years I've been hear I can only recall one or two snow days, let alone five of them over the course of two weeks.

Thus "The meteorological conditions, including temperature, precipitation, and wind, that characteristically prevail in a particular region." at my college are not predisposed towards giving me as many days off due to snow as they recently have.

Nor do I live in "A region of the earth having particular meteorological conditions" where piles of snow are a frequent occurrence even in winter, the bay tends to act as a moderator.

The amount of snow we've been getting at this particular college? Yes I find it unusual given my previous time here for what that is worth as I've only had four years worth of days to study how many days classes are called off due to snow...

As I mentioned in another post, I've been here seven previous semesters and can only recall one or two, maybe three days off for snow, not five all bunched together in two weeks.

Climate this or climate that aside, this winter, nor winters for the last 30 years are any good indicators of climate change. I have looked over chart after chart on snowfall averages up and down the east coast, and you would be surprised how much snow there has been, and how close other years come to this year, and in some cases, exceeding total snowfall.

Learned today about roof rakes so as soon as the local hardware store gets some in...other solution...snow socks...fill nylon knee highs with calcium chloride and toss them on top of the ice dams...

There is big money on both sides of this issue, that's a provable fact. And that is sad, because that just muddies the water and sullies the whole of good science. The same as the wingnuts sully conservatism.

Both sides need to come to the agreement that dishonesty should not be tolerated and we out it when ever and where ever it happens.

Money has corrupted the science. It's become advocacy.

I wasn't watching earlier but my kids told me that that happened earlier (not the killing part). Lady got tossed in the air then partner slipped. She hid the ice flat on her back. I don't think it's sexual tension, I think it's fear (guess that could be the same, though).

220 jamesfirecat  Sun, Feb 14, 2010 6:21:40pm

By the way I'm gonna bring out the worse joke ever just to put an end to all this punning.

Ahem.

Approximately three years ago, noted dolphin research scientist, Lopaka K. Espinda developed a theory:
"If seagulls were fed to dolphins every day for a month, the dolphins would never die."
After many failed attempts, Espinda finally got the research grant that he needed for the “Dolphin Feeding Project”.
The Dolphin Research Laboratories, “Dolphin Feeding Project” was carried out at Honolulu's, Kewalo Basin Yacht Harbor.
While elsewhere today, at the Honolulu Zoo the long awaited transfer of lions to the new Hawaii State Zoo on the Big Island, was taking place. After the trucks had left the Honolulu Zoo and were in-route to the airport, one of the lions escaped from the truck.
Police, Fire, Animal Control and Zoo officials were put on alert to be on the lookout for an escaped lion.
When the Governor was notified about the situation, he was heard to say: "I realize it is now the responsibility of the State if any one is hurt by that lion."
It can now be reported that this was the last and final day of the “Dolphin Feeding Project”. Espinda was in the Laboratory's food preparation room preparing the last of the seagulls to feed to the dolphins, as he opened the door he was shocked to find the escaped lion blocking his only pathway out. As he later told this reporter, "I knew that time was running out and that I must complete my project now, or I will never be able to get any new funding." He also stated that he was somewhat relieved to discover that the lion was sound asleep; he then cautiously tiptoed over the sleeping lion.
That is when the Police, Fire, Animal Control and Zoo officials arrived at the scene of the crime, the Police arrested Espinda, and the Zoo officials re-captured the lion.

He was arrested!

But what were the charges?

ILLEGAL TRANSPORTATION OF GULLS ACROSS THE STATE LION, FOR IMMORTAL PORPOISES

Sadly, my restaurant story is true. They did at least claim to serve all the wild stuff (claimed it was legal product of licensed big game hunting). The joint did serve this stuff as near as I can know.

It is also true that as group we had been drinking (a lot) and were summarily 86'd shortly after complaining that the pussy (lion?) was too tough.

There are some great new materials, foil-covered superadhesive rolls, that are code in a lot of northern areas. They go under the first couple feet of shingles from the eaves--but you have to raise the shingles to install the barrier.

I used to work with a guy who'd come into my office, tell me a joke (he was a terrible joke teller) taking three or four minutes to get the thing out.

Best lion joke I ever heard:

This missionary in Africa is walking along the savanna one day when he notices he's being stalked by a pride of lions. The next village is still two hours away, and being a man of peace, he has no gun.

At first he tries to ignore them, but they come closer and closer. He tries flinging stones, but hitting a lioness only makes the whole pride angry and aggressive. Finally he is reduced to running. As he goes, he prays: "O Lord, turn these savage lions into devout Christians, I beseech thee!"

Before the first lion can reach him, he stumbles, knocks his head on a rock and passes out.

When he comes to, the lions are sitting in a circle around him, looking at their meal, and chanting in unison: "For that which we are about to receive, we thank thee, O Lord!"

Bush lied, and Phil Jones has been waterboarded in Gitmo, that's the only reason that makes sense for why he's saying there hasn't been any global warming for the past 15 years. The Palinists obviously Watergate-burglared his office and stole all his data, and the waterboarding has turned him into John Kerry explaining why he was first for global warming and now he's agin it.

Comprende. It is odd but this is the first Olympics that I have felt no interest in, none at all. Not sure why. I think it may be because the whole international rivalry thing seems well gone now. No more cold war and such like. Great athletes for sure, but unless one has an interest in a particular sport I don't see how it rises up to 'compelling' or even interesting.

Q&A: Professor Phil Jones

Phil Jones is director of the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (UEA), which has been at the centre of the row over hacked e-mails.

The BBC's environment analyst Roger Harrabin put questions to Professor Jones, including several gathered from climate sceptics. The questions were put to Professor Jones with the co-operation of UEA's press office.

"B - Do you agree that from 1995 to the present there has been no statistically-significant global warming

Yes, but only just. I also calculated the trend for the period 1995 to 2009. This trend (0.12C per decade) is positive, but not significant at the 95% significance level. The positive trend is quite close to the significance level. Achieving statistical significance in scientific terms is much more likely for longer periods, and much less likely for shorter periods.

C - Do you agree that from January 2002 to the present there has been statistically significant global cooling?

No. This period is even shorter than 1995-2009. The trend this time is negative (-0.12C per decade), but this trend is not statistically significant. "

Heh.

If the Winter Olympics were being held in Baltimore:

Events.

Biathlon with live rats as targets. Rat availability guaranteed because the trash hasn't been collected for two weeks.

Car slalom. Obstacles: cars parked at odd angles into the street, pedestrians walking in street because citizens haven't shoveled their walks.

Cross-city skiing.

Sidewalk luge, on those walks that have been shoveled into narrow tunnels.

Scavenger hunt: find your drug dealer even though the bar he works out of is closed.

Mugger spotting: you can tell them because they're still wearing pants down around their asses and useless but expensive sports shoes. Report their whereabouts to biathletes.

Mayor watch: keep an eye out for former mayor Shiela Dixon, who may be working off some of her community service sentence passing out gift-cards to the homeless. Report whereabouts to bialthletes.

Silly me...

This is very interesting.
Sounds like you are here for the purpose of eliciting downdings from people. In fact, you are inviting them. I only ever see that from trolls or the socks of the banned.

Which are you?

Excellent post.

The short rundown on tomorrow is that Walter has claimed there are problems with the code and will be posting some 23K words about that.
His initial claim was that this would show errors in the results, and CJ has called him on that.
Walter has been walking that claim back.

Expect a tremendous treatise on coding errors, to be rebutted very briefly with "Where are the errors in the results? Where are the errors in the conclusions?"

This is the projected synopsis of the thread to come; there will be many, many sideline objections and arguments made on both sides of the debate, but keep your eye on the ball. ;)

Agreed. Carrot works better than stick. Just look at how fast people will reduce energy to save money. Look at how fast energy saving bulbs took off. As a studio photographer, I am really glad to be free of "hot lights". Makes the work easier and no fire risk.

Compare that enthusiasm to a fiscal conservatives resistance to carbon trading and you get the picture. There are many good reasons, some arguably stronger than the topic at hand now to reduce coal and oil consumption.

I may have to shoot a video on combustion. I just want to melt some platinum or gold with hydrogen on a super cold morning inside. That shows the power of the heat. Then take it outside. I think if I take the torch outside on a cold dry morning I'll get a steam plume, from the byproduct of burning hydrogen and oxygen. Then show an acetylene torch or gasoline powered torch and show the carbon smoke.

Thanks a lot. I'm planning on serving them for my brother Mike's "Welcome home" party. He and his lovely wife have been on their long-delayed honeymoon: travelling for more than a year through South and Central America. Since they've had such great other-America food for so long, we're welcoming back them with United States of America dishes, and lots of 'em.

BTW - I grabbed your recipe; if we can add it to the cookbook, I will (along with a few others that have come my way recently).

You've just got to educate the people till it sticks.

One thing I've learned about educating people on just about any topic is that you have to figure out what their "sticking point" is. I listed a few I've heard in this post. How do we take people with issues like that and teach them correctly? Presenting good science is only part of the solution; correcting their misconceptions is the other part.

What's the opposite of Occam's Razor?

Ockham's Miracle Snake Oil Hair Growth Formula. It warms you if your cold and cools you if you're warm. And it grows hair! It's a floor wax and a desert topping too.

And on the topic of Snake Oil and its purvayers:

Professor Jones also conceded the possibility that the world was warmer in medieval times than now – suggesting global warming may not be a man-made phenomenon.

And he said that for the past 15 years there has been no ‘statistically significant’ warming.

Is the truth beginning to trickle out?

Probably like Missouri during the civil War. I had a grandfather that was sent to a camp for Southern sympathizers in Minnesota territory.

Just seemed like every couple of minutes, someone would yell "You just don't understand how I feel about (state's right, abolition, the Union, Mary, Jenny, Susanna, Beau, Abraham Lincoln, the Dredd Scott case, the Missouri compromise, Mama's dying wishes or Glenn Beck's good name)!" and then they would flounce.

Victorian dresses are good for flouncing in.

The other thing about educating people is that you can only educate someone if they have some sliver of willingness to consider that there may actually be some point or perspective on an issue that they haven't considered. Even a crack in the door is enough but it's always surprising to find not only a massive amount of closed doors, but ones that are literally, proudly and gleefully nailed shut.

It may end up being a generational thing....

How did we end up teaching people that racism is wrong or homophobia is wrong?

We may need to make sure that children get a reasonable breakdown of the global warming issue as they grow up. Teach them the ins and outs, teach them about green house gasses and show them how they worked in a controlled environment...

There's always hope for the next generation down the line to be better than the current one....

The problem is that it is useless to try and convince people we need to find a solution until you've completely convinced them there is a problem...

Not true, IMO.
Rational people are usually prepared to act on a strong balance of probabilities. We all do it every day. If nothing was ever done unless there was absolute certainty, then very little would ever happen.
For example, a statistical probability of 95% is generally enough for most people for most purposes, but 51% might not be sufficient to expect people to make sacrifices.

Hehe well I'd guess that would depend on ones ability to exert personal control and focus. Some of us are sufficiently unbalanced as to make that an extreme challenge. I know I talked about this before, but my daughter is taking a trip this summer to the UK, and they will visit Scotland. She has decided to take an extra excursion where they will learn dancing, and will be able to try HAGGIS.

I am very much looking forward to her haggis report. Actually, it sounds like it is somewhat similar to Louisiana boudin sausage.

Haggis is one of these things that can be awesomely tasty, or why-in-hell-would-anyone-want-this-in-their-mouth awful, depending on where you get it.

I know The World's End pub on Edinburgh's Royal Mile does great haggis and mash; if she's buying one in the supermarket to cook at home I'd recommend "MacSweens" as a reliably good brand.

Muffaletta bread recipe, from NOLA cuisine.

Jambalaya mixes - I prefer the Luzianne brand, and here it is at Amazon.com

Beignets are very easy.
Here's what I do:
1 envelope active dry yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water (approx. 105°)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup evaporated milk
7 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup shortening, softened
oil for deep frying
powdered sugar

Preparation:
In large bowl, sprinkle yeast over the warm water; stir to dissolve and let stand for 5 minutes. Add sugar, salt, beaten eggs, and evaporated milk. Whisk or use electric mixer to blend thoroughly. Add 4 cups of the flour; beat until smooth. Add shortening; gradually blend in remaining flour. Cover with plastic wrap and chill at least 4 hours or overnight. Roll out on floured board to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into 2 1/2 to 3-inch squares. Deep fry at 360° for 2 to 3 minutes until lightly browned on both sides. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle generously with powdered sugar. Serve hot with coffee.
Dough can cut and frozen, separated in container with waxed paper.

Found on the web:

For a time, some parents were having their baby boys circumsized in order to donate the skin. The skin would then be used to help those born without proper eyelids. Using infant skin lessened the chance of rejection of foreign skin. They stopped the practice not long afterward, upon discovering that every recipient became cock-eyed.

Yes, we have a gigantic box just with spices and the like. You can't find anything for Tex-Mex cooking either. Ancho chilies, etc.

I found a great UK site primarily geared toward Asian (i.e., Indian) cooking, but forget about finding anything for mexican cooking in scotland where we are. Even jarred jalapenos was rough.

And the UK loves spicy food. Someone could make a TON of money working in Tex-Mex there. Restaurants and also just merchandising Tex-Mex ingredients.

No, this is some sort of excursion thing they are doing, separate from the tour, but it's associated with the tour folks (EF Tours - educational tours for students). It's combined with some sort of outing where they will watch (and some will learn!) scottish dances.

She'll try it, that I know. I watched a TV program recently where they were making it and actually, the finished product looked quite tasty. Getting to the finished product - now that was a different story.

My girlfriend lives in Hyde Park. The only grocery store is a Treasure Island. It is safe to assume this is where Obama shopped. Right under the store sign, it says in huge neon letters: "America's most Europeon grocery store."

I said to my gf: "Man, if there was a picture of Obama walking out of that place, the right wing blogs and Fox News would have a field day with that." She didn't understand what I meant, but I had a chuckle to myself.

The cultural differences are super interesting. You can find loads of stuff in even a tiny market in scotland (like garam masala) that you can't always easily find in some big US supermarkets. There's a tiny spice shop in town where Jimmah and I can get lots of stuff. We're making our own hummus now and it's no problem to find tamarind paste.

To share with you... a short essay about the first time I experienced the "traveling merchants" in Eastern France.

I was wondering how the populace in these small French hamlets acquired their department store type items. It’s easy. Instead of having a shopping mall every 2 miles, Sears, so to speak, comes to the town.

Once a week travelling merchants set up stalls in the early morning, up and down the ancient streets. They hawk everything from furniture to clothes, housewares to CD’s. No parking lots, no traffic. The sun for lighting, the breeze for air conditioning and the streets for storefronts. And by lunchtime they are packed up, moving out of town leaving nothing but the quiet peace of a small French village.

I couldn't find crushed red pepper flakes. I could find cayenne, but even that took some searching.

Jambalaya recipe.

From a friend who is a good cook.

1 Tbsp Unsalted Butter
1/2 Cup Diced Andouille
The Holy Trinity: 1/2 Cup Diced Onion, 1/2 Cup Diced Bell Pepper and
1/2 Cup Diced Celery
1/2 Cup Diced Fresh Tomatoes
1/2 Cup Tomato Sauce
3/4 Cup Enriched Long Grain Rice
1 1/4 Cup Chicken Stock
1 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
2 Tbsp Minced Fresh Garlic
1/2 Cup Diced Chicken (Cooked)
1 1/2 Cup Medium Shrimp (I use Louisiana)
1 Tbsp Finely Chopped Italian Parsley
3 Tbsp Finely Sliced Green Onions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Mix together the Holy Trinity (Onion, Celery, Bell Pepper).
In a Cast Iron Dutch Oven, melt the butter over medium heat, add the Andouille and cook until it just starts to brown. Add 1/2 of the Holy Trinity, cook until the vegetables are tender (nothing smells better than rendering Andouille with the Holy Trinity).

Add the diced Tomatoes and cook for 1 minute. Add the Tomato Sauce and cook for another minute. Add the Rice and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the Stock, the remaining Holy Trinity, Seasoning Mix, Worcestershire, and the Garlic. Taste the broth for seasoning, particularly salt.

Add the Chicken, stir well and put the pot in the preheated oven. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes.

After the twenty-five minutes stir in the raw Shrimp, Parsley, and Green Onions, place back in the oven for an additional 10 minutes, or until the Shrimp are cooked through. Serve with French Bread and your favorite Beer.

Yep. "Tack-os", are the big thing there. My relatives pack their suitcases with bottles of Taco Bell Hot Sauce (and strangely Briannas salad dressings) and give them as gifts when they go back to London. You could make a fortune importing it in.

Yeah, I was just thinking the shipping would be a killer.

So - THAT'S a business idea!
Friend of mine was in the UK recently, she and her hubby were taking some sort of course at Oxford - she blogged about her trip - said she had a craving for peanut butter and COULD NOT FIND ANY. So there's another item for the list.

Europeans don't eat it. And the only Europeans I know who like it are the niece and nephew of a coworker, who visit from Paris in the summer, and think PBJs are the world's biggest treat.

Still can't buy andouille in Scotland though, at least not where we are. :(

Hey, whenever you're in new york, you might like Two Boots pizza:

Locker and I were talking about it recently. It isn't NY pizza but it kinda rocks. The 'two boots' are Louisiana and Italy-- cajun toppings. Tasso, shrimp, andouille and more.

The poboys are disgusting though. Not LA poboys.

And believe it or not - peanut butter on bananas. You have to try it to appreciate it.

I love bananas and don't much like PB. But I have a good recipe (of sorts) for a banana smoothie with peanut butter. Slice up and freeze the bananas, blend with a little milk, a tablespoon of PB, a little vanilla, some cinnamon.
You won't even taste the bananas, just the milk and PB.

You could make it with nonfat milk or probably yogurt and it might be a way to force some more potassium into the system. It's pretty yummy too; it's more like dessert than breakfast.

Unlike FullRoller, I know you're not a sockpuppet. You should not, however, rely on the Daily Mail on this matter. Its never been a good paper, and its record of reporting on this story is abysmal.

I'm not familiar enough with British newspapers to form an opinion either way.I don't exclusively rely on any newspaper on any matter of importance. They don't report the news, they try to make the news. They don't report to people, they try to manipulate them.

I do know there is a person,Professor Phil Jones.I know what he does for a living. The fact that he now concedes the possibility of a non anthropomorphic global warming in the recent past (on this time scale) , means the truth is about to trickle out.

I admit the other statement "And he said that for the past 15 years there has been no ‘statistically significant’ warming." is misleading to many. It is better then the "hide the decline" (in the rate of growth) BS of the past.

Some of it is tied to a more general denialism and "Party of No" thinking.

Those tricksy libs, and Al Gore, endorse it. Therefore "we're agin it".

This doesn't cover all of it by any means. But with over a decade of Republicans trashing science and blocking it, is it really so surprising? This denial climate (ha) didn't come out of nowhere.

Good evening all!

Late to the thread, watching pairs figure skating with She Who Must Be Obeyed (yes, it's Valentine's day). Here's the phrase that pays, to me:

"After the final batch of emails was stolen on the eve of the COP 15 conference, the hacker then broke into the Real Climate site, disabled access from the real administrators, and tried to post a fake story that climate change was all a myth."

There is no site hated more by coal and oil than Real Climate. That's because of two things.

First, they soberly and with great precision refute each of the denier's claims point by point with peer reviewed data.

Second, they follow the money trail to point the finger at those who fund the deniers and profit from inaction.

There is no doubt that coal and oil, or the people they fund, targeted the CRU and Real Climate.

Oh, and taking second and fourth in Nordic Combined today was kick ass! Also, congrats to the Canada for finally taking a gold on native soil in Men's Moguls! Well done!

Blazing Saddles.

Yes, I'm late on the uptake, I remember that now. Refer to my previous comment anyway.

Bananas, peanut butter, and Miracle Whip. Slice the banana in half and put 2 Tbsp. of the other ingredients in the middle. It's good!

Maybe this has already come up, but I can't say I'm terribly impressed by Mr. Anderson's article. He makes a number of claims without bothering to present any evidence to support them - the break-in must have been financed by American lobbyists because it was expensive (how expensive is it to pull off a hack? It's more a matter of motivation than money) and then goes on to blame foreign governments because of it's "sophistication," without explaining what, exactly entails sophistication and why such an attribute would only be available to governments.

The whole thing seems rather breathless, at best. At worst, we have downright troubling statements like

“It was a sophisticated and expensive operation. In terms of the expense, there is the American lobby system, which is a very likely source of finance. Right now, the American lobbyists are a very likely source of finance for this, so the finger must point to them," he said.

Er...you speculatively raise the possibility that some nebulous American lobbying group was involved, without putting forward anything to support that claim, then quickly leap to the position that "the finger must point to them." Why, exactly? You didn't even bother to make any case at all that they were even involved, other than imagining it, but somehow that is enough to go into a finger-pointing Pod Person shriek?

Ugh. When is this guy going to start passing out torches and pitchforks?

I'd be more than willing to believe that Russia or China had a hand in this, because there's good circumstantial evidence to support it, if not actual primary evidence. Both would benefit from discrediting the CRU, and both have ready access to the expertise necessary to conduct such a hack, with China ahead by quite a lot by a good distance, and with an extensive history of such activities (see "Google"). But those observations and a couple of bucks will get you a cup of overpriced coffee. How about presenting some actual, tangible evidence, instead of gesticulating wildly?

The IT-Networks account is no better, coming to a foregone conclusion despite (to it's credit) presenting the views of many who found no such bogeyman. I had hoped that, perhaps, they had been directly involved in the investigation into the break-in, but no such luck; it's just another blog, sifting through the Internet's stream of never-ending dross, picking out the juicy gobbets that suit the author's predisposition.

Apparently, journalism is dead, at least on the Web. Very disappointing, because it certainly looks like there's a story here, somewhere, were anyone interested in actually pursuing it.

Those aren't the words of Mitchell Anderson. He's quoting Sir David King's speculation, not stating this as a fact. And the evidence does support the speculation.

631 Charles Johnson  Mon, Feb 15, 2010 10:25:27am

And the article at IT-Networks has a further note on Sir King's statement:

That sequence of events led Sir David King, the government’s former chief scientist, to say that it must have been “carried out by a team of skilled professionals, either on behalf of a foreign government or at the behest of anti-climate change lobbyists in the United States”. But he quickly backed away from that statement, admitting he had no inside information.

So I do not agree that this article is biased. They reported the facts accurately.

re: #629 SixDegrees

From the IT-Networks article:

But how would an outside hacker get in? Although UEA has security in place, it has seen a number of accidental security breaches of the UEA system in the recent past. On one occasion a server was configured wrongly, so that anyone outside doing a search would “fall through” to directories of files. (UEA closed that hole after being alerted about it.) A misconfigured server could have left just the hole that a capable hacker with a determination to find the data being denied via FoI requests could have exploited. But they are not government-class skills.

Government-class skills? Who writes the IT-Networks blog? I couldn't find it attributed in the article or on their homepage, but someone commenting about IT networks should know that misconfigured servers seems to be about standard for government-class skills. Or is he trying to imply that China was not involved?

It's not a very good investigative report. It's mainly a bunch of speculation. The writer doesn't seem to even know what OS the UEA servers are running. Unless the UEA admins are incompetents, the hacker would have needed to gain root access to access archived emails.

I guess you really want to hang on to the delusion that this was done by a "whistle blower," even if you have to ignore very clear facts to do it.

Doesn't that also mean we have to prove that the hacker wasn't a robot sent back in time by an evil AI who wants us to be complacent about global warming so that humanity can get all but wiped out by rising flood waters paving the way for the rise of our efficient rust proof machine overlords?

Prove that didn't happen!

I, for one, welcome our new rust proof machine overlords.

It's an absolutely accurate description. This whole ridiculous nonsensical "scandal" is a trumped up mess of nothing, deliberately concocted by the denial industry to discredit the Copenhagen climate summit. It's a completely bogus distraction that tells us nothing at all about the state of climate science.

I think the CRU emails actually help the case of AGW as a valid science. With all of the emails that were leaked there really wasn't anything close to a "smoking gun". The best they could find was someone using the word "trick" - even though it is common among engineers, scientists, mathematicians, and the like. There was no conspiracy unleashed by these emails. No evidence of a huge cover up. Just a couple of points where scientists talk about problems with the data, proof that they don't blindly believe, but instead challenge their own conclusions for due diligence.

I agree, of course, but that's certainly not the spin from the denial noise machine. They jumped on this story like a pack of wolves and they've been howling about it non-stop for months.

re: #636 Charles

I'm not hanging on to any delusions. I have no pre-conceived ideas or theories about this breach. I read the article to learn more about it but was a bit disappointed that an article on a blog named IT-Networks had very few technical details. It mostly speculates about the identity and motives of the hacker. It contains no information about how the hacker actually gained access. It mentions previous security problems due to misconfigured servers, but I doubt this breach was due to that because archived emails would have default file restrictions to prevent that, unless changed by admins.

The comment about "government-class skills" made me lol. Thinking about it, the author probably meant government sponsored blackhats.

The investigation is still ongoing, so I doubt there are many more details available to the public beyond what they published. There's still a lot of new information in this article.
