Arkansas Republicans Getting All Up in That Vagina Again

Should this be under politics or religion?
Politics • Views: 52,019

It’s back! The Republican-mandated invasive transvaginal ultrasound has returned in Arkansas (they never stop trying), where Sen. Jason Rapert (yes! Rapert was his name-o!) is hiding the ultrasound requirement in … yet another “fetal heartbeat” anti-abortion bill: Spread ‘Em, Ladies: Rapert Toughens Anti-Abortion Bill.

The new Rapert bill would prohibit an abortion if a heartbeat is detected, a limitation that moves the potential prohibition in Arkansas law to the 5th week of pregnancy, far beyond the pre-viability protection period that the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld. Viability has generally been considered at the 23rd to 24th week, though anti-abortion legislatures have tried to move that to 20 weeks, a move that is under challenge in court. Such legislation is being offered again in Arkansas and could be considered in committee this week. It’s even meaner in some ways than Rapert’s bill — no exception for rape and incest or mental health of mother.

The new Rapert bill would require a check for heartbeat by “standard medical practice, including the use of medical devices as determined by standard medical practice.” The bill doesn’t spell it out, but at the earliest stage of a pregnancy, this requirement would mean a transvaginal probe. To get an abortion under the Rapert legislation, a woman in the earliest stage of pregnancy (when most abortions are sought and performed) would be forced to submit to a vaginal probe rather than a standard ultrasound passed over the abdomen. And, if five weeks pregnant and a heartbeat was detected, a woman would be told an abortion was illegal.

Abortions to save a mother’s life are excepted as are pregnancies resulting from rape and medical emergencies. But instrumental rape is OK.

It would be a Class D felony for a doctor to perform an abortion after detecting a heartbeat. The woman would not be subject to prosecution.

Yes folks, the modern GOP thinks a woman should have to go through Hell and back to obtain an abortion, but asking a gun buyer to undergo a background check on every gun he wants to purchase is government tyranny.

TARGETED REGULATION OF ABORTION PROVIDERS (TRAP)

The anti-choice movement has undertaken a campaign to impose unnecessary and burdensome regulations on abortion providers – but not other medical professionals – in an obvious attempt to drive doctors out of practice and make abortion care more expensive and difficult to obtain. Such proposals are known as TRAP laws: Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers. Common TRAP regulations include those that restrict where abortion care may be provided. Regulations limiting abortion care to hospitals or other specialized facilities, rather than physicians’ offices, require doctors to obtain medically unnecessary additional licenses, needlessly convert their practices into mini-hospitals at a great expense, or provide abortion services only at hospitals, an impossibility in many parts of the country.

Current State Laws
45 states and the District of Columbia have laws subjecting abortion providers to burdensome restrictions not imposed on other medical professionals: AL, AK, AZ, AR, CA, CO, CT, DE, DC, FL, GA, HI, ID, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MS, MO, NE, NV, NJ, NM, NY, NC, ND, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, WY./blockquote>

In 1972, Kennedy filed tax evasion charges with the Internal Revenue Service against the Catholic Church, saying that their campaign against abortion rights violated the separation of church and state.

On the side of civil rights, Kennedy established the Media Workshop in 1966 to picket and lobby the media over their representation of Black people. She stated that she would lead boycotts of major advertisers if they didn’t feature black people in their ads. She attended all three Black Power conferences and represented H. Rap Brown and the Black Panthers.

Kennedy was known for her flamboyant dress – often in cowboy hats and pink sunglasses – and attitude. Once, to protest the lack of female bathrooms at Harvard, she led a mass urination on the grounds. When asked about this, she said “I’m just a loud-mouthed middle-aged colored lady with a fused spine and three feet of intestines missing and a lot of people think I’m crazy. Maybe you do too, but I never stop to wonder why I’m not like other people. The mystery to me is why more people aren’t like me.” Kennedy was well known for pithy, humorous and highly quotable statements, such as, “If the ass is protecting the system, ass-kicking should be undertaken regardless of the sex, ethnicity, or charm of the ass involved,” and “I know we’re termites. But if all the termites got together, the house would fall down.”[5] In 1974, People magazine wrote that she was “The biggest, loudest and, indisputably, the rudest mouth on the battleground.”

There are some people you just can’t help loving.

Excerpt on the local shooting, fits the Bad Crazy theme:

“The man who is believed to be holed up in the Midland City hostage situation following a shooting on a school bus is Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65, who was scheduled to be in court Wednesday for a bench trial on a menacing charge.
James Edward Davis, Jr., who lives near Dykes on Private Road 1539, said Dykes pulled a gun on him and his daughter on Dec. 10 after Dykes believed Davis had driven in Dykes’ yard. Davis said he reported Dykes to the Dale County Sheriff’s Department. Dykes was arrested Dec. 22 and charged with menacing.
Davis said Dykes has lived at a residence on Private Road 1539 for about a year. He said Dykes constructed a “bunker” behind the residence with a PVC pipe leading to the back end of the residence.
“It’s the craziest thing. He will be outside in his yard digging dirt at 2:30 in the morning,” Davis, Jr. said.
Davis, Jr., said police were evacuating houses near Dykes’ residence Tuesday evening.
The suspect, who has not been identified by law enforcement, is reported to be inside an underground bunker by his home, located near Destiny Church off U.S. 231. It is not clear whether the 6-year-old child taken from the bus after the shooting is in the bunker with him.
The incident began a little before 4 p.m. on Tuesday when the gunman got onto a school bus near Destiny Church.
Michael Creel, a neighbor of the suspected shooter, said he went outside after his sister heard gunshots. He saw children running away from the bus and they pointed in the direction the shooter ran.
Creel said a little girl told him the shooter came onto the bus, demanded two children between the ages of 6 and 8 come with him. The bus driver refused and he shot the driver, the little girl told Creel. The shooter then took off with one of the kids.
Carol Shepard, whose daughter was on the bus at the time, said her daughter told her that a male neighbor who lives by them on Private Road 1539 got onto the school bus, shot the bus driver, and then left with a 6-year-old child.

Tenn. lawmaker: Cut parent’s welfare benefits if child gets poor grades

“Unfortunately we have some families who really don’t care about education, who don’t care if their kids get an education or stay in school, and what we are saying is, if your kid is quitting school, not showing up, showing up at 11 o’clock in his pajamas, that’s not a prepared kid to get an education,” Campfield continued. “We need to do something to motivate these parents to see how important an education is, and unfortunately, the only tool we have left is this cash payment that we make to these families.”

Yeah, because when a kid is having problems at school, making it harder for the family to make ends meet at home is sure to give those kids the boost they need.

Fucking bastards.

There was a shooting up in Vancouver, WA and the Vancouver PD have arrested the shooter, who claims he shot and killed a “prowler”. The story really doesn’t say it explicitly, but I suspect that the “prowler” may not have been inside the accused’s house.

My father always told me that shooting an intruder inside the house is fair game, but not outside the house. And you should only shoot (inside the house) if the intruder is clearly armed and poses an imminent threat.

Things that make me angry:

Men who use an absence of ‘the rules’ to rape and abuse women. Also men who use rape as a weapon.

Sexual violence against female protestors at Cairo’s Tahrir Square appears to be increasing, an activist group devoted to end such assaults said Tuesday.

Operation Anti-Sexual Harassment/Assault said it intervened in 15 of 19 reported sexual assaults on Friday when 10,000 people gathered in the square on the two-year anniversary of the start of the revolution that ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

“These attacks represent a startling escalation of violence against women in Tahrir Square in terms of the number of incidents and the extremity of the violence which took place,” the group said in a news release.

The organization said some of the cases involved life-threatening violence where the attackers used knives or other weapons. It said some of its members also were attacked during rescue attempts.

“This phenomenon requires urgent attention and treatment, and is linked to the broader social problem of endemic and daily sexual harassment and assault of women,” Operation Anti-Sexual Harassment/Assault said.

I’ll have more to say about this later. But I wanted to get this story some exposure.

Okay, everyone, remember how we’re not too terribly concerned about Argentina mounting any sort of attack on the Falklands?

Argentine destroyer that led war against Britain sinks, a symbol of decay for once-proud navy [WaPo]

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Argentina’s defense chief expressed shame Wednesday after a Navy destroyer sank at its moorings, putting on display the declining fortunes of a once-proud fleet.

The ARA Trinidad led Argentina’s 1982 sea war against Britain, but has long been mothballed and used for spare parts to sustain what’s left of Argentina’s Navy.

A Navy statement said that a pipe burst, flooding the ship below decks. Defense Minister Arturo Puricelli denied that cuts to the fleet’s maintenance budget were to blame. He said negligence or “sabotage” were possible and demanded a complete investigation.

We are not concerned about Argentina mounting an attack on the Falklands.

Dear Ironman 1, some facts that may have escaped you;

Some of us Libtards are armed. In fact, more than 3% of us. I like to meat hunt. I’ve got a long rifle for deer. On a nice calm day, my rig can put little 7.62 mm holes in a 2-inch circle at 700 yards. I’ve also got a pump action 12-gauge shotgun for bird hunting, but it can be loaded up with rifled slugs and #2 shot. (Which is the best home protection device ever invented, that #2 shot. Lethal at short range, but it doesn’t kill the neighbors.)

We like the US as it is. We the think the gubmint is often stupid, but that’s the nature of the gubmint under our Constitution. So if you want to start trouble, please come to South Austin to do so. I guarantee you will be unpleasantly surprised at your reception.

We are not concerned about Argentina mounting an attack on the Falklands.

The navy is not alone. The Argentine Air Force, which elicited much admiration for its valiant and sometimes all-too-successful attacks on British forces, reportedly has no more than 20 combat aircraft in operational condition at any one time. These are of the same basic types, Mirage III/Vs and A-4 Skyhawks, that figured in the 1982 war, though the A-4s are much more capable “M” models supplied in the 90s.

I’m not so sure about that. Went back to the beginning, and the first few tweets were from early to mid 2011 and were all retweets, mostly from the Onion. Starts tweeting from the account back in October saying things like this:

Scholar At Conservative Think Tank Basically Tells Other Conservatives To Shut Up About The National Debt

In fact, austerity could just about be the silliest thing to do, if Congress wants the debt-to-GDP ratio to fall:

If fiscal austerity is applied too rapidly, US growth will drop and the debt-to-GDP ratio will rise, boosting the nation’s debt burden. If the Fed tries to stem the rise with too much money printing, inflation could rise and drive up interest rates, exacerbating the US debt burden.

Congress and the president need to avoid excessive austerity with respect to changes in fiscal policy this year. Over the past four years, on average, the fiscal boost applied to the American economy has been worth about 3 percent of GDP. This year, with tax increases and sequestration, fiscal drag will be about 1.5 percent of GDP.

My recollection of the 90’s AR gun ban was that if you bought one before a certain date, it was still perfectly legal to own it.

Where does the Obama “is coming to take all our guns” meme originate? Does it just spring from the same well that’s given us similar anti-Obama rhetorical hysteria regarding birth certificates, Kenya, Islam, terrorism, etc?

re: #201 palomino

Where does the Obama “is coming to take all our guns” meme originate?

It’s pretty simple. The NRA represents the gun manufacturers. True, 4% of gun owners do belong to the NRA as well, but that means 96% of gun owners decided not to join, so the NRA can’t make a legitimate claim to represent all gun owners. Of course they do, but thats just BS. The NRA exists to make sure gun makers are profitable.

Now, guns last a really really long time and their designs don’t really change much over time. I learned that here from the gun pushers who educated me that the AR 15 hasn’t really changed in decades. So making guns is not anything at all like making toasters, or cars, or TV’s. once your customer has guns, he is good.

So, keeping in mind that the mission of the NRA is to keep gun makers profitable and that means cranking out more and more weapons, and that customers don’t need to replace the ones they already have, that means the NRA has to either 1) convince existing customers they need MOAR GUNZ! or 2) convince people who don’t already own guns that they need to go out and buy some.

Thus Wayne LaPierre and his raving speeches that warn people that Uncle Obama is coming to make gun purchases illegal and to confiscate the guns they already have. .

In a pulls-no-punches essay intended to provoke rational discussion, Stephen King sets down his thoughts about gun violence in America. Anger and grief in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School are palpable in this urgent piece of writing, but no less remarkable are King’s keen thoughtfulness and composure as he explores the contours of the gun-control issue and constructs his argument for what can and should be done.

The Milwaukee Journals dreamboat, Paul Ryan

Ryan’s hope: a new, and smarter, Republican Party

Paul Ryan and other Republican leaders are busy scratching out the old image of the Republican Party and rapidly trying to create a new one.

After a disappointing loss in November to President Barack Obama and the Democrats, Ryan, the congressman from Janesville and the GOP’s vice presidential candidate, is emphasizing “prudence.”

In so many words, Ryan is saying: Let’s stop being so dumb.

Or, as Bobby Jindal, the governor of Louisiana, put it so well the other day: “We must stop being the stupid party. It’s time for a new Republican Party that talks like adults.”

We quite agree. For too long, Republicans have talked down to their own voters (something, by the way, that Democrats are sometimes inclined to do as well).

Now, in speeches around the country - and in a meeting with the Editorial Board on Monday - Ryan sketched out a new version of the Republican message that on its face sounds more reasonable.

Believe. In the dream.

That’s so much unvarnished BS right there, the MBF’s gonna throw her back out.

(Establishment) Republicans “talk down” and pander to the TPer/barely-disguised bigot/Bible-thumper base because they know that today’s GOP can’t win elections without them. I don’t really see it from the Democrats, not like that.

The gun nuts are out in force tonight. There’s a major push-back effort against the heckling story — obviously they understand how bad it makes them look.

Sort of touched on this in the previous thread, but what’s becoming apparent is that to a lot of people, guns are clearly more important than children in their world. What make this even more fucked up is that many of these people are actually parents.

To these people, Sandy Hook is a “you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs” type of situation. Sandy Hook is acceptable losses. And for the most part, every discussion around guns gets morphed into “The scary black man wants my personal arsenal.”

I have to agree with many other LGF readers in that these people are spoiling for a fight. They wan their Ruby Ridge, their Bushmaster-powered Shays Rebellion. Egged on by the GOP, Fox News, Limbaugh, and their own pathetic paranoia, it’s a matter of time before these fuckwits provoke a fire fight with some government organization.

We keep going down the path we’re going, these horrible excuses for Americans are going to get more dead children and cops for their twisted little “war” on guns. Hopefully, we can manage to stay out of the crossfire

BTW I believe only 1 of the members of the Milwaukee Journal editorial board actually lives in Milwaukee. James Causey. They are an occupying force from outside of the city. A joke of a paper.

Something that sticks out to me when I look at voting trends is how the Milwaukee suburbs are clearly the most populated concentration of right wing voters in the North. What gives?

I’ve been agonizing for weeks which electric guitar I should get and I’m no closer to picking one than I was when I started. Well here are 3 I’m contemplating.

The Music Man John Petrucci JPX6

The Fender American Deluxe Strat

Les Paul Standard Traditional Pro

My problem, well one of my problems is I’m kind of a loner and I haven’t played many guitars outside of the acoustics I own. And I refuse to buy a guitar not made in America. At least this time.

Damn me and my wishy washy ways!!!

Tonight’s 40k trivia:

Gregor Eisenhorn

Gregor Eisenhorn is an Inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos. Initially a Puritan of the Amalathian faction, Eisenhorn’s Inquisitorial ideology would alter over the course of his career so dramatically towards the philosophy of Radical Xanthism that other members of the Inquisition consider him a possible heretic. Indeed, Eisenhorn has officially been considered a traitor by the Inquisition at least twice in his Inquisitorial career, only to be proved a righteous servant of the Emperor of Mankind both times.

Image: Eisenhorn6.jpg

And his pupil (and later sworn enemy)

Gideon Ravenor

Gideon Ravenor was an Inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos of some renown and one of the Inquisition’s most powerful psykers. During his time as an Interrogator for the Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn he was severely wounded during a terrorist attack on the world of Thracian Primaris. Thanks to the technological marvels of the Adeptus Mechanicus and Ravenor’s own unbending will, he survived his injuries, but due to extensive tissue damage and burns, he was doomed to spend the rest of his days in a life-supporting Force Chair. The sensory deprivation caused by his injuries and the chair’s built-in psy-boosters allowed Ravenor to continue in the Emperor’s service with significantly enhanced psychic abilities. As an Inquisitor he won many great victories that helped to preserve the Imperium and at one point he actually help save the material universe itself from destruction. Ironically, Ravenor gained much greater fame amongst the Imperial elite as a philosopher than he did as a warrior. His esoteric philosophical book, The Spheres of Longing, is generally considered to be his greatest work.

Mostly about the class order of things and the total discount of the “staff” as being relevant to the investigation. No one really cared who committed the murder.

Since genealogy seems to be my hobby of the season, here’s a brief blog article that is worth reading:

You Are Probably Descended from Charlemagne and Other Royalty

The commenters seem a bit confused about things genetic, but that is common.

If your ancestors come from a European nation that kept good records, such as with my Norwegian ancestry, chances are indeed good you can find a way back to the great Kings of old. In my case it’s not too difficult to hit Scandinavian nobility of the 13th-15th centuries, in part because of all the baptismal and land ownership records the Norwegians kept, so I’ve got about a dozen entry points into the ancient past. The landed gentry/nobility tended to marry equally or “up”, so it takes several generations to lose the trail, and if you can follow your ancestry back to the 15th century in Europe the paths get easier.

Once you hit a landed gentry then the rest going back to Charlemagne (or another famous person) is pretty straightforward.

Note that going back before the Carolingian dynasty is rather questionable. For Scandanavian ancestors going before King Gorm is doubtful. In England the House of Wessex is real but descent from them is confusing.

There are many myths that the doubtful/fake genealogy research sites try to sell to people. For example, many people of Scandinavian ancestry try to claim a certain “Princess Hildis of the Vandals”, but she’s a myth. The myth is made so that one can claim her real (and important) father, Hilderic of the Vandals, as an ancestor. Hilderic is indeed important, and if you can find him in your tree, then that means you can find his ancestors, which include the Emperors of Rome, such as Constantine.

So everyone wants to claim “Hildis” - but as near as serious genealogists can tell she was invented by later people of the North, to insert into ancient proto-Viking ancestry.

Similarly, some who find the House of Wessex in their heritage buy the deception that Alfred, King of the Britons, was descended from Joseph of Arimathea. But that most certainly is a made up claim (even if there was a real Joseph of Arimathea as portrayed in the Gospels, which is itself unlikely.)

So, it’s buyer-be-ware out there.

10% is what is considered average. Wow.

I’m not really that cynical about it. It seems that the further back one goes, the more likely one is going to run into errors, as it was easier to make fraudulent claims before modern medicine and record keeping.

re: #274 FemNaziBitch

And those few percent add up to mean that “nearly all people” in assumed descents.

Think about this: some of my royal pedigree goes back to good ol’ Ansegisel. Think of the number of generations between then and now.

Let’s say there are 40 generations between him and me (just as a nice round figure - I’ve not actually counted them.)

Assume each generation has, on average, 4 offspring (by marriage) that live to an old enough age to reproduce (though often it was more, sometimes it was less.)

Without pedigree collapse downstream, that makes 439 descendants! Now that is an impossibly large number of people to live in Europe, so we know there is significant collapse of the pedigree.

Anyway, let’s say there is 10% chance of an NPE per generation that lives to reproduce themselves. If there are N “legitimate” descendants, the genetic total becomes 1.1N .

So, to calculate the ratio of the number of total, versus pedigreed, descendants after G generations is simply 1.1G.

Plug in say 39 for G and you get approximately 41. That means after 39 generations the original parent has 41 times more descendants than what the pedigree would suggest!

Back when we lived in small, nomadic hunter-gatherer tribes, paternity was not such a major issue: all children were raised by the Clan.

Fatherhood only became significant once we settled down and started owning stuff, it became important to determine the rules of inheritance.

And once we slapped a layer of religious dogma and social rituals over the issue, it became a major cultural obsession, which it remains to this day.

Greets and saluts from the exceedingly warm and soon to be quite windy and rainy NYC metro area. Big news here is on the transit front as PATH has finally restored service between WTC and Hoboken. That service has been out since Sandy hit (3 months). To put that into perspective 50,000 people use the WTC terminal daily. Hoboken normally services 30,000 people daily, with roughly half going to WTC.

Having that service cut off affected the commutes of most of those people. For me, I had an increased daily commute of about a half hour. That adds up, and while it didn’t increase my out of pocket costs, there were many other people who did end up with higher commuting costs - taking alternative routes that required higher fares (like the ferry or going through Secaucus to NY Penn and then subways to Lower Manhattan).

Reopening the link is huge for Hoboken as well since it’s still struggling economically with all the damage to local businesses. Getting the rail links back up and running is a huge step towards getting foot traffic going again near the station.

I’ve been comparing these people to the Aztecs recently. Their religion requires human sacrifice or their world dies. Only with blood can the gods be appeased.

A closer look at the numbers reveals a few things.

Sandy is responsible for what looks to be a 0.5 point hit. Without Sandy, the economy would have grown by an anemic 0.4% instead of shrinking 0.1%.

Government spending cuts and slower inventory growth subtracted a total of 2.6 percentage points from growth. Both are volatile. And they offset faster growth in consumer spending, business investment and housing.

In other words, the quest to cut government spending resulted in the contraction - austerity in action. And the economy will continue to see those effects, not from higher taxes, but from reduced spending if and when the sequester takes effect. And the GOP knows this - which is why they’re now screaming about jobs (even though the private sector is doing everything imaginable to keep their costs down by wringing out still more efficiency from their current workforce and not hiring); it’s the reduction in government jobs are why the unemployment rates are still as high as they are.

Yet, any proposal to do any kind of stimulus such as an infrastructure bill will be met with claims of pork and waste, rather than getting it done to fix our crumbling roads, bridges, highways, transit and power and water delivery systems.

You could point them to this…

Vast stretches of the country, especially in the West, are indeed red, but they represent parts of the country with lots of open land, some of dedicated to either Federal Parks or military bases, and very few people. A far more accurate representation would be this map from Mark Newman which adjusts the size of the states based on their relative population:

Last year Michigan’s entire cherry crop was destroyed by unseasonable warm weather which caused early blooming and then freezing when normal weather resumed.

Ontario lost 80-90% of its apple crop for the exact same reason. I was desperately hoping the same thing wouldn’t happen this year, but judging from the January we’ve had thus far - spring-like temperatures approaching 15°C, followed by a week of freezing cold where they were closer to -15°C, and today, once again, rainy, stormy, and back up near the 15°C - it’s not looking good :(

392 lawhawk  Wed, Jan 30, 2013 8:01:01am

Cold, or what approximates winter in NYC has lasted all of about a week. Then we’ve got the warm temps this week, and a cool down to temps that are still at or above normal. This month has seen only a handful of days where temps were normal or below normal.

In NYC 18 days with temps at or above normal - including temps well into the 50s (normal temps are 38/28). Even the low daily temps are running 10 degrees above normal here. The two stints with colder temperatures simply don’t balance things out.

Cherry trees bloomed last week here in Philadelphia in Fairmount Park. And then it got cold again. Now getting warm again with rain coming in (per what Lawhawk said NYC would be getting.) And friends say it is already windy and raining heavily in Pittsburgh.

I have an actual dandelion trying to pop up out of my yard. In January. In NJ.

re: #392 lawhawk

There was a stretch in January in NYC where the daily low temperatures were still higher than the average daily high temperatures for January. I’ve seen some of my plants starting to bud, something that should be happening in March.

That follows last year when the climatologists and USDA has reclassified our area’s growing season to the next warmest zone (From 6b into 7a).

University where Obama spoke instructs in ‘this type of violence’

The curriculum used to instruct young Egyptian students includes permission for them to use Christians and others as lunch, according to a startling report from Walid and Theodore Shoebat, on the website for Walid Shoebat, a former Muslim Brotherhood member who is now a peace activist.

“In the future, the Egyptian Islamists will not only be conducting systematic violence, but cannibalism against Christians and moderates,” they reported, citing a video interview from a man identified as “One Egyptian scholar” that is online.

The teachings are from the curriculum coming from Al-Azhar university, “the most reputable of all Islamic schools,” according to the report that includes video from the Eretz Zen Channel. […]

As you can see from these Google results, the wingnuts are on it. I’m trying to get angry, but I can’t seem to stop LOL long enough to work myself up into a fit of outrage. If you read the whole article you’ll see that they even provide a page number from the supposed Al-Azhar book in question, to make it seem more legit.

FWIW, Sharia covers just about everything, so I’m sure it covers cannibalism too. I know for a fact that we’re allowed to eat pork or any other prohibited thing if and ONLY if we’re in danger of dying of starvation., so I wouldn’t be surprised if cannibalism was also allowed in order to survive as the preservation of life is paramount; dietary rules do not trump it.

I don’t know of any society or religion that would prohibit cannibalism under dire circumstances, but “systematic” cannibalism of Christians & moderates being sanctioned? That’s beyond absurd—it’s a form of blood libel.

As far as I can tell, the “Eretz Zen Channel” is nothing more than some guy’s YouTube channel. From what I gather, he’s Lebanese former military commander-in-chief, Michel Aoun. Based on his name he’s Christian, so that might explain his hostility towards Muslims. As for his military background, who knows? Shoebat claims to have been a former terrorist, which is pure bunk.

Pear trees need ‘chill hours’ to produce. Our two trees had 4 pears last year, and it looks like we’re on the same path (73 degrees right now.)

re: #421 Gus

Not going to argue about using psedonyms online.

But I will argue against the reasoning by those who think that heckling was justified or allowed under the rules in that hearing (CT rules):

HEARING PROCEDURES

Speaking Order: One of the committee’s co-chairpersons will preside over the hearing, setting rules that seem fair for the circumstances and calling speakers from the signup sheets. At many, but not all hearings, the first hour is reserved for legislators and agency heads or invited guests. Remaining speakers are usually called in the order in which their names appear on the signup sheet, although some chairpersons alternate between supporters and opponents of a bill. Chairpersons often ask large groups to appoint a single spokesperson. Some committees hear all testimony on one bill before proceeding to the next, following the agenda printed in the bulletin.

Comings and Goings: Some hearings last for several hours. Legislators may leave and reenter the room if they are scheduled for more than one hearing or meeting. But all testimony is recorded so they can read it later.

Decorum: A hearing is an important step in the process of making law, so it is a formal occasion. Please give your courteous attention to other speakers, regardless of their views. Don’t applaud or indicate pleasure or displeasure with anyone’s remarks.

YOUR TURN AT THE MICROPHONE

When you are called, sit at the speaker’s desk. You may begin with “Madam Chair, Mr. Chairman” (as appropriate) “and members of the committee.” Introduce yourself very distinctly so the transcriber can understand, and mention your town and the number and title of the bill you’ll be speaking on. In addition, most hearings and meetings are covered by Connecticut Network (CT-N) for broadcast over local cable access stations.

Indicate right away whether you support the bill, oppose it, or are offering suggestions to improve it. Then explain your reasoning. Follow this procedure for each bill you discuss.

Keep your remarks short; 3-5 minutes is usually enough, but be sure not to exceed any announced time limits. If other speakers have already made your point, you can say that you agree with, or want to associate yourself with the remarks of one or more previous speakers. Your views and your name will then be clearly on record.

When you finish, remain at the microphone for a moment, in case committee members want to ask questions. Then return to your seat or leave the hearing, as you wish.

It’s making a 911 call indicating a situation where police have to come in heavily armed (sending in the SWAT team) - as in a claimed hostage incident, etc.

It diverts resources and costs significant amount of time and money for the law enforcement agencies.

There are heavy fines and penalties for making false claims in calls, but apparently not strong enough. The people who do this are often sophisticated in using telcom procedures to mask their identities or source of the call.

Happy birthday!

Once-doomed, NY’s Grand Central turns 100 as celebrated landmark

NEW YORK (Reuters) - It made its debut in the heyday of cross-country train travel, faced demolition in the era of the auto, and got a new lease on life with a facelift in its eighth decade.

Now Grand Central Terminal, the doyenne of American train stations, is celebrating its 100th birthday.

Opened on February 2, 1913, when trains were a luxurious means of traveling across America, the iconic New York landmark with its Beaux-Arts facade is an architectural gem, and still one of America’s greatest transportation hubs.

It is also the Big Apple’s second-most-popular tourist attraction, after Times Square.

“We are among the top 10 most-visited sites in the world,” boasted Dan Brucker, manager of Grand Central Tours at Metro-North Railroad, the commuter rail service that operates from Grand Central.

“Every day more than 750,000 people come through Grand Central Terminal - that is the entire population of Alaska that walks through here every day. It is the entire population of the state of North Dakota,” he noted.

Many are commuters who arrive on trains every 58 seconds at the peak of the morning rush, pouring onto the terminal’s dozens of platforms. Tourists gasp at the vaulted ceiling and sprawling 22,000-square-foot marble concourse, which has doubled as a film set for movies such as “The Fisher King” and “The Cotton Club.” And thousands from both groups eat and shop at any of the 103 restaurants and stores.

“There are a lot of beautiful old train stations in this country but none as big, and none as ornate, and none as elevated and well-known as Grand Central,” said Gabrielle Shubert, the director of New York Transit Museum.

That means closing the Hinckley loophole so the records of those adjudicated mentally ill are in the system.”

Morsi: comments about Jews taken out of context

Egypt’s President Mohammed Morsi is defending comments that he made in 2010 referring to Jews as “the descendants of apes and pigs,” saying that they were taken out of context.

Morsi’s criticized remarks came from a mix of speeches he made in 2010 when he was a leading Muslim Brotherhood figure. The remarks were revived when an Egyptian TV show aired them this month to highlight and mock Morsi’s current policies.

Speaking after a meeting Wednesday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who said she brought up the comments in her talks with the Egyptian leader, Morsi said he was “not against the Jewish faith or the Jewish people.”

He says “my comments were about conduct that sheds blood and kills innocent people _ things neither I … nor anyone condones.”

Liar.

Not surprising, but really it’s just probabilities we’re talking about here.

For example, if I make the statement: A man who attended a Lakers game last week died this morning.

Now of course thousands of people go to those games. Say the Lakers play 3 home games in a week. The Staples Center capacity is approximately 20 000, obviously a lot of spectators will go to more than one game, but we can probably say across three games you would have 30 000 unique visitors to the arena.

I’d be willing to bet that if you tracked similarly large populations you’d see deaths pretty regularly.

There were a lot of people who performed at and participated in the Inauguration ceremony and thus it makes statistical sense that one of them would have something bad happen to them soon after.

Heckling the father of a dead child betrays the level of tribalism that, previously, I’d only seen in the middle east and Africa.

The things that saves us from them treating the American army under a Democrat president as a foreign invasion, and attacking it (the way for instance, any Muslim country would react to a non-Muslim army) is:
1) Our ARMY isn’t hated, by these people
2) they have their own children in the Army

I don’t. There’s been a rash of people using it lately to basically just mean ‘partisan’, or to mean ‘fanatical’. We have words for those concepts already.

Tribalism is really the wrong word to use for this. Tribes are small groups of interdependent people sharing a group identity. The key is that they’re actually interedependent; they also tend to have a relatively flat social structure and are cooperative. In short, tribes, and being tribalistic, have a lot of positive attributes to it, and the only perceived negative one is a strong group identification.

Why bastardize a word and erase its much more nuanced meaning just to come up with another word for ‘fanatic’ or ‘partisan’?

If these fuckers actually were tribalistic, at least they’d understand the concept of interdependence.

The statistical likelihood is greater when the deceased lived in the south side of Chicago. The fact that the president who was being inaugurated lived there too made it more likely for someone from there to be performing at the event. The fact that we have a president with those kinds of connections is politically and historically relevant. The fact that the girl was murdered is also politically relevant. That the wingnuts are gloating about her death is evidence of that. Non-wingnuts should be equally concerned, in whatever way is the opposite of gloating, for instance, mourning and demanding actions that will make such murders less of a statistical likelihood.

Anti-Israel MP George Galloway Slapped Down by Prime Minister David Cameron

Devout Israel-hater George Galloway, a member of the UK Parliament, was slapped down quite handily by David Cameron during prime minister’s questions Wednesday.

Galloway asked Cameron to “adumbrate the key differences between the hand-chopping, throat-cutting jihadists fighting the dictatorship in Mali that we are now to help to kill, and the equally bloodthirsty jihadists” in Syria that the UK is aiding.

Without hesitation Cameron responded, “Some things come and go, but there is one thing that is certain: Wherever there is a brutal Arab dictator in the world, he’ll have the support of the honorable gentleman.

OT but have to rant: My workplace had a change of ownership last year and the new owners have been busily scaling back benefits and perks. If you talk to anyone who was there under the old regime, they’ll tell you how much they miss it.

So far most of the changes have ranged anywhere from “tolerable” to “mildly frustrating.”

Then last month they let us all know that, effective the first of the year, they were cutting an ENTIRE WEEK off our usual annual allotment of paid days off.

Care to guess how most of us reacted to that?

Yeah, we’re totally thrilled. //

Of course the higher ups will no doubt keep all their vacation time.

Oh, that sucks!

The company I used to contract with sold to another company. Problem is that the new company has already lost a bunch of the accounts due to poor service (medical transcription), they won’t get back to me on anything I ask them about or with any information that I need to do my job. I’ve got a non-compete clause, but I’m thinking that if they drive off my accounts, then they broke the contract and I’ll be free to freelance on my own with those same accounts. Right now, the only reason they are staying with the company is because of me.

A really small discus.

549 lawhawk  Wed, Jan 30, 2013 9:53:34am

Dr. Jeff Masters: We’re getting an April weather system in January.

An April-like severe weather outbreak accompanied by record warmth and atmospheric moisture continues today over the Southeast U.S., where a powerful cold front is creating severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, and tornadoes over the Southeast. NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center logged four preliminary reports of tornadoes along with 264 reports of damaging winds on Tuesday, and another 71 reports of damaging winds between 7 am and 12 pm EST so far this Wednesday. A powerful tornado hit Adairsville, Georgia at 11:19 am EST this morning, and there are reports of major structural damage in the downtown district, with cars overturned (see eyewitness video here, with swear words.) The spring-like surge of warm air accompanying the severe weather outbreak has broken numerous daily high temperature records. The most notable heat record set Tuesday was the 91°F high in Corpus Christi, Texas, which tied their record for all-time warmest January temperature, set on January 30, 1971. The 62°F measured at Rockford, Illinois on Tuesday was just 1° shy of that city’s all-time January temperature record. Tornado watches are posted for a wide swath of the Southeast today, from Alabama to Virginia, and numerous tornado warnings have been issued this morning. NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has placed most of the Southeast in their “Slight Risk” region for severe weather on Wednesday, a step down from the “Moderate Risk” potential issued on Tuesday for the Midwest.

Oh, and we’re going to be in the thick of it in the NYC metro area this evening.

I just got the most gorgeous new Android tablet in the mail last night (direct from China).

$245, 10 inch (high rez but not as good as the newest ipad) screen, has it’s own combination bluetooth-keyboard-and-stand/screen cover.

OMG the process of hacking into these chinese tablets is flakey though.

To get ADB drivers so I can develop for it, I had to use some weird “phone management software” called moborobo. The software itself doesn’t even work (crashes) but it installs drivers that you can’t seem to get anywhere else. Then I had to get software to read the vendor ID number from the tablet and edit that into adb_usb.ini.

And THEN you can develop for the machine (also and THEN the rooting script works.

whew!

Those two US Senators from Georgia, Chambliss and Isakson, both voted against Sandy aid.

I’m hoping that the storms peter out before causing any more widespread damage, but if not, you can be sure that they’ll be demanding disaster aid before the day is out.

I didn’t do it on purpose, but didn’t care enough to correct it when I saw it was wrong.

It’s funny though, you care about an inadvertent syntactic mistake but not about someone who is demanding that everyone around him get the meaning of a word wrong.

What DOES that mean?

That’s what kills me about teachers here in NJ who support Christie’s union busting plan.

Unions admittedly have their problems. They’re not perfect. But who do these people think are going to have their backs? The public? The state government? Everyone wants the best education for their kids, but they also want it to be free.

What’s happening to you, Dragonfire, is why unions are still a necessity in many cases. At the end of the day, if most companies would get away with slave labor, they’d do it in a heartbeat.
