Police Run Amok in Ferguson While Gov. Jay Nixon Prays, Meets With 4H Club

Missing in action
US News • Views: 26,299

While the SWAT teams were setting up their sniper rifles and putting on their camouflage uniforms and getting ready for a night of tear gas and rubber bullets, Missouri governor Jay Nixon was having a lovely meeting with the St. Louis 4H club.

But that’s not all. He was also doing a lot of praying.

“Like them and all of you I’ve done a lot of praying the last few days,” says Governor Nixon. “We stand together tonight reeling from what feels like an old wound that has been torn open afresh, a would that hadn’t quite healed right in the first place, and now the pain is just as searing as when the injury first occurred.”

UPDATE at 8/13/14 8:55:39 pm by Charles Johnson

Apparently Gov. Nixon has suddenly realized there might be a situation that needs his attention, and as a result he’s canceling his planned trip to the county fair.

Ya think?!
Restraint is not aiming guns at unarmed protesters. Obviously the mindset is to put down the protest rather than endure it.

24 Targetpractice  Aug 13, 2014 8:54:51pm

If gassing peaceful protestors, hitting them with rubber bullets, and arresting reporters is “restraint,” then I’d to know what the fuck the chief thinks would have been “unrestrained.” I get the feeling the answer would be a lot of unarmed people shot dead on live TV.

I remember so vividly watching in 1968-69. I remember the burn of the tear gas in my eyes and lungs in Grant Park, Chicago after a mysterious bottle was thrown turning a protest suddenly “unpeaceful”. The lessons were not “learned” because those involved had no desire to learn them.

We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask!

We Didn’t Know—Tom Paxton—1965

We didn’t know said the congregation,
Singing a hymn in a church of white.
The Press was full of lies about us,
Preacher told us we were right.
The outside agitators came.
They burned some churches and put the blame,
On decent southern people’s names,
To set our colored people aflame.
And maybe some of our boys got hot,
And a couple of n*****s and reds got shot,
They should have stayed where they belong,
And preacher would’ve told us if we’d done wrong.

Animals seem to just want to use the incidents like this as an opportunity to go out & commit more crimes….. I dealt with it for 30 years and can’t see it changing in my lifetime. Anyone that wants to push the ‘race card’ has to be totally blind to not note that race relations have not been this bad in MANY DECADES.
So it would appear that having a “black president” was not a really healing or good idea.
OR one could take note since this asshat has taken office,HE has had very bad relations with the white race !.
He took sides during the Martin / Zimmerman case in Fla.
He took sides during the arrest of a “black professor” against a police officer.
He has taken sides in this incident [ NONE OF HIS BUSINESS ].
And with Sharpton on the scene ,it got worse = add the “new black panthers” to the mix and of course threats to the life of the officer, now we have a real party.
Sad that I was on marches during the 1960’s for the NAACP & CORE [ national assoc. of COLORED people = great name huh ? ] and we accomplished NOTHING.
Unless you call MUCH worse actions from young backs as a improvement ?.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Gov. Nixon (who is a Democrat, to be clear) needs to order in the Missouri State police. The St. Louis County police need to be send away except for those who are investigating Michael Brown’s death. The Ferguson police department needs to be stood down entirely for a month at minimum while its members are evaluated to determine if they can be retrained to do their jobs properly.

Only thing that’s missing is calling them communist operatives.

Some discussion going on about some people in the protestor crowd wearing “Avakian” t-shirts, apparently some members of the RCP (Revolutionary Communist Party) have shown up.

So yeah, some of them ARE communists…which is bad news because the RCP has a history of exploiting things like this to push their own message. They don’t give a damn about the locals input or message as long as they get a chance to distribute their own propaganda.

It’s not the same thing and the police are behaving badly this time around. But that tweet I replied to was saying that “up-armored cops” weren’t at the Bundy Ranch when in fact they were there. Mr. Wright would have been on solid ground if he had noted that those cops at the Bundy Ranch conducted themselves in a professional and essentially decent fashion, which the Ferguson Pd has clearly not done.

After all, the real issue is not body armor but the actions of the man wearing it.

SEATTLE (AP) - Police in Washington state are asking the public to stop tweeting during shootings and manhunts to avoid accidentally telling the bad guys what officers are doing.

The “TweetSmart” campaign began in late July by a coalition of nine agencies, including the Washington state patrol and the Seattle police, and aims to raise awareness about social media’s potential impact on law enforcement.

My money says they’re going to drop the charges tomorrow. There’s basically zero chance of prevailing against him in court, protesting is not a violation of criminal law. This shit happens over and over again, cops make mass arrests at a protest but in the chaos are unable to collect any hard evidence or produce any probable cause to justify those arrests.

Ironically it’s the police resistance to wearing body cams that results in the lack of evidence, and the police brutality that causes the protest in the first place. You can trace everything back to the deliberate lack of accountability.

He was arrested and then they picked the charge. I’m surprised they had the guts to go that far. Look how fast they released the other reporters.

re: #223 Kilroy01

I’ll be it won’t last that long. French will be on the street in the morning the moment the press says “boo”.
But whoever arrested him sure feels good at the moment.

Oh, you know it, just like with Wesley Lowery and Ryan Reilly earlier:

“I hope you’re happy with yourself,” one officer told [Lowery]. And [Lowery] responded: “This story’s going to get out there. It’s going to be on the front page of The Washington Post tomorrow.”

And he said, “Yeah, well, you’re going to be in my jail cell tonight.”

This is not law enforcement, it thuggery and intimidation by the gun.

At one point, the only response you could hear was “Oh shit.” Lawrence didn’t quite know what to do—you could see he didn’t want to cut away in case the young man was in trouble, but you could also see he was afraid of what was coming next.

Yes, I’m employed by CMT. I don’t know how much you know about the show, but we signed a contract. And whatever we do, the cameras are following us. We can’t say, “Don’t share this,” or “Don’t do this.” Cameras actually protect everybody — it’s the reason mostly all cops use them on their dashboards now. The camera protects everybody. We’ll give him a chance to tell his side of the story, if there is a side to that.

I guess what made me think that was the cynical and bombastic death announcement of a particular dictator who put a bullet through his head when the Russians were practically at the door of his bunker.

IIRC, it went something like;

Our Führer, Adolf Hitler, fighting to his last breath against Bolshevism, fell for Germany today at his command bunker in Berlin.

It was something along those lines. In any event, no mention was made of the fact that he’d shot himself.

I could see Strelkov’s buddies doing something similar.

I don’t know whether this has been posted yet — CNN shows a time of 6:40 this morning — but it appears that another witness has emerged in the Michael Brown tragedy:

Witnesses to Michael Brown’s shooting detail his last minutes

While Michael Brown appeared to tussle with an officer before he was shot dead, he didn’t enter the police cruiser as authorities claim he did, two witnesses told CNN.
The women’s accounts corroborate that of a previous witness, all three of whom said the officer fatally shot the unarmed teen.

This story just gets creepier and creepier with every passing hour.

“Unlawful assembly”

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

I’d really like to see the evidence.

One could argue that an NRA Convention/meeting in Missouri would be a Unlawful Assembly. They talk about guns and shit.

I want to comment on the complete lack of leadership of apparently every organization involve here:
The Ferguson police chief? ‘Damn, I didn’t know there were racial tensions in a community of ~21,000 which I’m responsible for policing.’

The St. Louis County Police Chief? ‘We’re not telling you anything about the investigation, so piss off.’

Whoever is in charge of the Missouri State Police? To tell you the truth I don’t think I’ve seen a picture or video of him in this coverage. If they were a professional organization, they should be handling the use-of-force investigation and would have told the Ferguson police to go sit in your police station and try not to fuck anything else up.

The Governor, Jay Nixon? Too busy attending a 4H meeting to make sure the State Police, which are his responsibility, aren’t screwing up more stuff.

WAIT . JUST . A . MINUTE

We have such a thing as “unlawful assembly” in this country??????

I thought that was, like, part of the Constitution or something.

The government can place “responsible” restrictions on protests, such as requiring permits, date and time restrictions, etc.

But, in this case, it’s pretty obviously a “contempt of authority/cop” arrest.

It is against the law to point a weapon at someone except in the case of an imminent threat. Cops are not exempt. Protestors with their hands in the air do not qualify as such a threat. No wonder these fascists wear face masks.

I’ve seen enough, especially the attacks on the press. Nixon needs to sent in state police and national guard, push the local yokels out of town entirely and restore some semblance of the rule of law. If he won’t do that, President Obama needs to take the next step: Federal marshals and federal troops.

OMG!! Feral Girl woke-up feeling healthy, happy and ready to BURN ENERGY! After a bout of tug and jaw wrestling, Brat Puppy sought asylum in his crate. She wasn’t having any of it.

Finally, I decided to grab one of those industrial tug toys and go outside with her. WE worked on JUMP, TAKE, GIVE AND KILL. Meaning, I made her jump for the toy a couple of times before I threw it. She ran after it, shook it (to break it’s neck) and then brought it to me. Rinse. Repeat.

WE came inside for water (on leaseh) and went directly back out side for more work.

3 more rounds and she decided to lay flat in the grass and chew a while.

More water and some serious business (the kind dogs are supposed to do outside) and she is again inside. Brat Puppy is in the crate and the FO has taken over. She showing normal overtired toddler behaviors.

I think it’s morning nap time (crate induced)

It’s amazing what a couple weeks of good nutrition, a loving home and a lack of parasites can do for the mind and body of a pup.

How much money to you keep in your car?!

A survey of 3,567 drivers by a website that goes by the sleek name couponcodespro.com says Americans keep a total of $2.4 billion in their cars. That’s an average of $21.48 per car.
Eighty-eight percent of those who responded said they did keep cash in their vehicle. And in case you are one of those people who break into cars, you’d do best looking in the glove compartment because that’s where 47 percent stash their cash. The ashtray is second at 23 percent, while 8 percent just throw the money on the floor.
Money is easy come, easy go in California, where owners leave an average of $43.11 in their cars, while in New York thieves would have to order off the dollar menus with the paltry $3.66 motorists leave lying around.

I keep less than a dollar (and out of sight), my wife, a couple hundred, in pennies, dimes and nickels. She then gets mad at me for swiping it any chance I get.

I keep nothing of any value in the car —dog crate, dog travel stuff —bottle of water, poop bags, plastic drinking bowl, cheap extra leash.

If anyone wants to steal my various charging cords, they are welcome. They can also have the owner’s manual.

I don’t even carry cash in my purse. I lock my door when the window is down. I look under my car as I approach it with my keys threaded thru my fingers. I look in the back seat before I get in.

People have the right to protest and to assemble
People DO NOT have a right to riot & loot

Is that the same thing the British soldiers in Boston said before they opened fire on March 5, 1770?

Just got caught up on the Ferguson situation. My God, what a fuck up. Absolutely horrible.

Again, this needs to be pointed out again and again:

1) It becomes more apparent everyday that the Ferguson PD is trying to cover up one of their own murdering a 17 year old black kid by threatening an entire city, the majority of whom are black.

2) To anyone who thinks racism is dead or on the wane in America, two words for you: Bundy Ranch. A group of white men aim assault weapons at government agents who are doing their job, among other things, and are basically left off the hook.

Black people using their Constitutional rights to protest a cop slaughtering a kid get sniper rifles pointed at them.

I also look at the situation in Ferguson and realize it could happen anywhere. I live fairly close to Camden, NJ and Philly, towns that have both high crime rates and police forces who are known for fucking with minorities often because they can.

If the cop who most like murdered Mike Brown gets away scott free (a likely scenario in the US), it’s a real possibility that we’re going to see a repeat of 1968; maybe worse.

And quite frankly, while I don’t condone that level of violence, I can’t blame anyone for feeling that angry and disenfranchised.

I’ve probably been living closer to a few powder kegs than I realize.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Parts of the area are finally drying out after the rainfall of historic proportions yesterday. Islip LI and several nearby areas got more rainfall in a 24 hour than any other place in NYS. Ever. More than seen by upstate during Hurricane Irene. More than during Floyd or any number of major storms, including the Long Island Express of 1938. Now imagine nearly all of that rainfall coming in a 2 hour period.

Weather I can deal with.

What I can’t deal with is the fact that the right wing echo chamber is busy smearing Michael Brown and making unsubstantiated claims about his acts prior to being shot and killed by a Ferguson cop. Or their blaming the community for riots while ignoring the heavy handed tactics by both Ferguson PD and the St. Louis County police departments.

Overnight, the county police trotted out their armored vehicles, and put their LRAD sonic devices to crowd control use. Mind you, these vehicles were intended to give local police the ability to respond to terror attacks, to school shootings and mass casualty events. But they’re using them, along with cops in body armor that are busy pointing loaded weapons at civil and peaceful demonstrators. These same cops have harassed journalists (arresting and detaining two yesterday without charges or an apology), and even arrested @AntonioFrench.

As he walked out of the Ferguson Jail this morning, French wore his signature oxford shirt and talked with reporters about his experience. He said he was near the burned-out QuikTrip at about 9 p.m. Wednesday when police in riot gear ordered protesters to disperse.

“Police had just given a final warning to disperse and released smoke bombs, people scattered and ran,” French said. “Police started to move forward with riot gear and tear gas started to come.”

“I moved away when it looked like they were throwing what I thought was tear gas … it turned out to be smoke bombs,” French added. “I realized the best place (to be was in my) car with the windows rolled up. That’s where I was.”

When a reporter asked French today how he went from being in his car to being arrested, he said: “They open your door and drag you out.”

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

These cops are intent upon causing a scene, but don’t want cameras to capture any of their actions. They’ve sought to limit coverage by the media from the air with a NOTAM that has dubious merit, and have gone out of their way to target people with phones/cameras because it would show just how heavy-handed the response has been.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has a mess on his hands, and he’s doing the bare minimum to get the police to stand down in a town with two officer involved shootings in as many weeks; the first involving Michael Brown and the circumstances of which are dubious at best, and the second appears to have been justified (with police recovering a firearm at the scene, and the suspect may have been involved in a shooting just minutes earlier).

French, who has been covering the protests on the ground since they began, notes that the situation and tensions have been ratcheted up since the police have added more SWAT teams and brought in the heavy gear. Instead of reducing tensions, the county police are courting even more violence.

Moreover, French is right to note that the right to protest doesn’t end at 9:00pm. Purposefully attacking peaceful protesters with smoke bombs, pepper balls, etc., who are forced to disperse before the imposed 9:00 deadline actually precipitates conflict.

Meanwhile, the ACLU and STL Post Dispatch have both sought the name of the officer via FOIA requests, and have been rebuffed. Next stop would be court. Balancing the risk versus the sunshine of identifying the officer would go a long way to reducing tensions in the community, which sees hiding the identity of the officer as part of the department’s coverup of events. I get that some in the department and the public think that this increases risks to the officer and his family, but the department could take steps to protect the officer (like shifting a car or two of cops from “riot” patrol to protecting the family. But the Department should see benefits outweighing the risks - instead it sees only the risk, and in doing so, it causes more grief for itself and the community.

Gov. Nixon has finally gotten off his ass and said something:

Aug. 14, 2014

Statement from Governor Nixon on events in Ferguson

Jefferson City, MO — Gov. Jay Nixon tonight issued the following statement on events in Ferguson, Missouri:

“The worsening situation in Ferguson is deeply troubling, and does not represent who we are as Missourians or as Americans. While we all respect the solemn responsibility of our law enforcement officers to protect the public, we must also safeguard the rights of Missourians to peaceably assemble and the rights of the press to report on matters of public concern.

“I have been closely monitoring the situation and will continue to be in communication with local leaders, and I will be in north St. Louis County tomorrow. As Governor, I am committed to ensuring the pain of last weekend’s tragedy does not continue to be compounded by this ongoing crisis. Once again, I ask that members of the community demonstrate patience and calm while the investigation continues, and I urge law enforcement agencies to keep the peace and respect the rights of residents and the press during this difficult time.”

So basically, Nixon is useless. He’s just offering the expected mealy-mouthed bullshit about being concerned and that ‘s going to take a look around, but no concrete actions or solutions.

Pathetic.

438 ObserverArt  Aug 14, 2014 6:35:10am

I’m starting to see some criticism of President Obama in how he is being too quiet about Ferguson. I figured this would be coming.

I think he is in a tough spot due to the backlash he took over Trayvon Martin, not doing anything in Chicago, how he has handled the immigration/border enforcement, and how he is helping folks in the Middle East and not here.

This issue will cause everyone to attack him, no matter the political sides. Also, I expect him to get grief from African American too. This is a raw sore and the country is bleeding all over.

I know one thing. I would not want his job right now, no way no how. I feel for him.

His party affiliation does mean something, if only because many here are always quick to point out that a Republican who screws up is a Republican. Well, on this occasion its a Democrat who has blown the call, and think its important to make that clear.

You DO understand that Southern Democrats are more conservative and can often be indistinguishable from Republicans, right? Listen to some of the Texas Democrats sometime. Some of them are only Democrats because their districts are blue/purple.

Nixon is a failure no matter what party he’s in. I don’t care what letter is after his name.

Joe Scarborough has an opinion, you guys. He even felt compelled to share:

Scarborough: Reporters Detained In Ferguson Just ‘Want To Get On TV’ (VIDEO)

Wesley Lowery, who was one of the reporters that got arrested, was not amused:

“Well, I would invite Joe Scarborough to come down to Ferguson and get out of 30 Rock where he’s sitting and sipping his Starbucks smugly,” Lowery said during a Thursday morning appearance on CNN. “I invite him to come and talk to the residents of Ferguson, where I’ve been since Monday afternoon having tear gas shot at me, having rubber bullets shot at me … I would invite Joe Scarborough down here to do some reporting on the ground, then maybe we can have an educated conversation about what’s happening here.”

The cops went into a McDonalds, where the reporters were. And they frogmarched them out - even though they did nothing - because the cops wanted to close the store (how and why this was necessary, is not known).

A Washington Post reporter and another journalist were arrested by police earlier in the day by officers who ordered everyone out of a McDonald’s restaurant, an arrest the newspaper’s executive editor called illegal and unjustified. Wesley Lowery said he was slammed into a soda machine and arrested after recording officers. Also arrested was Huffington Post reporter Ryan Reilly.

These weren’t reporters trying to get the store about themselves, but rather reporters who were arrested because they were trying to do their jobs and the police didn’t want their acts to be seen or recorded for posterity.

That’s the reason for the NOTAM. It’s why they’re targeting people with cameras and smartphones. They don’t want the world to see what they’re up to, which is no good.

IRS doesn’t harass people for sake of harassment. Nor does it have the personnel or ability to go after everyone who cheats on their taxes. Asking a taxpayer for more information isn’t harassment. It’s their job to administer the tax code.

I’m no fan of Al Sharpton, but he’s not the one who’s trotting out up-armed riot police that have more gear at their disposal than many military units from just a few years ago. Sharpton isn’t the one who shot an unarmed black man.

Sharpton isn’t the one intimidating a community with a brazen show of arms.

Ted Cruz Defends Reporters Arrested In Ferguson

He defends the reporters but he’s still a weasel about Mike Brown’s murder:

“Together, we should all mourn the loss of life in Ferguson, Missouri and work to keep our communities safe and free. Police officers risk their lives every day to keep us safe, and any time a young man loses his life in a confrontation with law enforcement, it is tragic,” he said.

“Civil liberties must be protected, but violence is not the answer. Once the unrest is brought to an end, we should examine carefully what happened to ensure that justice is served,” Cruz concluded.

Here’s a simple summary, Ted — a cop murdered an unarmed black kid in the street. The cops have been in cover-up mode ever since and have now moved to open suppression of the residents of Ferguson and to arresting reporters. That’s what happened.

Ferguson PD is still appropriate for crowd control; it was the county police that turned things into a fiasco with their heavy handed tactics. Yes, the Ferguson PD is under a microscope for their handling of the Brown case to date, but they need to be part of the solution too (and reform of the agency is a must). They need to see what their own actions have wrought.

Hiding behind the county cops that are armored and armed to the teeth isn’t how to change a culture within the departments at the heart of the crisis in Ferguson. They mayor and police chief must be a whole lot more open about what’s going on, and must reveal the name of the officer involved. There’s no good reason to shield the officer from further scrutiny.

And in fact, the events following Brown’s death highlight problems with the county police force as well. It’s an agency that looks to be spoiling for a fight - and to use all the gear given to them over the years through DHS grants in the name of counter-terrorism, but which is now being used to intimidate and silence the black community by a predominantly white police force.

Racism is still alive and well.

I’m sure TCOT will get a Kickstarter going to help out:

KKK raising money for ‘hero’ Ferguson cop who shot ‘Jewish controlled black thug’

“We are setting up a reward/fund for the police officer who shot this thug,” said an email from the Klan group. “He is a hero! We need more white cops who are anti-Zog and willing to put Jewish controlled black thugs in their place. Most cops are cowards and do nothing while 90 percent of interracial crime is black (and non-white) on white.”

On other subjects.

I started reading Shirer’s _Rise and Fall of the Third Reich_. Partially due to a Lizard recommending it.

And I just finished Beevor’s _D-Day: The Battle for Normandy_. The latter is a decent one volume coverage from the invasion through the liberation of Paris published in 2009 and thus relatively recent in terms of scholarship. If want more detailed coverage of the various events during that period there are books out there concentrating on subjects such as the individual beaches during the initial landings, the paratroop drops, Operation Fortitude, etc.

And Chat Noir is currently in the cat hospital. Vet was alarmed by some of the numbers from his blood test and thus had him brought in for some additional tests and a night or two on IV fluids. Kidney toxin levels primarily, so tests are to see if there is any permanent damage, or signs of an infection, kidney stones, etc. Initial report is no sign of kidney stones or infection. Nothing life-threatening, but he might end up on a special diet at a fairly early age.

OK, thanks. So the counties have generally been the ones to get all the new military toys but not the city police so much?

In this instance, it was the county police who got the grants from DHS for the armored vehicles that have been prominently featured in various photos of the protests and police in body armor looming over protesters.

I’d have to research further to see how much gear went to local police; since these were grants, agencies that had more resources were able to apply and get funds more easily than smaller departments.

The question isn’t just whether all this gear was necessary, but whether the departments had the rules of engagement and policies in place to use them in appropriate situations. But since they have them, County Police decided to use them, since their only other appearances so far have been in parades (they are garage queens otherwise).

Ummm… pulled in to a police car by an overzealous officer through the driver’s side window (in a department that already has a pretty bad history of race relations and disproportionately stops blacks)? Or purposefully going for the gun? Which makes more sense, given what we know of Brown so far? The former.

How can we know for sure what happened? Do the forensics, interview all witnesses, and investigate fully.

What’s Hoft doing? Making unsupported assertions that are based on a police chief protecting his own and shielding his department from further scrutiny when sunlight is needed.

re: #583 Lidane

Yeah, all while ignoring that local residents of Ferguson are volunteering to clean up the market, and to fix the damage done.

On the fourth morning after Michael Brown’s death, residents from different parts of the region came together in Ferguson, trying to pick up the pieces.

Some were young, some old. The majority arrived as part of the faithful. Others trickled in after spotting volunteers marching up and down West Florissant under the hot sun. Carrying brooms and large garbage bags, they collected whatever they could find: rubber bullets, broken glass, liquor bottles, tear gas grenades.

“I needed to come out today just to get some stability,” said Gary Park, 34, an auto mechanic who lives near the area in Ferguson where Brown was shot and protests erupted. Close by is the looted and burned QuikTrip that sits as a symbol of the severity of the unrest that has resulted from an unnamed cop fatally shooting an unarmed 18-year-old.

“I wanted some encouragement,” Park said.

Park is a member of Passage Community Church in Florissant, which together with a few other local congregations, organized the Wednesday morning cleanup. Pastor Joe Costephens said that although the trash-collecting effort was a last-minute plan, more than 100 people joined the endeavor.

It was a simple act but not an insignificant one, especially since authorities had reported two shootings only the night before. In fact, the continued violence has put any future volunteer efforts on hold, Costephens said.

Good for Gov. Nixon to do this; much of the turmoil in the community is directly linked to how the county police have operated, and Nixon should go further by opening investigations in to how the county police operate; the tactics used in Ferguson highlight significant problems that are likely the tip of a huge iceberg.

The county police are throwing their considerable weight around with gear that they got from DHS grants, and it’s like they want to use it by ratcheting up the fear factor and intimidating a local community already shocked by the death of Michael Brown.

Found this little nugget on St Louis from 2012.

• The famous Dred Scott case was first filed in St. Louis. The United States Supreme Court eventually rejected Scott’s bid for freedom and declared that African Americans could not claim citizenship in the US.
• Former slave William Wells Brown: “Though slavery is thought, by some, to be mild in Missouri, when compared with the cotton, sugar and rice growing states, yet no part of our slave-holding country is more noted for the barbarity of its inhabitants than St. Louis.”
• The East St. Louis race riots of 1917, in which “white mobs formed and rampaged through downtown, beating all African Americans who were found. The mobs also stopped trolleys and streetcars, pulling black passengers out and beating them on the streets and sidewalks.”
• This story from CharlieL: “I was just shopping when two teenage male African Americans walked behind me and one said to the other ‘I hate chinks.’”
• The Manhattan Institute has deemed St. Louis one of the most segregated cities in America.

Police Brutality? Yes.

The St. Louis County Police Department will no longer be involved in the policing Ferguson, Missouri, the suburban community rocked by protests after the death of an unarmed black teenager who was shot by a police officer last week.

Rep. Lacy Clay (D-Mo.), who represents Ferguson, told Bloomberg on Thursday that Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon (D) is expected to announce the decision later today.

“The gov. just called me and he’s on his way to St. Louis now to announce he’s taking St. Louis County police out of the situation,”
he said.

658 lawhawk  Aug 14, 2014 9:21:53am

That’s a local reporter getting intimidated by police running amok last night.

This is what the county police, Ferguson PD, and law enforcement in Ferguson have been up to in the days since a Ferguson officer shot and killed Michael Brown. This intimidation of journalists is an outrage and deserves its own special investigation on its own right. Those involved must be accountable for their actions as well.

659 Skip Intro  Aug 14, 2014 9:22:21am

I believe, with no evidence whatsoever, that what we’re seeing is the direct consequence of the Feds non-action in the battle of Bundy Ranch. A total Fed surrender at the time, with no further action against the terrorists, and now a full blown police riot under the control of a RWNJ mayor and police chief, again with no Federal action.

Keep letting these assholes get away with this, and there will be another civil war in this country. Half the country is just lusting for it.

And here we have opinion from the neo facist contingent at ABC.com:

WorkingMan > Th3Acadia • an hour ago
A few things:

1) That ‘boy’ looks like at least 200 lbs and I have seen pictures of him throwing up gang signs. Hardly the image of an innocent cherub on his way to Sunday Bible class.

2) The facts aren’t out. The investigation (local, state AND federal) is ongoing. No one knows for sure what happened. On one hand you have friends (bias?) and likely criminals painting this as how you say it went down, and on the other side, you have cops saying the opposite.

3) The thugs ARE rioting and attacking innocent bystanders. They are looting innocent businesses in the area. They are shooting at helicopters (cop and news). They are throwing molotov cocktails at the riot cops. They are standing on the hoods and roofs of cars and destroying public property. The Clive Bundy people did none of these things.

4) These scum did the same thing in NOLA (where I’m from)…they shot at National Guard helis at the Superdome. This incident is believable because of the facts on the ground and because of past behavior.

Sorry if you have an axe to grind about the cops, I don’t like them much either—I think they protect criminals too much—but at the very least the facts aren’t out yet, and until they are, these buffoons are acting like just that…buffoons. Violent, dangerous buffoons.

I believe, with no evidence whatsoever, that what we’re seeing is the direct consequence of the Feds non-action in the battle of Bundy Ranch. A total Fed surrender at the time, with no further action against the terrorists, and now a full blown police riot under the control of of a RWNJ mayor and police chief, again with no Federal action.

Keep letting these assholes get away with this, and there will be another civil war in this country. Half the country is just lusting for it.

Could be something to it. Just a few years ago, police departments were very conscious of bringing the feds down on their heads if they tried stuff like this. Now they openly thumb their arrogant noses at the Constitution, with no apparent fear of federal action.

In a way, Obama is not the President to deal with it. Remember how that half of the country went apeshit when he made a minor criticism of a shitty Boston cop who arrested a Harvard black prof in his own home for being annoyed at police investigating his entering his house?

BTW, the cop who did that got a standing ovation at a LE national event later that year.

Anything the POTUS does to remedy this in a tangible fashion will almost certainly backfire, and he knows it. His own skin color works against him …even in the Oval Office.

Ferguson PD is a cesspool. Their comments from the top and bottom just reek of privilege and racism.

The Mayor was on CNN and his demeanor was “eh, whadd’ya gonna do?” It’s clear they don’t give a damn about Mike Brown OR the citizens of Ferguson.

I don’t agree at all.

This is the result of long standing police policy. And it’ a RACIST policy, that has fed a “us vs. them” mentality that has spiraled outward.

You don’t get this level of fucking up in just a handful of months.

681 Lidane  Aug 14, 2014 9:41:31am

I’m so tempted to Godwin this, but I’ll let Mat Staver speak for himself:

Mat Staver: Refusing To Oppose Gay Marriage Like Keeping Silent About The Holocaust

Mat Staver, the head of Liberty Counsel and dean of the Liberty University School of Law, criticized Republican politicians who have been largely mum as a string of federal court rulings have knocked down bans same-sex marriage, including one affecting Liberty University’s home state of Virginia.

He likened such politicians, and those who support marriage equality, to those who were silent in Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. Staver told Radio America host Greg Corombos yesterday that officials who don’t speak out against marriage equality will be harshly judged.

Well, after Bundy even drove away Sean Hannity with his comments, we found out that it was.

Ferguson Mayor Defends Police Dept.: ‘Can’t Second Guess These Officers’

Yeah, actually you CAN second guess them, especially when they’re treating Ferguson like a goddamn war zone.

Checks and balances of power, how does that work? Or is Ferguson a fiefdom or kingship or something?

684 Skip Intro  Aug 14, 2014 9:44:18am

Congressman John Lewis just called for POTUS to declare martial law in Ferguson and bring in the National Guard.

Two more from Shirer: The Nightmare Years1930-1940 from a reporter who saw it all happen first hand, and Berlin Diary, a first hand, as it was happening, account.

The History Channel (when it’s in the mood to actually show history programs) has a 2 part series “Third Reich - The Rise” and The Fall. They are really compelling.

Here’s what I’m wondering. You remove the county police from the situation to defuse it….what’s to stop them from returning and starting shit up again later?

In an ideal world, there will be inquiries and investigations into their practices. In real life, though , it will be just as you asked.

re: #630 Ryan King

Yesterday was a plethora of right wing radio downplaying Ferguson and false equivalences such as ‘a white kid got shot by police here, why no media?’

Another common narrative is ‘this is all the media’s fault, it’s not the big a deal just the media getting us worked up over nothing.’

I was driving or I literally would have thrown a desk.

Many white people, especially conservatives, are exceptionally ignorant and downright heartless to this crap. That’s why it continues.

Maybe you should become a secret agent and then *drive* a desk in order to simplify things. And be able to throw a desk while driving as well.
