Rossiya-24 has been “off the air” for an hour. This needs clarification: I assume “off the air”, meaning not on the listed satellite feed.

The text on the color bars is not in Cyrillic. It might be from the satellite provider’s master control. This could happen if Rossiya-24’s uplink MC is down because of a problem like a power failure, or down for “other reasons”. There are many ways to disrupt a broadcast plant, especially if you work there at a high level…

The worst I ever experienced was from chicken I ate at a hotel in Oregon. (Not mentioning the name or city because it was like 14 years ago). I was up vomiting and the other end too every 45 minutes like clock work for 11 hours.

After the first few times all I could think was “where did all this come from? I just got off a plane and I had 1 meal all day and it wasn’t this much.”

Someone on twitter brought up the possibility of Anonymous or other hackers bringing it down. We do know that Anonymous supposedly joined the war against Putin. I guess it’s a matter of waiting to see whether this is just some minor blip. What would be best is if it signaled the overthrow of Putin and his replacement with someone who cares about the future and will work with us to stop this war in Ukraine and stop the killing, but probably no such luck.

My worst was on a band trip, where we performed and were fed by a local mothers’ group. Bad news. I suspect potato salad.

We took a friend to a local restaurant, and split a pizza. The friend ordered a supreme side, and could not eat it all, so my husband ate a slice and she took a slice home to her Dalmatian. I just ate the sausage and mushroom half, and my husband ate most of that. Our friend ended up in the hospital for a week; my husband was pretty sick for several days, and the Dalmatian got sick. We figured it was black olives that had been hanging around too long. Boy, was I glad I stuck with old tried and true!

My tax returns got rejected because the IRS is confused about my AGI from last year. I know what it is, and Turbotax knows what it is, but the IRS doesn’t seem to.

I tried to see what they think it is, but after about an hour of struggling with getting their ID site to recognize me, it became obvious that it was never going to work.

My printer refuses to print in black and white because it’s out of black photo ink, despite having plenty of regular black ink, so I won’t be printing them to mail either.

My depression tells me to just go renegade and not worry about pain in the ass government bullshit, but that probably leads to wearing horns at the next attack on DC, so I’ll deal with this tomorrow.

Isn’t there another option besides AGI? I remember having a problem with that number years ago when I filed an amended return the previous year. I may be wrong about this but I think the IRS may have wanted the original AGI, rather than the number from the amended return. I don’t know if anything like that applies to your situation.

re: #27 Punish Domestic Terrorists

Sorry to hear about the joys of filing with the IRS.

There was a WashPost article on a glitch where if the 2020 return was filed as paper and is one of the millions not yet processed, the electronic 2021 return will be rejected on the basis of 2020 AGI.

As of March 25, the IRS said it had 7.2 million unprocessed individual returns.

When you file electronically, one of the verification questions asks for your adjusted gross income, or AGI, from your most recent tax return.

If your return is in that backlog unprocessed, the IRS system doesn’t recognize your legit AGI. This can cause your e-file to be rejected.

*snip*

Here’s the fix: Enter $0 (zero dollars) for your prior-year AGI, the IRS says.

article:

irs.gov

What to do if your tax return from 2020 is still being processed. People whose tax returns from 2020 have not yet been processed can still file their 2021 tax returns. For anyone in this group filing electronically, here’s a critical point: taxpayers need their Adjusted Gross Income, or AGI, from their most recent tax return when they file electronically. For those waiting on their 2020 tax return to be processed, make sure you enter $0 (zero dollars) for last year’s AGI on the 2021 tax return.

The strategy outlined below may be Russia’s dream and plan. But I suspect that Ukraine, drawing on the West for arms, expertise and ideas, is going to find a number of very successful counter-strategies. Sadly, there will likely be a lot of damage and destruction in the process.

(By the way, I was not surprised to find out a couple of days ago that the British SAS was embedded with a Ukrainian battalion in the Kyiv area. Left unsaid, was that it was probably there during the very successful Ukrainian guerilla operations that defeated the Russian attacks on Kyiv.)

Certainly, the Russians are very unlikely to out-produce the West. And most likely will lose such a manufacturing competition.

That and they have to have the shells to fire. Oddly to date the weight of Russian artillery hasn’t been that heavy. The Russian army has been pretty lean as of late and I wonder is someone saved (stole) money by not building enough shells to replace the stocks they have fired over the last decade.

Fascinating @JaneMayerNYer story on new conservative dark-money group set up with explicit purpose of preventing the approval of all Biden Administration nominees.

It is infuriating that the MSM has been failing to report on this obstruction — this malicious effort to undermine the administration. But that is what McConnell was doing to Obama when he had control of the Senate — preventing any judicial nominees from being approved. The future of this nation is grim as long as the GOP survives and has any power in Washington.

One problem for Russian military
planners could be that they have no way of knowing whether stated inventories of ammunition, fuel, spare parts etc. actually exist. The stuff could easily have been diverted to export, or the civilian market in the case of rations, fuel and medical supplies, with the proceeds pocketed by oligarchs and their stooges. It might explain a lot.

My belief all along is that Putin does not care how many Russians may die, how depleted his own military may become. He’s on a mission (perhaps he thinks from god?)

So Putin will simply keep firing whatever he has at Ukraine until the concept of Ukraine no longer exists. In his mind, anyway.

The Russian army has been pretty lean as of late and I wonder is someone saved (stole) money by not building enough shells to replace the stocks they have fired over the last decade.

Likelihood: high.

How’s the ship?? Trip so far?

(Today will be the second full day of the cruise.)

Ship is nice, seems to have a full passenger and crew complement (they have a wing of it held for possible covid cases). I’m not being quite as cautious as I was the last time, but I’m still masking most of the time, and I’m not eating in crowds.

For the most part, it’s like any other cruise. I go for the sea and the relaxation, not the entertainment.

My skin starts crawling just thinking about this tick season.

Now there’s a new reason to fear tick bites. It’s a potentially deadly allergy that starts with the dreaded insects. Once people are exposed, they can be stuck with a horrific food allergy for years or life.

Disease-bearing ticks lurk in grasses and wooded areas across most of the US and tick-borne diseases are on the rise according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as spring warmth brings out the ticks.

“I looked like a monster when I went in there,” said Brenda Thomas of her first visit to the emergency room for the allergy. “The hives were on my scalp, they were in my ears, in between my fingers. It was the worst allergic reaction I’ve ever, ever had. But, we had no idea at the time what it was.”

Thomas suffered allergic reactions and endured ER visits for a year and a half before she finally found an allergy specialist who discovered she developed an allergy to meat from a lone star tick bite. A blood test confirmed Thomas suffered from Alpha-gal syndrome.

Yes, the transatlantics in spring and fall are (also) repositioning, although they’ve gotten popular enough that they include port calls (Azores and along the west coast of Europe on the way to Southampton in this case).

If you can spare the time, the transpacific is the ultimate relaxation, though. During part of it you are cut off from everything (satellite coverage in the empty parts of the Pacific is often nonexistent). Sydney is also a very pleasant place.

I have been following this sad story all weekend. They handcuffed her 13 year old son before releasing him. Sad sad stuff.

Surveillance footage taken near the home of a murdered Queens mother captured an unidentified person dragging a bloody hockey bag with what cops describe as the woman’s butchered remains inside.

Orsolya Gaal, 51, was found dead inside the bag at 8.11am on Saturday. The bag was found less than a mile away on the sidewalk next to a busy highway.

No one has been arrested for her death.

Police questioned her 13-year-old son but he was released without charge.

Her equities advisor husband, Howard Klein, and other son were out of town visiting colleges at the time of her murder.

Police believe Orsolya went out for the night on Saturday, possibly with a man, then returned home.

She was killed inside the basement of her home then was dragged out in the bag, they say. Unnamed sources told PIX11 News that she had told her son she was going out with friends but was in fact with another man.

It’s not even about the GPA. Most colleges will grant 6 credits (2 classes worth) for each AP exam passed with a sufficiently high grade. 3 AP classes could be worth a semester in college. That’s real dollar and time savings.

As soon as I saw he filed for bankruptcy, I immediately assumed that was why. After being forced to be deposed in that one case, he knew his ship was sinking, so he is trying to pre-empt the system. I wish there was a way to block this, but the bankruptcy court will undoubtedly let this play out in his favor.

I’m not ready to give up on America yet, and neither are a lot of other people. If Ukrainians can fight fascism while their people are literally being raped and murdered, I would hope we can stand up to a bunch of sleazy politicians and lawyers.

I’m not talking about revolting against a lawful election. I’m talking about revolting against an attempt to end lawful elections. If the GOP tries to reject the voters’ will and impose Trump on us, we cannot allow that to stand. If Trump somehow wins based on the actual votes cast, he wins, but we don’t give up on democracy, just like we didn’t give up after he won in 2016.

If the voters elect people who wish to end democracy, then you are revolting against an election.

Democracies are pretty much the only political system where you can legally abolish the political system.

The Trump supporters I know would happily support fascism, especially if it meant keeping people of color in their place. Never forget that if the vote were restricted to whites, Trump would have won in a landslide. This country is still poisoned by the racism that infected us from the beginning.

But our Constitution permits the candidate who wins 65% of the vote to lose the election; just remember even though Biden won the popular vote by 7 million votes, the change of fewer than 80,000 votes would have resulted in a Trump victory. Gerrymandering and voter suppression, as well as the inherent design of the Senate and the Electoral College, can lead to a permanent small minority controlling everything forever.

I would ask you to pay attention to the fact that we succeeded in stopping the GOP attempt to gerrymander itself into a permanent majority in this redistricting cycle and the maps are much more favorable to Democrats than anyone expected they would be. Now the GOP is favored to win control of Congress because that’s just how midterm elections go, but we are still far from the point that white nationalists have achieved permanent control of America, as illustrated by the fact that the Democrats won control of Congress and the White House less than two years ago. We still aren’t Russia, not by a long shot.

The GOP literally had to nominate a pedophile for the Democrat to achieve a narrow victory, then he lost to a blithering idiot in the next election because the GOP managed to nominate someone who wasn’t a child molester. When giving, we should pick our candidates wisely in Red states. I’ll donate to the Democratic nominee challenging Rand Paul because I live in Kentucky, but I don’t have any illusions as to his chances, and I would encourage out-of-state Democrats to donate to candidates who have a better chance of victory.

Yeah, but Greene may even be more toxic than ex-judge pedo. Plus, she’s a woman; that’ll prevent a certain number of GOPers from voting for her.

Far-right Nevada school board candidate claims the Constitution mandates people procreate — so gayness is unconstitutional

The school board wars continue as the far-right seeks to take over schools to restrict content involving people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals and others to whom they object.

Such was the case with Nevada candidate John Carlo, who was filmed speaking at a church saying that the U.S. Constitution demands Americans procreate. He explained that because homosexuals can’t give birth that they are unconstitutional. He did not address whether heterosexual couples who are unable to have children are also “unconstitutional” under his definition.

“I believe the Constitution. I believe in our — our — the way our founding fathers believed in this country: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” he said, mistaking the Constitution for the Declaration of Independence. “That means that homosexuals cannot procreate. This goes against our Constitution and this goes against what parents want in the school district, and this is only one book out of thousands.”

His complaint was about a book in a school library that he said made homosexuality acceptable.

as you all may or may not know, I’ve been training for next month’s Keys100 50k ultramarathon.

And I wrote that the entire family has come down to visit us and dangermom/grandma for two weeks.

Brother and SIL and niece #2 from Philly.
Niece #1 from Israel.
Sister from North Carolina.
So we’re having an absolute ball (even the pineapple pizza incident.)

Nieces used to run with me in the past. Niece 1 ran a lot when she was in the Israeli army. Niece 2 ran track in school for a while but it really wasn’t for her.

Both now independent adults with jobs, they asked to run with me this last week. We’ve been having a great time on my shorter runs. They’ve both been able to jump in and manage 3 miles at a fair pace. They get honorable mentions for helping me train. But they don’t get hats. The race day crew gets hats:

Niece 1 wanted to know what was going on here at LGF. I think to keep an eye on my posts (of which there hasn’t been a pond post for months…)

Anyway, she registered this morning as Superspy, but probably isn’t on right now.

She is her own woman and is ready to explain her position on all things pizza.
And I told her to be prepared with snacks.

Dummy up if she asks where the beach is.

Many Christians argue that’s to keep government out of churches, but not churches out of law.

It’s born out of the “America was founded as a Christian country” narrative that they’ve been building for several generations now. The whole idea is that the Founders wrote the Constitution with Christianity explicitly in mind as a favored class, because they were all Christians. We all know that isn’t true, but that’s the framework the Christian Nationalists have in mind when they talk about the First Amendment. Basically reads as, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, except for ours, because we’re right.”

They seem to think that the Constitution and all the other governing documents* are like the Bible and that they can cherry pick something to say what they want it to while ignoring everything else and any possible context. And, of course, if they cannot find an explicit quote to use they can make something up since the base never fact checks anyways.

* - Except for the Federalist Papers since that Hamilton guy is sus.

Per Elie Mystal’s book:

The “free exercise thereof” did all of the constitutional work protecting the freedom of religion, at least until the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment. I would argue that America has been pretty lax when it comes to preventing the “establishment” of religion by the government. There are laws and customs throughout our system that are inextricably tied to Christian theology: in a fully secular nation the Monday after the Super Bowl would be a federal holiday, but December 25th would be just “a day.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a challenge from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Maryland to the 2017 tax law that capped federal tax deductions for state and local taxes.

The lawsuit had previously been dismissed by lower courts. It argued that the Republican-led tax law, signed by then-President Donald Trump, unfairly singled out high-tax states in which Democrats predominate.

The law caps a deduction for state and local taxes, known as SALT, at $10,000. The lawsuit claimed that lawmakers crafted the provision to target Democratic states, interfering with the states’ constitutionally granted taxing authority.

The only month where there has not been a measurable snowfall in the State of Minnesota is July.

In fact, on this day in history, 9 years ago, we got a massive snowstorm that left 4” of snow actually on the ground, but easily double that amount fell (due to the ground being warm and melting much of the early fall). Former Republican National Committee faith outreach director Chad Connelly announced Monday that using conservative pastors to mobilize Christian voter turnout was such a success in Virginia last year that his group is expanding its “American Restoration Tour” to 16 states for this year’s midterm elections.

Connelly runs an organization called Faith Wins, the purpose of which is “to maximize and activate the Christian vote and influence at every level in the public arena.” He made the announcement about this year’s project on the Truth & Liberty Coalition’s livestream program, which he also used to launch last year’s campaign.

Connelly bragged about the impact his work had on helping place Republican Glenn Youngkin in the Virginia governor’s office in 2021, saying that over the course of the year, his organization held “a couple hundred meetings” in the state and managed to get “312 churches [to] register 77,000 new voters.” On top of that, Connelly said they also trained and “recruited over 1,300 people to be poll watchers.”

“We trained pastors to get Sunday School classes to go to their county election commission,” Connelly said. “It was beautiful, y’all.”

The phrase “such as” is likely playing a big deceptive role here and they don’t want to openly talk about the whole list of ways those publishers are infiltrating children’s education.

I seem to remember a movie scene, maybe a Woodie Allen one, where everybody dies during a dinner. The protagonist then encounters ‘Death’ standing there and asks what happened. Death silently points to a dish on the table.

Seven white business owners are arrested. One is excused for being gay, another is found to be an Iranian immigrant. I only count two forks!

Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff have triggered a political backlash after serving wine produced in a West Bank settlement at their Passover Seder Friday.

A bottle at the veep’s residence appeared to bear a label from the Psagot Winery, which made headlines when it named one of its wines after then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the Times of Israel reported.

The winery tipped its glass to the former top US diplomat, who visited the West Bank after he declared that the Trump administration would no longer deem Israeli settlements there as violating international law.

“Tonight, @VP and I were honored to celebrate Passover with our hardworking staff by holding a Seder at the Vice President’s Residence,” Emhoff said in a tweet, which appeared to show the Psagot bottle.

“Whether you’re celebrating with your family, your work family, or the family you have chosen, we wish you all a Happy Passover!” he added.

During his stop, Pompeo wrote in the Psagot visitors’ book that “it is a blessing to be here in Judea and Samaria,” using the Hebrew names for the West Bank area.

He Could’ve Taken Down the Trump Org. Now He’s Taking the Blame. (Daily Beast)

Jeffrey McConney had a front-row seat for the untaxed perks that he and other Trump Organization executives received. He took an immunity deal, and then tried to take the blame.

He is taking the blame for Trump Organisation CFO Alan Weiselberg, claiming as a decades-long accountant he “did not know” that things such as luxury apartments and tuition payments for private schools are tax-deductible.

A quirk in New York law says that if you admit to a crime in front of a grand jury, you cannot be charged for that crime. Thus, Mr. McConney (now known as the person named as “Individual-1”) can’t be charged for tax evasion. The point is to get Mr. Weiselberg off the hook by taking the blame himself. He was the principal witness against Mr. Weiselberg.

this sentence doesnt make sense

that things such as luxury apartments and tuition payments for private schools are tax-deductible.

they are includible in income to the recipient as compensation

what you cant do is deduct them at the corporate level and not include them in compensation

further, even if this absurdity (“i didnt know”) is true, his boss - the CFO, and the other guy who, you know, signed the tax returns BOTH certainly knew and should have caught it in any one of the dozens and dozens of years that passed

you can take the blame in front of a grand jury but you cant lie to do it

The Herman Cain Award: the prize no one wants to get and creators want to destroy (“The Endless Thread” podcast from WBUR, Boston, 37:06)

In the podcast, one of the people featured was a person who was nominated for the award, but survived. It is quite illuminating how quickly he becomes angry at questions, then storms out of the programme.

He also starts his arguments with “As a Christian… .”

r/TheHermanCainAward [sic: it is r/HermanCainAward] is a subreddit which boasts more than 500,000 members. Its purpose? To “award” those who’ve died from coronavirus complications after publicly expressing COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, misinformation, or pandemic-denying memes online.

Herman Cain, former businessman, politician and Republican candidate for president, is the inspiration behind the subreddit, who died in 2020 after contracting COVID-19. Before he died, Cain had made statements downplaying the pandemic and refused preventative measures such as mask-wearing.

Today’s episode is a deep dive into The Herman Cain Award subreddit. We meet a moderator and a Cain Award nominee. But we find these two people on opposite sides of the COVID vaccine debate may have more in common than they realize.

In the fall of 2021, members of the U.S. Congress and hundreds of Western journalists obtained access to a collection of internal Facebook documents. The trove of research reports, proposals, presentations, and employee conversations would form the foundation for dozens of news stories describing Facebook’s own awareness of the real-world harms that resulted from its relentless pursuit of its users’ attention.

Whistleblower Frances Haugen—a former member of the Civic Integrity team at the company now called Meta—shared the cache of more than 1,300 documents that would come to be known collectively as the Facebook Papers. She would go on to testify before Congress as to their implications. Lawmakers would grill Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri about them as well.

In November 2021, Gizmodo partnered with a group of independent experts to review, redact, and publish the Facebook Papers. This committee serves to advise and monitor our work and facilitate the responsible disclosure of the greatest number of documents in the public interest possible. We believe in the value of open access to these materials. Our collective goal is to minimize any potential harms that could result from the disclosure of certain methods by which Meta tackles sensitive issues like sex trafficking, disinformation, and voter manipulation. The documents, which have not previously been published, additionally contain both personal and private details about low-level Facebook employees and many of the users included in the company’s studies and internal discussions. The risks associated with publishing this information outweighs the value of disclosure.

If it’s not the other one, then it means someone used one of their SSNs to file fraudulently. What a mess. It all could have been avoided if I had filed early. Goddamnit. I get myself into so much trouble sometimes due to procrastination.

Every woman I know has had this conversation with men in their lives. Since March 2020, more and more men have traded stocks every day. They’ll buy one tech stock and sell the next based on advice from Reddit. Even worse, many are piling their future retirement money into bitcoin or the one thing more speculative than bitcoin: sketchy new cryptocurrencies pumped (and later dumped) by influencers, celebrities, and even porn stars. When women try to talk sense into men, we all hear the same reply: “Go do your research!”

I’ve done my research, and I’ve found that people who invest in speculative manias lose their shirts. Everyone from the Securities and Exchange Commission to researchers in Taiwan see that most day traders lose money. Most professional traders lose money, too. Between 2011 and 2021, the S&P 500 index fund outperformed “top” hedge funds. The average joe should put their investment funds in a Roth IRA or IRA invested in diversified index funds and ETFs. Under no circumstances should anyone invest their entire retirement in a new cryptocurrency promoted by an Instagram model or obnoxious tech CEO.

When I sent this actual research to my male friends, they were uninterested and told me I was behind the times. Men are basically pussy-blind to cryptocurrencies. So, I decided to teach them a lesson or two with my actual pussy.

Apropos of last night’s discussion…

I seem to remember a movie scene, maybe a Woodie Allen one, where everybody dies during a dinner. The protagonist then encounters ‘Death’ standing there and asks what happened. Death silently points to a dish on the table.

Aha! Which explains this post by the Esteemed “Dread Pirate Ron”

It is not great news. This is Jones hiding from the judgement against him. He’s not broke.

re: #402 darthstar

Bankruptcy protection…his personal assets should be impounded as well.

re: #403 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

He’s trying to hide his money. Never get between a libertarian and his money.

This is only a first step. I would be very surprised indeed if plaintiffs’ attorneys have not anticipated it and devised a counter move. Damages have not been decided but legal costs alone were enough to bankrupt Jones’s company and only personal assets will be available for his defense in the future.

re: #319 No Malarkey!

Yes!

I had been meaning to mention that the last approved list of US aid to Ukraine had the exact equivalent of the equipment for one US Army battalion of towed howitzers. It had 18 howitzers, target acquisition radars , artillery ammunition, and humvees. Not mentioned, but I suspect supplied were all the additional equipment like radios, fire direction equipment, spare parts, etc.

While the howitzers were not specified and could have been either M109 paladin or m198 towed, the m109 as a mechanized vehicle, would have required a lot more maintenance training. And it was highly unlikely that the US would have supplied 155mm howitzer ammunition with 105mm howitzers.

It also seemed likely to me that supplying a single battalion was not the plan. That instead, the intent was to use it to train up the Ukrainians. Doing so out of the combat theater would also allow the US to perform any of the higher level maintenance on the howitzers or other equipment. The Ukrainians already have humvees and so probably can maintain those as long as they have the spare parts.

One additional thought… Pulling soldiers out of combat to train and reorganize them likely means that Ukraine has sufficient manpower available right now.

Slovakia was trying to interest the Ukrainians in the 152mm Dana or 155mm Zuzana howitzers. But I suspect that they did not have enough of them available to fill out Ukraine’s immediate needs.

As I have mentioned earlier, there is a lot of money for the defense industry here. And both Germany and France being late out the gate is going to peeve off some very big national corporations.

This may be why Russia is starting their attack on Donbas - they want to try and gain the advantage before Ukraine has guns in place that out-range theirs.

And the US Howitzers have a range of around 22 miles whereas the Russian ones only have about 15 miles.

Where the fuck would you find CRT in math books? I know a few people have said the “=” sign as a goof, but WTF.

I wonder if the math texts were excluded due to Common Core concepts rather than CRT.

So I decided to “tan” my testicles in order to become as manly as Tucker Carlson.

The results were amazing. After only 2 sessions, the spouse announced she wanted tacos.

Can’t wait to tell Tucker.
