Breaking: Gaza Invasion Begins

Middle East | Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 10:46:50 am PST

The IDF is moving in... that’s the official word, now on the cable news networks.

This day was inevitable, ever since Israel’s withdrawal. Now the IDF are going to have to retake territory that’s been heavily armed and booby-trapped, in a densely packed urban environment.

Good Hunting to the IDF's.

6 Jetpilot1101  Sat, Jan 3, 2009 10:48:58am

The idiot reporter on FNC just said he spent a lot of time with Hamas and they have a whole lot of IED's ready for the IDF. Time for a swift kick in the gonads for him.

7 Sizzlack  Sat, Jan 3, 2009 10:48:59am

It almost makes me think...

'And the IDF receives the handoff, they're at the 40...the 30...the 20...the 10'

yeah...we're at about the 10 now

8 itellu3times  Sat, Jan 3, 2009 10:49:16am

I guess this is the Obama invasion. I still cannot figure the point, other than as a test and demonstration that they've learned some lessons since Lebanon. And now we will see if they have. My prayers go with them.

9 Ayatollah Ghilmeini  Sat, Jan 3, 2009 10:49:27am

This is going to be the end of Hamas

10 Joo-LiZ  Sat, Jan 3, 2009 10:49:28am

Go get 'em, IDF.

Stay safe, but do the job!

Don't give in to international pressure, you are doing the right thing, for Israel, for the Palestinians, and for the world at large.

I don't want any talk of ceasing fire this time. Lebanon should be a good lesson that you don't make any gains by being nice in this neighborhood.

Attacking Hamas from the sea and meeting the "main" force would be a nice change ...

Israel has Amphibious capability and could use them for selective strikes. But it would make no sense to wage a large scale amphibious assault. Amphibious assaults are by nature inherently more dangerous. Israel's problem is not the initial assault, but finding and killing the enemy in an urban environment were the enemy is hiding amongst the populace.

Just prior to twilight dates back hundreds of years... why armies stand to just before dawn (much to the chagrin of privates everywhere).

Doing it right after it becomes pitch black requires intensive training and some really fancy equipment. For example, the Germans in WW2 (plenty experienced and well trained) were loath to fight at night.

The Israelis tried turning Gaza over to the Palestinians in exchange for international agreements. That failed.

Time to re-occupy the territory, and arrest or kill the Hamas operatives. I'd suggest negotiating with Egypt or Jordan to grant citizenship to Gaza residents, permitting them to depart for Egypt or Jordan.

Will it work? Only if Egypt or Jordan agree.

Urban warfare sucks. Especially when (like the U.S.) the soldiers on the ground are taking such extraordinary measures to not harm innocents.

I wish people understood how easy it would be for Israel to absolutely destroy Hamas and their followers if they truly didn't care about causing unnecessary death and destruction. I wish people understood how much restraint is being shown by the IDF and the US Armed Forces in not bringing the full weight of our weaponry to bear.

Prayer for the Welfare of Soldiers in the Israel Defense Forces

May He who blessed our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, bless the soldiers
of the Israel Defense Forces who keep guard over our country and cities of
our Lord from the border with Lebanon to the Egyptian desert and from the
Mediterranean Sea to the approach to the Arava, be they on land, air or sea.

May the Almighty deliver us our enemies who arise against us, may the Holy
One, blessed be He, preserve them and save them from all sorrow and peril,
from danger and ill.

May He send blessing and success in all their endeavors, may He deliver to
them those who hate us and crown them with salvation and victory, so that
the saying may be fulfilled through them, "For the Lord, your God, who walks
with you and to fight your enemies for you and to save you", and let us say,
Amen.

Yes, for 5 minutes. Then the video will be flagged by the terrorist-supporting robots, and subsequently removed.

Return fire gives away your position. Right now I expect that the Mohammedan terrorists are hunkering down trying to stay close enough to their human shields to stay alive until Israel is forced to withdraw because of "world opinion". The Palestinians are winning the propaganda war. It remains to be seen if that will be sufficient for them to win the larger war.

And now local news are reporting that Olmert has said in a closed meeting with cabinet members that the goal of the ground incursion is to get rid of hamas entirely... I hope and pray that an occupation isn't necessary. A good firm sweeping is what the place needs, but I don't think it would do much good to stick around and try to take care of these folks afterward.

IDF and the political leadership are, if anything, too sensitive to the needs of the civilians in the area of operations though, so I suppose that might be on the agenda after all.

Still, I'll say this for any moonbats out there - with IDF in charge and on the ground, Gaza will be a damned sight cleaner, safer, and better served than when Hamas were running the place. We can expect to see working electricity, infrastructure upgrades, and a sharp decline in the petty thuggery that typified Hamas rule.

May the L-rd bless and keep the IDF and those they protect.

With the Palestinians the way they are now, how is "helping" the Palestinians significantly different than losing the war? The Palestinians in Hamasistan voted Hamas in. By now, any Palestinians that don't support Hamas have either fled or been killed by Hamas. There may be a few holdouts somewhere in Gaza, but they are the real tiny minority. They aren't going to be able to effect how Hamasistan is ran.

Don't expect any massacre reports because Gaza is going to be very cut off. Israel my cut communication to prevent cell phones detonating bombs or being used to target troops.

So far, everything is going on schedule and to plan- Hamas is going down. They started a war and Israel was looking for an excuse to wipe them form the map. Whoops.

The key differentiators this time around are Israeli political dynamics and the different military personalities involved.

It is too hard to tell if Hamas' unit cohesion has been affected by the air and artillery. The less fighting, the more it will be seen they broke and ran.

Moral of the story: don't mess with one of the best equipped and trained military machines in the world today. Corollary message: proving the business case for your elimination by actions that render you unfit to exist as a neighbor may make good Jihad but makes for certain war, see moral of story.

May the Almighty cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighters from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.

May He lead our enemies under our soldiers' sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is the Lord your God, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.

Now let us respond: Amen.

The Hebrew version is there, also.

re: #250 Abu Boo Boo

I suspect Obama will not be willing to risk his domestic agenda over Israel. So he may just continue to lay low.

But I also have no illusions about where his sympathies lay. To the extent he gets involved, he will give a boost to the IslamoNazis.

That's why its crucial for Israel to complete the main objectives before Jan. 20th. After that, it's going to be like Dhimmi Carter's second term.

It's going to be Jimmy Carter 2 in more ways then one. The light at the end of the tunnel is someone else being sworn in as president in 2012. Obama will last a term at the most.

No, that's not an honor I claim. The men and women on the front lines, doing the right thing, actually making life better for the rest of us by slugging it out with Hamas and dragging Hamas' hostages/constituents (the same thing, really - like with any cult) kicking and screaming into the 19th century, or sending them down to Hell, those are Israelis. What is ironic about all of this is that if Israel was able to do what it really wants to do in Gaza and the West Bank, it would be much more beneficial to the Palis than anything Hamas or Fatah or (insert stupid-ass terrorist group here) has to offer. The Palis are being screwed over and over again by their own "leaders"......But, when all you have in your heart is hatred, it's kinda hard to see past that.

Normally, I'm good at it, but I'm having real trouble with this one. It's related to this thread - -Gaza protests in SF.

If you know how to extract the video (i.e. download to hard drive) from this page, either tell me how to do it, or do it yourself and send it to me!

It can be done if you have RealPlayer. Right-click on the bottom "window bar" and select "Download to RealPlayer" at the bottom of the menu which pops up. It'll bring it down to your machine.

You're right, but you're forgetting one point.
The IDF soldiers' families and general public would not be too happy having them policing and protecting, while risking their lives, the same people that were just not long ago supporting and perhaps aiding in the attacks against Israeli civilians and troops.

Well, of course. Ideally, one could just burn the whole place to the ground, wall it off, and send the locals back to Egypt and Jordan, where they came from.

Sadly, though, IDF and the leadership are too humane for that. Anything less than that would be only a short-term fix, of course, but since it's not on the table, an occupation may become necessary.

For those not in the know: easiest way to tell the good from the bad:

You say: "Oh, you're Iranian?"

They say: "No, we're Persian."

Good guys.

You say: "Oh, you're Persian?"

They say: "No, we're Iranian."

Probably not good guys.

When I bought my destop comp, my sales guy at Best Buy had an interesting accent. I asked where he was from - he said he was Persian. When I said Iran, he said nope - Persian. Exactly what you are talking about. His dad had gone back to Iran, but he said no thanks - staying in the USA. Real cute guy - not that I noticed that or anything....

I think part of the problem is that even the MFMSM are being impacted by the economy. Right now, all they care about is keeping their jobs because they are seeing the waning of their industry. They don't give a crap about the Palestinians or doctoring photos especially since they all know that the doctored photos were easily identifiable. If I was the head of a news desk that needed to fire someone, I'd fire people who embarrass the company first. These cowards in the media are only concerned with themselves. They only like the Palestinian cause when it benefits them. In this time of global economic meltdown, this story doesn't benefit them and hence there won't be the same kind of coverage as there was in the Lebanon war.

Feel free to list Hamas leaders and let them know what their names are!

Now that would be a repetitive list!

Muhammed Mohammed al-Mohummad
Mohammed Muhammed al-Mohummad
Mohummad Muhammed al-Mohammed
. . .

The country of Palestine does not technically exist in the first place

It exists just like the country of Appalachia exists. Or the nation of Midwest exists.

As most of us know, the Palestinian people weren't invented until 1967.

Hamas "strategy": Kidnap Israeli soldiers.

Yeah... give 'em a state!

If there is one thing I truly hope for in this whole thing, it is that no IDF get captured.

Believe me when I say, a quick death is better than what will most likely happen to any captured soldiers.

Absolutely the most horrific thing that I saw during my time in combat was the videos showing the torture and slow death of prisoners. Truly evil stuff.

re: #343 yma o hyd

Just going after the report from one Beeb reporter in Gaza City, who again peddled the lie that everybody is starving in Gaza, disregarding the tons of stuff sent in by israel in the last few days, I am beginning to think that ordianry people might perhaps realise how they've been used, and how Hamas has stolen the food from their mouths.

Which then makes me think that there could well be an uprising against the hamasthugs by the ordinary Palestinians.

hmm, possible, though one needs to recall this was going on well before hamas took power, suicide bombing, weapon smuggling, all under the rule of the "moderate" fatah regime and with their encouragement.

"The IDF spokesperson just said again that Israel does not aim to occupy Gaza again."
And now the security minister has said in a televised broadcast that we're going into a "very long engagement"
I'm just wondering what the middle ground is for these two statements.
