Bad News in Egypt.

The Death Toll has risen to 74, and it is believed it will rise farther, as 200 are critically injured in the hospital.

Also, all Association Football games have been postponed until further notice.

OT but interesting stuff.

Satellites and the internet haven't taken over the telecommunications world completely, at least not quite. I've been researching one of the radio world's longest running mysteries, the intriguing phenomenon known as Numbers Stations.
These are clandestine shortwave stations that broadcast what appear to be coded signals. They have been logged by amateur radio enthusiasts since just after World War 2 and continue to operate to this day. It is now generally conceded that they are involved in espionage.
Numbers Stations at Wikipedia
Many of the stations have nicknames, usually derived from characteristic introductions or apparent call-signs. The Cuban station "Atencion!" is called that because it always begins its otherwise cryptic broadcasts with that word. The British (probably SIS) station known as the "Lincolnshire Poacher" always plays a British folk song by that title to introduce its broadcasts. "Cherry Ripe" uses several bars from that song and is apparently located in Australia. One of the more interesting aspects of this is that some of these stations have not changed their characteristic formats in decades.

Shortwave transmitters are difficult to locate, at least for amateurs, but several have been tracked down. The Lincolnshire Poacher transmits from the grounds of the RAF base at Akrotiri Cyprus. One US station is located near Tangier in Morrocco and others are located in Florida and near Warrenton VA. Mossad stations broadcast from Israel itself, of course, and sometimes from distant locations, possibly including South Africa or even ships at sea. Speculation that these are run by drug traders or terrorists are rubbish, since you can't operate a high powered short-wave transmitter without at least the permission of the nearest government, at least not for long.

Sen. Inhofe Lists Creationists as Prominent Scientists in Global Warming Report

Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) issued a report that said, “Over 700 dissenting scientists … from around the globe challenged man-made global warming claims made by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and former Vice President Al Gore.”
Calling it a “groundbreaking report,” the document said, “The over 700 dissenting scientists are more than 13 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media-hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers.”

You mean "progressive" Richard Nixon? Ya know Reagan was arguably just as crooked as Nixon but the reason why Republicans don't embrace Nixon isn't because Nixon was crooked, it's because Nixon didn't believe the government was totally evil.

This hearing's more for the benefit of their "campaign contributors" in the natural gas industry than it is anything else. Especially by putting it behind closed doors, as the industry's been asserting for years (backed up by the previous administration's love of playing footsie with the fossil fuel boys) that the stuff in fraking fluid is a "trade secret" that simply can't get out. The reality is that, due to shoddy cement work, this shit is turning up in local drinking water supplies and they're looking at years of litigation if it can be proven that fraking fluid is the culprit.

I was doing some research just now on if Al-Awlaki had be a threat to foreign nations aside from the US. It turns out, he was partially responsible for some minor incidents in Britain, along with more major incidents in Yemen and Somalia. I believe the US has another justification for dealing with Americans with Awlaki. They were ongoing international incidents, threatening other nations and their civilians. As a citizen of the US, Awlaki needed to be handled by the US Government. Thankfully, Obama did just that.

However, I noticed two things in the Wikipedia article. The First Involves Britain:

Despite being banned from entering the United Kingdom in 2006, al-Awlaki spoke on at least seven occasions at five different venues around Britain via video-link in 2007–09. The East London Mosque provoked the outrage of The Daily Telegraph by allowing Noor Pro Media Events to hold a conference on New Year's Day 2009, showing a videotaped lecture by al-Awlaki; former Shadow Home Secretary Dominic Grieve expressed concern over al-Awlaki's involvement.

He also gave video-link talks in England to an Islamic student society at the University of Westminster in September 2008, an arts center in East London in April 2009 (after the Tower Hamlets council gave its approval), worshipers at the Al Huda Mosque in Bradford, and a dinner of the Cageprisoners organization in September 2008 at the Wandsworth Civic Centre in South London (at which he said: "We should make jihad for our brothers"). On August 23, 2009, al-Awlaki was banned by local authorities in Kensington and Chelsea, London, from speaking at Kensington Town Hall via videolink to a fundraiser dinner for Guantanamo detainees promoted by Cageprisoners. His videos, which discuss his Islamist theories, have also been circulated across the United Kingdom, and until February 2010 hundreds of audio tapes of his sermons were available at the Tower Hamlets public libraries. In 2010 it was reported that the London-based Islam Channel had in 2009 carried advertisements for DVDs of al-Awlaki's sermons and for at least two events at which he was due to be the star speaker via video link.

Britain is doing a failure of a job at controlling Radicalism in their own nation. This is one example. And I guarantee nothing will be done about it until a Radicalized British Muslim, or a British Far-Rightist, commits a major terror attack in a nation that is not Britain. Britain, at least in my eyes, is far more of a mess than the US.

Secondly:

Nasser al-Awlaki is the father of Anwar and grandfather of Abdulrahman al-Awlaki. After the deaths of his son and grandson, Nasser published a 6 minute audio message condemning the US for the killings. In the audio he described Obama:

"I urge the American people to bring the killers to justice. I urge them to expose the hypocrisy of the 2009 Nobel Prize laureate. To some, he may be that. To me and my family, he is nothing more than a child killer."

He claimed his son was far from any battlefield. After the audio, Nasser al-Awlaki began to deny he was endorsing violence after some media outlets interpreted his audio in that way.

A brother-in-law of Awlaki is Tariq al-Dahab, who leads al-Qaeda insurgents in Yemen.

How the flying fuck is this guy not on a watchlist and being tracked constantly?

One more chemical factoid:

Between 2005 and 2009, the oil and gas service companies used hydraulic fracturing products containing 29 chemicals that are (1) known or possible human carcinogens, (2) regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act for their risks to human health, or (3) listed as hazardous air pollutants under the Clean Air Act. These 29 chemicals were components of more than 650 different products used in hydraulic fracturing.

The BTEX compounds – benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene – appeared in 60 of the hydraulic fracturing products used between 2005 and 2009. Each BTEX compound is a regulated contaminant under the Safe Drinking Water Act and a hazardous air pollutant under the
Clean Air Act. Benzene also is a known human carcinogen. The hydraulic fracturing companies injected 11.4 million gallons of products containing at least one BTEX chemical over the five year period.

The EPA plans to release two reports, one in 2012 that will summarize existing data, intermediate progress regarding retrospective case studies, scenario modeling and laboratory studies; and one in 2014 that will provide additional scientific results on these topics and report on prospective case studies and toxicological analyses.

Oh, it is actually inevitable - all species of (multicellular) animals eventually to extinct. Either they are replaced by superior versions of themselves, or the entire line gets superseded.

However, humans will be (apparently) the first species to cognitively be aware of and unwilling to stop their own extinction.

Another school board in another podunk, USA, town decides to tackle the evil of Evolution:

Kiel School District wrestles with 'origin of man' teachings

Although the mention of intelligent design or creationism in public school science classrooms has been struck down by federal courts, the Kiel School District is considering how to present freshmen with a “balanced” view of the various theories of the origin of man.

The Kiel School Board will discuss those alternate theories at its meeting tonight, though no action is planned.

The issue kicked off last fall, when Kiel resident Patty Kubetz sent the School Board a letter asking why only evolution is presented to freshmen science students.

[...]

Kubetz, who home-schools her own children, said she is not trying to coax the school district into teaching intelligent design or creationism. Rather, she said, she just wants to make sure students are made aware that there is more than one way to consider how man came to exist.

[...]

Kubetz’s husband, Randy Kubetz, is a member of the Kiel School Board, and the Kubetzes run a website called Wisconsin Citizens Involvement, which encourages community involvement and supports constitutional values and states’ rights.

[...]

Though she acknowledges her family’s strong Christian background, Kubetz said her interest in having this statement read is independent of her religious faith and doesn’t believe it would violate the Constitution.

[...]

... Superintendent Louise Blankenheim, adding that the board’s inclusion of this issue at a meeting is no different than how it handles any community concerns.

“It’s not something the board itself has determined to include as part of the agenda,” Blankenheim said. “They’re just responding to a letter from a community member. This is how they react to any type of topics brought to their attention.”

Although Blankenheim declined to comment on whether she believes mentioning intelligent design in class is appropriate, she allowed that strong feelings on either side make the topic worthy of at least a discussion.

[...]

Kubetz said she only wanted to open up the discussion, and the outcome will depend upon the will of the community.

“If the community does not want it, all they have to do is come to the meeting and say ‘I’m in support of it,’ or ‘I’m not in support of it,’” Kubetz said. “If more people are not in support of it, I will drop it. I’m not going to fight for something the community doesn’t want. I’m simply getting the ball rolling.”

Ah yes, feelings, everybody's got feelings.

Shouldn't we be more sensitive to the feelings of creationists?

And, the P-T boundary extinction event wasn't instantaneous but appears to have been a series of events, some more gradual than others. And, the changes in the atmosphere suggested by the proxies is larger than what we are doing. Additionally, the P-T events may not be reproducible - that is, they may have resulted from a unique set of conditions that we can't replicate today.

I see that thought, but if you have deliberately turned your back on the school system, that says a lot. A new poll from Public Policy Polling (D) shows that while former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is sewing up the Republican nomination, the process is dragging him down in key swing states — PPP numbers from Ohio show that a 56 percent majority of general election voters now view Romney unfavorably, which leads to a seven point deficit in a matchup with President Obama.

Obama leads Romney 49 - 42 in the new Ohio poll, a state where the political ground has shifted greatly over the last few months. After the massive defeat of SB 5, the anti-union legislation pushed by state Republicans, Obama has seen a major turnaround in his numbers on the ground.

Back in October, PPP’s President Dean Debnam said that were the election to have been held then, Obama would have lost. PPP’s analysis at the time suggested it would be hard to see more support coming to the president as the election got closer. The SB 5 vote moved the state back toward Obama in PPP’s November poll, resulting in a nine point lead, and it seems that trend is continuing into the new year.

Interesting that Prime Burger and the first McDonald's restaurant opened within a year of each other as businesses of about the same size, offering the same product to roughly the same demographic--although Prime probably saw more foot-traffic in Manhattan than McDonald's had in San Bernadino.

Prime Burger concentrated on quality, tradition, and personalized service. Today, their single restaurant is a beloved nostalgia joint that's essentially unchanged from decades ago.

McDonald's concentrated on turning the burger into a commodity, getting it out the door as fast as possible, and franchising that experience to other communities. Today, they have over 33,000 locations in 119 countries, with $24 billion in annual revenues.

News from my neck of the woods...

Albemarle deputies brave fighting rooster while trying to deliver summons

A deputy became a victim of “fowl” play while attempting to deliver a summons Monday, according to Albemarle County Sheriff Chip Harding.

The incident occurred when Tom Wood and two fellow deputies surrounded a house on Mountain View Drive to deliver a summons to Sara Bishop Gibson, 34, for failing to appear in court.

Harding said Wood pulled out a can of mace while “keeping a close eye on a dog in the yard that did not appear to appreciate him being there.”

“All of a sudden he heard a sound of wings beating, and a large rooster hit him beak first just below the belt hard enough to double him over,” Harding said.

Wood reflexively sprayed mace at the rooster, but it had no effect on the bird.

“The bird never gave any ground,” Harding said.

Harding said the rooster went back to walking around the yard and eating as Wood’s fellow deputies collapsed into hysterics.

“It turns out that no one was home so the deputies continue their dangerous quest,” Harding said.

Honestly, I don't care if they do. More power to them. We have enough Minuteman and Trident missiles to detach Iran from the Asian continent. Occupy Oakland: Police release video of City Hall break-in

Video here:[Link: oakland.granicus.com...]

The surveillance video, taken Saturday, shows a man prying open the front door with a crowbar and a crowd streaming in, dumping garbage on the floor and stealing an American flag that they then burn on the building’s front steps.

But if you had one last meal to eat today before being executed and had to choose between the two, which would you eat in?

That's tough. I love the idea of Prime Burger and the atmosphere of the place but the burger itself about average for what you might expect from a mid-priced family chain like TGIFriday's or UNO's. In my hypothetical prison cell on death row, I might actually find a Big Mac more comforting. I've eaten a whole lot more of them over my life and associate them with fond memories of family and friends.

For sure. The problem is now that the "few" are the only ones out there anymore as far as the current protests for Occupy movement. 90% of the people who were involved at the start, no longer go to these things and camp out. Why would they. Its a total clusterfuck of causes with some idiot troublemakers hijacking the events to cause mayhem. I think the best thing the Occupy movement could do is distance itself from these current protests, regroup and organize for the Spring with major initiatives. Camping out is not a strategy, not one that rational working people can be involved in anyways.

Family of Slain Border Agent Files $25M Claim

The family of a slain U.S. Border Patrol agent filed a $25 million wrongful death claim against the federal government on Wednesday.

The 65-page document that's a precursor to a lawsuit was filed in Phoenix and claims Brian Terry was killed because U.S. investigators allowed murder weapons into the hands of criminals, The Arizona Republic ([Link: bit.ly...] reported.

...Terry's family claims federal agents were negligent and acted "in violation of ATF's own policies and procedures."

The claim was filed on behalf of Terry's parents as well as surviving siblings. In it, family members criticize federal authorities for attempting to cover up the flawed strategy in Fast and Furious and its connection with Terry's death.

It also said that family members met last March with former U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke, who resigned amid the scandal. The claim alleges he incorrectly said that guns found at the scene were from a store in Texas and that the fatal bullet would never be found even though it was recovered during an autopsy.

So you tossed out a piece of bullshit by attempting to smear Pelosi with your comment. Leaving that out and simply calling the perpetrators of the recent action assholes was fine. But you had to convert it into a smear, got called on it, and are now running off to stir other pots.

Can you say: B U L L S H I T?

"We are alarmed and saddened that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation appears to have succumbed to political pressure," Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said on Tuesday. "Our greatest desire is for Komen to reconsider this policy and recommit to the partnership on which so many women count."

Critics of the decision have pointed to the fact that Komen recently hired a vice president who had pushed for the defunding of Planned Parenthood during a gubernatorial run.

According to Komen, the decision was born not out of political pressure but rather as part of an ongoing effort to exact "stronger performance criteria for our grantees."

"Starting in 2010, Komen began an initiative to help us do a better job of measuring the impact of community grants," the statement said. "This is important because we invest significant dollars in our local community programs--$93 million in 2011, which provided for 700,000 breast health screenings and diagnostic procedures." (According to Planned Parenthood, it received roughly $680,000 worth of Komen grants in 2011 and $580,000 in 2010.)

Among the new criteria, according to Komen, is the implementation of "more stringent eligibility standards to safeguard donor dollars" - including a clause which prohibits Komen from giving money to organizations that are under local, state or federal investigations. Planned Parenthood is currently being investigated by the House oversight and investigations subcommittee over its funding.

"Some might argue that our standards are too exacting, but over the past three decades people have given us more than just their money," the statement said. "They have given us their trust and we take that responsibility very seriously."

Komen said it was regrettable that longstanding grantees such as Planned Parenthood had been "impacted" but emphasized that they "want to be absolutely clear that our grant-making decisions are not about politics."

Even so, the foundation has over the last 24 hours been subject to a number of attacks from women's health advocates, who saw the decision as part of an ongoing effort by conservative Republicans to take down Planned Parenthood."

So easy, PP is always going to be investigated because someone is always going to be trying to put them out-of-business. Nice, convenient, policy to cut their funding.

Except that no one believes them.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Today's big news isn't in NYC, but rather the UK, where a lawmaker has intimated that law enforcement is focusing on the Times of London in their widening investigation into the News Corp. hacking scandal.

The lawmaker, Tom Watson, from the opposition Labour Party, who has been a central figure in the inquiries into phone hacking, said in a message on Twitter that Scotland Yard had “confirmed to me they are investigating” The Times “over e-mail hacking.”

A spokesman for Scotland Yard, who spoke in return for anonymity under departmental rules, said officers investigating hacking were “in contact with Mr. Watson in relation to specific issues he wishes to raise” after he sent the police a letter on Jan. 23. But the spokesman declined to confirm specifically that The Times was under investigation.

News International, the British newspaper arm of the Murdoch media empire, said it had no immediate comment on Mr. Watson’s message.

The development was significant in two regards: it focused attention on e-mail hacking rather than the illicit voice mail interception at the center of inquiries so far, and it suggested that the most august of the Murdoch publications in Britain was not immune from scrutiny.

The case apparently was related to an episode in 2009 when a reporter who has since left The Times of London exposed the identity of a police officer who blogged under the pseudonym Nightjack, according to British news reports.

James Harding, the editor of The Times of London, said in written testimony to a formal inquiry into press conduct last month that “there was an incident where the newsroom was concerned that a reporter had gained unauthorized access to an e-mail account.”

The reporter “was issued with a formal written warning for professional misconduct,” Mr. Harding said.

Article on Iranian Website: "We Welcome War"

On the eve of the Iranian Navy's extensive Gulf maneuvers in December 2011, the conservative Serat News website, which is close to Hossein Shariatmadari, editor of the Kayhan newspaper, published an article by blogger Ali-Reza Forghani titled "We Welcome War." The article glorifies jihad and martyrdom against the U.S. and warns it and its leaders that not only do the Iranians have no fear of war, but they long to die in it. The article also set out details of threats, including suicide missions against American targets.

re: #278 Killgore Trout

Everyone seems to think that Israel has a couple hundred nuclear weapons since after they completed the Dimona facility. They've never acknowledged whether they have weapons or not, and have not tested a weapon. They've used the ambiguity as a defense in and of itself to ward off a potential attack, though that fell short during the first Gulf War when Saddam lobbed dozens of Scuds at Israel in an attempt to bring them into the fight and break up the coalition effort.

Now, Iran's mullahs have different intentions and Iran's nuclear infrastructure indicates a completely different tact. Far from being open about their nuclear ambitions, they've repeatedly hidden nuclear facilities, buried them underground, and spread them around the country. All while calling for genocidal rhetoric against Israel's existence mind you. Carter hears on what he wants to hear - that Iran is carrying out enrichment for peaceful purposes, but Iran's actions suggest something quite different.

Combine the nuclear program with an intention to develop and master intermediate range missiles capable of hitting Israel and other locales throughout the Middle East, and it's a threat to the region at large.

It's that latter part that has me wondering whether the recent spate of assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists aren't the result of the Saudi or other Arab countries trying to thwart Iran's ambitions (another chapter of the Sunni/Shi'a split) and regional hegemony among the Middle Eastern powers.

An unedited segment of the video showing the Pakistani Taliban executing 15 Frontier Constabulary personnel who were captured in the district of Tank at the end of December has emerged on the Internet.

The video, which was published on the LiveLeak video-sharing website, shows the 15 paramilitary men blindfolded and lined up along a hillside; some are handcuffed together. Taliban fighters then take turns gunning down the Pakistani troops, one at a time, with AK-47 assault rifles.

The graphic video shows the slain Pakistani security personnel falling to the ground as those still living remain standing. The Taliban are heard chanting, "We will cross all limits to avenge your blood."

NPR: Rift between Planned Parenthood and Susan G Komen

Before this action, Komen had lost out on donations from groups and individuals who opposed its ties to Planned Parenthood. Several Catholic dioceses around the country stopped supporting Komen because of the issue. So ending its funding for Planned Parenthood could restore some of those funding sources.

The Southern Baptist Convention's publishing division was also recently forced to pull its line of pink-bound Bibles because of complaints that some of the proceeds donated to Komen might be finding their way to Planned Parenthood.

On the other hand, numerous calls for boycotting Susan G. Komen and for supporting Planned Parenthood have sprung up on social media since Tuesday's decision.

I'm pretty sure the whole region is nervous and most of them are probably helping behind the scenes.

In my opinion, Komen stopped being a non-profit foundation dedicated to finding a cure for cancer when they launched their "BUY PINK STUFF" campaign, which is to SELL PRODUCTS and maybe donate some minuscule percent to cancer research just to keep their 501(c)(3) status.

Now they exist to help corporations SELL PINK STUFF.

Well, on one hand, over-hunting has been a chronic problem in the United States. On the other hand, Canadian geese are practically a pest in the United States. As long as populations are monitored, I don't see why it would be a problem to let the hunters off the leash a little bit more.

So much for Carter's theory of one or two Iranian bombs...
Israel says Iran has material for four A-bombs

Israel estimated on Thursday that Iran could make four atomic bombs by further enriching uranium it has already stockpiled, and could produce its first within a year of deciding to build one.
....
Citing figures similar to those from the U.N. nuclear agency, Kochavi told Israel's annual Herzliya Conference on strategic affairs: "Iran has accumulated more than 4 tonnes of uranium enriched to a level of 3.5 percent and nearly 100 kilos at an enrichment level of 20 percent.

"This amount of material is already enough for four atomic bombs."

That would still require significant time run through the centrifuges (the same ones that have been hit by Stuxnet et seq. reducing their overall numbers and processing capabilities to some degree). It wouldn't happen overnight, but they're developing the capabilities to develop a processing stream for weapons grade materials though at this time they don't appear to have any (90% enriched uranium versus the LEU of 5-20%).

Some good news: Most-wanted terror leaders killed in the Philippines

The Philippine military said it killed Southeast Asia's most-wanted terrorist and two other senior militants Thursday in a U.S.-backed airstrike marking one of the region's biggest anti-terrorism successes in recent years.

The dawn strike targeting a militant camp on a southern Philippine island killed Malaysian Zulkifli bin Hir, also known as Marwan, a top leader of the regional, al Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah terror network, said military spokesman Col. Marcelo Burgos.

Also killed were the leader of the Philippines-based Abu Sayyaf militants, Umbra Jumdail, and a Singaporean leader in Jemaah Islamiyah, Abdullah Ali, who used the guerrilla name Muawiyah, Burgos said.

I had a cat bed that the two FO ignored for years. Then when cleaning the bedroom one day I moved it temporarily out into the hall in order to vacuum and left it there. And the cats started using it.

I then realized that I'd placed it next to a wall that had a heat duct running up it. Plus the placement let a cat sit with almost full concealment (only eyes and ears showing) at the intersection of the upstairs rooms (bathroom and three bedrooms) while also being able to watch anyone who came up the stairs.

Since it was out of the way in a sort of nook I left it there.

Morning. Well look at what we have here. More wingnuttery from Komen's new VP Karen Handel:

Feds rip Georgia voter system

As a coalition of pro-immigration groups rallied at the state Capitol on Monday, Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel was reacting to a U.S. Justice Department repudiation of her system of verifying citizenship of voters.

In a six-page letter issued last week, and released Monday, Justice Department lawyers said Handel’s office had created a system that “does not produce accurate and reliable information and that thousands of citizens who are in fact eligible to vote under Georgia law have been flagged.”

Handel was not pleased. The decision, she said, “shows a shocking disregard for the integrity of our elections.”

Continues.

And here's a quote where she went wingnut over this.

“DOJ has thrown open the door for activist organizations such as ACORN to register non-citizens to vote in Georgia’s elections, and the state has no ability to verify an applicant’s citizenship status or whether the individual even exists. DOJ completely disregarded Georgia’s obvious and direct interest in preventing non-citizens from voting, instead siding with the ACLU and MALDEF (The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund). “Clearly, politics took priority over common sense and good public policy.”

Circa 2009.

351 iossarian  Thu, Feb 2, 2012 7:55:15am

I think the whole Komen debacle really throws two (related) aspects of contemporary US politics into sharp relief:

1) There is no such thing as an apolitical movement. Any cause will eventually be drawn into the general battle royale between Democrats and Republicans.

2) The Republicans' primary objective is to extend their power through whatever means possible. Their fundamental ideology is one of wielding power over others, and so it makes perfect sense to use their influence in one sphere of activity to exert their ideology against another sphere of activity, even if those spheres are only tangentially related (and may in fact have some activities that are complementary, as is the case with Komen and PP).

Speaking of Komen, their right-wing capitulation caused this to happen:

Top Susan G. Komen Official Resigned Over Planned Parenthood Cave-In

The decision, made in December, caused an uproar inside Komen. Three sources told me that the organization's top public health official, Mollie Williams, resigned in protest immediately following the Komen board's decision to cut off Planned Parenthood. Williams, who served as the managing director of community health programs, was responsible for directing the distribution of $93 million in annual grants. Williams declined to comment when I reached her yesterday on whether she had resigned her position in protest, and she declined to speak about any other aspects of the controversy.

But John Hammarley, who until recently served as Komen's senior communications adviser and who was charged with managing the public relations aspects of Komen's Planned Parenthood grant, said that Williams believed she could not honorably serve in her position once Komen had caved to pressure from the anti-abortion right. "Mollie is one of the most highly respected and ethical people inside the organization, and she felt she couldn't continue under these conditions," Hammarley said. "The Komen board of directors are very politically savvy folks, and I think over time they thought if they gave in to the very aggressive propaganda machine of the anti-abortion groups, that the issue would go away. It seemed very short-sighted to me."

That makes the additional information about Koman in this article all the more "interesting."

In 2000, when I first became a breast cancer activist, one of my first assignments was contacting the senators and members of Congress in my area to encourage their support for the Breast & Cervical Cancer Prevention & Treatment Act. The bill was to provide Medicaid coverage for uninsured women diagnosed through the Breast & Cervical Cancer Prevention & Screening Act, which had been passed several years earlier. IOW, the Treatment Act was necessary because uninsured women were getting no-cost breast cancer diagnosis, but still had no means to pay for treatment.
...
Upon calling my GOP senator and speaking with his aide, I was shocked to hear her tell me "Sen.__ can't sign on as a co-sponsor to the bill because all the breast cancer groups aren't in agreement on it." Shocked, I asked her who was opposing it. She told me that Komen opposed the bill. When I asked her why, she explained that Komen felt that treatment for uninsured breast cancer patients should be funded through private donations, like the pink ribbon race. I was speechless, in shock. A phone call to another activist confirmed it was true - Komen was lobbying behind the scenes to kill the bill. A moment later, Sen.__'s aide called me back and begged me not to repeat our conversation to anyone, that she had given me the information by mistake.

There's much more.

Last time he went to talk him Whitey reached into his pocket and peeled off some bills from a stack that could choke a horse. Manager came back to me with the downpayment for the work I was to do

George Bush made (as of June 2007) 171 recess appointments, more than Bill Clinton (139) and Barack Obama (32). Also, recess appointments are temporary: they expire at the end of the Congressional session they were appointed in (IIRC), according to Article II, Section 2 of the United States Constitution (which the GOP has no understanding of). Presidents since George Washington have made recess appointments. The GOP doesn't like Constitutional powers unless they are the ones wielding it.

Also, there is an incredibly timely documentary that's about to come out. In light of the Komen debacle, I expect it's going to get a lot more attention than it would have before:

Palestinians throw shoes, stones at U.N. convoy

GAZA (Reuters) - Dozens of Palestinians threw shoes, sticks and stones at U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's convoy as it crossed into the Gaza Strip on Thursday, protesting against what they saw as a slight against Palestinians jailed in Israel.

No one was injured during the hostile welcome and the vehicles, which crossed into the Hamas-ruled territory from southern Israel, pushed through the crowd and sped away.

Ban is visiting the region to try to restart long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

"I thank the people of Gaza for the warm welcome," he told a news conference, provoking laughter among local journalists. "I met many people who were waiting for me at the entrance."

Kind of, sort of but not really. It was a toxic and reckless movement from the very begining and it was politically dangerous to give them anything other than a vague statement supporting the right to protest. Luckily OWS rebuffed early attempts to associate with Dem politicians but opponents are still going to use any statements support OWS for political gain. That's just the way it works. Dems would to the same thing to Republican statements supporting the Tea Party. You might not agree but it's still fair political game.

Recess appointments are constitutionally provided for mechanism to fill positions in government. The numbers cited in your comment alone don't tell the whole story though.

One of the reasons that Obama's number of appointments are so low is that the GOP has purposefully engaged in parliamentary action to remain in session (even if it's only to gavel in and out of session) to prevent the President from using the recess appointment power in the first place. Democrats had tried to do something similar during some of Bush's second term, but aren't nearly as debased as the GOP attempts, which is why President Obama announced the recess appointments in claiming that the Congress wasn't in actual session but engaging in a sham. Since Congress wasn't actually conducting business, it wasn't in session even though the GOP leadership was gaveling in and out daily.

Polo Club Founder Adopts Girlfriend Amid Civil Suit Over DUI Death

A wealthy Florida polo club founder has adopted his longtime adult girlfriend in what attorneys believe may be a legal maneuver to protect his financial assets--which he estimates as "several hundred million dollars"--as he faces a trial for a drunk driving incident that killed a 23-year-old.

John Goodman, 48, formally adopted Heather Laruso Hutchins, 42, in October 2011. The couple started dating in 2009. Goodman is the founder of the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Fla.

West Palm Beach Judge Glenn Kelley wrote in a court order that the twists in the case "border on the surreal and take the Court into a legal twilight zone."

"The Defendant has effectively diverted a significant portion of the assets of the children's trust to a person with whom he is intimately involved at a time when his personal assets are largely at risk in this case," the judge wrote. [...]

Get outta my flat and make room for the stupid tourists, you cheap bastards!

LONDON -- Landlords in Britain's capital are evicting tenants so they can cash in on this summer's Olympic Games by charging tourists many times the usual rent.
Homes in the east London boroughs where many events are to be held are fetching between five and 15 times their typical rates as properties are rebranded as short-term "Olympic lets." Some landlords are also enforcing expensive "penalty" clauses for tenants who want to remain during the gathering of the world's top athletes.
Rent controls are almost non-existent in Britain and some Londoners told msnbc.com that the looming increase in housing costs will leave them with no choice but to leave the city for the summer.

Since when did London turn into New York?/

OMG! Totalitarian theocratic tyrant develops economic plan by decoding ancient scriptures!
At prayer breakfast, Obama says Christian faith guides his policies

Obama, speaking to 3,000 people at the Washington Hilton, used passages from the Bible to make the case that his push for a more equitable economy is rooted in a long-honored value system. And he suggested that his proposal to increase taxes on wealthier Americans is consistent with the teachings of Jesus.

I actually called Pelosi's office after she supported Occupy Wall Street. This was around the time when news organizations were calling attention to all sorts of odd statements made by Occupiers, who included nearly everyone under their infinitely broad platform. At this time, there was a video by an LA School Teacher/Occupier who was calling for the end of "the Zionist Run Federal Reserve."

I called Nancy's Office. I said "I want to find out if Nancy Pelosi supports Occupy Wall Street". I gave no indication what side I was on.

I barely finished this sentence when I was cut off by the staffer. He said "If you're calling about the ad from "Emergency Committee for Israel" Pelosi is about to issue a statement clarifying her position." Then he hung up.

I had no idea about this ad, and I had to google it to find out about it. This staffer, I presume upon hearing my NY "Jewish" accent, made a snap judgement about me and gave me a canned answer.

And a footnote: There was never a clarification issued from Pelosi's office. Her staff was just shutting up Jews as fast as they could. I was not impressed. (FWIW: I'm a registered Democrat.)

Her statement is fair game, sure. But relevance of her statement is as well. It doesn't mean much.

But the key point I disagree on is the equivocation between OWS 'coverage' and the 'bashing of Republicans all day, every day to the exclusion of other topics.' As if we're incessantly harping on them with no merit to the criticisms. There is tons of merit to the majority of criticisms.

Not to mention, the GOP and it's members are in control of a large part of the US federal, state and local governments. In other words, relevant.

The OWS? Not in control of anything. Not even in control of the kids with OWS signs. In other words, not relevant.

So this contrast is lacking, to put it politely.

Rick Joyner is doubling down on his claims that an earthquake will soon bring ruin to the west coast, writing in an email today that the New Madrid Fault Line will also rupture. Joyner, the head of MorningStar Ministries and the Oak Initiative, said that America’s policy towards Israel is responsible for “natural disasters that have struck our country.” He has already warned people “to get out of” California because America has “fallen to some of the ultimate depravity that a nation could fall into,” and said that the recent earthquake in Japan will lead to a demonic, Nazi takeover of the United States.

Funny you should mention that. Members of the Occupy movement are in Iran this morning to attend an anti-Israel film festival.
Tehran hosts 2nd Intl. Confab on Hollywoodism

A number of international filmmakers, university and religious scholars, authors, peace activists and leaders of occupy movements are in Tehran. The reason: attending the Second International Conference on Hollywoodism and Cinema.

The international conference is being held as a sideline program of the Fajr International Film Festival, marking the 33rd anniversary of Iran's Islamic Revolution.

Hllywood and Human Tolerance, Cinema and Awakening, plus Hollywoodism and Zionism are the main themes of this year's event.

I'm kind of amazed at how people don't really understand how current Iranian propaganda operates. By this I mean both supporters and detractors. Much of what they do is similar to what the Soviets used to do with the American progressive movements in the late 1960s and the corollary reaction by the John Birch Society, et al. So it's not uncommon to see attempted co-opting by ideological groups.

We joined the 99% in Zuccotti Park (Freedom Plaza) on Monday, October 10 to Occupy Wall Street. We ran into Danny Schechter, "The News Dissector," a blogger, filmmaker and self-proclaimed "trouble-maker."

Danny Schechter is the director of the the films "Plunder: The Crime of Our Time" & "In Debt We Trust." He has long been an activist against the greed of the corrupt financial system.

It's not even an argument. It's a singular statement that is supposed to have a compelling meaning, which is based on syllogism: they bad, therefore, them who they support are bad.

This is what passes for logic.

Those Darwinists turn up everywhere.

Started with the Protocols:

Do not suppose for a moment that these statements are empty
words: think carefully of the successes we arranged for Darwinism, Marxism, Nietzscheism. To us Jews, at any rate, it should be plain to see what a disintegrating importance these directives have had upon the minds of the goyim.

My wishy-washy Captain Sensible centrist position: with time the extremism at OWS accumulated to the point where it now more or less represents the movement, since there seem to be no attempts to distance from this extremism (and I don't mean to say that each OWSer is an extremist or is tainted just by participating). It doesn't mean that the current extremism at OWS can be used to taint any previous supporters.

Al Qaeda Endorses McCain

The Post today reports that Al Qaeda has endorsed John McCain for president. With seemingly impeccable logic, the cave dwellers -- actually, more likely, Quetta-squatters -- say that by electing McCain, the United States will commit itself to an extension of President Bush's blunders and thus exhaust itself militarily and financially.

Of course, Al Qaeda says that the way it can assist McCain is through a terrorist act that will rally Americans to his side.

Saying that McCain will continue the "failing march of his predecessor," Al Qaeda added:

"Al-Qaeda will have to support McCain in the coming election. ... [We] will push the Americans deliberately to vote for McCain so that he takes revenge for them against al-Qaeda. Al-Qaeda then will succeed in exhausting America."

The quotes came from an AQ-linked website called al-Hesbah and were written by Muhammad Haafid, a longtime contributor to the site. [...]

Hmm. For me this analogy is doubtful. OWS is nowhere near MLK's achievements. Which achievements overshadow any personal failings MLK had.

Ahoy there 'Cap'n'.

That's actually my position too, pretty much - popular protest movements are at their most reprsentaive at their largest and much less so when they start to dwindle to the point where you are basically left with a bunch of semi-pro protest nuts. The fact a protest movemens runs such a well trodden course doesn't, as you rightly point out, invalidate te original cause or it's supporters.
