He roiled the markets because the markets forgot that no one should trust what Trump says unless they’ve got independent verification from multiple sources that X occurred or will occur.
I know it’s tough when all Trump does is lie, and at the same time he telegraphs/projects exactly what he’s going to do, but everyone, including his own DOJ warns, not to trust what Trump says - especially on Twitter.

The markets forgot nothing-they never knew it. Fund managers want to buy on rumor, so they’re ahead of everyone else. These days it’s hard to have a moment to reflect on the quality of the rumor. There is also a long history of everyone doing the same thing so no one can be singled out for blame.

Trump’s backers actively supported a know nothing whose positions were empty platitudes and made that a badge of honor. The GOP went all in on the know-nothing to reflect their base.
They attacked Hillary because she knew what she was talking about and could speak in more than a few words.
It’s a natural impulse to try to figure out what the hell is going on in the mind of a monster like Donald Trump, but it’s a pointless exercise. The focus needs to be on stopping him from hurting people, and limiting the damage he can do.

Democratic Popular Vote Lead Keeps Growing
The Cook Political Report shows that the Democratic lead in the U.S. House popular vote for the 2018 midterms is now up to 8.5%.
Steve Benen: “For comparison purposes, note that in 2010 - which was widely seen as a GOP ‘wave’ cycle - Republicans won the U.S. House popular vote by 6.6%. In 1994, which was seen as a Republican ‘revolution,’ the GOP won the U.S. House popular vote by 7.1%.”

Even if three out of the original “Gang of Eight” are no longer in the Senate, and another (Miss Lindsay) has gone full-metal Trump-toady, the odds of the Senate in the 116th Congress ever (re-)passing a bill of that sort are (IMO) near-zero at best. “In contrast with leaders seated around them, President Trump and first lady Melania Trump did not recite the Apostles’ Creed — a common statement in Christianity — at the Washington, D.C. funeral for late President George H.W. Bush on Wednesday,” Newsweek reports.
Video of the funeral showed former President Barack Obama, former first lady Michelle Obama, former President Bill Clinton, 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, former President Jimmy Carter, former first lady Rosalynn Carter and Vice President Mike Pence, among others, reciting the Apostles’ Creed during the funeral. The Trumps, meanwhile, silently held their sheets as others recited the creed, which begins: ‘I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of Heaven and Earth.’”

Wasn’t Melania raised as a Communist, without a religion?
Might have been raised as such, but she’s publicly confirmed she’s Catholic.
That Trump even had rosary beads was news — practicing Catholics often use the beads for prayers, moving fingers along each bead to keep track of how many times each is said, and repeated. Although Trump was raised in Slovenia, a country whose religious population is predominantly Catholic, she married Donald Trump, a Presbyterian, in 2005 at Bethesda-by-the-Sea Episcopal church in Palm Beach, Florida, and has celebrated Easter services there as recently as this year. Her 11-year-old son, Barron, who was baptized at the same church, will attend St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Maryland, in the fall.

You’re going to be pleased/shocked with the performance gain.
I had a 2010 iMac and still have a 2010 MacBook Pro where I swapped out their respective optical drives for SSDs. Massive speed gains. Don’t have the numbers handy, but boot times alone decreased significantly.
I’m currently using my dad’s 2013 iMac, where the boot drive is a SSD in a USB3 external case. Same deal: even with the overhead of being an external drive, it still boots faster than the internal mechanical one.
I haven’t dealt with the hybrid drives where Apple puts the OS on the SSD portion of the drive, but I’d imagine that’s a similar story.

We’ve seen Russia already interfere in the internal elections of the US and two of our closest long term allies (France and the UK). We have to rethink how we approach defense spending and priorities. It does no good to plan for the last war, when the next war will look nothing like it.

That helps contextualize the later fall of the Western Roman Empire - with the political split, as I recall, they no longer had both the money and population to rejuvenate the army as they had in the Republican and early Imperial days, right?

“Lobbyists representing the Saudi government reserved blocks of rooms at President Trump’s D.C. hotel within a month of Trump’s election in 2016 — paying for an estimated 500 nights at the luxury hotel in just three months,” the Washington Post reports.
“The visits were part of an unorthodox campaign that offered [US military] veterans a free trip to D.C.- then sent them to Capitol Hill to lobby against a law the Saudis opposed.”
“Some of the veterans who stayed at Trump’s hotel say they were kept in the dark about the Saudi’s role in the trips. Now, they wonder if they were used twice over: not just to deliver someone else’s message to Congress, but also to deliver business to the Trump Organization.”

I got a good electric piano with 88 keys for my son at Guitar Center for $300; it only has the sustain pedal, but for him, that’s ok. Go to a music store like that. I think the report was that a hydraulic pump on one of the landing legs was failing, so the fldecided not to risk it. It looks like all the legs came out, though.
The legs came out at the right time, but the hydraulic pump “locked-up” (Musk’s own words) earlier when needed for the grid fins to control its direction and movements. So it started to spin and wobble and that probably put it out of it’s landing spot coordinates. It then must have gotten it’s hydraulics working again right before it slowed and the legs came into position.
In the video Musk posted you can see it is still spinning as it is coming down…watch the black and white colorings on the booster body.
We didn’t get to see the landing at first because when it started to spin and wobble they cut the video feed. It was pretty evident things were not going well when they cut the video.

re: #209 Patricia Kayden

Someone should explain to Trump that the VP only hurts, he doesn’t help.
There’s basically two questions for picking a VP that make any sort of sense:
1. If something happens to me, who do I think is the next best person for the job?
2. If I win, who can I trust on policy matters that I’m not particularly well versed on?
re: #215 Belafon
Later on, you might try to get her a mandolin.
That would be wonderful! My dad had taught himself to play mandolin and banjo. I tried to get her to try the guitar, but she said that the strings hurt her fingers and she won’t pursue that. But then, she’s only 11 and the fact that she has the wherewithal to practice an instrument without any help from us and have a blast doing it means she might change her mind at some point.

Apparently, the only reason to Merrick Garland someone is if they’re a Democrat.
re: #225 Big Beautiful Door
Trump isn’t well versed on any issue.
I think Trump picked Pence in sort of an old school “who helps me convince the evangelicals that I’m not actually the anti-christ” move. There was a time when picking someone from a different region, or different wing of the party made sense. But the GOP has gotten much more monolithic in the last 30 years.
On the Democratic side, it still makes some sense. I suspect if the 2020 Democratic nominee is a blue state progressive type, you’ll probably see a red state moderate type as the VP nominee (not quite Gore-Lieberman, but be prepared). Or if it’s someone from the Senate, I could see a governor getting the VP nod; or vice versa.
Then again, it also depends on what you expect your VP to do besides wake up each morning and check on your health.

Or, see if the guitar can be set up to play easier with lighter gauge strings too. Sometimes a few dollars at a good guitar tech bench can make all the difference in an instrument.

The 88 weighted keys will make it much easier to play a real piano later because they’ll be used to the amount of pressure needed.
Mandolins can be found fairly inexpensive too. Might be fun when you are slightly ahead to buy one and just leave it laying around and then start listening to some good bluegrass music … ;)

“TORONTO — The Ontario government is discriminating against LGBTQ students by repealing a modernized sex-education curriculum that gave teachers and children the tools needed for an inclusive classroom experience, parents and lawyers said Thursday as they announced plans to launch a human rights case over the issue.
The Progressive Conservatives are replacing the curriculum with a version developed in 1998 while they carry out consultations for a new lesson plan. The move, announced soon after Premier Doug Ford took power in June, was the fulfillment of a hot-button election campaign promise.“

How has someone been a Secretary of State for longer than I’ve been alive?
Not all WASPs were WASPs.
Over 25,000 women made application to join the WASP; 1,830 were accepted but only 1,074 completed the training.[3] The applicants all had prior experience and airman certificates. While the majority of those accepted into the WASP were Caucasian women, its members also included Hazel Ying Lee and Maggie Gee both Chinese Americans, Ola Mildred Rexroat a Native American, and two Mexican Americans.[4] Mildred Hemmans Carter, the only African American applicant, was asked to withdraw her application because of her race. In 1940, at age 19, she had earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the Tuskegee Institute. The following year, she received her aviation certification. Because of her gender, Carter was also rejected from flying with the Tuskegee Airmen. Seventy years later, she was recognized retroactively as a WASP, and she took her final flight at age 90.[5]

Quayle actually made one of the most telling comments of the 2000 presidential campaign. Appearing on The Tonight Show shortly after he ended his quixotic presidential campaign, Quayle was asked why he shut it down. Instead of stating the obvious like “people think I’m an idiot” or the GOP approved “the media hate me,” Quayle said, “We just could not stay with the Bush money machine.” He went on to explain that he had not expected to match Bush dollar for dollar, but he had also not expected the ease with which Bush overwhelmed all the other candidates combined.

What you would do is convince Pence to announce some plausible reason to announce he is choosing not to run for a second term as VP. That lets Trump pick Haley or whoever and lets Pence maintain his viability for 2024. Pence won’t primary Trump because the GOP base loves Trump and he’ll crush anyone who tries to primary him.

I’m trying to find an electric keyboard for my kids for Christmas and don’t know anything about how to choose a decent one. I don’t have a pile of money, so I’m looking for something that plays the different sounds, has a full keyboard, and doesn’t need a speaker. I’m just lost when I look at Amazon. Can anyone help?
I’ve been looking into one for myself, and went to a couple of websites where they have reviews. 88-key models are way too costly for me, but the smaller models are acceptable in price. Anyway, check out these:
61-keys — Yamaha PSR-e353, Yamaha YPT-255 (not sure if touch sensitive), Yamaha EZ220 (lighted keys)
76-keys — Yamaha YPG-235, Casio WK-245 (touch sensitive)
44-keys - Casio SA-76
My notes are from last year, so some models may no longer be sold new.

88 is the same as a piano. Anything written for piano can be played on it. It is bigger but with weighted keys responds to the hand like an acoustic instrument.
Smaller keyboards are good for traveling or playing in a band. Or if space is limited.

It depends on what level y’all can play at. For classical compositions, you’d need all 88 keys. For most pop music, 61 would be fine. 44 keys would be for the rank beginner and your girl would probably outgrow it pretty quickly. Lighted keyboards show which keys should be pressed — good for learning tunes straight out of the box.

My 2 cents. A decent drum kit will run you a lot more money. After all, it’s skins. And wood. Which need tuning, and all the things involved with brass (cymbals). Just as a cheap guitar can kill inspiration, so can cheap anything musically. You can pick up an electronic kit much cheaper and with a decent powered monitor you can get up to speed. Then see if you want to sink into a good kit.
I was going towards drums before I started playing guitar. I practiced on the old thick phone books.

This is the advice my parents were given when I said I wanted an electric guitar. They got me an SG Jr., which would be highly sought after now. Oh, I’m not one of those who think things should be easy. No lighted keyboards for her! Yeah, I think just going with the straight 88 keys would be the best. After all, I want to learn as well and, to me, a keyboard with fewer keys would be like trying to learn to play a saxophone on a recorder.

There are wonderful weighted 88 key digital pianos out there. We bought a Yamaha YDP 223 years ago and it is still as good as the day we bought it. Has it all.
Yamaha is kick ass full size digital, and it sounds fantastic. You learn on something like that, you play anything.
re: #318 Sionainn, Too Exhausted to be a Nasty Devilbitch
Oh, I’m not one of those who think things should be easy. No lighted keyboards for her! Yeah, I think just going with the straight 88 keys would be the best. After all, I want to learn as well and, to me, a keyboard with fewer keys would be like trying to learn to play a saxophone on a recorder.
C’mon, tell the truth…you want you and the daughter to play a keyboard like this:

I’d like to find a nice but cheap drum machine I can play on, record and then play along with on my guitar.
For his birthday, I’m going to get my son a Launch Key 61 Midi Controller. It comes with Ableton Live Lite and is designed to integrate with it. They also make 49 key and 25 key versions. They all include buttons that you can use to control tracks or set as drums sounds.
I also bought him this multipad percussion module for Christmas. That way he can grab it, some sticks, and go to a friend’s and play.
Orange shitgibbon found his phone.

A used set is fine, actually the way to go, but wood is a living thing. It may have been mishandled. A drummer who knows his stuff would help. And trust me, I attempted to tune drums many a time. It’s not always a tuning key and ear. My current drummer, who is a real musician who can sit in with orchestras uses a drum dial precision tuner along with pitch paired sticks. You can tell.
I guess what I’m attempting to say is don’t go cheap just to save a buck. There are deals, but you will get what you pay for. You will not hear what you hear on songs and the frustration will screw you because you are just starting out.
A used set of decent drums is fine as long as no issues are there. Fun fact. You can buy a small cheap kit and break a head and pay about 10% of the price of the entire kit to replace it. One important fact. As long as you do not overpay, you can recoup some money if you choose to unload or move up.
Just my 2 cents. Hope this helped in some small way.

Drums, I think, are among the most finicky of instruments. The quality of the heads, the drum bodies, the sticks, the mounting gear, the way they’re tuned, the locations of the microphones (if being used), the air in the room, the phase of the moon, if Mercury is in retrograde - every single little thing makes a difference in how the things sound.

Our worship team is blessed to have a couple of professional drummers volunteer to play on Sundays. I know exactly how sensitive they are. Mixing them is one of a competent sound man’s greatest challenges - alongside controlling those damned guitarists with their amplifiers blaring out across or under the stage.

re: #333 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.
I’ve see very talented drummers make a cheap kit sound decent. But behind a good kit, they kill.
It is in the hands eventually, but hands do not become better with an instrument that will not respond.
Watch for this on Craigslist or seek it out. It’s the later version of what we bought. It flat out kicks ass. It has it’s own speaker and that’s what ours sounds like.
Hope this helps, I’m only saying what I have experienced.

I almost bought a used set of Yamaha drums earlier this year as I was taking lessons at the time. They were a 5-piece Stage Custom with all the hardware including a good snare drum. The guy asked for $800, and that included the throne and cheap crappy Sabian cymbals. New, this set will run you close to a grand NOT COUNTING CYMBALS, and this is an entry level set that with new heads (I highly recommend you replace the heads if the set is new) sounds awesome.
P.S. I didn’t buy it, and I bought a condo a few months later, so in my situation electronic drums would obviously be the practical choice.

I’m gonna take a wild guess and assume the statement is that Jesus was an immigrant. Hey Lumpy, Jesus wasn’t white and didn’t speak English either.
I’ve never seen Lumpy object when Evangelical Churches compare having to live in a society where same sex marriage is legal to the Holocaust. Lumpy just can’t accept because he’s too theologically and intellectually bankrupt to see that the nativity story definitely can apply to how Trump and him treat immigrant kids.

The only thing worse is a violin. There’s a little peg inside that separates the top and bottom. If that slips even a little bit, it completely changes the sound. I didn’t know this and my middle son suffered for it. He could play well, but it was so quiet that he wasn’t getting chair positions. I didn’t find out until I bought him one - we were renting, and he’d had that one for a couple of years - and the sound was so loud. I partially blame the instructors for not figuring it out, since they were supposedly the experts.

Thank you. I think the biggest mistake parents and beginners make is buying on looks or trying to save a buck.
A decent digital kit can sound good with a powered monitor and sound decent because you can add some processing to the sound. The included speakers will sound like tin on asphalt.
And a GOOD wood starter set will set you back $1000 to $1500. The cheap ones are just junk wood with wrap on them. 2 wet summers later…..boink.
My drummers kit, which is his lowest level kit as it sits in my basement where we practice. The Evans kick head is $45 by itself.
Add it up.
I’m glad I could help you.

My “adopted son” is a very good drummer, and I can vouch for this. I helped him buy his current kit. He lost his precious crash cymbal in a windstorm this fall, and we couldn’t find a replacement at all. We had to buy a cheaper set of cymbals just to get some that would work together, and they are sure not what his others were. We’re on the lookout on ebay and will be for months, trying to find one.

I’m one of those who believes that part of childhood is exploring. I spend money when my kids get interested in something. Within reason. I don’t buy $1000 pieces of equipment that they’re not going to use. $300 is pushing it. Now, if they get interested, then I will move up.

Wait, whaaaat? Oh dear FSM, no, we tuned our own instruments and may God have mercy on your soul if you were the slightest bit out of tune. Our band instructor would take a 5-minute rant and then force the whole band to sit and wait for you to re-tune. Damn saxophones.
re: #363 Belafon
And therein lies the rub.
In most things musical you ultimately get what you pay for. There are good deals, and they come and go. As I suggested, if you know a guitar player get input from them before buying a guitar.
And so on. A drum kit is about 8 musical instruments with about 50 levels of quality.
Nite all.

LOL! Exactly! And in my band, it wasn’t the saxophones who were out of tune.
re: #289 Mattand
From experience, I can say electronic drums are much better for experimental, random noodling for beginners- for both the musician and the people around the musician.
Which, with drums is a pretty big concern.
(My experience being being a son who took drum lessons and had both.)
