John Oliver Digs Deep Into the Census, Featuring Census Man

John Oliver discusses the census, why it matters, and the consequences of an undercount.
Watched this earlier, and it’s really good reminder that our nation’s democracy and representative government is under assault from Trumpworld and the GOP in the most basic way - thwarting an accurate count means shifting balance of power for a decade or more (since last census helped cement power for the GOP, further undercounts can keep the GOP in power in places where they have no business being in power based on the actual demographics).

I am afraid that Trump is going to prevail on this because SCOTUS knows that releasing his returns would be political poison for the whole GOP.
According to this, it’s purely an administrative stay, so lawyers on both sides can file their respective paperwork.

The Court stayed the ruling pending filings by both sides.
I’m not surprised by this move, but it gives the Court the opportunity to issue a ruling. Had they declined to pick up the case, it would have required Mazars to hand over the tax records and financial papers.
The Roberts bench might still let Trump prevail on some bulkshit legal theory, but they’re at least going through the motions of giving both sides time to submit papers.

I honestly feel like he’s giving the entire genre a bum rap, which is somewhat ironic considering how seminal his contributions to it were.
The genre has issues, but both superheroes and the kind of mythology fueling “Birth of a Nation” is less about the latter inspiring the former and about both having a common inspiration in things like Greek and Roman myth, and ancient epics, where the idea of superhuman figures and demi-deities were rife. I mean, that opens up a whole different kettle of fish considering what was considered ‘heroic’ in those myths, but still.
And he seems to discount the idea of the genre ever transcending its roots, whatever you consider those roots to be. Again, an irony considering what he’s done for superheroes and comics in general. Just the idea of treating it as a static and forever stagnant thing seems to dismiss the possibilities of doing something more with superheoes as a framing device. If that were true, we might never have gotten the kinds of messages from X-Men as a civil rights allegory because comics would never have transcended the hardboiled Dick Tracy serials or flights of fancy that the golden age of comics provided.

Anime has its own issues, and keep in mind that Japan, as insular a nation as it can be, definitely took plenty of western influences to heart. Reminder that Anime codified much of its signature looks initially thanks to early legends like Osamu Tezuka taking inspiration from Disney shorts and features. And considering how many anime pastiches of comic icons such as Batman and Superman there have been, not to mention a tokusatsu adaptation of Spider-man that’s been popular in its own right, there’s been plenty of cross-pollination there to chew on.
As far as comics evolving or devolving far as things like portrayal of women, lets not forget how patriarchal a lot of early female comic portrayals were to begin with. And the 80s and 90s reflected quite a bit far as the edginess and love of anti-heroes that American media all over was embracing, with gratuitous cheesecake and beefcake included. Again, this is why I always recognize quite a lot of irony in what Moore says considering his contributions there, for good and for ill. And there’s definitely been steps to disavow that kind of edginess-for-edginess’s-sake school that defined a good bit of 80s/90s comic trends in the past decade or so. But as you and others have said, still a lot to be done. But I’d argue that a lot of that is just as reflected in other western media as it is in comics, all things considered.

re: #40 Charles Johnson
There are three choices for Israel/Palestine:
1. the two state solution
2. a single apartheid state where Israel exists as a Jewish state by denying rights to non-Jews
3. a single democratic pluralistic state that is neither Jewish nor Islamic (this would include some sort of confederated state)
Right now it looks like Option 2 is becoming the policy of the Trump Administration and has been the policy of Netanyahu’s various governments over the years.
re: #67 Hecuba’s daughter
It makes no sense, since Bibi’s not in a position to form a new govt. Ganz has his chance to form a govt without Bibi, which opens the door to Bibi’s indictment (along with his wife, who is already under indictment). This means the Palestinians have nothing to lose by stepping up fighting, and Israel no longer has the US around to be a neutral arbiter (or a “neutral” arbiter). It just means more chaos and a lack of understanding of the issues.
More conflict wont lead to a peaceful resolution here. It just means that the extremist factions in Israel will point to any hostility by Hamas or other terror groups as reason to build still more settlements, making a peace deal ultimately impossible.
Of course, there’s a religious component here too - Israel is a lynchpin in Evangelical End Times apocalyptic visions. More conflict would be to their favor/benefit - even if they’ll learn the hard way there’s no Rapture and they’re not going to heaven for fomenting violence and chaos via Trump.

MBS will be able to use it as a rallying cry/grievance if/when he’s ready to betray the US. Our friends the Saudis have been using it for decades to complain about us anyway, so won’t change much on that front.
Contractor accused of trafficking unauthorized workers faces trial
Case of Ricardo Batres marks the first time Hennepin County has charged someone with labor trafficking.
Labor-trafficking cases are rarely prosecuted in Minnesota, in part because they are difficult to prove. But Hennepin County prosecutors say they worked with Latino community leaders to help gather evidence.
The statute also took effect in 2005. According to the Minnesota Court Administrator’s Office, state prosecutors filed nine labor-trafficking charges over the past decade, including the charges against Batres. His case marks the first time Hennepin County has ever prosecuted someone under the statute.
The story notes the conditions and hardships that the workers had to endure. This Bartes guy is an asshole and I hope he’s found guilty and is sentenced meaningfully. I wish more employees were charged for this.

Occam’s Razor works here. The most likely explanation is that CBS got suckered by a not very good forger. No need for conspiracies.
“This is not how you plant something that you intend to use for political gain” cuts both ways. If you’re looking to take down Bush, you wouldn’t do it that clumsily, unless you’re an idiot - which may well be the case!
If you’re looking to discredit people trying to take down Bush, throwing these out there and seeing how far Confirmation Bias will take them is a cheap and easy way to at least drop chaff.
Till someone owns up to doing it, we’ll never know for sure. Personally, I find it easier to believe that someone put this out as a defense for Bush (because they could always anonymously debunk it, if nobody caught it) more believable than that it was intended to take Bush down.

re: #69 lawhawk
Won’t this interfere even further with the Ganz efforts which were probably doomed to failure anyway? Instead there will be new elections which may restore Netanyahu to power.

That was my conclusion, that this is an effort to put yet another thumb on the scale by A) undermining Ganz’s efforts and B) helping Bibi in the event of another election by driving up support for a “strong” gov’t centered around him.

IMHO, leaning on the “we can’t just leave this to the election” bit is the best strategy right now. Spelling out not only that Trump was attempting to corrupt those elections, but that just dropping impeachment in favor of “leaving it to the voters” would be a blow to Congressional oversight it may never overcome. A position that Trump did something that was not only wrong but criminal, but it’s not Congress’ job to hold him responsible would leave him open to royally fuck the country over such that he could just choose to ignore an electoral loss and remain in office.

Further weakens US standing in the region and around the world as a potential arbitrator. Potentially fucks with various US alliances in the region (while MBS probably doesn’t actually care about Palestine, other Arab leaders in the region probably do). Undermines US leadership on things like human rights and its leadership position in the Post War/Post Cold War world order.
So, yeah, in broad terms, it helps Putin.

Their biggest landmine in dealing with Vindman is he is the very thing they spent all last week insisting was the gold standard for testimony: He’s a first-hand witness to the call. So the best they can possibly hope to do is try to undermine his credibility, something that requires subtlety and preparation. But they’ve failed to show they’re capable of either of those things, so instead we’ll get the sledgehammer blows that will only further the reality that they’re scared of what he has to say.

Too much of a gamble at this point. Stone might get away with it as Trump could do it on the way out the door. But assuming Sondland lied/plead the fifth on Wednesday, the prosecution could just slow walk things in such a way that he’d be before a jury too late to hope for such a pardon. Given the seriousness of events, prosecutors probably won’t even bother offering a plea deal, given the track record of those who’ve lied to Congress.

One of the worst things about Vietnam is that it all seemed to make perfect sense as we were getting into it, given the generally accepted view of the political world at the time. The future of the whole world was going to be determined by the conflict between Communism and Freedom, and the Godless Communists would stop at nothing to win, so we couldn’t let them gain any more ground.
Plus Johnson was lied to by the Pentagon about how well we were doing, and whether we were on the verge of victory.
re: #51 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
true. but that technology was probably not known in the 1st century BC…
The grim reality of being a woman in pretty much any time, including today, is that Jesus could have been the product of a sexual assault. Which is my second thought as to what I think actually happened, after the most obvious, which is that Mary and Joseph got a jump start on the wedding night.
The thing we have to keep in mind is that Galatians, an authentic letter of Paul’s, has nothing to say about a virgin birth. In fact, Gal 4:4 says that Jesus was “born of a woman, born under the law.” Which excludes a lot of fancy thinking, in my mind, that Mary was a virgin, or that Mary herself was immaculately conceived. In fact, Paul didn’t *care* about Jesus’ birth. Neither did the writer of the Gospel of Mark, who just launches into John the Baptist and skips the whole infancy and childhood narratives.
I’m gonna be blunt and say that I believe the virgin birth idea is one of the worst things to come out of Christianity. It does nothing good for women at all. That’s because no other woman could be a virgin mother and give birth (at least before the late 1700s) without sex. It made sex dirty when it was wedded to original sin (no thanks to Augustine). The virgin birth is unhelpful as hell.

I always think of this scene from Snatch when it comes to the story of the virgin birth:
I suspect that most of the stories developed after the life of Jesus, and they pretty obviously borrowed from other ancient stories of gods and demigods. I’m generally of the opinion that he is either a completely mythological character, or an amalgamation of multiple preachers from the era.
Vietnam is one of those horrors of US foreign policy that only looks worse the further back you go.
Nixon made a total hash of things, but he was only working off the escalation that had started LBJ.
LBJ escalated the war largely because it was one of the few pieces of JFK’s foreign policy legacy that wasn’t totally blighted (at the time) by the shitshow that CIA “estimates.”
JFK went big on Vietnam because of said “estimates” leaving him cleaning up Eisenhower’s messes.
And Eisenhower got involved in Vietnam because the Soviets capitalized on the promises made by Truman and FDR to Uncle Ho to support Vietnamese independence in exchange for their help ejecting Japanese troops from Indochina during WWII.
And note that you could stretch things even further back to the smoking remains of WWI and the peace negotiations that took place among them, when Uncle Ho tried (and failed) to convince the Wilson administration to support Vietnamese independence.

wild ass pardoning is a hell of an admission

my head hurts just thinking about it

The only thing that might keep Sondland from rolling on Wednesday would be an explicit promise of a pardon. But given that this is the gang that couldn’t corrupt straight, it’s almost inevitable that such an promise would be made public. And for those taking notes at home, Donny has already been caught offering to pardon Cohen for lying to Congress. So even if he wasn’t caught red-handed doing the same again, it would be almost impossible for Sondland to either lie or plead the fifth on Wednesday and not immediately lead to investigations into whether a pardon had been offered.

i have no (ahem) dog in this fight so to be a wet blanket, this whole discussion is an explanation of the birth of a child.
it assumes these were in reality, fact and truth, actual specific individual people at all.
Also, this is what I was getting at on the last thread, when I talked about some believers trying to ‘explain’ miracles in non-miraculous ways. It strikes me as silly, because what’s the point of arguing for a non-miraculous explanation? An easier non-miraculous explanation is somebody made it up, as you suggest.
You can believe in the divinity of Jesus without having to buy into the miracles. You can buy into the philosophy of making Earth like the Kingdom of Heaven without believing in the divinity of Jesus.
re: #155 Targetpractice
The only thing that might keep Sondland from rolling on Wednesday would be an explicit promise of a pardon. But given that this is the gang that couldn’t corrupt straight, it’s almost inevitable that such an promise would be made public. And that would pretty much be the nail in the coffin, not only of Donny’s presidency, but any hope the GOP have of avoiding a total bloodbath next November.
i dont think sondland’s that good of an actor/diplomat. he doesnt have the skills.

re: #132 KGxvi
Nixon inherited Vietnam (not that he didn’t have his own fuck ups in that war). It was JFK and LBJ that led us into that disaster.
Right, but Nixon and Henry Kissinger extended the war for political gain, by sabotaging the 1968 peace negotiations during his presidential campaign, even as he publicly said he was against the war. It’s as much Nixon’s folly as anyone else’s.

I think the wrongness of that “generally accepted view” was apparent pretty early on; that was the whole couldn’t-publically-explain reason behind Ike’s warning about the military industrial complex. (all the evidence was classified, if he shared it sources and methods would have been compromised)

I’d say that up till 1968, the generally accepted view was that the generally accepted view was correct.
I mean clearly as you go from 1965 to 1969, there’s a big drop over time in how many people thought the whole thing was justified, but it took time to get there. Time, and television, and dead young men that everyone in town knew, and struggled to find a believable justification for.
I hope when pig President is gone we go in and blow those bases to rubble.

Lawsuit could purge 234,000 names from Wisconsin voter rolls
More than 234,000 voters in Wisconsin would be made unable to cast their ballot unless they register again before the next election under a lawsuit filed Wednesday that liberals fear could dampen turnout among Democrats in the 2020 presidential race.

Every once in awhile I’ll stumble across online discussions of Vietnam and at least one tough guy will talk about how we’d have won if the military hadn’t been shackled by politicians and betrayed by hippies and the media. I have to laugh. To Ho Chi Minh and his supporters, communism was just a more honest approach to Wilson’s call for self-determination of peoples—it was always about independence from foreign control and interference first and foremost. There is no way to properly define “win” under those circumstances. It would be a forever war.

oh exactly
If an entity, even a God, can “break” the natural laws (physics) at will, and in fact does repeatedly, ie whenever a prayer is answered or a miracle has occurred, what law is being “violated”? God is not speeding. God is simply using an obviously available mechanism over and over. We just don’t know what it is.
I conclude that therefore this is not a thing. it’s a subset of “we do not know everything.”
re: #219 Belafon
Also:
But in the lawsuit, WILL contends that registering again is “no hardship” because voters can do it at the polls on election day. Voters must present a photo ID and proof of residence in order to register at the polls.
Democrats also need to spend money telling people all they have to do is show up to vote.

Eventually I turned on the electric piano just to see what was happening with the chords, and at the end of the section I mentioned, the piano was OUT OF TUNE with the track, by about a quarter tone!— Charles Johnson (@Green_Footballs) November 18, 2019
The really amazing part is that he completely disguises this quarter tone modulation with the way he layers the voices and effects, so that you never notice it actually happening - and it would normally be VERY noticeable.
— Charles Johnson (@Green_Footballs) November 18, 2019
It’s not just a theoretical experiment; the semi-modulation unmistakably gives the music a big lift at that point. Really an amazing musical feat.

Yeah. I do like their breakfast okay enough but McDonalds has the same fried chicken biscuit for breakfast now I believe.
re: #253 KGxvi
So like the Taco Bell of the fast food fried chicken places?
I would rank their chicken above McDonalds, Wendy’s, and a lot of other fast food places. What really kills their sandwiches is, by default, the bun is bland and they put a pickle on it. If you can get near one, get an eight piece nugget, not the grilled, and try it.
Really, the underlying anger towards CFA by wingnuts is the recognition that the chain is not going to win in a highly-competitive market with a “take-it-or-leave-it” attitude. It needs to expand and find more reliable markets, but that’s clashing with the reality that fighting against political barriers to such is an expensive and ultimately detrimental position. But any sort of concession to that political reality is seen as “submission” by the wingnut faithful, who think the ideal example is Hobby Lobby flipping off the Feds and spending millions fighting all the way to the SCOTUS bench.

Popeye’s has started offering chicken sandwiches, and it seems they are to die for.
re: #252 Yeah Sure WhatEVs
Could be.
KFC is better and pretty ubiquitous. Popeyes is better, too. We actually now have one here, but they’re not as available as KFC. Down south there may be more CFA than Popeyes but likely not as many as KFC.
Taste is personal, though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yeah, I just check their locations on Google Maps, and none are in reasonable ‘fast food’ driving distance from me. There is one practically a “stones throw” from me, but, it’s in the middle of Jacksonville University’s campus. Which is a closed campus.

I like Del Taco better for drive thru Mexican. But growing up in Southern California, I’m a bit spoiled when it comes to Mexican food, even fast Mexican.
But of course, to each their own.

Popeye’s has started offering chicken sandwiches, and it seems they are to die for.
When we moved to our new facility two years ago, the Popeyes they were putting in down the street from out old place (like 1/2 mile) hadn’t opened yet. Where we are now is kind of a fast food desert.
re: #259 Belafon
I would rank their chicken above McDonalds, Wendy’s, and a lot of other fast food places. What really kills their sandwiches is, by default, the bun is bland and they put a pickle on it. If you can get near one, get an eight piece nugget, not the grilled, and try it.
Yeah the pickle is annoying. I wish they did the nuggets/tenders in the buffalo style like they do with the sandwich tho.
re: #248 Targetpractice
Yeah, CFA is one of those “For lack of better options” chains.
There is one CFA in town, I don’t go there very often because the drive through line usually wraps around the building at lunch and dinner time and there is a Wendy’s right next door that usually has no wait.
The sandwiches are pretty good for fast food, I like them better than pop-eyes. Not worth waiting for though.
re: #236 Belafon
To put it another way: Why should they get to own them?
More for my personal thesaurus and because I like to also not PO people like mmmirele.

According to wikipedia, Popeyes has about 750 more locations than CFA (3100 vs 2400 or so). Both founded/based out of the south.
That makes me think that CFA lost major market share over the recent chicken sandwich war between them and Popeyes after Popeyes Chicken sandwiches sold out repeatedly.
From Business Insider:
Chick-fil-A - which became the third-largest chain in the US by sales in 2018, despite having far fewer locations than most of its rivals - has seen incredible success with its chicken sandwich …

Fucking nut jobs using Israel to fulfill their sick fantasies.
When I moved to CA, I liked Taco Bell. Then I found a couple real taquerias, and now TB would have to be literally the only place open when I was fainting of hunger for me to go there.
BUT, I do have a story about going to one back in the 80s. They’d just released their “Steak Fajita Burrito”, and I dropped by and bought at least one. While I was eating, the guy who’d been behind me in line, and had ordered the same thing, went back to the counter and loudly protested that what he’d received looked nothing like the beautiful, professionally photographed image on the sign.
The counter guy really didn’t know what to say. Neither did the manager. I mean, what did the guy expect for $2.99 at Taco Bell?

Hence my remark earlier about “for lack of a better option” chain. While other chains have offered chicken sandwiches, they either were more expensive or less desirable than CFA’s. But now Popeyes put their own out and it’s been such a success that most people who seem to be sticking with CFA are doing so either out of loyalty or “for lack of better options.”
re: #275 The Pie Overlord!
The theocrats are becoming more powerful.
re: #260 Targetpractice
Really, the underlying anger towards CFA by wingnuts is the recognition that the chain is not going to win in a highly-competitive market with a “take-it-or-leave-it” attitude. It needs to expand and find more reliable markets, but that’s clashing with the reality that fighting against political barriers to such is an expensive and ultimately detrimental position. But any sort of concession to that political reality is seen as “submission” by the wingnut faithful, who think the ideal example is Hobby Lobby flipping off the Feds and spending millions fighting all the way to the SCOTUS bench.
CFA opened in the UK and closed like 4 months later. They had daily anti-hate protests at their new stores.
They have a hard time in New markets when they support hate, hence what’s happening now.
I don’t know if it’ll help then, honestly. A lot of people have long memories and hating on gay kids isn’t a good look.
Our town could support a second Chick-fil-A, and the company did put in to build a drive-through only store, but the city council shot that one down.

Yeah, most burger chains have (at the least) a chicken sandwich if not a fish sandwich because they don’t want to lose sales to other chains who have those items for the people in a crowd who might not want a burger today. But the flip side is they take it on sufferance, as they know they’re not going to get all that many sales for their chicken sandwiches and so the ones available tend to have been sitting in a warmer for awhile.

There’s a strict liability argument for racist statements, I think. Along the lines of “it doesn’t matter what your intent was, or what you ‘feel’, if the result is racist shit, that’s all that matters.” Which would be a decent way to follow “I don’t know if he’s racist…” The problem is, most of these people that want to absolve Trump just want to absolve him. Because to admit that he is racist, either intentionally or via strict liability, is to admit that a large portion of American voters knowingly and enthusiastically voted for a racist

It’s kind of the same thing as asking whether he’s lying when he tells lies. That is, if he really believes it, even though it’s not true and he’s been told repeatedly it’s not true, if he believes it’s true, is it still lying?
I mean, honestly to me it’s worst if he’s not lying but rather telling lies that he believes are true, because what it means is that he is disconnected from reality and really only believes what he wants to believe, and/or thinks that if he believes it, it must be true, or it BECOMES true. The thing is, he’s been shielded from the consequences of believing his own bullshit for his whole life, so why WOULDN’T he think that his believing something makes it so?

Vegas used to have a tradition of inexpensive steakhouses and/or buffets where you could get surf n turf for like $9.99 or some such. But those have started to go the way of the dinosaur.
re: #360 KGxvi
I prefer hash browns, but potatoes definitely work too. There’s a super local chain in Long Beach (Hole Mole for those in the area) that will do their breakfast burritos Cali style (fries as the potato).
Anita’s does here. Southwestern/Central American is my favorite breakfast.
re: #349 KGxvi
I think the key to tuna steaks is super hot grill, and quick searing
Learned on Kwajalein.
1) Know the guy who caught the tuna that afternoon.
2) Marinade in soy and lime juice 1 hour. Splash of tequila helps.
3) 1 inch thick.
4) Hot grill, 3-4 minutes.

They were probably trying to compete with the casinos, but the casinos can get away with it because they make so much money in their normal course of business. They probably take a loss on food, if I had to guess.

A lot of them were in casinos, particularly the buffets. Probably lost leaders back in the day, especially with comps. But that town has changed so much in the last 30 years, it shouldn’t be a surprise. And now it’s becoming something of a food destination even off the strip.

Every casino back in the day would have a buffet, a diner, and a steakhouse of some sort. In the 90s it started to change, where they started bringing in outside places. Some place would have mall style food courts, others would go with a branded diner type place.
Now it kind of depends on which casino you’re at. A lot of places have celebrity chef restaurants - Gordan Ramsay has a place a Caesars and Planet Hollywood; David Chang has a place there now too but I forget where.
And it’s not like they half ass it either. The Ramsay burger place at Planet Hollywood might have one of the three or four best burgers I’ve ever ate.

Wait. Where is this recipe for home mode gyros?
I used several actually. The spices differed. So I looked at like 10 top rated recipes, used spices from several including cumin, cardimom and loads of garlic and salt (and more actually). I spice processed the spices to a powder and address it to the meat. The key is to food process the shit out of the meat until it’s a paste, then hard pack it into a baking dish.
It was really easy and on par with what I’ve gotten in restaurants.
I saved the recipe so I don’t have the URL. But I basically blended the meat, put it in a meatloaf pan and cooked it straight away.
If you follow this recipe, triple the salt and garlic otherwise it’s not enough. And add a scant Teaspoon (no more!) of cardimom.

by then it’s likely too late for him
if the senate trial is going against him, everyone’s testified, or admitted, or somethingwild ass pardoning is a hell of an admission
and if he pardons everyone involved in this conspiracy we’re back to “can a president pardon himself and/or other people involved in a (criminal) conspiracy with him”
and further, if more info comes out re Russian and 2016 and any trump involvement - ie mueller et al, then the question becomes ‘can a president use the pardon power to pardon himself for crimes committed to gain the office and the pardon power”
my head hurts just thinking about it
The constitution explicitly says that the President has no power to grant pardons in cases of impeachment. So at least if he is impeached, he cannot use pardon power to escape removal from office.

Amanda Kondrat’yev was sentenced to 15 days in jail and a $500 fine for throwing a slushie at Matt Gaetz on June 1.
Her attorney had a few things to say about Rep. Gaetz:
“For him to talk about a violent crime, it’s not as violent as a potential DUI is to drivers on the road,” Stevenson said, referring to Gaetz’s 2008 arrest in Okaloosa County on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol (charges were later dropped). “It’s not as much of a threat to our national security as storming a security hearing with a cellphone in a room that doesn’t allow cellphones. It doesn’t jeopardize our rule of law as much as intimidating witnesses, and it’s not as severe as threatening to unleash violent supporters if you don’t get what you want.
“I wish that he could have shown (Kondrat’yev) some Christian justice or mercy,” Stevenson added.
Amanda has two special-needs children and is separated from her husband right now. I’m not sure who will be caring for the kids while she’s in jail. This is so stupid.

Fresh out of high school Charlie wrote a Breitbart column/oped. Don’t know how he got in must be family. In a short period of time he talked Foster Friess into giving him $5m to start Talking Point USA to make conservatism hip.
He’s never had a real job. But the most damaging info on him:

Like so many right wing social influencers like him, I’m amused by people like him who mock working people’s work ethic when these guys are propagandists. If Charlie ever actually had to work a honest day, he’d go crazy since he doesn’t know the meaning of honest work.
I mean for all the talk about left wing brainwashing. I give you Charlie Kirk, Ben Shapiro, Candice Owens, and hte countless other right wingers who are nothing but shills who know nothing about anything except lame right wing talking points.

Exactly what my brother keeps on saying!! So a new definite date that the Democrats are going down!! And as accurate as the last one!! (about 6 weeks after the date my brother originally claimed).

Slugs of that sort (Ragefurby, Daladein, O’Keefe, Shapiro) give value for monies expended. Look into the Leadership Institute to see some of the pathways.

Sometimes, nobody can see what the problem is, till someone does, then nobody can unsee it.
And they went out of state to find an agency that sells itself with corny shit like
“the status of your business should never be quo”
and introduces their portfolio with “work that works”
(I have spent 40+ years in advertising creative and that crap would get you laughed out of most pitches)

Can’t remember the name of the annual advertising “oscar” but, to get qualified in the TV category, your ad must show at least once. Sometime in the 70s, Melvin van Peebles got a station to run his ad at some god-awful hour:
“Use Preparation H and kiss your hemorrhoids goodbye.”

I HATE HATE HATE that word Influencers. Abs the concept, too.

I hate it too. After reading about the alt-right, I need a bath. Surprisingly TP-USA didn’t make it into the book.
Holmes overheard a July 26 call between Trump and Sondland, in which Trump asked if Zelensky committed to ‘do the investigation.’
Sondland then told Holmes Trump didn’t care about Ukraine, only his personal interests.

National are the Clios (local are usually Addys). Love that story! (Reminds me of the ad campaign on Kimmie Schmidt—You go girl! for bladder control)

It’s completely in line with how Trump has acted throughout.

Then that’s what Biden should have said. It seems like Biden’s policy is independent of Biden himself.

Make that Putney Swope, not Melvin van Peebles, doing the Prep H ad.
re: #477 Yeah Sure WhatEVs
As I suspected, the more juicy bit got the news. I support federal legalization but that’s not going to happen just like that and I would hope that Congress could pass that and perhaps that would make Joe reconsider. I didn’t like that he said Gateway drug though.

Robert Downey, Sr. My Dad’s quoted Putney Swope with me before. Still need to see it.
How does @michellemalkin get a conservative platform? She is a dummy—just look at her past.

Putney Swope—one of my favorite movies of all time!
re: #482 HappyWarrior
re: #484 BeachDem
The Prep H ad was real—part of Downey Sr’s experience.
Downey drew on his own personal experiences as a disgruntled ad executive when making Putney Swope; Downey made a Preparation H commercial where a Chinese woman says, “No matter what your ethnic affliction, use Preparation H and kiss your hemorrhoids goodbye!” As Koresky points out, that commercial was rejected in real life — but it is featured in No More Excuses.
Don’t kid yourselves, folks. Hannity will no doubt use the Lewandowski defense of “I have no obligation to tell the truth to the press.” https://t.co/JFlup0uNvY

Been awhile since I’ve seen the movie—it was just so bold and stark! Had friends who named their dog Putney, but only a few of us got the connection.
I think spending most of my adult life in advertising, and my father having been in promotion and PR, I couldn’t get the appeal of Mad Men. Watched the first few episodes, then felt like “been there; done that; got the tee-shirt.”

I don’t think they do. They still have their ‘classic chicken sandwich’ (which the parm was a derivative of) but think the parm is gone. They were pretty good ‘drunk food’
Jack-in-the-Box super taco was my drunk food. Hot sauce on that greasy sucker was great at 2:30 am.

BK’s current offering of $1 Tacos are the illegitimate siblings of the Jack-in-the-Box tacos. They even retain the greased soaked through shells that somehow manage to maintain a level of rigidity
re: #343 Yeah Sure WhatEVs
Has anyone made tuna steaks at home where they didn’t suck? What did you do? Mine always are ghastly.
I’ve never cooked a tuna steak, but I ate some great ones.
My friend mixed up the marinade the night before, took a thermos-ful out on the boat with him, cleaned and boned the tuna within minutes of catching it, put slabs into a Tupperware with the marinade… and called me from the dock to fire up the grill.
Those tuna steaks were EXCELLENT. They key is that they were less than 5 hours from swimming. Taste and texture were both superior to anything I’ve gotten at a restaurant. (the marinade was a mix of that dipping sauce Thai restaurants use for spring rolls, Mexican molé sauce, and fresh-squeezed orange juice).

There were some complaints as well that they weren’t using vegan buns for the impossible burgers.
I keep meaning to try a beyond or impossible burger, but I think if I did it, I’d want to cook it myself.
My youngest tried one. He didn’t think it was good at all. But he is not a vegan or vegetarian, so that could cloud things in his perception of the taste.

All they claimed was that the meat was made from plants. They never called the burger a vegetarian burger.
On a cow the meat is made with plants too.
