Greenwald tweeted:
Nelson Mandela: a noble reminder that those declared “criminals” by an unjust society are often the most just.
Those declared criminals are MOST often actual criminals. SOMETIMES, they’re not. Even unjust societies have more murderers and thieves than they do unjustly persecuted heroes, and if he’s calling us an unjust society - as compared to Snowden’s new home - he can go fuck himself.
Greenwald’s little platitude is like the people who say that AGW deniers should be respected because “They laughed at Galileo, too!” Maybe so, but by and large the people whom Science laughed at historically were wildly wrong, so being laughed at doesn’t mean you AREN’T full of shit, and indeed suggests that you probably are.
There. I’m done.

Here’s another - someone who actually did eat the stuff!
Accused, Yes, but Probably Not a Killer
Many handbooks of poisonous plants cite the tomato plant for killing livestock and sickening people. According to the California Poison Control System’s “Poisoning and Drug Overdose,” edited by Kent R. Olson (McGraw-Hill, 2006), the tomato toxin is solanine, one of two alkaloids that make greened potatoes toxic. High doses of solanine kill animals and cause nausea, hallucinations and death in humans.
Sounds pretty damning. But there’s scant evidence for tomato toxicity in the medical and veterinary literature. I found just one medical case, an undocumented reference to children having been made sick by tomato-leaf tea, in a 1974 book on poisonous plants. In contrast to the few anecdotal accounts of livestock poisoning, a controlled study in Israel in 1996 showed no ill effects when cattle ate tomato vines for 42 days.
And it’s a chemical gaffe to attribute tomato toxicity to solanine. Dr. Mendel Friedman of the federal Department of Agriculture, who has studied potato and tomato alkaloids for two decades, wrote in an e-mail message that commercial tomatoes contain tomatine. Solanine, he added, is a potato alkaloid.

This bit about tomato plants brings back a close-call memory. At the art college I went to during my freshman year I had a new roommate move in after semester break. He was older, I was 18, he probably 25 and considered a freshman by the school. Anyway, we all partied, but this guy was just a little bit more than a showboat and quite full of himself.
One weekend, unbeknownst to me, he had apparently sold a small quantity of the weed to an undercover guy at a damn fast food restaurant down near the Ohio States campus. I never dealt anything, but damn, I think I would have known that you don’t just sell something illegal to someone coming up to you because you look freaky standing in a fast food line. An original Duh!
Anyway, two weeks later, apparently after getting an arrest warrant, the cops come to our damn “dorm” (old apartment buildings) and arrested the idiot. I was freaking terrified and explained this guy just moved in a few weeks ago and is just a roommate assigned by the school. They of course had to snoop everywhere and ask me all kinds of shit, but I knew I was good.
As they were leaving, they happened to see this little tiny glass picture frame hanging on the wall by the bathroom door. In it was a little tiny “joint” and a card that read in presstype rub off Break In Case Of Emergency that idiot boy had made.
“We’ll just take this” they said and asked me did I know that was there. I said yeah, but I think its a joke, not real. The one cop looked at it, said it looked like a dry leafy substance to him and they would have to check it out. They may need to talk to me later. Huff ‘n’ Puff! We gots our eye on you boy.
It was oregano! I hope they made a nice pasta sauce with some of it. or knowing the Columbus cops, they probably smoked it on the way back to the sub station and got sick doing it.
Ahh…youth. And damn luck sometimes. I have some stories about those crazy art school days.

History is a strange beast. I’d bet the price of a 5 star dinner that if a truly excellent ethical respected journalist had outed PRISM, the effort to curb or remove the Patriot Act and programs like PRISM at NSA would have had far more success.
Let’s go by analogy. Greenwald/Snowden have managed to so poison the atmosphere of debate tat they hurt their own said cause. Which is truly a shame. And odd, maybe.
When I think of animals and animal cruelty at labs, or fur coats, I feel the same anger and sadness at that situation despite the actions of PETA, whom I truly detest. I have exactly the same amount of concern for global climate change despite eco terrorism like Hummer dealer vandalism and housing development arson.
Why in this arena (NSA powers) do the over the top advocates do so much damage to the dialog as compared to these other subjects?

Greenwald has to be the ONLY person on twitter who has said something controversial after the death of Nelson Mandela. The man who led his country to universal freedom without the violence of a civil war is equated by Greenwald to a man who fled his country to avoid arrest for stealing from his employer.
There are no words - Mandela would shrug.

Hearing more than one wingnut now taking the line that no doubt will be on Limbaugh’s lips tomorrow: “Apartheid was gonna fall, Mandela had nothing to do with it!” And that may very well be true, but it’s a half-truth at best. The reality likely would have been that, in absence of Mandela, apartheid would have ended with a violent and bloody revolution. There would have been no negotiated end, no unified elections that put a cool-headed and even-handed man in office. Just a lot of shooting, piles of bodies, and a new leader who likely would have follow Mugabe’s footsteps in “punishing” the Afrikaners in the most inhumane fashion possible.

Lots of people, myself included, are more of the mindset “do not allow a defeated enemy stalwart to live”, It guarantees a bloodbath, but its the tactic seen more often because most revolutionary leaders lack Mandela’s qualities of inspiration, are too full of rage or paranoia to imagine reconciliation, or actually want purges and hatred as a way to keep people in a state of ‘fervor’.

Dark, hopefully you see this: most people aren’t like Nelson Mandela. Really, we’re not. We’re all just human.
The thing is, every day, you have the chance to make a choice. It’s really easy to say “oh, that’s not who I am, that’s not what my gut reaction is, and so I can’t do that.”
It can be really, really hard to say “this is who I want to be and I need to change to get there, so I’m going to try to live along the lines of the person I want to be.”
God knows, I’ve fucked it up all over the place. But every day, I get the opportunity to get up and make that choice, and most days, I’d like to think I try to make the decision to live a little closer to the person I want to be instead of the person my laziness/fear/inertia/whatever wants to encourage.
Just food for thought.

Then, The Name of the Doctor. It dragged me out of what had been by that point been a 22-month long depression. I’m better, albeit I know I am still a mess in someways.

Started watching myself back when Syfy started showing the first season, ages ago. Knew nothing about the series, had mostly forgotten the TV movie because it had been so long, but almost immediately found I liked the Ninth Doctor and found the series as a whole so fun to watch. Every living past Doctor has. Hell, Tom Baker and McGann were even in a handful were in the Day of the Doctor and the Night of the Doctor respectively.
It made me curious to about the 8th Doctor’s Audio Stories. Paul McGann seems seriously underrated for me.
Also, Paul McGann looks awesome for being 54. If I can age as well as he has, I will be a happy man.
Yeah, my understanding is that Doctor Who’s one of those series which has a lot of background politics. I don’t really hold it against Eccleston that he didn’t show up for the 50th, he had his reasons for not wanting to come back to the franchise. Think in some ways it was poorer for it, but ultimately the final product was excellent.
And you’re right about McGann, when I saw Night, I was shocked by how much he still looks like he did back in the TV movie. If he’d still been dressed up like a Victorian fop, it would have been like some lost episode that they’d just unearthed recently. The Eighth was one of those who really deserved to have more time on the air than he did, but I’m glad he at least got proper treatment in the expanded universe.

Last year they were running a Mustang ad that I thought was kinda lame. It showed various people dreaming of their fantasy Mustang: girl in red boots, biker in green shirt, food service worker with tattoos, and little girl in ballerina costume.
They totally forgot to include the little old lady in a blue hat, the only one who could actually go into a dealership and drive out in a fantasy Mustang.
I mentioned this to some co-workers but I don’t know if it made it up the food chain.
Anyway I’m looking at the Escape or the Edge for my next lease.

Greenwald and Wikileaks are both not above making Mandela’s death all about them and their pet interests.
Mandela is someone with whom they have absolutely nothing in common with.
Mandela was more than willing to go to prison for his beliefs, and when he came out the other side, he emerged with even more grace and a belief in justice and equality than before. He sought truth and reconciliation, rather than retribution. He oversaw the transition from apartheid to a representative democracy.
What has Greenwald, Wikileaks, and the criminal Snowden done? Undermine US national security at every opportunity. Check.
Flee the US by going to countries that would benefit from knowing what was within the Snowden files? Check.
Seek asylum in Russia? Check.
Refuse to answer for his crimes - the theft of classified intel, means, and methods. Check.
Steal classified intel by taking the IDs of others so as to get intel above his classification level? Check.

Figures, I watch The Day of the Doctor and now have to contend with the compulsion to catch up on the series.
It’s a compulsion best scratched. From the first Christopher Eccleston episode through “The Day of The Doctor,” almost every episode is wildly entertaining and there are at least a half-dozen or so that are absolutely terrific. I’ve watched ‘em all twice now, and while I didn’t care much at all for the farting aliens, there was only one episode that I hated (“Love & Monsters”). “Midnight” ranks among the best one-hour science fiction episodes I’ve ever seen.
Incidentally, I read there’s now talk about a big screen Doctor Who. It seems that “Day of The Doctor” did pretty decent business with its recent (one night?) movie theater release, grossing some $10 million that included nearly $5 million in the U.S. alone. It was #2 for the day after “Catching Fire.”

Hey Ricky…by a clue!!!
Regarding Santorum, I came across this little bit on Wikipedia while reading up on 90’s Pittsburgh politics. From the Bob Cramner* wikipedia page:
The Teresa Heinz - Rick Santorum Controversy
In 1994, he was elected Chairman of the Republican Party of Allegheny County. In October of that year Cranmer again gained the national spotlight when Teresa Heinz, the wife of the late Senator John Heinz, a Republican, and later wife of presidential candidate John Kerry, publicly endorsed Democratic incumbent Senator Harris Wofford, who had been appointed to the seat by Governor Bob Casey following her husband’s death. She called the Republican candidate, Congressman Rick Santorum, “Forrest Gump with an attitude” and labeled him much too conservative for Pennsylvania. The same day that her endorsement made the Pennsylvania newspapers Cranmer issued a press release which included a letter from him to Mrs. Heinz (who was, at that time, a registered Republican), asking her to change her voter registration to the Democratic Party; he also included a voter registration form. Cranmer’s letter helped him gain notoriety, as it was seen as emblematic of the betrayal felt by State Republicans.
*- Bob Cramner was the GOP member of the Allegheny County Commissioners and quite influential in local politics at that time.

Good news this morning as 203,000 jobs were added in November and the unemployment rate dropped to 7% even as the labor forced increased. The alternative unemployment rate which includes underemployed and discouraged workers also dropped sharply from 13.8% to 13.2%, and all this happened due to private sector job creation, as federal government employment dropped by another 7,000, and has dropped 92,000 over the last twelve months. Employment has grown by more than 200,000 jobs in three of the last four months, and averaged 195,000 per month this year, despite federal government austerity, even while the inflation rate has remained extremely low.

Have you ever noticed all of the SUVs (and some other cars, especially rear wheel drive) that find themselves off the road and down in the culvert or up against a fence on the inside of a turn, especially on ramps?
A big SUV in 4 wheel drive tends to pull ( power-oversteer) off the inside of the road and then the traction hooks up and drives them right off the road and down the embankment.
The other big thing is, many people do not realize sometimes you have three options: 1. on the gas…2. brake…3. off the gas and brake to coast and regain control or to allow momentum. I think many a driver fails to understand #3. And that is all conditions. Brake tappers…arrrgh!

Indeed, all the positive news coming from the economy is actually causing Wall Street to get the jitters over the past week (losses for most of the week) that the Fed’s economic policies may start wrapping up, reducing their effect on pumping up Wall Street’s most impressive performance this year (DJIA up 22% to record levels, S&P 500 - up 26%, Russell 2000 up 33%).
It further indicates that what’s good for the economy isn’t always what’s best for Wall Street, or vice versa. It’s a disconnect that people can’t always wrap their head around.

Nice car! Aren’t dedicated winter tires great! I try to tell people all weather tires usually mean not too good in any weather.
I run Dunlop Winter Sport series on factory metal wheels. They aren’t as radical as a Bridgestone Blizzack which are really ice tires. They are more of a narrow, deep grooved snow tire. And their best feature…still good handling on dry pavement for a winter tire…thus their “sport” designation.
In spring I put on my Continental Extreme Contact DW (Dry/Wet) tires with aluminum MSW wheels.
I have a ‘08 Bunny with the 2.5 gas and the 5-speed. It’s in the body shop getting a new rear bumper and a new hatch…some guy backed into it while it was parked at my local Kroger store a few weeks back to the tune of $2500 damage. We have to distinguish between labor as a commodity and labor as a human state, one that confers not only a wage, but a standard of dignity and self-respect upon the worker.
Part of that dignity is the ability to live off one’s wages.
That is something that is totally lost to the hard-core Free Marketeers out there.

Greenwald’s sense of journalism is kinda hazy. He thinks the US media is going to gloss over Mandela’s legacy.
Excellent RT @BuzzFeedAndrew 7 Nelson Mandela Quotes You Probably Won’t See In The U.S. Media http://t.co/pXsJK4qABQ— Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) December 6, 2013
Except that they’re not.The quotes and news reports are easily found in the US media, and a Google search indicates as much.
It’s much more nuanced than Greenwald’s take.
Mandela opposed the Iraq War (as did a whole lot of Americans).
Mandela found fault with income inequality and racism, including here in the US (again, as do a significant number of Americans).
Mandela cozied up with folks that the US considered enemies (Castro being but one).
Mandela also didn’t like the fact that the US considered OBL an enemy and did so without due process (except that OBL declared war on the US, and the US responded in kind, so his objections here do lack merit).
The NYT has a wide range of coverage, including how Mandela failed his country by ignoring the AIDS epidemic that swept across his country, and which his successor actively denied was occurring, but later turned to being an advocate for AIDS awareness and treatment options.

You see, there was a time when “real jobs” meant some sort of (unionized) job in manufacturing, McD and the like were just seen as temporary foot-in-the-door jobs for young people…
Those days are long gone, McD is often all there is for a lot of people.

Ladies (and gentlemen that never learned)…you too can drive a manual transmission.
It is fun and makes you more a part of the car. May I suggest starting with a small VW or small Ford like a Focus. They are so easy to ‘clutch’ you can almost pop it and it will still catch and take off. To me small cars and engines are so easy to clutch as the engine revs and the clutch take up are almost matched without even hitting much gas. Modern computer control is so good anymore…it has improved everything so much.
And a side benefit for everyone…you can’t drive a manual and do any of that dangerous stuff like talk or text, eat or apply makeup and fuss with your hair.
And no…I am not saying all women do any of the above…just the ones you see doing it…and the men doing it too. Win win!

In and Out pays a substantially better wage, and they make what’s generally regarded as a better product, all while competing in the same market space as McDonalds.
At the same time, In and Out does quite well (as a private company, it’s not required to post profits or revenue statements), having grown to 291 locations and over 10,000 employees.

Batkid is already paying it forward. He’s helping to raise donations to help other kids get their wishes made.
Now, Miles is helping the police officers realize their goal to raise $75,000 to help grant wishes for 357 children with life-threatening medical conditions. Organizers are hoping to help 10 children on Saturday alone.
The police-run Brave the Bay, now in its 6th year, features a 5K Santa Walk/Fun Run, a Santa plunge in the bay and the Santa Car Pull. Participants can join in either one event or all three to complete the “Santa Triathlon. Each event costs between $25 or $60 for all three.
Miles’ parents, Nick and Natalie Scott, said in a statement that it seemed “only fitting that following a day when the world demonstrated caring and compassion for Batkid, Batkid can now help others.”
Damn… I have something in my eye.

The point is that Nelson Mandela was a real person living in a world that is full of nuances, one that has changed a lot since he was politically active.
None of this is well handled in the Twitterverse or in the nuance-free ideological bubble that makes up a great deal of modern political “discourse” (i.e. shouting people down who disagree with you)

Yes, the new Beetle is nice, not as cute. The interior is great. Whoever did the interior layout deserves a design award.
I had a ‘99 GTi that I got all the way to 184,000 miles before I bought the bunny. One brake change, one catalytic converter (they had issues on the Mark 4s when they came out) one engine crank timing sensor, a little weld repair to the original exhaust and a new gear shift cable…the original frayed where it hits the shifter. That’s it. Never gave me any real trouble and the paint still looked great. It was getting to the point though, it was going to need wheel bearings and suspension bushings…so I traded it in.
I went with the 5-cylinder 2.5 20 valve Rabbit because I needed to save some money on car payments, and they sort of took me back to the days of American performance cars. Lightweight, not a lot of stuff like leather and sunroof on it and its zero-to-60 was 7.3 seconds compared to the 7.0 on the GTi. And it was 16,500 at zero APR, where the GTi at that time was 25,000. I have not regretted the decision one bit. It’s a sleeper, doesn’t say “ticket me…but racer” and I can still give a lot of cars hell on acceleration and in handling.
Since you seem to know you Dubs…did you know the 2.5 is exactly one half of the V-10 found in the Lamborghini Gallardo? As soon as an Audi/VW nut told me that I was sold.

McDonald’s needs to separate its advice website into three sections to avoid such embarrassment:
1. The 47%, For people actually working in the restaurants who are not the location’s chief manager. This would feature advice on how to scrip by and avoid tips while hosting a Union Thug Attack of the Month column as well.
2. The 52%, for store manages and most of those who work at corporate HQ and the offices of larger franchises. This would have a tipping page with some of the ‘rich people’ stuff deleted, and would also host tips for holiday decorating.
3. The 1%, with a full tipping guide, including the chauffeur, and some lovely holiday baking ideas from Anne Romney.

[…]The medical teletherapy device had been inside a steel-reinforced wooden box, but the protective container was opened and the radioactive waste was separated from the equipment in the town of Hueypoxtla, 70 kilometers (43 miles) north of the capital.
The dangerous material was found about one kilometer (0.6 miles) from the truck, which the driver said was stolen by two gunmen at a service station on Monday.
The National Commission for Nuclear Safety and Safeguards (CNSNS) said a family found the open medical device and brought it inside their home. They were also near the radioactive source.
“We will have to keep this family under medical watch for the sole reason of being near a certain distance from the source,” CNSNS operations director Mardonio Jimenez told Milenio television, without specifying how many people were in the family.
Authorities have warned that whoever removed the radioactive material by hand was probably contaminated and could soon die. Authorities are still looking for the thieves.

Armchair psychologists can entertain themselves with this (or not):
There are only two things that I have ever “experienced” multiple times in dreams. The first is pulling a hair or splinter out of my arm that turns out to be the tail of a very long, segmented worm-like parasite. The other one is spilling a drop of liquid onto my skin that immediately causes the skin to harden like it would if you spilled crazy glue on it, but then the skin begins to dissolve away in much the same way that the acidic blood from the facehugger in “Alien” eats through the floor of the infirmary when they try to cut it off of Kane.

And that is what is making a lot of people (not just wingnuts) a little crazy. Mandela was a real, live, flawed human being. He did some amazing things, but he also made mistakes. I believe he grew and gained in wisdom as he aged and was able to lead his country out of apartheid with a minimum of pain, but he wasn’t a saint.
It’s hard to cover nuance in 140 characters, so many people just retreat to their corner and argue whether he was the aforementioned saint or a terrorist. It’s easier that way.

When those assholes renounce violence as a way to ‘Take Back America’, and when they shun the extremists who talk about it, THEN I might give a flying crap what they think about Mandela’s failure to renounce violence.
I mean, cripes, they talk about violent revolution because they don’t like the results of an election in which everyone gets to vote. And Mandela should have renounced violence against a white supremacist minority regime?

re: #399 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce
Armchair psychologists can entertain themselves with this (or not):
There are only two things that I have ever “experienced” multiple times in dreams. The first is pulling a hair or splinter out of my arm that turns out to be the tail of a very long, segmented worm-like parasite. The other one is spilling a drop of liquid onto my skin that immediately causes the skin to harden like it would if you spilled crazy glue on it, but then the skin begins to dissolve away in much the same way that the acidic blood from the facehugger in “Alien” eats through the floor of the infirmary when they try to cut it off of Kane.
That makes my ‘Arrived-late-for-a-final-in-a-class-I-didn’t-sign-up-for-but-can’t-drop-and-can’t-fake-and-must-ace-to-graduate-but-i’m-wearing-pajamas-but-wait-they’re-not-pajama-they’re-underwear-no,-wait-I’m-not-even-wearing-underwear-I’m-naked-and-nobody-has-noticed-yet-but-how-will-I-get-back-to-the-dorm?’ dream seem like a walk in the park.

You see, the whites brought the many blessings of European Civilization to the blacks so they must be eternally grateful and wait until the whites deem them ready for the next step up-like regular trash pickup.
//
The regular trash pickup comes from a reporter last night commenting on Mandela’s pragmatic attitude. The reporter had interviewed him after he became president and asked what he hoped to bring to the residents of Soweto. His response was something along the lines of “regular garbage pickup.”

Yeah, way too early in life I accidentally stumbled upon a medical text having to do with parasites. Not realizing that curiosity permanently damaged the cat, I read the whole thing.
The most downright gross one was ascaris lumbricoides, which is an absurdly large (18 inches plus) worm that enters the digestive system as a fertilized egg and migrates all throughout the bloodstream until it eventually ends up in the lungs. Infected people frequently cough up masses of fully-developed adult worms. Some of them make their way from the trachea to the esophagus and back into the stomach, where the whole wretched cycle begins again. The best part is about 17% of the human population carries it.

It’s OK to dislike Paris Hilton, but making up fake Tweets to make her look bad is dishonest and disrespectful (and not just to her on the latter point):
Reality star and heiress Paris Hilton slammed a fake tweet that claimed she had confused late South African leader Nelson Mandela with civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. in the wake of Mandela’s death yesterday.
“RIP Nelson Mandela. Your ‘I Have A Dream’ speech was so inspiring. An Amazing man,” a tweet purporting to be from Paris Hilton’s official account read.
Hilton claims that the tweet was mocked up, and slammed the writer.
“Whoever made that stupid fake tweet lacks respect to the loss the world is mourning right now,” Hilton wrote. “Same goes for all the blogs who ran with it.”

The thing about Nelson Mandela is that, as is obvious to anyone who thinks at all critically about history and politics, there are elements of his life that are less than salubrious. This is virtually inevitable when you’re part of an oppressed minority. It’s the same (to varying degrees) with the people who led the peace process on the Republican* side during the Northern Ireland Peace Process.

That’s what largely sticks in their craws, that they got drug into ending apartheid, rather than initiating it themselves. That, instead of supporting Mandela and a peaceful resolution, they instead joined Reagan and his asinine belief that there was “moderates” in the Afrikaner regime who could be convinced to slowly dismantle apartheid if only we engaged in “constructive engagement.” That if they just wished really hard for it, they could end apartheid without engaging any of the people actually opposed to it.

The unnamed 30-year-old had allegedly refused to open the door to relatives and then police who attempted to negotiate with him.
After officers could not talk the man out of the seventh floor apartment in Ashkelon, the SWAT team were called to access the building through the windows and roof.

As a woman, I disagree. They couldn’t have known whether their involvement would precipitate a crisis or prevent death. There was no opportunity for them to prepare or coordinate an effort to stop that guy.
As much as all humans should try to protect each other and physically stronger people (usually men) are a good group to do that protecting, relegating women to the status of depending on men for protection denies them full personhood.
I’d also bet every one of those guys feels survivor’s guilt to this day. There is no need to add to it.

Hmmm. Actually in a VW third gear is like all-purpose gear. I think you can go as low as 25 and as high as 90 in it, and still be in the engine’s rev band.

I know, I’ve merged onto the highway a few times in my bunny had to back off to fit in and then started to drive on down the road at 60 and then look down and go “duh”…and then sometimes I just go from 3rd to the 5th overdrive.
I learned to drive a stick in an Opal Kadet, and it was sort of the same thing. Used to do the 3 - 5 shift like that.

Spare yourself the misery. The original Robocop is worth watching, even if you don’t care for the genre, mainly because it has some cultural relevance. Secondarily because it was mostly filmed in Dallas, which is rare, and also kind of weird for those of us who live in and around there.
But I assert that all of the sequels and reboots and rehashes are not worth acknowledgement.

Also some very good satire/over the topness on commercials, television tropes (I’d pay a dollar for that!), corporate executives competing, and so forth. Plus, as mentioned in old threads, a very violent villain that could pass for an accountant.

You know, as much as most of Shapiro’s tweets make me want to kick him in the nads, I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt with this one. He is right, after all, that Mandela was a complex figure. I was thinking about him last night, and how he does and doesn’t compare to Gandhi and George Washington and the like.
If by “media hagiography”, he means comparisons to MLK and Gandhi, he’s right on a certain level, in that the ANC did not use passive resistance to white nationalist rule. Of course, George Washington didn’t use passive resistance either, and the government that George Washington was resisting was far less of a tyranny than white nationalist South Africa (hell, it could be argued that 18th century Great Britain was among the most liberal governments in the world at that time).
Of course, if by “media hagiography”, he means that the media isn’t constantly yelling COMMIE COMMIE COMMIE!, then Ben can go fuck himself.
Also, to the next winger who tweets a photo of Mandela and Castro, tweet back that photo of Donald Rumsfeld and Saddam Hussein.

I suspect that if you asked Sen Paul to spell out further details of his ideal “Economic Freedom Zone” you’ll get one of two responses:

No understanding that the lack of a social safety net and living with modern technology is going to give you something very unfree. Those that can afford it live in fortified enclaves. Those that don’t live in the equivalent of Somalia. Industry, agriculture, transportation etc. are a lot more inefficient due to the needs to *protect* it every step of the way. So your “taxes” aren’t paying to support and educate the poor, it’s paying for the police/paramilitary to protect you from them.

Outsourcing jobs to the private sector isn’t a panacea or cost-saving measure that people make it out to be. Not to mention they’ve gotten good enough now that they don’t have to really bid anymore, just fatten the wallets/campaign funds of enough Congress critters on Capital Hill to influence to decision. What’s that, the bid from the small company out of Iowa is a better deal for the DoD, will provide a better product/service, and will cost far less than expected? Sorry, the other competitor’s got big influence on the Armed Services Committee and there’s a lot of brass who’ve been offered cushy post-retirement jobs in exchange for throwing their weight behind this bid.

I have never understood the worship of the Private Sector as the perfect provider of whatever is needed. In the Private Sector, the ‘providers’ are there to make money. Period. “Providing” is simply a means to that end, and the company which “provides” least for the greatest amount of money is the winner.
Take insurance, for example - the most successful company will be the one that skates closest to the edge of not paying out at all without quite going over into breaking the law, or paying out so little that nobody buys their insurance. The service they provide is a liability for the company, rather than their mission.
OTOH, in the public sector, the service provided IS the mission.

That would be because the Articles had nothing similar to the Bill of Rights that we taken for granted in this nation. The assumption was that they didn’t need to spell that stuff out, because the individual states would address it within their own governing documents. Not to mention that including such would have been contrary to the idea that this was a confederation of sovereign states.

The service they provide is a >liability for the company, rather than their >mission.
OTOH, in the public sector, the service provided IS the mission.
That was rather well put.

U.S. TO SELL OFF UNDERPERFORMING STATES
“The American people said in the last election they want us to cut costs and focus on needs,” Obama explained. “Looking at the list, it’s hard to argue we need these. The Dakotas? Mississippi? West Virginia? It’s a no-brainer. By which I do not mean West Virginia specifically.”

Yeah, I’m hearing that one. It’s like every other time he’s caught in a “lie,” the birthers and the “I’m-just-asking-questions” crowd alike are all but screaming that this is somehow “proof” that he’s been lying about his origins since he started running for the presidency. The second group’s even more hilarious, as they’re trying to convince folks they’re not birthers while saying they “might have a point.”

His uncle was ruled to be in the US illegally in 1993, but this week he won an appeal and now gets to stay. The wingnuts are charging favoritism, but in this case it seems that what happened really was what was then-INS screwing up the man’s paperwork.

With all the branches of the family tree on his father’s side, Barack Obama has at times in his life gone to meet some of the people he’s related to but didn’t get a chance to know. That’s not a scandal, it’s a man who didn’t really get to know his father seeking to learn more about where and who he came from.

Santorum will run again. He was the first runner up in the last GOP circus, so he’s the presumptive front runner. Throw in Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, and Michele Bachmann and that’s five. Anyone else who runs will just be an added bonus to all the crazy.

I always worry about the low probability event, the little thing that shifts public opinion just enough at just the right time.
For example, GWB was patently a doofus, and Gore had the highly successful Clinton Presidency on his side of the ledger. BUT lacking Clinton’s charisma and running AWAY FROM Clinton, he allowed himself to get down to nearly a tie with Bush. Then throw in the poorly designed ballot in Palm Beach County and you end up with eight thoroughly avoidable years of George W. Bush.

Well, if he is proposing exceptions from federal taxes and regulations, that would require an Act of Congress.
More likely he’d rather not put his ideas on paper where they can be used against him by the Democrats.
Disclaimer: The above should not be read as saying the Democrats would be wrong in using his legislative proposals in fundraising materials and attack ads.
Write that up for him, he can copy it and use it.

That would be the political trickle down theory. The more money the 1% have, the larger the campaign donations/bribes/deals/payoffs/book deals/speaking engagements.

In the Conservative mind, the same level of taxation that was ‘driving an economic boom bigger than anything since WWII’* under Bush becomes confiscatory and crushing the most productive people in the economy under Obama.
The number and the reality doesn’t matter. Bush was Republican, so taxes must have been low and encouraging business; Obama’s a Democrat AND black, so taxes must be confiscatory.
