Trump Drives His Lawyers Crazy Again by Admitting on Twitter He Lied About Russian Business Interests

“Very legal & very cool”
Politics • Views: 27,339

The Narcissist in Chief is his own worst enemy. He can’t shut up when his fragile ego is in peril, and today on Twitter he did it again, while at the G20 meeting in Argentina; he admitted outright that every time he claimed he had no business interests in Russia — and that was a lot of times — he was simply lying through his teeth.

When Trump says he “talked about it on the campaign trail,” what he actually means is that he shamelessly lied about it on the campaign trail, over and over, and his family and cronies lied about it to the media and to Congress.

Hey, he was only “lightly looking” at it, and it was “very legal & very cool,” so what’s the big deal, anyway? What’s a little light treason among friends?

But if this was so innocent, legal and cool, why all the lies and coverups?

Light treason is still treason.

There’s no light criming here either.

He engaged in criminal acts. He engaged in a conspiracy to commit criminal acts. He furthered the conspiracy. One of those co-conspirators admits to committing crimes, which means that Trump is also in jeopardy for those criminal acts as a co-conspirator.

It doesn’t matter that Trump never succeeded in getting a deal for the Trump-Russia building just as it doesn’t matter that he didn’t get emails/dirt from the Russians at the June 2016 meeting.

It was the act of meeting to seek out the materials that was improper. Lying about the meeting and the coverup was a separate conspiracy/obstruction of justice.

Each successive act of lying/covering up proves the obstruction case.

Trump doesn’t know or care and is betting that the GOP doesn’t care either. They’re all too happy to let this continue.

That makes them complicit as well, since they know and have an obligation to protect the nation from threats foreign and domestic and to uphold the Constitution and right now the GOP is ignoring all that for the sake of party politics.

Yeah, I recall that photo of Murdoch on his way to meet with McConnell.

Could be - maybe the GOP’s donors and high-level supporters are now reckoning that Trump is more of a liability than an asset. The problem, of course, is that the base pretty much belongs to Trump; if the GOP leadership decides to turn on him, the base is going to vent their rage at the GOP leadership…..and they’ll do that by simply not showing up at the polls.

The GOP is in one helluva dilemma - and they have no one to blame but themselves.

Yeah. That’s definitely plausible but I think Rupert and Mitch may underestimate the backlash to GOP elected officials by GOP voters if they’re seen abandoning Trump. Then again I saw the same people who defended everything Bush did dub him a liberal after his failings were apparent to all.

That’s a good point. There’s not much Trump could do that would actually infuriate the GOP base to the point where they’d quit supporting him. The only thing I can think of is Trump supporting some kind of significant gun control legislation.

Actually carry through on his infrastructure plan and spend money in blue states.

That’d be the tipping point.

Otherwise, Trump’s doing exactly what the bigot brigade/deplorable base wants: white nationalist immigration policy? check. white nationalist civil/voting rights policy? check.

Gut the safety net? He keeps trying, so check.
Maximize tax cuts for millionaires? Check
Screw those in need of safety net? Check

Trump is more closely aligned to the base than GOP leadership is, and that’s why the leadership wont speak out when Trump does something so atrociously wrong. They know how to stay in office - let the bigots win.

The GOP base has always been more paleocon than the leadership so in that sense I’m not surprised Trump’s xenophobia and attacks on trade worked. I am that he got so many to believe that their best interests at heart so easily. Makes me think David Duke ran for a GOP nomination way too early.

Yep, pretty much, he would need to do something that is seen as such a huge “betrayal” that the base feels he has totally compromised his brand and thus ceased to be their messiah. Which in the current circumstances means signing onto something that Dems want, even if it is to get something he wants in return. I consider the odds of that happening as pretty good in the next two years, as he will be so desperate for a “win” going into reelection that he will be tempted to agree to something he considers “minor” in exchange for getting a feather to put in his cap. Infrastructure would be a good bet, but don’t be surprised if he considers an immigration reform bill that gets him even a few dineros for The Wall in exchange for (say) granting citizenship to all Dreamers.

Alienating the base from Trump is where Knecht Rupert would be essential. Fox would be essential in any plan in which the establishment breaks from Trump. Fox would need to drive the wedge between the base and Trump prior to and following any such break. They would do so by riding things like.

1. The current proposal to ban, seize and destroy bump stocks
2. Cheating US soldiers out of the funds owed them
3. Actually showing how cowardly of a shitweasel Trump is on the global stage

It’s still a question as to whether this could succeed with even Foxes help. There’s simply too many other organizations involved in maintaining the Conservative bubble to know whether Fox could pop it.

Sure we can.

Support Gun Control. He’s never cared about guns but the base would go apeshit.

Citizenship for DREAMERS.

Legalize Pot nationwide (the bible belt would never tolerate black people’s drug being legal). Tell him the tax $$$ will pay for his wall ;)

Convince him that all three will get the Dems to back off the investigation (true or not) and he’d sign on in an instant and lose 90% of his base.

Hell, you’re right, citizenship for DREAMERS would instantly alienate the vast majority of his supporters. Don’t know why that didn’t occur to me.

What did Julian Castro do?

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro violated a federal law against politicking on the job earlier this year when he fielded a journalist’s questions about the presidential race and his own chances of being chosen as Hillary Clinton’s running mate, a federal ethics watchdog agency has found.

The Office of Special Counsel determined that Castro ran afoul of the Hatch Act during his April 4, 2016, interview with Yahoo News anchor Katie Couric, even though he stressed that he was answering her political questions in his personal capacity.

re: #78 MsJ

ok, i see…

The Office of Special Counsel wrote: “Although he stated during the interview that he was ‘taking off my HUD hat for a second and just speaking individually,’ to indicate he was answering questions in his personal capacity, that disclaimer could not negate the fact that he was appearing in his official capacity for the rest of the interview, as the official HUD seal remained behind him and his political comments were bracketed by statements concerning official HUD policies and programs.”

Castro acknowledged that he’d violated the act in his response.

“In responding to a journalist’s question about the 2016 election, I offered my opinion to the interviewer after making it clear that I was articulating my personal view and not an official position,” Castro wrote. “At the time, I believed that this disclaimer was what was required by the Hatch Act. However, your analysis provides that it was not sufficient.”

On September 13, 2012, the OSC charged Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius with violating the Hatch Act by making a political speech during an official government event. Sebelius later said she had made a mistake and that the error was “technical” in nature.
On July 18, 2016, the OSC concluded that Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro violated the Hatch Act during an interview with Katie Couric. Castro admitted the violation, but denied any intent to violate the act.

Once I see the GOP base turning against Trump I.e. how Bush lost a lot as Iraq was too big a fuckup for them to deny or Bush not being a jerk on immigration reform. Till then I think Mitch remains as helpful as possible to Trump.

It was Katrina that really did it for Bush.

No matter how bad things got in Iraq, the base could choose to believe what the admin said at press conferences, or what Fox decided to show. But Katrina — they’d have to believe their own destroyed home dead neighbors empty stores missing pets over whatever Fox had to say. Assuming they had enough electricity to even have any idea what Fox was saying.

The NYTimes has an article about John Chau. It certainly didn’t change my mind about the utter foolhardiness of his mission. But it does make it clear it was rather well planned. He knew he was breaking the law.

Mr. Chau landed in Port Blair on Oct. 16, traveled to another island in the Andamans and then returned to Port Blair.

There, he holed up for 11 days in a small apartment that he referred to as a “safe house” in a long note that the police found after his death. He wrote that he never saw sunlight that whole time.

The police say he was doing this to avoid being spotted; his friends say he was trying to prevent himself from getting sick to protect the islanders, whose immune systems have been isolated so long that some experts say they could be wiped out by the common cold.

McConnell won’t allow a vote on it because it would basically be the beginning of the end, not only for Donny’s presidency but also the GOP’s chances of holding on to the Senate in 2020. Why? Once Trump vetoes the bill, the GOP would be left with a dilemma: Override the veto and thus incur the wrath of the base or allow the veto to stand and make it clear to the rest of the nation they are cool with whatever criminal acts he commits going forward? They would no longer be able to hide behind the excuse that such acts are beyond their control and mumble that they don’t think the bill necessary because Donny would never fire him.

re: #132 The Vicious Babushka

Here is what I have been doing all day.
My youngest son (from Florida) is here for the weekend and he brought my 8-year-old granddaughter so she is my pie apprentice.

[Embedded content]

Your apprentice is off to a great start. My Mom’s baking apprentice helped out with the banana bread and I complimented her twice on it. First response- “I know.” I had said it was delicious. Did it a second time the next morning since she had a mild fever. “You said that already.”

“You know you are from flyover country when you are applying for a marriage license, give them your New Mexico driver’s license, and they come back and say: ‘My supervisor says we cannot accept international driver’s licenses. Do you have a New Mexico passport?’” Clarkson said in a Facebook post after the incident.

Clarkson told the newspaper the clerk eventually went back to check another time with other staff about whether she could accept his New Mexico driver’s license as proof of identify.

“She thought New Mexico was a foreign country,” he said of the clerk. “All the couples behind us waiting in line were laughing.”

The clerk also reportedly complimented Clarkson on how well he spoke English.

Clarkson said the clerk and staff concluded that New Mexico is indeed a U.S. state after the clerk checked for a second time and accepted his license as proof of identity.

One of the more frequent critiques I hear about Pacino’s performance as Tony Montana is that it’s so over-the-top.

And it is - but then again, Tony Montana is very much an over-the-top character…..there’s really no other way to play it. All that character has is sheer bravado and ruthlessness; there’s really nothing else there.

He’s sorta like Trump in that sense - Trump can whip up a Cat 5 hurricane of bullshit, but really, that’s all there is to him. Imagine a much younger Trump as a Miami cocaine cowboy in the early 1980’s, and he’d probably be not much different from Pacino’s portrayal of Tony Montana.

Ysah that’s a legit point. KG tho being of a Cuban background may have better observations on whether or not it was an authentic portrayal of Cuban body language and that sort of thing tho. I just don’t find Tony as fascinating as I do Michael Corleone. Michael going from idealistic war hero to dying alone in Sicily is perhaps my favorite character arc in film. Pacino’s Michael Corleone is one of the greatest performances in cinema history. And the polar opposite of Tony Montana.

It’s one of the things I respect about Pacino; he can play a wide variety of characters and he’s believable. He has a new film out next year, The Irishman, with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, directed by Martin Scorsese. I’m looking forward to that one. Pacino’s playing Jimmy Hoffa.

The Older Boy has always had a unique sense of humor. Years ago, he was wearing a shirt that had some spots on it. Someone asked, “What are those?”

Years before that, he had some odd scratch marks on his back which someone saw while he was at a swimming pool. “How’d you get those?”

He said, “Badgers.”

I think my main problem with it (and to be fair, even going back to high school when I first saw the movie and didn’t really think/care about this sort of thing, I wasn’t a fan) is that it’s theoretically a Hispanic/Latino movie, and there’s like maybe three actual Latinos in the entire movie.

I do agree about Michael Corleone, for what it’s worth.

203
HappyWarrior  Nov 30, 2018 • 2:14:05pm

I think regarding Michael Corleone and Tony Montana though. You see his human and vulnerable side right form the start of the film. You see Michael even though he’s seen hell in battle is still idealistic a bit. “That’s my family Kay, not me.” And you know ultimately he’s right. Michael isn’t his father or brothers. He’s his own man that has some of their worst qualities but few of their more admirable ones. With Tony Montana, you know he’s a crook already from the minute of the Mariel Boatlift. Perhaps Scarface would work a little better if we don’t know that Tony had been in prison in Cuba though. I think that would have made his rise and fall a bit more tragic in a way IMO but I know Scarface is a remake of the older film which in turn is based off Al Capone loosely and Capone ‘s lifestory is ironically more like Tony’s than a fictional character like Michael’s. And ultimately it’s my preference in how I like stories told.

I’ve wondered from time to time what happened to Hoffa, aside from the fact that he obviously bumped off.

I doubt they’ll ever find a body. I’d imagine his body was probably incinerated or something.

Much like I doubt we’ll ever find out the identity of the Zodiac Killer or who really murdered Elizabeth Short (the Black Dahlia) or who was Jack the Ripper. There are - or were - suspects, to be sure, but most likely, it’s a guessing game for the ages.

If we would have found it, it would have been years ago and the time is running out on living witnesses if any to the event and these certainly didn’t leave a written record likely. Yeah, there were a couple of other Latino actors that had smaller roles, but I think you’re right about Bauer being the only Cuban in the film.

Yeah I think you’re right. As I said, it’s perfect for its era. Godfather is a period piece too as you know but I think it transcends time better IMO. Coppolla says he intended it as an allegory for Capitalism. I dunno if I see that but I always saw the Godfather as being about how families rise and fall. And I guess maybe that’s perhaps why Coppolla who isn’t really a crime guy really in his films was better fit to tell the tale than say someone like Scorsese who is my absolute favorite director along with the Coens.

Or who killed my second great grandfather, the same grandfather’s grandfather which is our family’s JFK. But yeah I don’t think we ever will either. If we would have found it, it would have been years ago and the time is running out on living witnesses if any to the event and these certainly didn’t leave a written record likely. Not like they were obsessed with that sort of thing like the Nazis were.

They did find the identity of the East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker/Golden State Killer a few months back and arrested him; it’s been suggested that similar methods might be used to find out who the Zodiac was. It was the result of a DNA match.

Sadly, there’s a not-insignificant percentage of homicides that go unsolved, as in the unfortunate case in your family.

Yeah I heard about that. Got a lot of talk in the genealogical community. There’s also hope those same tests can help families find missing people. But yeah, it was actually something I didn’t know about it until later. We always had the photo of his blacksmith shop but no idea he was murdered until my Dad’s cousins that still live in Pittsburgh re-enacted the photo and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette did a feature on them.

Apparently they tried to get his DNA from the back of stamps on the letters he sent. But getting the Zodiac’s DNA is only half the battle. They still have to find matches within the limited DNA databases

Her ideas were debated first by her primary opponent, the former Rep Crowley and then her Republican opponent. She didn’t owe Shapiro shit. If he wants to debate people and actually be taken as something other than the GIsh Galloping ass he is, he can run for office but he knows he’d never win since he’s as likable as Ted Cruz and unlike Cruz was stupid enough to have a lot of his stupid shit easy to access by the public.

Yeah I think a lot of people were honestly a little dismissive since she had supported Bernie but I was struck by the fact that A) she decided to run for office and B) she’s definitely intelligent. and C) she knows how to stand up for herself and what she believes. Plus we need more people in public life with her perspective. No disrespect to Crowley who I hear is a good guy but we’ve had a lot of middle aged white boomers in office too. AOC is a voice of a group that doesn’t have as much voice in public life so making her 1 of the 435 was a welcome addition for me even if I think she’s a little mistaken pushing the Dem socialist stuff but I don’t think she’s an idiot or anything like that.

Somethings afoot
From Ballotpedia

November 30, 2018: The North Carolina State Board of Elections reconvened and voted, 7-2, for an evidentiary hearing on the irregularities before December 21, 2018.[3]
November 28, 2018: Bobby Ludlum, the chairman of the Bladen County Board of Elections, said that the chief investigator for the North Carolina Board of Elections collected absentee by mail ballot request forms and their return envelopes from Bladen County, which partially sits in the 9th District, after the election.[4]
November 27, 2018: The North Carolina State Board of Elections, which is comprised of four Democrats, four Republicans, and one independent member, voted unanimously not to certify the results in the 9th Congressional District. Vice Chairman Joshua Malcolm, who made the motion to delay certification, cited a law saying the board could “take any other action necessary to assure that an election is determined without taint of fraud or corruption and without irregularities that may have changed the result of an election.”[5][6]

This is the forced-birth crowd trying to get an abortion case before SCOTUS in the hopes that Kavanaugh will join the other 4 conservatives on the bench in striking down RvW.

And as I tell forced birthers every opportunity I can, overturning Roe v. Wade does not mean abortion will stop. What it does mean is that abortion will go underground and could become dangerous. But they don’t care, because they fetishize the fetus over the already-here living woman.

In fact, there’s an outfit that regularly pickets a Planned Parenthood over in Tempe. I’m sorely tempted to go over there and stand across the street from their signs (which really do say “Planned Parenthood Kills Babies”) with my sign, which would say, “Jesus didn’t die so you could harass women.” Because I am tired of mostly men telling us women what we can do with our ladyparts.

We’re at a place similar to when the Soviet leadership was all doddering old men terrified of everything—each other, because they were all Stalin Pals, the rest of the world, because things weren’t going according to dogma—and there was a lot of talk about whether they’d set fire to the Cold War just because they couldn’t imagine a world in which (1) they had to concede they were wrong, (2) someone younger replaced them and made different choices.

That’s the background to which Gorbachev was reacting when he opened talks with Reagan.

I use the analogy because in both cases it’s about becoming insulated from perspective by having power. “What is right” becomes fused with “what I want” because no one’s allowed to contradict them. Faced with the possibility that they are not essential to the world, and that their wants are, in fact, not objectively Good, they…um…freak the fuck out and considering smashing everything.

I keep saying, what unites the various incoherent bits of “conservatism” is narcissism and a worldview in which there’s an a priori assumption that they are Right (correct) and Right (moral) such that all subsequent findings about the world hinge on the distinction of Us* versus Not Us.

*more accurately: “Me and people that temporarily serve my interests but who can be discarded when they fail to have utility to me.”

Basically, the bar is so fucking low that even people that once seemed entirely without scruples are suddenly, by comparison, reasonable.

Like, imagine one of those old dating games where you question three dates and pick one.

Except one of them is Count Orlock from Nosferatu, and he’s completely open about he’s only on a dating game to find a female victim to drain of her blood and convert her into his eternal slave.

And the second contestant is merely an MRA type wearing a ridiculous hat who’s like, “hey maybe that sexy lady doesn’t want to be a night creature reeking of grave dirt…but also hey baby do you put out on the first date because you’re not so hot you can get away with leading a guy on”

Shorter version of DOJ filing: President Talks out of his ass doesn’t know what he’s talking about and therefore can’t be taken at his word on anything.

This is extremely worrisome as the DOJ position is now that you can’t take Trump at his word essentially every time he talks or tweets, which is extremely dangerous and shows that he’s not in the right frame of mind. Yet the GOP continues backing the tangerine toddler because of the R after his name, and that the GOP bigot brigade deplorable base is in lockstep with Trump’s white nationalist agenda.

A lot of these folks want an authoritarian system, so long as it enforces their whims and doesn’t gore their oxen.

Same with Trump people in general. They aren’t deluded, they literally think the ideal system is one where they get to do whatever they want…hurt who they want, fuck how they want…while “other” people are tightly controlled.

There’s no depth. It’s basic power/sex stuff tarted up with a coating of cultural tropes in hues of “tradition.” The stuff they believe in, they alter at will to suit what they want in the moment. Which is why all of their explanatory constructs—their religion, their economic models, their social models—deliberately include a contempt for critique or analysis.

Hence the endless self-contradiction that they refuse to acknowledge as such.

re: #363 Very Cool Very Legal Ghost Flea

What makes you think Hannity needs kompromat to be driven to lick authoritarian boots?

Scary to say that that was very well said.

Sadly, that personality type seems to be the most driven and has the ability to appeal to the emotional urges of others, take over and seize power. Goddamn the rules, hence our violent history.

All good democracies die with a populist emperor taking over.

Yep a two minute Huff Post video has them furious even though I’ve been wondering why Santa was a jerk in that story for awhlie. That dinner really sucked, and I never saw that drummer the same way again.

Funny thing though 80 years ago when Montgomery Ward devised Rudolph, I bet there were plenty of Christian conservatives who accused Ward of “politicizing” Christmas by having a story about a bullied reindeer who ends up a hero.

re: #364 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I’d say it’s more “If I can’t have you, no one will!”

Basically, the narcissist shit that on the surface can look like love or principles, because it structures relationships on other people, but is ultimately about the “leader” figure refusing to see his family/followers/subjects as beings separate from himself who deserve autonomy and should be loved even as they make their own, different decisions. It’s a power dynamic…purely vertical… disguised as an emotional exchange…generally more horizontal.

In people with severely impaired empathy (or who kill their empathy) this base assumption leads to turning on and hurting one’s “loved ones” if they fail to obey…or fail to succeed at whatever insane shit is demanded of them, which is seen as a failure to obey…because other people only matter in that they are functioning as subordinates and proxies. It’s easiest to provide examples for the most extreme cases because they’re so well documented—family annihilator John List; cult leader Jim Jones; Hitler’s ranting, self-pitying finale that resulted in the Nero Order—but what we’re talking about is the basic drive of every abusive shit husband/partner/parent out there. This is why I keep referencing domestic abuse tactics when talking about Trump and the coterie of people that back him.

A different experience but I went out drinking one night with a friend and some of his cowokers. It’s frustrating because PETA if they grew the hell up could bring attention to some legitimate causes. But they’re intolerant towards anyone who doesn’t treat eating meat like murder. And because of that, it allows idiots like FNC to label every vegetarian or vegan in with them even though most of the ones I’ve known are pretty cool about me eating meat. I obviously try to respect if I’m treating for dinner and don’t go with someone heavy in meat but they never make me feel bad if I get a meat entree or app.

Mental health clinic opens inside a Walmart in Texas

Other medical services are already available at Walmart, such as eye exams. But is a retail setting appropriate for mental health care?

You can go to Walmart to buy toothpaste and shampoo, order glasses or fulfill a drug prescription. Now, some customers can also get therapy.

A new outpatient mental health clinic has opened inside a Walmart store in Carrollton, Texas, north of Dallas. People can walk in, call or make an appointment online to see a licensed mental health professional about problems such as anxiety, depression, grief, relationship troubles or the stresses of everyday living.

re: #427 HappyWarrior

It’s frustrating because PETA if they grew the hell up could bring attention to some legitimate causes. But they’re intolerant towards anyone who doesn’t treat eating meat like murder. And because of that, it allows idiots like FNC to label every vegetarian or vegan in with them even though most of the ones I’ve known are pretty cool about me eating meat. I obviously try to respect if I’m treating for dinner and don’t go with someone heavy in meat but they never make me feel bad if I get a meat entree or app.

It’s more than that. They’d rather see dead pets than anyone owing pets. They steal pets from yards and kill them (they killed some little girls Chihuahua, took it from the yard right near their own office). They release dogs from their crates at dog shows (one got run over and died). They’re absolutely terrorists.

When my first son graduated from middle school I took him to a U2 concert in Boston because he wanted to go and I really wanted to go (sorry, U2 haters). When my second son graduated last year the whole family went to see Brandi Carlile and Jason Isbell on a double bill. He thought it was fine, but that wasn’t his thing. His equivalent now of U2 would be Bob Dylan, but he found out that Lindsey Buckingham will be playing nearby soon. So I’m taking by son to a Lindsey Buckingham concert, that I can’t really afford right before Christmas, but hey…..

Which is to say… if Cheeto REALLY fucks up in the next few weeks in a way that would also take Pence with him, is there any incentive for Republicans to get him gone before 1/3/19 so they can install Ryan instead of putting Pelosi in the big chair?

re: #401 Charles Johnson

I think there’s a bunch who see a chance at derivative opportunities to do their own using and abusing.

They imagine they’ll never be on the down side of an abuse dynamic because they’re (1) sheltering under someone “strong” that they please enough to not get punished; (2) they’re one of the smart people that will eventually rise in the use/abuse org chart and thus be even less vulnerable. Basically, they’re the Druges in Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange; schemers, idiots, and cowards girding themselves by following someone especially cruel, gambling that the cruelty won’t point towards them as long as there’s easier prey, as long as they perform deference enough.

This is most naked in the people who delight in Trump’s rudeness, proud ignorance, and bald lying. They want that. License—doing stupid, or cruel, or random shit because people can’t stop you—is an assertion of power. That’s why rebellious cultural movements can bend reactionary…smashing and misbehaving to punch up simply becomes smashing and behaving to punch at whoever you get away with punching.

Look at Chris Cantwell the crying Nazi in specific and Charlottesville in general. These are people who are too weak to be true libertines—just do the shit they say damn the consequences, as de Sade did—so they develop social groups based around a hierarchy of perceived license…the dudes that rise are the ones that seem to get away with shit, to say the worst things and act like bastards freely, while they’re orbited by suckups and goons. How the ralliers behaved en masse, but with no audience, was bolder than how they behaved, en masse, but face to face with protesters. How they behaved faced with real pushback…from people fighting back, from the law…shows how their fragiity defines their activity.

(note: the Youtube video linking includes material alt-right broadcasters scrubbed after Charlottesville got them intense pushback. It depicts the distinct gulf between what was said at the points in the rally where no outsiders were present versus at other times. That the edgelords are at their boldest when “safe” should say something pretty damning about how they view “safe spaces”…but these are people who live by not engaging in introspection.)

Same thing with the Proud Boys. They exist to create license for one another: a homosocial group of dudes encouraging each other to be transgressive while claiming that its essentially masculine and right (correct and moral) because it’s essentially masculine. Yet each time it comes to the crunch, they makes choices that show how afraid they are, how dependent they are on a central figure that inspires that sense of what is permitted. Shit gets reals…a bunch hide…a bunch others attempt to “amend” the group’s behavior in a way that mimics the very social norms they’re putatively rejecting.

They’re cowards, and cowards are dangerous in their own way. These are men looking for an opening to do what they want…cruel, transgressive things they perceive they can’t get away with…and they make a choice to get under an individual or organization that allows and justifies that want. It’s not banality of evil, it’s opportunism of evil.

(This reflects what I said about ISIS awhile back, btw: at what point does the freebooting…the opportunity to rape, steal, and murder so long as it occurs within a minimally-constructed Islamic jurisprudence…become a draw, such that it’s not about religion but about free zone antisocial impulses?)

Thing is…all of the above applies to the Trump cronies in boardrooms and government offices. They’re smart enough to not lash out physically, but ultimately they’re still playing the same upwardly-mobile goon gambit: get in behind the bigger, crueler bastard and get what you can. There’s no loyalty, and not even a real coherent ideology. Hence the constant interpersonal intrigue and drama…everyone’s fighting for more scraps, and the best strategy is by managing the central figure who grants license. And you can see the ones shut out of the spoils system try and overturn the central power pyramid, but not the basic premise of a hierarchy of license and opportunism.

Case in point—Lindsey Graham. Unmoored from John McCain, you can watch Graham attempt to position himself under Trump, fail, and turn on Trump. There’s no guiding principles, just power calculations.

The Speaker would only become the President if there was no Vice President in place, after the President would presumably not finish their term. Basically, Pence would become President if Trump were to be gone, and Pence would nominate a replacement VP, to be confirmed by the Senate. Then in Pence were to be removed, this new VP would become President and would nominate a new VP to reconfirmed by the Senate. Pelosi only becomes President if Trump and Pence were gone in short order with no possible replacement named.

Still, This Old House is light years closer to reality than HGTV shows, which are mostly a work, I think. And TOH still attempts to be educational, and the producers push high-quality work by professionals.

HGTV exists to keep people running to Home Depot and Lowes and similar stores, in the never ending cycle of buying a larger house because we need more stuff… and more stuff.

It’s s a countdown until he starts shitting thinkpieces claiming that left fucked up and Real Conservatives don’t know how all these hybrid fish people social conservative nationalists took over the Republican Party and conservative groups worldwide.

All he knows is it didn’t have a thing to do with a systematic program of making deals with the fish people that live on the coast off Innsmouth where they provide larger catches in exchange for mating with humans the absolutely quackiest social conservative organizations so that their raving base could be convinced that tax cuts are what are required to keep White Jesus filled with sacred energy so he can fight off the Black Communazi Hippy hordes.

That his story and he’s sticking to it.

Also, I’m contractually required to observe that Jonah Goldberg wrote Liberal Fascism and absolutely no posturing as a reasonable person now can compensate for his utterly cynical, counterfactual pornography in which nothing is the fault of conservatism and all liberalism is inherently tyrannical.

What the stupid Trump cultists don’t get is that kind of shit is why they don’t like him. Not some deep state conspiracy bullshit but being undermined constantly by him.

Or pretty much just knowing, from their investigations, what a scumbag crook (possibly traitor), that he really is.

Like for example, a detective that knows this guy. He seems nice enough, says hi and never causes a fuss. Detective figures this person is ok. Then a case comes across the detectives desk of a child sexual predator. In his investigation he discovers all evidence points to this seemingly ok guy. The detective is bound to start thinking differently of the guy, like maybe thinking he is a scumbag and felon.
