Excellent Palin Smack-Down of the Day

“The last I checked, Sarah Palin is not much of an expert on nuclear issues.”

Youtube Video

I have to differ with President Obama.

Sarah Palin is not much of an expert on anything, except maybe shooting defenseless animals with high caliber weapons.

She’s an empty-headed, platitude-spouting, fanatically religious, determinedly ignorant, anti-science dim bulb.

Conservatives would have you believe that any attempt to disarm would somehow result in Russia taking advantage in such a way that, in a rather short period of time, you will actually see Russians from your house.

it's really too bad that BO even had to address a question concerning Palin....we have fallen far, in that Palin serves any equation...let her die on the vine

The Indies will rush to the voting booth if she is the GOP candidate as many believe.

I feel really confident that any President will have had the benefit of advisors from whom the President will have gleaned much more expertise on nukes and nuclear issues than any has-been Governor.

Dammit. Again I agree with this guy. I hate that.

Seriously, now is a good time to get the Russians to throttle down on big nasty weapons. We outspent them in the 70's and 80's and thats how we won the cold war. If we get into a spending war with Russia right now they will destroy us. They are one of only a handful of countries that are doing well right now financially. We, are seriously NOT.

Cruise missiles, bombers, etc. anything that could potentially carry a nuke is not not an option... but the same delivery systems that deliver conventional weapons are now also gone. We could not do very much to protect ourselves if this treaty is ratified.

That was before she showed herself to be a quitter. If she'd lost the VP/Presidential election & gone home & done a good job for her state as governor, I MIGHT cut her some slack. No, she quit, wrote a book & turned up as a hired speaker. ( I was going to say hired gun, but she's just a talking head.) So, today, Sarah is, what she is, and I am grateful that she is not the VP of the USA. There are also the creationist issues, but quitting for me, was the biggest issue.

It is truly an awesome "Duh" kind of comment from the president. I have been waiting for any elected official to respond this way. Good for him.
Too bad she, and his response to her, are detracting from the very real issue of his decision to announce a policy change of this magnitude. Not sure I agree with the decision. In fact, I'm sure I don't. Keeping your options open gives you much more leverage and frankly, he does not know he will actually be able to abide by such policy. You won't use nukes on non-nuclear capable enemies? Really? If if they decide to detonate chemical or biological weapons on a helpless populous? Even if they are kicking your non-nuclear butt? Even to save millions from a lingering war? Just because he has advisers, doesn't mean either that they are right or he is actually listening to them.
This policy change should be discussed and questioned, I think, not just dismissed cause its a stupid (word deleted) Republican ex-senator bringing it up. That's what we do in this country.

This is also just common sense. Nukes are about as viable as sieges in todays' military theaters. We can take the top off a phone pole from 6,000 miles away. Using a device that renders everything, within and without of its blast range, unusable, is just stupid, today.

This is like agreeing to no longer use trench warfare. And we have better uses for the uranium.

Cruise missiles, bombers, etc. anything that could potentially carry a nuke is not not an option... but the same delivery systems that deliver conventional weapons are now also gone. We could not do very much to protect ourselves if this treaty is ratified.

Ok, no ICBM or cruise missile (designed to carry nuclear weapons) can carry a conventional payload worth bothering about.

Stealthy manned or unmanned aircraft with precision guided weapons can deliver smaller bombs to more effect and can be used for conventional use against conventional targets.

Also, as long as we have our ballistic missile submarines at sea no first strike could knock out our retaliatory response. MAD still works, just less warheads and missiles to make the rubble bounce.

I'm less worried about a nuke in a missile (which is very hard to do) than one in the back of an 18 wheeler or in a ships cargo container.

re: #74 swamprat
No. Actually you can make a nuke that is every bit as "surgical" as any other bomb. That is, any explosion large enough to destroy a countries entire war making capabilities at one shot, is NOT going to be surgical. And that is what nukes are for. And it isn't about whether we would actually use them. It is about what the enemy believesd about whether we would use them. That is why every other American pres. has hedged their bets by making no promises not to use them first or use them against those that don't have their own. I agree we need to reduce stockpiles to what we actually need. After a certain point, its just silly, expensive and dangerous. But promising not to use them is tying your own hands for people who are just not that trustworthy.

Pie in the sky project? As far as I'm concerned it was brilliant and has borne successful tests.

US 'Star Wars' lasers bring down ballistic missile

The US this week achieved a goal that has eluded it since Ronald Reagan's Star Wars programme by knocking out a ballistic missile using a high-powered laser beam mounted on a plane.

The successful test was carried out yesterday in California, the US Missile Defence Agency (MDA) said, making real what had previously been confined to the realms of science fiction.

The plane uses a combination of lasers to lock on to the missile and track its trajectory, and then bring it down with a single shot fired from the nose turret, all in less than 12 seconds.

At least he can pronounce the word "nuclear."

Charles, the word nuclear was actually pronounced nuc-u-lar during the inception of the US nuclear program. There were two camps and eventually, nu-cle-ar won out. But it was really just preference. It is likely he grew up (in Texas I can almost guarantee it) hearing it said that way. Did he understand its meaning and use it properly? Then why the constant harping on it? What do you think about the labor unions starting a third party?

It’s War: SEIU Starting Third Party In North Carolina

In a shot across the bow of Dems, the labor powerhouse SEIU is starting a new third party in North Carolina that hopes to field its own slate of candidates, part of an effort to make the Democratic Party more reliable on issues important to labor, I’m told.

SEIU officials setting up the new party, called North Carolina First, are currently on the ground collecting signatures to qualify as a state party, SEIU officials tell me, adding that there are around 100 canvassers on the ground right now. The goal: To have the party up and running so candidates can run in this fall’s elections.

It won’t be lost on political observers that three House Dems who voted No on reform are from the state: Heath Shuler, Mike McIntyre, and Larry Kissell.

The new project is an outgrowth of SEIU’s earlier vow to hold House Dems accountable for voting against heatlh reform and against labor’s interests in general. That said, presuming the party qualifies at all, it remains to be seen how much clout it will wield.

But will it be as big as the Tea Party is to the right?

OK. But when you talk about a "surgical" nuke, You could get the same effect with large conventional weapons;
oui/non?

The United States, Russia, China, France and England (maybe Israel) all have their nuclear deterrents hidden on way or another. Either under the water (subs) (This is the only ICBMs France and England have) or in trucks (Yes the Russians have huge truck they move around carrying ICBMs) or in hardened silos.

North Korea, and maybe Iran in the future just won't have the throw weight for an effective first strike.

Sarah Palin is a women (we all think, anyway...)

There has never been a female Presidential nominee by a major party (VP yes... twice - both lost.)

I still believe it will be harder for a female to become President of the US than for a black male.

Suspect that there are plenty of operatives in the various GOP camps who will do what they can to derail the Sarah bandwagon.

I don't want her to lose because she is a woman.
I want her to lose, or better yet! Not run, because she is a quitter.
And, not very bright, among other things.
I'd vote for Condaleeza Rice in a heartbeat, but then, I also liked Henry Kissinger. Gosh, where did all the smart people go? They sure aren't in politics, now.

Neither am I. But it doesn't matter if you are attacking your enemies nuclear assets with conventional or nuclear weapons if you don't know where they are. That is why we put them on subs. If you can't find the subs, you can't kill them.
Keeping in mind one submarine can deliver upwards of 160 200kt warheads (your mileage may vary) within a few yards of it target.

302 Gus  Thu, Apr 8, 2010 9:23:34pm

The ultimate goal for mankind should be the elimination of all nuclear weapons. Any step in that direction that takes into consideration the security of this nation is a good step.

Sheers numbers of warheads are meaningless. If in the context of a cold war like state survivability of the delivery systems is paramount. Submarine based SLBMs are one of the most stealth methods of delivery available. To that end the USA currently has 1,728 SLBM warheads compared to Russia with 624. This is approximately an advantage of 3 to 1.

Regardless of this and other technical issues the Cold War ended decades ago. We are no longer and should not longer be in an arms race with Russia. Sheer numbers of nuclear weapons do not tell the whole story.

For facts on the new posture the 2010 Nuclear Posture Review is available on line.

It's important to remember that START does not mean the unilateral disarmament of our nuclear capability:

Building on NPR analysis, the United States and Russia have agreed to mutual limits under the New START:

A limit of 1,550 accountable strategic warheads;

A separate limit of 700 deployed ICBMs, deployed SLBMs, and deployed nuclear-capable
heavy bombers; and

A combined limit of 800 deployed and non-deployed ICBM launchers, SLBM launchers, and nuclear capable heavy bombers.

I don't think you would want to be above ground in the event that those 1,550 warheads were ever detonated in the course of a week.

The word nuclear comes from the Latin nucleus, which means core, or inner part.

Nuclear energy (also called atomic energy) is liberated by the disintegration of the nuclei of certain atoms, the unstable atoms. To gain stability, the unstable atoms are transformed into another type of atom, liberating energy in the form of radiation; this is the phenomenon known as radioactivity.

If this treaty is what Brookly thinks it is, then it will be voted down. If it's what I think it is, it will probably be ratified.

The treaty will limit both sides to 1550 active warheads, those that are on land based, sub launched, or bomber carried active status. It will also allow another 800 warheads on each side that are "non-deployed" as in down for maintenance or inspection, stored in bunkers, whatever...

Considering that it only would take about 85 warheads to kill 80% of the Russian population I fail to see a problem here. So we agree to reduce our capacity to kill them from 56 times to only about 26 times? There has never been a female Presidential nominee by a major party (VP yes... twice - both lost.)

I still believe it will be harder for a female to become President of the US than for a black male.

re: #302 Gus 802

I don't think you would want to be above ground in the event that those 1,550 warheads were ever detonated in the course of a week.

I wonder: Does 1 sub count as 1 launcher, or does it count for as many launchers as the number of missiles it carries.

It's much easier to be sheltered from the tough questions if you're just a pundit. There's no way she could sustain her media bubble if she ran for the presidency.

Still, I think that both Charles and Chris Bowers are making a convincing case for Sarah being the nominee in 2012. Scary thought, that. But at the rate she's going, it's entirely possible.

My recurrent question about Palin as the Republican nominee is that she's never, AFAIK, had to go up against a hostile fellow Republican. And based on what I have seen, any other potential Republican candidate will be able to beat her into the ground with one hand tied behind his/her back. She knows nothing about policy, that I can tell. A bright seventeen-year-old Young Republican campaign volunteer could take her down.

Is cute and peppy, and gosh-darn patriotic really going to pull her through any form of primary debate?

Neither am I. But it doesn't matter if you are attacking your enemies nuclear assets with conventional or nuclear weapons if you don't know where they are. That is why we put them on subs. If you can't find the subs, you can't kill them.
Keeping in mind one submarine can deliver upwards of 160 200kt warheads (your mileage may vary) within a few yards of it target.

I agree. But I don't think they would be trying to target our military assets. Is the correct term asymmetric warfare? I think they would go straight for high-density civilian populations.

This will finish off the economy...

Volcker on the VAT
The middle class is where the money is.

Kudos for candor to Paul Volcker, the former Federal Reserve Chairman and current White House economic adviser, for admitting what other Democrats also know but don't want to admit until after the November election: The political class is preparing to pass a European-style value-added tax.

Answering a question at the New York Historical Society on Tuesday, Mr. Volcker said that a VAT—a consumption tax levied along stages of production—"was not as toxic an idea" as it has been, and that both a VAT and some kind of tax on energy need to be on the table. "If at the end of the day we need to raise taxes, we should raise taxes," he said.

We've long predicted that this would be the White House fiscal strategy, and its new deficit commission is bound to propose something along these lines. In Europe, a VAT rate that reaches 20% in some countries applies to countless products and services, so the middle class would be hit especially hard.

Though Mr. Volcker didn't say this, he is acknowledging that taxes on the rich can't begin to finance the levels of new spending that the current government has unleashed. Even the expiration of the Bush tax rates next January and the new taxes in the health-care bill won't be enough.

She can avoid interviews and press conferences, but eventually she's gotta debate other GOP hopefuls. Unless they're afraid of teabag backlash, they will tear her apart. Months of hearing a few respected Republicans hammer her for quitting and being ignorant will take its toll. Just for informational purposes, methane is an odorless gas. Natural gas companies have to add an odorant in order for people to be able to detect potentially lethal gas leaks, even before they become explosive mixtures. Methyl mercaptan is typically used to make it "stinky".

And for additional clarification, if you smell something odiferous and truly odious, it's very possible if not probable that methane is is part of the brew. But it's not the stinky part.

Volcker on the VAT
The middle class is where the money is.

White House distances itself from Volcker tax remarks

WASHINGTON, April 7 (Reuters) - The White House distanced itself on Wednesday from remarks by former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker that higher U.S. taxes might one day be needed to control the country's deficit.

It won't be. The wingnut right has either completely forgotten about that, or found a way to rationalize it.

I agree about the teabag primary voters, but Joe and Jane Suburb look for smart, electable candidates when they vote in GOP primaries.

Palin may be doing OK in the early GOP polls, but she's gonna have to seal the deal with the everyday conservatives (as opposed to wingnuts) in the party...the kind of folks who voted for McCain in the primaries because he seemed qualified and electable.

No, and she is also a "Quitter" and don't think that her opponent from either side of the aisle is going to let her forget it.

What was playing in the theater anyway?

EYES WIDE OPEN
In its San Francisco premiere, director Haim Tabakman’s taut drama EYES WIDE OPEN (Official Selection, 2009 Cannes Film Festival “Un Certain Regard”) is the tale of a forbidden same-sex romance set in Israel’s ultra-orthodox Jewish community. Aaron (Zohar Strauss) lives in Jerusalem and is a respected kosher butcher, a husband, and dedicated father of four children. He needs help around his shop, so he hires the handsome 22-year-old student Ezri (Ran Danker) as an assistant. Aaron quickly becomes swept away by his unexpectedly strong feelings for uninhibited Ezri. But guilt, torment and pressure from the community soon catch up, and Aaron is forced to make an impossible decision.

AND

THE SECRETS
Set in Safed, the site where the mystical texts of the Kabbalah were first received, Avi Nesher’s feature film THE SECRETS (SFJFF 2008) recounts the story of two young women fighting to be heard in the patriarchal world of the ultra-orthodox. Naomi, the daughter of a revered rabbi, manages to escape the yoke of an arranged marriage and comes to Safed to study in an orthodox women’s seminary. There, she catches the eye of Michelle, a rebellious new arrival from France. As they secretly embark on a series of purifying rituals together, their journey becomes even more complicated as they discover their growing attraction to one another. The film features Fanny Ardant in the role of a mysterious French visitor

Ronald Reagan Day bill passes CA Senate

I am pleased to announce my bill that would create a “Ronald Reagan Day” in California unanimously passed the Senate today. When enacted, Senate Bill 944 will formally encourage the celebration of the life and legacy of President Reagan throughout California’s schools for the first Ronald Reagan Day on his 100th Birthday in 2011, as well as every Feb. 6 thereafter.

It’s important for California school children to study a meaningful and well-known political leader like Reagan, whose earlier accomplishments are a model of personal responsibility and an inspiration to young, developing minds.

The bill now moves to the Assembly and faces no opposition.

3. The Bronze Cow and Fan: Awarded to the bloggers who best use threats of violence and blow rumors out of proportion in a effort to make the [deleted] hit the fan. First awarded to Robert Stacy McCain, it takes the form of a bronze medal hanging from a brown ribbon. The medal shows a picture of cow with its tail raised and its backside next to a rotating fan.

Sorry, I fail to see how this current deal gets rid of our defenses. The fact of the matter is that Obama is talking and acting in a similar way to how Reagan did with respect to nuclear weapons, and there are quite a few who can't or won't wrap their heads around this.

Three tail feathers of the crocoduck have hangers, on which are hung turds, one for each anti0science campaign the wingnut has participated it: A brown turd represents the gallant defense of creationism, a green turd stands for the brave struggle against the so-called science of AGW, and a yellow turd is for those who fight to protect our precious bodily fluids against vaccines and water fluoridation.

Lewis and Short record that the earliest spelling of the Latin nucleus, "kernel" was nuculeus, a diminutive of nux, "nut." The related nucula, small nut, was also attested as a female name.

A quick search of the OED finds dozens of words ending in -cular, in particular, the adjectival forms of nouns ending in -cle or -cule, deriving from the Latin diminutive suffix -culus. There are NO words (aside from compounds of the adjective clear) ending in -clear except nuclear and compounds thereof.

1. Legion of the Golden Teabag.

This award is given to those wingnuts who have done the most to rile up the Tea Party crowd. It can be earned by pushing the GOP further to the right, purging RINOs, or organizing Tea Parties where the wingnuts can let their freak flags fly. It takes the form of a gold teabag on a gold string. This award was first given to Glenn Beck in a emotional ceremony where he cried for 10 minutes before writing his acceptance speech out on a blackboard. The speech consisted mostly of denunciations of "OBAMUNIST OLIGARHY!!1".

Much seething going on in the UK...

MUSLIMS' FURY AS ARMY USES CUT-OUT MOSQUES ON BRITISH FIRING RANGE

ARMY chiefs were forced to apologise yesterday for using mosque-like buildings on a firing range used as vital preparation for combat in Afghanistan.

It is standard practice for the Army to try to replicate local conditions on training bases to prepare soldiers for fighting on foreign soil.

This resulted in one range, at Catterick in North Yorkshire, having a series of single-panel “buildings” painted to resemble Islam-inspired local architecture in Helmand province.

But Muslim groups are demanding they be ripped down because they believe they could be construed as mosques.

But Muslim groups are demanding they be ripped down because they believe they could be construed as mosques.

Could be? One would think that a mosque would be identifiable and not easily "construed" as some other building. Besides which I am quite sure the only reason for a mosque on the training site would be to tell them "Don't shoot at that unless it is 100% absolutely necessary."

The U.S. has taught it soldiers about mosques and told them that they cannot fire on them no matter the provocation without authority from much higher up the food chain. Who is to say that isn't the purpose there if in fact they have actually made a mock-up of a mosque which is by no means assured from the wording of this article.

Latin pronunciation of "little nut".

I admit, my response to 463 was tacky. But to suggest that "earliest latin" spelling of "nuculus" somehow translated to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when it first became clear that there was an atom that likely contained a nucleus, leaves little room for stretching the truth to suggest that "nucular" is somehow a logical alternative for the reality of what a word relating to the nucleus might be. The real truth is therefore irrefutable, and that is that nuclear is derived from the modern meaning of nucleus, not something from ancient latin.

Jimmy Carter had a background involving nuclear science, and even he used the clearly misappropriated "nucular", which has always made my skin crawl.

We are talking about nuclear programs and nuclear bombs, regardless of the spoken ignorance of some persons regarding the same.

Considering the constant Tea Party whining about socialism and communists, I'm guessing a lot more than 10,000 folks think we're still in a Cold War. That's the problem. Low-information voters that revel in their ignorance and who think that Sarah is just like them.

Those same folks also happen to be the real grassroots and activists in the GOP. If they're motivated enough, they could sway the primaries in her direction.

Deep down, the sane folks know she can't run anything. There are still plenty of dead-enders who see her as a rising star in the GOP and who want her to run. If she manages to hang on through the primaries, she could very well end up the nominee.

I'm not saying it's a guarantee, but given that Romney has no chance in hell in the South because he's a Mormon, and Huckabee has no chance outside the South if Palin runs (since her fans and his overlap), she has a decent shot at it.

Yeah, it was a Bachmann rally. However, for whatever reasons she still draws a crowd. That can't be ignored, except at the GOP's peril.

She won't get the votes of the sane folks on the right. They'll either stay home or hold their nose and pull the trigger for Obama if it comes down to that. But we can't cast aside the Tea Party wingnuts. There are a lot of them out there. The question is, are there enough of them to give her the nomination in 2012?

I don't think Palin is really gonna run for POTUS in '12, though I may well end up eating crow on that.

I do think she is letting her fans think she might. She has a pretty sizable base of fans buying her crap (books, etc.), and I think that if she were to make a declarative statement that she won't be seeking the nomination, she could stand to lose a very significant chunk of her book-buying fan base.

re: #545 Slumbering Behemoth

Could you imagine her in a real debate?

re: #510 tnguitarist

Nice bait, for a three year old that is, same story different day, sure Palin has a chance, of being nominated. Of winning? Not so much.

Ohh, but gee we wouldn't want to seem non-PC and be accused to "dickism" because of course if we are are against Sarah Palin it has to be because of what she lacks between her legs and not what she is missing between her ears....

"Heads I win, Tails you lose" is that what you think?

I missed her debate with Biden, so I don't really know how she'd preform.

Oh, wait. You said a real debate. Never mind, Biden doesn't count.

Without scrolling through 500+ responses I'm hoping someone has already pointed out that our president isn't an authority on nuclear or military issues either. The man didn't even know the US has always reserved the right to "first strike" until months after taking office, that's embarrassing.

re: #552 RogueOne

Listen carefully to his whole answer. He is comparing Palin to his SecDef and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, not to himself.

What Obama is doing is position Palin as just an ignorant pundit, while he listens to national security specialists.

re: #553 freetoken

I heard what he said and I've said before this new stance means essentially nothing but that's not the point. Before he decides to make fun of someone for not being an expert maybe he should have taken a long look at himself in the mirror. My position is it's another example of the problem with hiring someone, the president, who has zero experience. None in the real world and close to none in the political. According to news reports he was "stunned" to find out the US position reserving the right of first strike, that's embarrassingly stupid.

Probably so.
Some of us idiotically didn't see it.
Myself included.

I'm genuinely fascinated by this. I might have voted for McCain. I was on the fence. But then he selected Palin and I was utterly blown away by her vapidity and arrogance. I was so disappointed in McCain.

re: #75 Charles

Palin is very probably going to be the GOP nominee in 2012.

I keep going back and forth on this.

Clearly what makes her "shiny" to her base is the possibility of her as POTUS. So, she needs to keep up the momentum of that possibility.

But I don't think she actually wants the job of POTUS. Its alot of work. Its not the kind of work that pays off with a big check every time you make a speech.

But if she doesn't run, her window of celebrity will close quickly. And with it all of the appearances, t.v. shows, speaking engagements, etc. She clearly loves the celebrity. And she loves the money. So it's a catch-22.

In the end, I think she will run in the primaries because she sort of has to, but hopes that she won't get nominated.

Ah, the Fred Thompson Gambit...

I have to differ with President Obama.

Sarah Palin is not much of an expert on anything, except maybe shooting defenseless animals with high caliber weapons.

She’s an empty-headed, platitude-spouting, fanatically religious, determinedly ignorant, anti-science dim bulb.

Don't mince words, Charles. Tell us what you REALLY think!

I would have put it more succinctly myself:

SARAH PALIN IS IRRELEVANT!!!

Would love to see Palin actually run and win the Republican nomination. Turn up the crazy and sit back and enjoy.
