Captain Marvel #1, May 1968

Arts • Views: 8,231

Tonight’s cover image from the Lizard Collection: a “very fine” to “near mint” copy of Captain Marvel #1, originally published in May 1968. Wikipedia has some interesting details on the unique history of this book: Captain Marvel (Marvel Comics).

Following a trial in which DC Comics sued Fawcett Comics for breach of copyright, the latter stopped publishing Captain Marvel. In the late sixties Marvel gained the trademark “Captain Marvel” with their first series, forcing DC to call their Captain Marvel comic book Shazam!, but to retain the trademark Marvel had to publish a Captain Marvel title every year or two since leading to a number of ongoing series, limited series and one-shots featuring a range of characters using the Captain Marvel alias.

Hrm. Mar-Vell comes from a race called the Kree. Big time assholes. Kinda fascistic, too. I'm trying to remember exactly what the Holocaust reference was for, but I'm drawing a blank...

Nah, the Wiki one looks crisper, and Charles' looks to be a little bent in the upper-right. Spine's off-center, too.

Now I'm wondering exactly when the term "Holocaust" came to be used to specifically refer to the genocide of 1939-1945.

"Out of the Holocaust" WTF

Now I'm wondering exactly when the term "Holocaust" came to be used to specifically refer to the genocide of 1939-1945.

Became common after 1978:

The term entered common parlance after 1978, the year that the popular Holocaust (TV miniseries) was broadcast on the American NBC television network. The series proved that the subject matter could have popular appeal, as well as providing a convenient and enduring term.

Inititally:

Holocaust was adopted as a translation of Shoah—a Hebrew word connoting catastrophe, calamity, disaster, and destruction—which was used in 1940 in Jerusalem in a booklet called Sho'at Yehudei Polin, and translated as The Holocaust of the Jews of Poland.

Thanks. I grew up around survivors during the '50's and the '60's and they all referred to "the war" and "the camps" but I don't remember hearing the term "Holocaust" while I was a kid.

After Cordoba Controversy, It’s Time To Look In The Mirror

In moderating his approach, Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs seems to be on the right path. A critic of jihadism during the Bush years, he broke from the right when he began to see people he respected joining up with Nazis and unapologetic racists. Having seen both sides, LGF is now a great staple in the building up of the pluralism necessary for a society in which we can all cohabitate. Let’s move away from the hate of the Pamela Gellers and into something more constructive.

I grew up seeing what the 3rd Reich did to the Jewish people watching PBS. The people that deny the Holocaust have their own sinister motivations which of course is to reverse the reality of the truly evil nature of Hitler's regime. There are many people still around that pursue this revisionism contesting every angle such as the gas canisters, the showers employed, the work camps, etc.

Holocaust as History
An introduction to historical scholarship about the Holocaust.
By Susan D. Glazer

The "Recent Jewish Catastrophe"

The atrocities of World War II have produced a specialized nomenclature. By now, the term "Holocaust" has become the designation of choice to describe the Nazi campaign of genocide against the Jews. Those Jews who suffered in the ghettos and camps of Nazi-occupied Europe, however, did not think of themselves as victims of the "Holocaust." In the immediate post-war years, the events of the Nazi era were referred to as the "recent Jewish catastrophe." It was not until the mid-1950s that the term "Holocaust" gained currency to describe the Nazi assault against the Jews.

Bold is mine.

I've never been a smoker, but I smoked a few cigarettes at parties in college, and I used to smoke herbal cigarettes (not pot, the junk you get at health food stores) occasionally.

I really enjoy the process of lighting, smoking, the whole cigaretteness of cigarettes. It's attractive to me for reasons that don't have much to do with the chemical effects.

Really? Menthols? Cause I tried my dad's cigs when I was younger (Pall Mall red pack) and they tasted awful. But I've smelled some that didn't smell as bad and thought it might be ok. I'm not really considering taking up another expensive habit. But I am incredibly curious.

yep. i'll smoke regulars, but i prefer menthols. and usually only while having an adult beverage. and usually about 3x per year.

re: #76 cliffster

I never smoked a single cigarette. Both my parents smoked and I just hated it. Looking around, I see what a lucky guy I am. I have friends that quit, are good for months, then start up again. The physical withdrawals are incredibly hard, but the killer is the emotional attachments. I just finished lunch, I always smoked when I finished eating lunch. I'm watching Seinfeld.. I always smoked during commercial breaks while watching Seinfeld. I can't imagine, and I'm glad. Good luck, all yall trying to quit..

My parents never smoked around me even as a small child. They smoked when they were young and even then they barely smoked. My brother and sister started smoking when they were around 16 and when I was 16 I wouldn't have any of it. My parents never drank and it was almost a taboo around my mom although we would be served wine when we turned 12 for Christmas or Thanksgiving. I'd have a glass and I would just get a sharp pain in the back of my neck.

One of Caron's great perfumes, Tabac Blond, is based on a tobacco note. It was created when French girls started to smoke following WWI, and was considered madly sexy and daring.

Doesn't work for me. I'm a generation that doesn't want to smell like cigarettes.

Something totally positive:

I recently saw John Woo's Red Cliff movies.

For those who do not know, Red Cliff, takes place during the Three Kingdoms period of China. The movie is based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Romance of the Three Kingdoms is something like a Chinese set of Arthurian legends. However, it is more historical. It is also a work that along with the I Ching and a few others is considered to form the basis of a classical Chinese education.

Contemporary to the height of Rome, after the collapse of the First Dynasty, the Chinese Empire split into three waring Kingdoms. Truly vast battles were fought. Heroes rose and fell. Kingdoms were won and lost. Great strategists showed their genius.

John Woo does one episode from this saga a great deal of justice in these movies.

The cinematography is breath taking. The acting is superb. The battles make Braveheart look like a college movie. It's Chinese, if they need 100,000 people making an army they get it...The music is breathtaking. There are simply too many scenes that radiate awesome.

The movie is as much a cultural event as it is an epic. One can just watch this as a great epic. Or one can see that this reflects a very culturally different way to look at making such an epic. The main characters in this are brilliant, educated and refined people. The great warriors are poets and calligraphers, medical doctors, strategists, generals and musicians all at the same time. But it is not done in an over the top way. This reflects a culture of honor and betrayal, learning and a non stagnant, cultured and brilliant, nobility, mobile in a violent age.

The movie is paced like a proper Asian movie. It has a story to tell, and it will fill in details and take its time. One of my favorite scenes has two strategists forming an alliance by playing music together (and the music is awesome). Another, involves a young ruler finding his courage on a tiger hunt.

For those who care about martial arts, the sword and spear work is phenomenal. For those who simply enjoy seeing fabulously beautiful Asian women being fabulously beautiful, again one can not go wrong. For those who simply want to be blown away by endless radiating waves of awesome...

Anyway the movie is called Red Cliff. Both parts add up to over four hours of pure epic bliss.

Do not get the dubbed and shortened version that was edited to appeal to an American audience with ADD.

Some people are like that. I went to a party once and this Mr. Fitness guy, marathon runner, saw me smoking and bummed a cigarette from me. I was kind of floored that he would do that. Also knew these three French students that shared a flat and they would have pack for the three of them which would last over a week.

Aaah, LVQ. Finally, someone who appreciates the Three Kingdoms period!

It was really an interesting age -- I'd say even more interesting than the Arthurian legends. Much more complicated too, of course -- A LOT of Chinese names (of people and locations) to remember (it's been a while, so I vaguely remember that Liu Bei and Cao Cao were important guys).

The novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms is supposed to be this masterpiece that holds its own against the best of the Western Canon. The problem is that the story has hundreds of characters with Chinese names, so it's hard to gather the courage to read the damn thing.

Right. But there are specific difficulties with Chinese names -- the romanization of characters is a nightmare because apparently there are no standard universal rules to follow. Sometimes the same historical figure is referred as "Xung", "Zung" or "Zong", for instance. This can really be very painful when you're trying to gather information about the Three Kingdoms period from several sources.

Anyway, thanks for the recommendation. I'll add Red Cliff to my movies list. :)

Magneto doesn't trust that the world will ever permit mutants/Jews to live. They will always come for us. Xavier believes in the possibility of tolerance and mutual respect. I've heard this argument many a time, growing up in the post-Holocaust American Jewish community. The accents are usually a bit different.

IIRC, the evil Jewish minions of Magneto are pitted against Professor Xavier's ('X', get it?) Christian mutant minions. And Wolverine is supposed to be a Christ figure.

Meh. Stan Lee always said that the X-Men was his way of exploring racism and bigotry. He's not really deep enough of a writer to come up with that crap, though.

Another marvelous thing about Red Cliff - and cultural differences:

While the women in this movie are strong and brave, and one of them is a very skilled fighter, they are all marvelously feminine.

There is none of the Hollywood need for the women to out macho the men. They are not crude. They are not caricatures of Stallone with fake breasts and bleached blond hair. The women are just as brave, subtle and intelligent as the men - but they seem like real women. Just very above average, talented, driven women.

Here is a scene that I particularly loved from Red Cliff.. I know I am gushing, but it is marvelous way to show the compassion and love for his people of Zhou Yu. This is the "personal pep talk and inspiration scene" for how he knows he must fight. How different and moving it is though from an American movie.

This is the the guqin scene, where the two strategists form an alliance through making music.

The music is breath taking.

I read that. Man, Japan is just a fractally strange place.

Of of my ex-coworkers was a six foot tall white woman who had grown up in Japan. So, basically, she was culturally Japanese. It is a very strange thing to see a tall, imposing, dare I say Amazonian woman using the moues and hand gestures of a Japanese woman.

She was really interesting to talk to about Japanese culture, because she was never really fully assimilated. When I'd complain about the media in this country, she'd say that everyone in Japan knows that every story has been edited a thousand times to avoid causing various offenses, to avoid exposing certain culturally accepted lies. In her view, the supposedly 'renegade' reporters in Japan are at about he level of the general MSM here in the US, and they have very, very few good investigative reporters. So stories like this go unchallenged for a long, long time, before someone bothers to actually investigate.

I don't go on and on about it, or obsess about it. If you think about it that way, it's even weirder. Trapped Chilean miners: 'We are fine in the shelter'

(CNN) -- Rescue workers in Chile are preparing tubes packed with flashlights, food and medicine after learning that 33 miners trapped for nearly three weeks are still alive in an underground shelter.

Officials cautioned that it could take four months to rescue the workers. But family members cheered as Chilean President Sebastian Pinera held a hand-written note pulled from the mine up for television cameras Sunday.

Written in Spanish in red ink, it read simply: "We are fine in the shelter, the 33 of us."

The note was tied to a probe authorities had lowered earlier on Sunday.

Miner Mario Gomez also sent up a note to his wife, written on tattered loose-leaf paper, CNN Chile reported.

"Dear Lila, I am well, thank God. I hope to get out soon. Patience and faith. God is great. We are going to get out with God's help. Tell everyone that I am well."

His wife told CNN Chile the note confirmed what she had been saying as she kept vigil outside the mine for weeks.

"I know my husband is fine. I know he's alive. And I know he's keeping up all the others in the mine because that's the kind of person my husband is," she said.

The workers have been trapped since the copper and gold mine caved in on August 5.

It could take as long as four months to get them out, warned Andres Sougarret, who is in charge of rescue operations.

Rescuers will send microphones down soon in hopes of learning more about the miners' conditions, he said. And authorities are also planning to send food, medicine and other necessities as needed. Eventually, rescue workers will likely drill a larger shaft, through which the trapped miners could escape.

The miners are thought to be 2,300 feet underground, inside a small shelter that would have had some water and food supplies, CNN Chile said.

Because of the mine's depth, and the instability caused by the collapse, rescue workers will need to proceed slowly and with caution.

"It'll take time. But it's not important how long it takes. What's most important is that everything ends well," Pinera said.

The San Esteban mine is located near the town of Copiapo in the Atacama region in northern Chile.

Yes. They use carbon filters, mostly, to contain odors. I think they'd get overwhelmed by cigarette smoke.

We should probably just build a spaceship with a whole biosphere on it for you, trees and everything, so that you can smoke without burning up all the oxygen.

I don't really know that much about this stuff, but if it was a humidity issue, it seems like there would be actual paper jams, which you say you aren't having.

I'm not sure what you mean by "stalling". You can always turn it off, then turn it back on again, see if that gets it going again.

I don't buy expensive printers; none of them last very long, maybe a year or so is all the life I get from a printer. You can get a decent printer for less than $100. I just replace 'em.

Also, Mandy - I don't know where your printer is, but I had a printer once on a shelf below the computer. It quit working, and I finally got a new one and when I removed the old one, I realized the problem was - cocoa puffs had been dropped into the printer - LOL - and caused it to stop working. Sad news from the Netherlands.

Amsterdam.
Anyone who has read the Achterhuis, the diary of Anne Frank, is familiar with the Chestnut tree that grew in the back garden of the house. Today the tree was sadly blown over by a gust of wind.

The tree was already in a bad shape. There were calls to cut it down cause it was becoming a hazard. A movement was set up to save the tree from being cut down. The tree got some external supports to keep it up but alas, today the end came.

The sad remains of the tree.

NY candidate: Prison dorms for welfare recipients
[Link: www.google.com...]

NEW YORK — Republican candidate for governor Carl Paladino said he would transform some New York prisons into dormitories for welfare recipients, where they could work in state-sponsored jobs, get employment training and take lessons in "personal hygiene."

Paladino, a wealthy Buffalo real estate developer popular with many tea party activists, isn't saying the state should jail poor people: The program would be voluntary.

But the suggestion that poor families would be better off in remote institutions, rather than among friends and family in their own neighborhoods, struck some anti-poverty activists as insulting.

It's still raining here in the NYC metro area. My neck of the woods (Northern NJ) got absolutely soaked yesterday, with more than 6 inches of rain reported in Ridgewood NJ, and I figure I got about 4-5 inches where I live. More rain is expected through Wednesday, though not in the amounts seen thus far.

All this rain may actually bring the region up to its average rainfall amounts for August (we'd been well below the average for the summer).

It's been about 90 minutes. If I get onto the road at the right time, I'm ahead of the traffic that's coming from farther south to the city, and I make good time. If he dawdles too much, I get jammed up, especially when traffic from the west merges. I hate getting jammed up, and he's realized I'm not the most pleasant person when jammed up so he's getting better about dawdling. Heck, even in the winter I take his socks and shoes to the car so that he can't dawdle while putting them on.

Maybe. It's hard to tell how many tadpoles actually matured. I was surprised how they develop. Once they turn into small frogs they hang out by the edge of the pond for a day or two then they start wandering around and don't return to the water. At least some of them are staying in the area so hopefully I'll have enough to breed next year.

So true. Weather seems so uneventful in some areas. I was raised in Michigan (Detroit) and never liked the weather there. It would cloud-up and look like rain for several days then, it would rain a little (maybe just a shower though) after which it would look like it might clear-up for several more days. Anyway, it seemed that way to me.

Home-grown jihadis

The ever-expanding list of U.S.-bred al Qaida operatives shows the terror group is trying to "flood the zone" of U.S. intelligence services to capitalize on what it considers a weakened America in the midst of a recession. This goal involves pushing forward an assortment of attacks and terror plots by lone wolves and poorly trained cells, experts say.

Al Qaida "has never claimed it could or would defeat the U.S. militarily. Instead, it seeks to wear us down economically through increasing expenditures on domestic security and overseas military commitments," Georgetown University Professor Bruce Hoffman said in recent congressional testimony. "Given the current global economic downturn, this message arguably now has greater resonance with al Qaida's followers and supporters and perhaps even with new recruits."

The goal behind these activities is "to consume the attention of law enforcement and intelligence in the hopes that this distraction will permit more serious terrorist operations to go unnoticed and thereby sneak in 'beneath the radar' and succeed," Hoffman said.

Al Qaida "and its Pakistani, Somali and Yemeni allies arguably have been able to accomplish the unthinkable: establishing at least an embryonic terrorist recruitment, radicalization and operational infrastructure in the United States with effects both at home and abroad," Hoffman said.

Protests, Rhetoric Feed Jihadists' Fire

Islamic radicals are seizing on protests against a planned Islamic community center near Manhattan's Ground Zero and anti-Muslim rhetoric elsewhere as a propaganda opportunity and are stepping up anti-U.S. chatter and threats on their websites.

One jihadist site vowed to conduct suicide bombings in Florida to avenge a threatened Koran burning, while others predicted an increase in terrorist recruits as a result of such actions.

oh, and i'd never actually recommend it. from what i can tell, my condition is quite abnormal...i don't have a single friend who has successfully smoked as inconsistently as i have. it's my mutant power.

(figures i'd get that, and not something more awesome)

I'm actually the exact same way. I'll smoke with my friends who do when they are over and we're having beers or whathaveyou, but as soon as they are gone so is my desire to smoke. Never had a cigarette by myself or without some alcohol involved.

And all that happens inconsistently and infrequently. For example it hasn't happened for the last 3 months or so, but will probably happen next weekend when a buddy of mine visits from Ft. Bragg.

(June 2001, Burgundy, France)

Every one of our group had rotating duties at the Chateau. Preparing meals, cleaning up, setting the table and so on. The first week I was on after breakfast duty. That meant that I was required to do food preparation for that days dinner. Due to the mix of meat eaters and vegetarians, the vegetarians won out and all meals were meatless. I had baskets and baskets of extremely fresh French vegetables to cut up each day. They had to be fresh: remember that French ice shortage. I finally found something big in France (see category: small). It was the knives in the Chateau’s kitchen. I couldn’t find a paring sized knife anywhere. Here I was cutting garlic with a saber. I even managed to slice a few shards of skin off of my index finger. Don’t tell anyone but there was meat in that evening meal.

P.S. I heard that the vegetables that I had cut up for tonight were for a pot of Ratatouille. That perked me up for a moment. Thank goodness... meat. Than I found out that there was no rat in Ratatouille. Not even a small French one (see category: small).

It's 12 minutes long, mostly dedicated to the myth and mysteries, and no so much on character development, there are some questions answered, typical of LOST, more questions are proposed... and I know the producers promised "no sequel," but then again, Disney owns the show, and Disney never said no sequel.

Yeah well I got lucky, mine is a relatively mild case and I've had it since I was an infant so my body grew up with it. It's amazing what the body can adjust to as it grows. I've had many doctors marvel at my lack of crippling in my hands even though I do experience quite a bit of pain from time to time. Not to mention the constant illness like colds, flu's and bronchitis boughts I get to suffer through on an annual basis. Good thing I'm mostly Irish or else I'd've given in a long time ago! ;)

re: #468 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

I hope you are getting the chance to write now and then.

I have the chance, have not had any inspiration to write. Actually what I need to do, and I was thinking about this this morning, I need to get off my ass and promote my current works. "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden" and "1984" both won awards in Denver, they got positive reviews in Variety Magazine, and "Rose Garden" is published, but unless I get a literary agent working for me, or submit these works to new play competitions, it's going to be only a lucky event that someone will come to me for a production.

And my other two works in the basket, "A Field of Buttercups" and "Appearances" both won Colorado Producer Guild awards and public readings, I haven't done anything to promote them.

Really, I don't need to write, I need to get off my butt and start promoting all the stuff I have in my collection of finished scripts. Overall, I have 8 complete full length plays, 4 which has had good public exposer, but the public is fickle, I need to light the fires.

I was thinking of making that a major project over this winter.

Hmm, off to re-heat leftover rotini for lunch.

Concoction sauce on it. Diced tomatoes, small can of tomato paste, minced garlic, olive oil, and basil, rosemary, parsley, jalapeno pepper fresh from the window boxes.

Chopped up two chicken sausages and browned them along with chopping up ten or so pitted kalamata olives to mix in.

Only thing I forgot to buy yesterday was a new block of Parmesan cheese. :(
(Only you start grating your own the shaker cans are never bought again.)

re: #498 Killgore Trout

I don't think they can make a sequel work. There's just not enough mystery left in the world of Lost and too many of the characters have moved on. I don't think they can recapture the magic.

Well, I'm not sure if I would like to see a sequel, since I was so prepared for the series to end like the producers promised, but I can see a lot of plot and character possibilities still available to Disney for a sequel.

Remember, the final episode but showed events happening currently, and "events" happening is some ethereal place in the future. There is a whole span of time between the current events and what happens before the rest of the characters pass on. Jack died in the current event, but there were those left on the Island, those who flew off the Island, and a whole lot of players (Mrs. Hawking for example) left off Island, and alive.

And as evident from the "LOST" lost episode I linked to, there is a lot of left over Dharma members still performing work for some mysterious reason.

And tons of myth questions were not answered. The final episode dealt mainly with character conclusions, not a lot of Island backstory.

Over all, I think they would have something to develop more story line over. And hell, I've seen a lot less material turned into sequels, good, bad or indifferent, they do it all the time.

re: #520 NJDhockeyfan

I never say one Lost episode. I heard it was kinda good.

Well, like many episodic TV shows, there were pro and cons about the finale. Those people who love character development were very pleased with the character resolutions, and LOST was always a character driven show, as evident from the writing and from constant reminders by the producers.

But, there was also a really strong, fun, myth, the mysteries surrounding the Island. The finale left a lot of that unanswered.

The producer promised that this would be the end of it. But the show is owned by Disney, and nothing is stopping Disney from developing a sequel with a new team of show runners.

And that would probably satisfy the fans of the myth, since they felt they got the short end of the story.

Hey - you asked about how my wife cooked the brussels sprouts. I asked her and here's what she did (I wouldn't be surprised if she left out something that is the real zinger.. you know how foodies are):

-Preheat oven to 400 degrees
-Rinse the b sprouts, and dry thoroughly (no excess water).
-Cut off ends and then slice each in half lengthwise
-In large pan put good layer of olive oil and turn heat to medium-medium high
-Once oil is hot place b sprouts flat side down and leave until they
brown (a few minutes)
-Transfer to baking sheet that is coated with olive oil
-Season generously with kosher salt
-Move baking sheet to oven
-Roast b sprouts for about 20 minutes, shaking sheet periodically
-Once removed from oven, drizzle lightly with balsamic vinegar and
toss throughout
-Serve hot

Enjoy!

That cannot be true. The NYC issue is just about the "insensitivity" of its location. One would think that Tennessee, or California, would be far enough away to be sufficiently sensitive.

This cannot be about hatred of Islam. This cannot be about bigotry.

*whackwhackwhack*

They take football very, very seriously in Tennessee. The Kid's goal has been to be either a running back or wide receiver for UTK but, now that he's had a chance to knock bigger guys on their butts--and, get away with it--he's liking defense better.

Oh, i know they do. CFB is my favorite time of the year! But the Vols just don't have the depth of the other top-tier SEC teams. Dooley has his work cut out for him...

The great thing about youth and HS football is that the Kid can play a lot of different positions to get a feel for what he really likes and it won't hurt how he's graded by scouts, if he's good enough to be graded by scouts.

Without doubt, I'm impressed. That's an outstanding lineup of peppers.

Thank you! My peppers always grow great every year. My tomatoes did great this year too. All the rest didn't do squat because of the lack of rain and the high heat. Last year was great.

I have a theory that peppers, tomatoes, onions, and garlic taken from the same garden make the best salsa. Something about the common soil seems to make the flavors blend perfectly.

Speaking of the poisoned fruits of poisoned trees, I just went down to the store and saw that the headline in today's WaPo is: "Nowhere near Ground Zero, but no more welcome."

It's about mosques in other parts of the country coming in for the Geller/Spencer treatment.

Some reporting on the Murfreesboro TN mosque / community center project, from that article:

"What I sense is a certain amount of fear fueling the animosity," said Jim Daniel, a former county commissioner and former county Republican Party chairman, sitting down for lunch one day last week at City Cafe. Residents worry that "the Muslims coming in here will keep growing in numbers and override our system of law and impose sharia law."

Daniel and his dining partner -- the local Democratic Party chairman, Jonathon Fagan, 32 -- say they're uneasy about the proposal but agree that Rutherford County followed the law when it approved the plans for the Islamic Center in May.

"We have to allow them freedom of religion," Fagan said with a tight smile. "It takes courage to live in a free country. We have to have the courage to do that, even if we don't agree with it."

Along with freedom of religion, people are gradually learning we also get freedom from religion.

For anyone looking for a reasonably slim, reasonably light, very good laptop, check out the Acer TravelMate TM8471-6306. The power usage is so minimal, I didn't run out of batter on a trans-continental flight. It doesn't heat up, like so many laptops do.

Philly requiring bloggers to pay $300 for a business license

Between her blog and infrequent contributions to ehow.com, over the last few years she says she’s made about $50. To [Marilyn] Bess, her website is a hobby. To the city of Philadelphia, it’s a potential moneymaker, and the city wants its cut.

In May, the city sent Bess a letter demanding that she pay $300, the price of a business privilege license.

“The real kick in the pants is that I don’t even have a full-time job, so for the city to tell me to pony up $300 for a business privilege license, pay wage tax, business privilege tax, net profits tax on a handful of money is outrageous,” Bess says.

re: #610 Aceofwhat?

Eh... Philly had that business privilege license on the books for years, and only recently began trying to impose it on bloggers because of the need for revenues, even when most blogs don't actually make their owners a dime. You can have all the advertising you want on the site - if no one visits, let alone clicks, you're not making money - and you aren't making anything to cover costs for the site (time, effort, etc.) The Department figures that the act of putting advertising on the site is proof of being a business.

The move will only further undermine the city's competitiveness as people will either opt to live elsewhere, avoid paying the tax, or demand a legislative change to the fee.

And the Department's solution - to pay annually instead of kick in the $300 lifetime fee is laughable since if you blogged more than 6 years, you'd end up paying even more.

Drive back to school two evenings a week for practice? Monitor increased calcium, protein/et cet. intake? Pump water/Gatorade down his throat? re: #538 Taqyia2Me

Sounds exactly like my lovely wife's sauce!
Yummy!!

I'm playing with the recipe. Not quite sure which direction to take it yet, or simply let it diverge into 2-3 separate sauce options (spicy, salty/tangy a'la a puttanesca sauce, or go more heavily into the herbs.)

The chicken sausage worked out nice. It was a pre-cooked chicken sausage w/jalapeno peppers from Trader Joe's. Diced, browned in a bit of olive oil, and they added a nice touch when I got a piece with a forkful of the rotini. Same general effect from getting a piece of the diced black olive or a piece of fresh parsley as well. Little burst of a different flavor on top of the general herbal/tomato goodness of the sauce.

Once one of my cookbooks explained how easy quick sauces where I simply stopped buying canned sauce. I just keep canned diced tomatoes and a few cans of tomato paste on-hand and can essentially throw something together in roughly the same time it would take to heat a jar of sauce. (And I always augmented the jarred sauce with more goodies in any case.)
