John Cole nails it, as always:
What they should have done is simple. They should have claimed victory when Obama made the modification to the mandate. When the initial mandate came out from HHS, there was a multi-day freakout, the Bishops and the prudes generated a lot of press, and Team Obama looked at things, calibrated the mandate so that so-called “religious freedom” was preserved, and the entire issue would have been taken off the table if the right had done the smart thing and just claimed victory. They could have celebrated it as a triumph of religious freedom over Obama, and could have claimed that their political might forced Obama to capitulate. He gave them an out and a political victory while maintaining a political victory for himself- he created a win/win situation for them. They could have used it to their advantage- “Obama attempted to assault religious freedom and our collective political power and might was able to make sure that religious organizations no longer have to provide contraception.” They could have made this into a big win for the team.
But instead of seizing upon it, they instead shit the bed and decided to double down, and now we have near 70% of the country looking at the Republicans like they are some kind of freak show, with their leaders introducing the Blunt and Rubio amendments and their spiritual leaders calling all women who use contraceptives sluts and prostitutes and the base doubling down and following their lead. It’s bewildering to watch. If I were Frank Luntz or the other Republican strategists I would be pulling my hair out and trying to get them into a room listening to Kenny Rogers looped for 24 hours.

This is interesting. I was reading Matt Taibbi's update to his post on Andrew Breitbart, and discovered that somebody's been recently deleting posts at biggovernment.com: Andrew Breitbart: Death of a Douche | | Rolling Stone
UPDATE: Well done, Breitbart fans, well done! In less than 24 hours you’ve hacked into my Wiki page, published my telephone number on Twitter, called the Rolling Stone offices pretending to be outraged “advertisers” (anonymous ones, who hung up before we could figure out which “ads” to pull), and then spent all night calling and texting my phone with various threats and insults, many of them directed at my family. “Better grow eyes in the back of your head,” was one; “I’m going to take a shit on your mother’s grave,” was another; a third called my wife a “piece of shit like you,” and many others called me a “pile of human excrement.”
Those last ones to me were the most interesting because that quote is lifted directly from Breitbart’s own obit of Ted Kennedy, which like me Breitbart ran just hours after his subject died. So that means the writers of these letters knew that what I did was exactly the same as what Breitbart had done, and yet they still found a way to be unironically outraged on Breitbart’s behalf. I thought: “These people don’t even get their own jokes.”
The really crazy thing is that I was sort of trying to be nice to Breitbart – the obit was at least half an homage. Not that I liked the guy, but he did have a few attractive qualities, one of which being the fact that he got a kick out of the nasty things people said about him. He even once had a plan to set up a website encouraging anti-Breitbart abuse, and was going to let it ride for a while, even spending six figures to hire an Obama p.r. flack to make anti-Breitbart posters, until finally revealing that he'd sponsored the whole thing. Would a person like that really expect someone like me to send flowers when he croaked? No way: he’d be insulted if I didn’t give him one last kick in the balls on the way out the door.
But I guess no homage is complete without a celebration of the whole man, and the whole man in this case was not just a guy who once said, “It’s all about a good laugh,” but also someone who liked to publish peoples’ personal information on the internet, hack into private web sites, tell lies in an attempt to get his enemies fired, and incite readers to threats against his targets and their families, including death threats. I left all of that stuff out of my obit, but now, thanks to you readers, that’s all in there as well, leaving, for posterity, a much more complete picture of the man.
The "death threats" link above now goes to a 404 error page.
But according to Google's cache it was still there as recently as Feb 24, 2012: [Link: biggovernment.com...]
Taibbi didn't put a date on his update, but it's clear that he must have seen the post when he wrote the update -- meaning that it was probably deleted in response to his update.

I don't think it's so much running out of ideas as it is the inability to present an existing idea in a new an interesting way.
For example, the humans vs aliens fight for the future of humanity sci-fi story has been done to death, but there are still new and interesting ways to present that story rather than say, remaking Starship Troopers.
Personally I would love to see more movies like Inception. It really made you think, made you wonder, made you look at things differently. It was a movie that was actually built for an intelligent audience, rather than the usual lame teen comedy or "lots of shit blowing up with wooden acting" summer blockbuster.

There was a certain ideal of suburban life which existed independently of anyone ever actually achieving it-- the sort of thing Betty Freidan was talking about.
Betty Friedan claimed that luxurious suburban homes were "concentration camps for women." I kind of think that a concentration camp survivor might not have agreed with her.

Meanwhile, the weak Libyan Central Government has some problems:
Video footage has been released showing graves in a British military cemetery in Libya being destroyed by what appears to be an Islamist militia.
At this point, I am going to predict that my anger at the Salafi fuckers will likely surpass the anger I had over 7/22 sometime in the next year. The reason is because of the fact I have poor emotional controls in terms of moderating feelings. This means when I feel something, I really feel it.
This is driving my opinions of what to do about Terrorism farther and farther to the right. And increasing the raw hate I have for the Salafis.

He had a business partner named in the Shirley Sherrod case (which is why it will continue), Larry O'Conner. There's also Mike Flynn, who Breitbart hired from Reason to run BigGovernment. I'm betting Flynn is still running the show at this point.
Good...so, the Sherrod case didn't die with Breitbart.

Hysterical sex is an emotion of strong affection and personal attachment.[1] Hysterical sex is also a virtue representing all of human kindness, compassion, and affection; and "the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another".[2] Hysterical sex may also be described as actions towards others (or oneself) based on compassion, or as actions towards others based on affection.[3]

That was from Larkin's 'bagua' period.
Annus Mirabilis
Sexual intercourse began
In nineteen sixty-three
(which was rather late for me) -
Between the end of the Chatterley ban
And the Beatles' first LP.Up to then there'd only been
A sort of bargaining,
A wrangle for the ring,
A shame that started at sixteen
And spread to everything. Then all at once the quarrel sank:
Everyone felt the same,
And every life became
A brilliant breaking of the bank,
A quite unlosable game.So life was never better than
In nineteen sixty-three
(Though just too late for me) -
Between the end of the Chatterley ban
And the Beatles' first LP.

If Sherrod wins and gets a substantial judgment from Breitbart's estate, I won't feel bad about that at all. Whether he was alive or dead, the money would have come from his pocket anyways; most of that money is ill-gotten booty, IMO (not necessarily illegal, but certainly shady).

Another dog's eye view.
Dog survives 53 days in wild, reunited with owner
Barbara Bagley says she never gave up hope that her dog would be found alive in the Nevada desert after the animal bolted from the scene of a crash that critically injured her and killed her husband.
But the Salt Lake City woman endured plenty of frustration until her beloved 4-year-old Shetland sheepdog, Dooley, was tracked down Feb. 18 after surviving 53 days in the wild on roadkill and scattered ranch water sources.
“I would think about Dooley constantly,” she said. “There were TV commercials with dogs that made me think about him and cry. He’s just the sweetest dog.”
The Dec. 27 single-vehicle accident on Interstate 80 near Battle Mountain, about 225 miles east of Reno, sent Bagley and her 55-year-old husband, Brad Vom Baur, to the hospital in critical condition. Their other sheltie, Delaney, was killed in the wreck. Dooley ran away and vanished.
Bagley, 48, suffered a concussion, broken ribs, a shattered wrist and two punctured lungs. As soon as she mustered up enough strength, she turned her attention to a search for her dog in the sprawling sage-covered plains and hills of northeastern Nevada.
Realizing what Dooley could mean for her recovery, dozens of Nevada volunteers responded to a Facebook plea for help in looking for him. But the search was canceled before it began after the Jan. 6 discovery of what appeared to be the dog’s remains along the interstate. The same day, her husband died.
[...]
During his ordeal, Dooley’s weight dropped from 44 pounds to 20 pounds. He was once spotted devouring a dead coyote along the roadway. A long bird bone was pulled from his throat by a veterinarian.
Since then, the dog has gradually put on weight and resumed regular walks with his owner. While Bagley is still going through the grieving process over her husband’s death and recovering from her injuries, Dooley’s presence has picked up her spirits immensely.
Go read the rest!

Intelligence doesn't fully compensate for lack of training. And Khan's ability to think likely worked against him. When seconds count, military personnel are trained to react, not think, because there isn't really time for thought. So he does not move quickly enough when something unexpected occurs, and that is a big part of his downfall. For all of his ability, Khan Noonian Singh never understood a basic fact long before drummed into the head of James T. Kirk: No battle plan survives contact with the enemy.

Arpaio's Obama investigator selling book
The lead investigator in Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's investigation into President Obama's birth certificate is selling his report as a book.
Retired detective and volunteer sheriff's posse member Mike Zullo is listed as the co-author of "A Question of Eligibility," an e-book for sale on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
The book is a copy of the investigation findings presented to the press on Thursday.
Zullo's co-author is Jerome Corsi, a well-known political conspiracy writer.
Phoenix television station KTVK reports that ( [Link: bit.ly...] Corsi denied using the sheriff as a promotional tool to sell his books and theories. Corsi supplied much of the research for the MCSO investigation.
Arpaio said at a news conference Thursday that his volunteer investigator found probable cause that the president's birth certificate was fake.

I can empathize with her, Frank. Her gender is no barrier in such a matter, as I already know what its like to have an asshole try to hurt you simply to advance himself. Granted that what happened to my wasn't nearly as bad, but my own senses of honor and justice gets me the rest of the way to outrage over what happened to her.
But at the same time, I'm also a pragmatist, and someone who doesn't like creating collateral damage when it can be avoided. Andrew Breitbart is dead, and so the message you described is now going to be badly muddied. And that means a complete victory can no longer be won. That being true, I would suggest the best solution is a settlement, though I would demand that said settlement include a full and public retraction of the story by Breitbart's media outlets.

Yeah, but you're looking at it rationally, which is a big no-no when trying to understand the wingnut mind. To them, Rush has sinned in the greatest way: He showed "weakness," he let them back him into a corner. You're right, they wanted him to engage in self-immolation, because they'd rather he be a martyr to the cause than to show any "weakness" to their enemies.

I agree. I just found it amusing to write out just how foolish they are. They think 'ruthless aggression' and 'purity' are the answers to every political problem. If this was a real war, such an attitude would end with their corpses heaped up in windrows after a suicidal attack. Sadly, in politics they don't die when they uber-FAIL, so their attitude will be around for a while yet.

The thing that the Freepers are too blind and dumb to see is that Limbaugh's "apology" was no real apology at all, since he was still lying his ass off about Fluke's testamony. He only did what he did under duress, from his advertisers and from his Premiere/CC bosses.
I hope this shit backfires on Rush big time.

re: #263 Targetpractice
Yeah, but you're looking at it rationally, which is a big no-no when trying to understand the wingnut mind. To them, Rush has sinned in the greatest way: He showed "weakness," he let them back him into a corner. You're right, they wanted him to engage in self-immolation, because they'd rather he be a martyr to the cause than to show any "weakness" to their enemies.
National Review writers have been attacking this attitude as of late, often in response to howls by Freepers and their kin. Such stupidity cannot be hammered hard enough, as it favors display over effective action. Hell, even Rick Santorum has been repeatedly booed for explaining himself in cases where he had to choose effectiveness over ideological purity.

The Canadian Federal government’s new counter-terrorism strategy has been ruffling feathers in the environmental community since it was released by Public Safety Minister Vic Toews on February 9.
The report says that the Federal government will be vigilant against domestic extremism “based on grievances – real or perceived – revolving around the promotion of various causes such as animal rights, white supremacy, environmentalism and anti-capitalism.”
While there are some "animal rights"/enviro-terrorists, are they numerous enough to be listed explicitly along with white supremacists?

They're not. I don't think you understand the topic. The government is mandating that contraceptives be covered as no copay like many other preventative medications. They're not mandating what anyone buys.

It's really like the entire right wing base has turned into replicants and robots. They all have exactly the same reactions, they all start spewing talking points in virtual unison, they all respond to facts with juvenile insults, and then they all declare themselves the winners in their own minds. Every time.
It's robotic behavior.

Did Muhammad Exist?: An Inquiry into Islam's Obscure Origins [Hardcover]
Robert SpencerBook Description
Publication Date: April 23, 2012
Are jihadists dying for a fiction? Everything you thought you knew about Islam is about to change. In Did Muhammad Exist? best-selling author Robert Spencer meticulously examines historical records, archaeological findings, and pioneering new scholarship to reconstruct what can be known about Muhammad, the Qur’an, and the early days of Islam. He uncovers evidence that calls into question fundamental assumptions made even by non-Muslims. Did Muhammad Exist? reveals:
The earliest biographical material about Muhammad dates from 150 years after the traditional date of his death.
Neither the Arab conquerors of the seventh century nor the people they conquered made any mention of Muhammad, the Qur’an, or Islam for fully six decades.
Recent scholarship indicating that the Qur’an was constructed from existing materials—including a pre-Islamic Christian text.
Numerous archaeological indications that Islam as a religion was fashioned for political reasons.
Far from an anti-Islamic polemic, Did Muhammad Exist? is a sober and unflinching look at the origins of one of the world’s major religions. While Judaism and Christianity have been subjected to searching historical criticism for more than two centuries, Islam has, astonishingly, never received the same treatment on any significant scale. In bringing to light the latest scholarship on Muhammad and Islam, Robert Spencer raises questions of global consequence.

He was just the coolest guy to hang out with, and wherever he was hanging out, that was the cool place to hang out, because then you got that sort of second-hand cool effect. You’d be hanging out with Breitbart, and your cell-phone would ring and whoever was calling would ask you where you were, and you’d say, “Oh, I’m hanging out with Breitbart.” And your friend would say, “Wow, that’s cool.”

It's a corner case in the Warrior Mystique. You're such a badass and so set on honor and principles that you should never back down or have to apologize since your side is obviously right. Doing so is showing doubt and weakness that will cause your peers to shun you.
It leads to all sort of bad places. Abuse of underlings, stupid attacks, hubris, and making decisions based solely on trivial externals rather than the reality of the situation. History is rife with examples.

The thing to consider is that, without the influence of SuperPACs, it's very likely that Romney would have had a lot harder time. His campaign was not built for the long haul, expecting big victories in the beginning to make the nomination his outright. And Newt's zombie of a campaign is being maintained only through the help of SuperPACs, else his supporters would have already gone to those still in the race, likely giving Santorum the win in Michigan.
We're basically seeing a total upending of the old order, in favor of one where whoever can make the biggest promises to the most rich folks is guaranteed at least a shot at the Big Chair.

Actually, there is indeed no credible evidence of Moses or Abraham, those are most probably mythological personages.
With Jesus though we have the gospels and Paul's epistles which are pretty damn early. Though yes, there is some small probability of non-existence, but I would disregard it.
With Smith there are a ton of contemporary documents, so it's not a good analogy.

I think there's reasonably credible evidence of the existence of Gautama Buddha as an actual person. And I've read at least one scholarly work (in a paper book, don't have link at this time) describing the historical Abraham as a Babylonian chieftain who left Ur to found a monotheistic settlement.

There's also the question of what it means for the person to have existed. There was probably some very seminal person for Buddhism, a nobleman who gave up his noble life for enlightenment, but much of the 'history' of him is clearly legendary fabrication. In five hundred years (if we survive that long) Joseph Smith's story will probably have mutated and altered as well; won't mean he didn't exist.

As for Abraham, that's just speculative literature. We don't have anything on him beyond the biblical account, and that is too far removed from the alleged abrahamic times as to be useless as a historical source.

Non Christian historical sources that speak of the man Jesus.
Tacitus in his Annals c.115 A.D.
The correspondence between Pliny the younger and the Roman Emperor Trajan 98-117 A.D.
Flavius Josephus 37-100 A.D.

Tacitus and Pliny are quite weak/late refs, which mention Jesus in relation to Christians - thus possibly simply reiterating their views.

I don't think he existed, the stories told of him are too similar to previous myths, Mithras, Zoroastrianism.

The alleged reference to Jesus in the works of Josephus is widely considered to be bogus, inserted centuries later by monk copyists who were offended that Josephus didn't mention their guy. Not entirely correct.
There are two mentions of Jesus in Josephus manuscripts. One is a shorter one, which mentions "James, the brother of Jesus, the so-called Christ". For obvious reason (the non-Christian appellation) this is unlikely to be an interpolation. So it's a good evidence of the existence of Jesus as a person, which is actually tied to another living person, James, and not simply as a guy in whom Christians believed.
The larger mention - the Testimonium Flavianum - is obviously interpolated, since it contains Christian theological elements, but it doesn't mean that it was entirely inserted, in fact, there is another version without Christological elements.

No they don't, but they do indicate a possibility that his legend was based on previous legends making them (the similar stories, such as virgin birth) poor indicators of existence.
There can be no expectation the similarities will be exact, since humans have a tendency to change stories to meet a specific purpose.

Hi Alouette,
I believe there has been questions regarding Antiquities 63-64
About this time there lived Jesus, a wise man, if indeed it is lawful to call him a man, for he was a performer of wonderful deeds, a teacher of such men as are happy to accept the truth. He won over many of the Jews and many of the Gentiles. He was the Christ, and when Pilate, at the suggestion of the leading men among us, had condemned him to the cross, those who had loved him at the first did not forsake him; for he appeared to them alive again on the third day, as the prophets of God had foretold these and ten thousand other wonders about him. And the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct to this day.
And it is suggested that this maybe more accurate:
About this time there lived Jesus, a wise man, for he was a performer of wonderful deeds, a teacher of such men as are happy to accept the truth. He won over many of the Jews and many of the Gentiles. When Pilate, at the suggestion of the leading men among us, had condemned him to the cross, those who had loved him at the first did not forsake him; and the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct to this day.'
However I am now aware that many scholars question this passage Antiquities 20.200
[The Roman governor] Festus was now dead, and [his successor] Albinus was still upon the road. So [the high priest] Ananus assembled the Sanhedrin of judges, and brought before them the brother of that Jesus who was called Christ, whose name was James, and some of his companions. And when he had formed an accusation against them as breakers of the law, he delivered them to be stoned.
Also, may I extend best wishes for your husband's health.

Sure, but not necessarily the real Jesus. That's the wrong path, IMHO. Although similar to the real path.
Very early and indepedent sources (Paul, Mark, Josephus) all mention Jesus the so-called Christ. Plus, there were already Christians, which is a evidential point in itself. Paul describes meeting James the Just, "the Lord's brother", James is also mentioned by Josephus - again these are ties to living, real people. Is it possible, in principle, that this is faked? Yes, just unlikely, and it needs to be explained how the very idea of Jesus arose and appeared in writings of these early authors.

Writing history?
the most concrete historical fact that we have about "jesus", by far, is the existence of a collection of writings about him
as far as i'm concerned, the person who "speaks" in the gospels is, for all practical intents and purposes, "jesus"
the only question is whether there was one person who spoke these words or something very much like them in judea in the first century or whether the gospels are entirely fiction
my opinion is that the first explanation is the most economical, so that's why i call occam's razor on the more complicated theory about "jesus" as a complete fiction successfully perpetrated by a completely different person or persons
493 | Lord Baron Viscount Duke Earl Count Planckton Sun, Mar 4, 2012 7:22:28pm |
re: #492 engineer cat
Again, it is a common thing that a prophet is ascribed various sayings. Surely, some of what is contained in the gospels was said by Jesus (tho maybe it was distorted), but just as many legends stuck to Jesus, so must have many things he allegedly said but actually did not.
So if you're looking for a person who "speaks" in the gospels, then such a Jesus likely did not exist.

obviously, any rational modern person cannot possibly believe that the story in the gospels is 100% history, especially considering that they sometimes contradict each other
so, it goes without saying that it is not clear what exactly in the gospels is historically accurate about the "real jesus", assuming there was one
BUT
have you ever read two or three biographies about some person well accepted as a historical personage? like, say, hitler? or john lennon? or elvis? or steve jobs?

I'm not talking about historical events (which I brought up as an analogy), but about sayings. Again, it is quite possible that historical Jesus existed - as a Jewish prophet and teacher, who was executed for some reason or another (rebellion, heresy), and yet that many, if not most sayings ascribed to him were not ever uttered by him, including the significant stuff like the sermon on the mount.
My point is that the author of the sayings does not yet amount to the historical Jesus, and in fact there might have been numerous authors among the number of Jesus' disciples, and of disciples' disciples. Then we would have a "collective Jesus" responsible for the bulk of the moral teaching in the gospels, so your approach of "the author is the Jesus" would fail in such an event, since there would be no single author.

well, now we're arguing about theories of a single approximate jesus of the gospels as opposed to many jesuses collected into a single jesus of the gospels

But existence of Jesus doesn't follow from the existence of the Sermon on the Mount. It follows from the biographical details supplied by various authors.
but i disagree with this
who was it then who wrote the sermon on the mount? who formulated the selflessness philosophy
"don't just love your neighbor - even the pagan-ass romans do that! - but also, love your enemies! wow! now that's a real spiritual challenge, ya holier-than-thou pharisee!"
whoever came up with this stuff - that's the person who is interesting

Shakespeare the Person existed regardless of whether he wrote the plays
now, why would this person be interesting to anybody????
the point is to find out who the author of the plays is, goddammit

That's a different issue, but it wasn't necessarily Jesus who formulated the Sermon. Although again, it is possible that he never said th Sermon, and yet he did formulate the selflesness philosophy in very different terms. The combinations are endless.
whoever came up with this stuff - that's the person who is interesting
Maybe he is more interesting. Or maybe they both are interesting. But that's a different issue from whether he (or even they, the author collective) can be named "Jesus" when there likely was a real, physical guy named Jesus to whom this sermon came to be attached, and those "they" were his followers and biographers.
(I'm not saying this is what happened. I have no idea, actually.)

There is a fake MLK letter about antisemitism and anti-Zionism.
Some people cite it as an important document.
If we apply your method, then it shouldn't matter to them that a physical guy named MLK did not write this letter, the author of the letter is the guy who is interesting, and so we can name *him* MLK.

re: #519 Resistance is futile. You'll be discombobulated.
That's a different issue, but it wasn't necessarily Jesus who formulated the Sermon.
the whole basis of this way of looking at it was what i was talking about earlier: a theory that there was some other person who created the fictional character of "jesus", as if he was batman or dick tracy or some other fictional personage
hardly impossible, but:
what's your evidence of that?

re: #521 engineer cat
Excuse me? Batman etc. are fictional. Jesus is (likely) not. Since I didn't make such an assertion, but actually argued against it at length, I read your request with great surprise.

we each - individually - have plenty of quotes that we are pretty sure are mlk. that's our mlk. if we choose to believe that this fake letter is real, then that becomes part of our "real" mlk as well. in fact, every single person's conception about who mlk "really" was IS LIKELY TO BE AT LEAST SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THAN OTHER PEOPLE'S
i have my own idea of who "jesus" was, which i arrive at by picking and choosing from the evidence
i don't expect other peoples "jesus" to be the same

re: #523 engineer cat
Sorry, that's some kind of post-modernism, or something. The plain fact is that MLK did not write that letter and that letter's author is in no way MLK.
Same is not excluded for Jesus.

yet you propose that the "jesus" portrayed in the gospels is not the same as some "historical jesus" that you postulate
therefore you are suggesting that the "jesus" portrayed in the gospel is possibly fictitious, like batman
it's as if you are looking for the "real batman" because you suspect that the personage portrayed in the comix is not the real batman. and i am maintaining that the "batman" portrayed in the comix is more interesting to speculate about than another possible batman who is not the same as the personage in the comix, but is for some unfathomable reason "more real"

re: #525 engineer cat
Again, wrong. Not fictitious like Batman, but fictitious like Lenin in Soviet books for children. Batman never existed in any form and sprung up from the mind of its author. The same is not true for Jesus. Or Lenin.
Very bad analogy.

Seriously? It takes several minutes googling, but that's not even the point. We're not discussing the authenticity of MLK's letter (the lack of which is established) but that various fictitious "pronouncements" can get attached to real historical persons. You know as well as I do that I could give you dozens more examples.
529 | engineer cat Sun, Mar 4, 2012 8:22:45pm |
so
the state of the argument is as i see it this:
1) clearly, the "jesus" portrayed in the gospels is to some degree fictitious
2) possibly completely fictitious, and possibly the work of more than one author
3) therefore for some reason we want to think about the possibility that there was a real person who could have been completely different than the personage portrayed in the gospels, or maybe just mostly different.
BUT IS SOMEHOW THE "REAL" JESUS
i'm telling you this line of supposition doesn't make sense to me
my idea is that there is a very interesting personage PORTRAYED IN THE GOSPELS. this portrayal is clearly at least partially fictional
i'm interested in how fictional THAT CHARACTER is, and whether there is a real historical person behind THAT CHARACTER, and if so, what it might be possible to deduce about that person
BTW, i don't believe that the character i read in any "historical biography" is 100% reality, no matter how "historically accurate" it is
there is no "history", just different degrees of fiction

the point is that there is no "real" mlk, now that he is dead
there is just every individual person's memory of mlk, none of which are likely to be exactly the same as any other person's
don't imagine for a minute that your conception of who mlk was is the true and undeniable unassailable historical fact of his life

so
the state of the argument is as i see it this:
1) clearly, the "jesus" portrayed in the gospels is to some degree fictitious
Yep.
2) possibly completely fictitious, and possibly the work of more than one author
Yep, though unlikely wholly fictitious.
3) therefore for some reason we want to think about the possibility that there was a real person who could have been completely different than the personage portrayed in the gospels, or maybe just mostly different.
That "some reason" being the very real embellishments that are common throughout literature of the period. Think of all the pseudoepigraphia, all the fake gospels and epistles (even the canonical NT is chockful of them, how many of Paul's epistles are thought to be non-authentic?). The closer you get to our time, the lesser the probability of this phenomenon. But at the time in question? Very improbable that we have the sum of Jesus' sayings as it really was given. Broken phone, bias, ideological interpolation - very common factors at the time. Even today - but moreso then. So it is absurd to just take this system of views as we have it now and say - this was the Jesus, the guy with the same name to whom it was ascribed doesn't really matter.
BUT IS SOMEHOW THE "REAL" JESUS
The historical Jesus.
i'm telling you this line of supposition doesn't make sense to me
This may be so, but this doesn't change the historical facts or methods.
my idea is that there is a very interesting personage PORTRAYED IN THE GOSPELS. this portrayal is clearly at least partially fictional
i'm interested in how fictional THAT CHARACTER is, and whether there is a real historical person behind THAT CHARACTER, and if so, what it might be possible to deduce about that person
So far so good, there's no contradiction between these two paragraphs and what I've been saying.
My point is that you can't get any one bit - like Sermon on the Mount - and extrapolate it to the "really real Jesus". What should be asked is whether or not the Sermon on the Mount is a fictional part.
BTW, i don't believe that the character i read in any "historical biography" is 100% reality, no matter how "historically accurate" it is
there is no "history", just different degrees of fiction
I agree, but that is neither here nor there in relation to this discussion.

Again, there was a real MLK. The MLK to whom certain texts belonged and others didn't. The letter in question simply didn't. So one can't take the letter in question and glean something about "the real MLK".
Same with any other fake or fictitious saying.
