Ten Things I’d Love to Tell My Younger Self
(A woman looks back at life)
I’ve learned some valuable things about life, love, and being female over the past half-century. Here is the advice I try to pass on to younger women in my life (family and friends) in the hope that it will save them some precious time:
1. You are at least ten times prettier than you think you are.
That holds true no matter how pretty you already think you are! Don’t believe me? Ask your mother/auntie/grannie if she thought she was pretty when she was twenty. She’ll say no. Then find a photo of her at that age. See what I mean?2. The only thing you should be faking is confidence.
If you don’t have it yet, pretend you do. In every new situation, pretend you’re not nervous, pretend you’re not afraid. After a few times doing this, the pretend part disappears.3. Want to try something new like painting, skiing, running your own business? Go to the library and borrow ten different books on the subject.
Skim through them all, find the ones that have the most vital information and study them. Then see number 2.4. No matter how old you get, remember what it was like to be a nine-year old girl.
Remember the feeling of freedom. If you’ve already forgotten, do a cartwheel. You can so still do one. Savior that feeling. Wake up with it every day. You’ll stay young until the day you die.5. In the same vein, cut or potted flowers are never a waste of money.
Because every time we glance at them, they remind us how much beauty there can be in the world.6. Speaking of money, starting right this moment, whether you’re twenty or sixty, you can change your finances around.
Don’t leave someone else completely in charge, whether it’s your husband, partner, parents, or banker. Become financially savvy. Financial independence gives you the freedom to walk away from many bad situations. How do you know you’re in bad situation? See number seven.7. If your stomach hurts and you haven’t got a virus, you’re in a bad situation.
Before you know what it is, your stomach always does. Give yourself some time to ponder what it might be that’s making your stomach hurt. Chances are you already do know, you just don’t want to believe it, for some reason. You can ignore advice from your friends, even your own brain, but you can’t ignore your stomach, because the stomach never lies. Oh, and by the way—drowning your stomach in alcohol won’t make it stop telling you the truth, either.8. When meeting someone new and he or she seems to be behaving like an ass**le, show compassion first.
If after you display your sincere compassion, they are still acting like an assh*le, walk away. If they follow you, call the police.9. Wear sunscreen on your face, neck, and hands every day, winter and summer.
I don’t care how dark your skin naturally is. Wear it. You’ll remember me when you look in the mirror at age fifty. Always keep in mind that Your body is directly connected to your spirit. Look after your body. Exercise, floss, and brush your teeth. Put nothing in your body that can permanently harm your spirit, including the wrong man.10. And if you are in bed with a man and he's the right man:
... meaning your stomach doesn’t hurt, he’s smiling at you, he knows your name, he’s not drunk, and neither are you—for godsakes—enjoy yourself. He is not at all thinking about how fat your thighs look.

A little quote to end the day.
Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel "Pick up your shovel, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the promised land." Nearly 75 years ago, Roosevelt said, "Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a camel, this is the promised land." NOW, Obama is going to steal your shovel, kick your asses, raise the price of camels, and mortgage the promised land.
nite nite.

That second picture looks like Sedona....those are wild. Any idea what kind of weather pattern causes those?
Wind going over a mountain has the Bernoulli effect, following Boyle's Law the pressure drops, like air over the top of an airplane wing. When the pressure drops the air cools, if the humidity is right it will condense into a cloud in the air over the mountain or down wind.

Which reminds me, China's preponderance of male children is causing more and more problems as time goes on.
Surplus of Males and Runaway (with the Bride-Price) Brides:
The WSJ has a story today that we are increasingly likely to hear in some version. The one-child policy and preference for boys has led to a well-documented shortages of marriageable women in China, particularly in some parts. In this story, brides marry rural men, extracting a bride-price, and then running away with the money. There are other things that happen too - abductions of women in rural villages, the renting out of a farmer's wife to other farmers who cannot find wives. It is a social issue that is only now beginning to hit adult Chinese society in full force. There is an extremely important and good book on the implications of this surplus of males in China, Bare Branches: The Security Implications of Asia's Surplus Male Population, by Valerie Hudson and Andre den Boer (2004). (Demographer Nicholas Eberstadt has written on the economic implications of this for regions of China and India, as well as a superb series - published in Spanish, as it happens - on European health and retirement, in the Madrid Revista de Libros.) As the WSJ article notes:
Thanks to its 30-year-old population-planning policy and customary preference for boys, China has one of the largest male-to-female ratios in the world. Using data from the 2005 China census — the most recent — a study published in last month's British Journal of Medicine estimates there was a surplus of 32 million males under the age of 20 at the time the census was taken. That's roughly the size of Canada's population.
Now some of these men have reached marriageable age, resulting in intense competition for spouses, especially in rural areas. It also appears to have caused a sharp spike in bride prices and betrothal gifts. The higher prices are even found in big cities such as Tianjin.
A study by Columbia University economist Shang-Jin Wei found that some areas in China with a high proportion of males have an above-average savings rate, even after accounting for factors such as education levels, income and life-expectancy rates. Areas with more men than women, the study notes, also have low spending rates — suggesting that many rural Chinese may be saving up for bride prices.
A moderate libertarian like me has read Heinlein, of course, and even read long sections of The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress aloud to his adoring, or anyway somnolent, child until she took over and finished it herself. So my operating assumption has generally been that a shortage of females in a suitable place - a penal colony on the moon, for example - would mean that women would be able to command a suitably high marriage price, and contract for favorable plural marriage conditions. My (lapsed) Mormon background rendered me quite unoffended by the concept of plural marriage as such.

Driving only, but I'm worried about losing my disability bennies if I earn too much. I finally got my court date, I'm flying back to PA for the hearing rather than move things out here to NV. If you're on your new Mac, go to system preferences, set the correct time zone, then go to Date & Time, check the "Set date & time automatically" checkbox, and select "Apple Americas/U.S.(time.apple.com)" as your source for automatic time checking.
From what I've seen when timing my "Today in History" posts, the LGF servers must be using that exact same time!
Notice that the June 6th Today in History post was done at exactly on the hour (sometime I'm a second late, but that's still good!)?

Red Barchetta
By Rush
My uncle has a country place, that no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm, before the motor law
And on sundays I elude the ’eyes’ and hop the turbine freight
To far outside the wire, where my white-haired uncle waits.
Jump to the ground
As the turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind,
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me, an old machine ---
For fifty-odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream
I strip away the old debris, that hides a shining car
A brilliant red barchetta, from a better, vanished time
I fire up the willing engine, responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel, I commit my weekly crime...
Wind in my hair ---
Shifting and drifting ---
Mechanical music ---
Adrenalin surge ---
Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware
Suddenly, ahead of me, across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air-car shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires, to run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley as another joins the chase
Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud
With fear and hope, I’ve got a desperate plan
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded
At the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle
At the fireside...

June 6, 1944, now 65 years. Honor their memory!
From [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]
"The Normandy Landings were the first operations of the Allied invasion of Normandy, also known as Operation Neptune and Operation Overlord, during World War II. The landings commenced on June 6, 1944 (D-Day), beginning at 6:30 British Double Summer Time (H-Hour). In planning, D-Day was the term used for the day of actual landing, which was dependent on final approval. The assault was conducted in two phases: an air assault landing of American, British and Canadian airborne troops shortly after midnight, and an amphibious landing of Allied infantry and armoured divisions on the coast of France commencing at 6:30. The invasion required the transport of soldiers and materiel from the United Kingdom by troop carrying aircraft and ships, the assault landings, air support, naval interdiction of the English Channel and naval fire-support. There were also subsidiary 'attacks' mounted under the codenames Operation Glimmer and Operation Taxable to distract the Kriegsmarine and the German army from the real landing areas.[3] The operation was the largest single-day amphibious invasion of all time, with 160,000[4] troops landing on June 6, 1944. 195,700[5] Allied naval and merchant navy personnel in over 5,000[4] ships were involved. The landings took place along a 50-mile (80 km) stretch of the Normandy coast divided into five sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword."

A first stab at a new Contract with America: Size Matters
If returned to a majority in each house, within 100 days, bring a vote on bills to:
1. 3. Reduce those corporate taxes which stunt job growth and wages by half over a period of three years.
This will create a demand for labor, skilled and unskilled, as well as management.
2. Reduce the tax code over a period of three years to the size a popular novel.
Only the tax lawyers will object, and the good ones will keep their jobs regardless.
3. For every page of new law enacted, strike two pages of law from the books.
Fundamental to this is the recognition that most laws enacted are only specific applications of existing general laws, which in fact weaken those general laws. Leave it to the Executive to act quickly in changing situations, and to the Judicial to reconcile laws and actions with the constitution.
4. Reduce federal employment rolls by one-third over a period of three years.
See number one.
5. Reduce upper-level education funding by one-third over a period of three years.
Tuition costs, administrative costs, dorm costs, and the cost of books all increase because the pay agent (the student) is not actually paying the bill--the taxpayers are, and there is no incentive to efficiency in the price system of higher education. As structured now, higher education is a reverse market where the demand is for paying students, and the supply comes from the taxpayers.
6. Reduce lower-level education funding by one-third over a period of three years.
Yes, elementary through high school. Vote on this along with teacher AND administrative competence requirements, which are not to be based on student grades, although grades may be considered among many other factors by the assessing body. Decades of funding increases yield only falling scores and larger gov't employee unions. Don't keep feeding this non-performing pig--send it to the fat farm.
7. Impose an immediate moratorium on management fads in the federal bureaucracy, and require a one-size-fits-most system to cover nine of ten employess within three years.
Admit that the federal bureaucracy is just that, and stop trying to run it like a company. Limit its waste by curtailing its size, rather than devoting a shocking amount of work to a permanent-change system of federally funded self-employment as management fad consultants. This chews up much more of the federal budget than people realize, as a culture of unceasing improvement has turned into a sizeable percentage of federal employees who do nothing but re-organize other federal employees, without end.
8. Agree upon a list of issues which are important but which will *not* be acted upon within the next three years.
Prepare a subsequent "Contract with America" to address those issues.

In a recession, proposals to increase unemployment by millions of government workers will not be well-received. Selecting arbitrary numbers of government workers to cut also doesn't work well. Why do you say one-third instead of, say, half, or 2/3?
Focus instead on programs to cut or restructure. Example: replace all social welfare programs with cash payments. Discussed in detail by Charles Murray in his book, "In Our Hands: A Plan to Replace the Welfare State": [Link: www.amazon.com...]
Or how about Murray's proposal to enrich high school education, and reducing its duration to tenth grade:

Can I ask-- What's Murray's argument for reducing its duration? This is an honest request for information; I haven't read the book and I'm curious.
I'm all for enriching highschool education and I think it's essential that we do so--I guess I'm just deeply sceptical that we can enrich it *and* cut its duration at the same time.

Me. The other picture was me in 2002. And that other picture was me all made up for a part in a show, so my hair was dyed and my facial hair was dyed and I had makeup on to make me look a little more ruddy, versus my normal really pale white. The President and Michelle were running 20 minutes late.
While walking on a long path to the ceremony, Michelle was unsmiling, with furrowed brow, ignoring people along the way.
The President was wearing a black suit, and was smiling greeting people along the way.
Michelle looked angry, not just somber.
And the dress and belt ensemble was another glaring faux pas.

Murray thinks that high school should be the last formal schooling for those children who are below average, and that its quality should therefore be dramatically improved. He thinks college should be reserved for gifted students who can actually benefit from it.
For below-average pupils, tenth grade is enough. Many of them drop out after that point anyway. Get them into vocational training where they can master a skill or trade, and lead happy, productive lives.

From Publisher's Weekly, reviewing Murray's "Real Education":
"Murray, coauthor of The Bell Curve, believes our educational system's failures stem from the fundamental lie that every child can be anything he or she wants and that such educational romanticism prevents progress. Four simple truths, he asserts, would prove better: children have different abilities, half of the children are below average, too many children go to college, and America's future depends on the gifted. Murray takes care with his first point, discussing various types of abilities instead of the oft-maligned I.Q. measure; however, he does believe that test scores reflect ability. He argues that there are only a limited number of academically gifted people and these are America's future leaders, that only this elite can enjoy college productively and that the nongifted shouldn't be channeled by their high school counselors into training for that college chimera, which wouldn't make them happy anyway. Further, he argues, if the Educational Testing Service created certification tests covering what employers want applicants to know, these would become the gold standard for applicants, rather than college degrees."

It looks as if he thinks he can tough it out - the Labour MPs are more interested in keeping their trotters and snouts in the trough for as long as possible, instead of thinking of the country.
It'll be quiet over the weekend because everybody is waiting for the results of the European elections, which will come out on Monday - thats because the elections took and take place on different days in different countries.

Thank you--, I thought it might be something like that. I have to say I'd agree; one of the most destructive ideas we have here is that "everyone" has to go to college--no matter what college.
I think we'd be better off with a system where people get vo/tech training at 16 or so and college is available to all those who merit it. Right now we've got people taking out huge loans and forced to take classes in all sorts of things when all they really want (for example) is an accounting degree or similar.
Further, he argues, if the Educational Testing Service created certification tests covering what employers want applicants to know, these would become the gold standard for applicants, rather than college degrees."
I'd say the pressure there has to be top down, from employers to ETS.

In almost 40 years of being involved in the regional entertainment business, here and in many other cities and states in the past, the best performances, no matter what the medium, is always the ones where you have a crew of really friendly people.
Entertainment is a tribal, ritual thing, requiring the cooperation of many people, all at the same time, usually live, and really, egos have no place in the process.
And speaking of the "process," I have to head down to the theatre. We have a concert tonight and I have an early call to get things ready before noon.
See you all later this weekend.

re: #295 iceweasel
The historical problem in education is that employers formerly used IQ tests to determine aptitude for a job. The tests were attacked as biased against minorities, so they were abandoned. College degrees started to replace IQ tests as the key employment credential. That created a demand for a college diploma from people who lacked any real interest in college except as a credential for employment. That, in turn, debased college as the diploma mills sprang up.
Murray really is arguing for a new way to credential pupils that avoids their having to bankrupt themselves by paying for an expensive college education they don't need, aren't interested in, and will never use. Improving the quality of high school, and limiting it to Tenth Grade for graduation, could accomplish that.

One quick easy solution
BRING BACK VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOLS
When I was a teen, oh those mant decades ago, the kids that didn't want to go to college after high school, or already knew they wanted to work in a trade were offered Vocational High School instead of the regular academic/ college prep one. They still had to take and pass English and Math, but then they were trained in a host of "blue collar" fields
plumbing
carpentry
auto mechanics
electrical
Too many kids are in high schools today that
A) don't really want to be there but it's mandatory
B) have no aspirations to further their education after high school
which leads to
C) not really being trained for anything after graduation

I thought Gordon Brown actually gave a very moving speech. I get the impression, that some of these words have crossed Obama's lips for the very first time. Hi DT! I thought he said the Nations from which those forces came were not perfect. Gee, I'm glad he told me that or I would never have guessed.
Actually, you may be right, it may have been the forces because Blacks still served in segregated units at the time, none of which, to the best of my memory, took part in D-Day. So of course, to President Obama, they couldn't, by nature, be perfect. Indeed Women didn't serve either, further making those forces even more imperfect. Just a bunch of now old or dead White men did it all.

From Publisher's Weekly, reviewing Murray's "Real Education":
"Murray [...] argues that there are only a limited number of academically gifted people and these are America's future leaders, that only this elite can enjoy college productively and that the nongifted shouldn't be channeled by their high school counselors into training for that college chimera, which wouldn't make them happy anyway. [...]
When I was growing up, the only education required to become a bank teller was a high school diploma. Then they started asking for the "maturity certificate" (an additional examination required to enter college --- Belgian universities in those days only had entrance exams for engineering, the 50%+ flunking rate in the freshman year was then as now the de facto entrance exam).
High schools reacted by basically giving the maturity certificate to any high school graduate, no questions asked. Then banks started asking for what in the USA you call an associate's degree.
Now they're up to asking for college degrees for a position that basically just requires the three Rs and some common sense. Being a bank teller has not become that much more complex.
I thought I had gotten pretty lousy high school education. Then I went to graduate school in the USA, met products of the US public school system, and could not believe how little they knew about anything outside the field of their college major. (The Murray argument for compressing a 12-year ES+MS+HS education into 10 years was made more than a decade ago by Newt Gingrich: he said 12-year high school was basically "subsidizing dating".)
The brutal truth is that "college education for all" will:
(a) basically be a massive rent-seeking scheme for universities (and the New Class elements employed there)
(b) do a disservice to those who are not able to benefit from it
(c) will debase the "diploma coin" to the extent that employers will start insisting on advanced (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) degrees instead of 4-year college degrees (in the hard sciences we're basically there already), or that large corporations will start developing their in-house "post-college remedial programs" (this is starting already)
(d) will result in even more unemployable graduates in "Luftgeschaeften" such as postmodern literature studies, and not necessarily more in the demanding science and engineering subjects in which a shortage of graduates is developing.

Daily Presidential Tracking Poll
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows that 34% of the nation's voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-four percent (34%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of 0. That’s the highest level of strong disapproval and the lowest overall rating yet recorded (see trends).
The President’s ratings have slipped since General Motors filed for bankruptcy to initiate a new government bailout and takeover. Just 26% of Americans believe the GM bailout was a good idea and nearly as many support a boycott of GM products. It remains to be seen whether the dip in the President’s numbers is a temporary reaction to recent news or something more substantive.
The Presidential Approval Index is calculated by subtracting the number who Strongly Disapprove from the number who Strongly Approve. It is updated daily at 9:30 a.m. Eastern (sign up for free daily e-mail update). Updates also available on Twitter.
Overall, 54% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President's performance so far. Forty-six percent (46%) disapprove. For more Presidential barometers, see Obama By the Numbers and recent demographic highlights.

Agreed with everything else as well, just wanted to highlight this bit. The diploma coin is already debased and the result is what you mention: the goal posts move. Employers demand either further qualifications or develop in house standards. Going back to your point b--"do a disservice to those who are not able to benefit from it"-- Yes, and this does a further disservice to them, because they believed that the 4year degree, from anywhere, would be the ticket in. Not so much.

A nice rant, FB, but it's nothing new, even deToqueville noted that Americans (in the early 19th century) believed education was the fix for all things.
Let me take your rant from the other side. Employers are not even willing to pay for more or better education - the degree requirements are "dissatisfiers" that you must not fail, rather than something that marks you as having any virtue. Those engineers you don't see graduating - are facing falling wages, and made a rational decision to go elsewhere.
Whatever the problems with education, it's not the schools that are at fault, or at least not alone. Though I certainly agree, American k-12 education should offer more fast-paced tracks for the better students.

Granted, at times they'll be able to get A seat in A parliament, but one seat out of say 300 shouldn;'t be a problem

i was working on our church history and wanted to talk to one of our oldest members, who was also a veteran. No problem - he lived right across the street, and the summer months would find him selling fruits and vegetables in his roadside stand. So I just walked over there, sat down, and talked to him.
"Would you like to see my Purple Heart?" He asked. Certainly! This was a surprise, I had never known that Mr. Lewis had been injured. So he walked inside and came back a few moments later with a small box.
The medal was perfect - it looked like it had been made last week, not 60 years ago. He had the full sized medal that you wear on a dress uniform, the bar that goes on an everyday uniform, and the small pin that you can wear in a business suit's lapel.
"I was injured on D-Day," he said without my asking. "We came of the LST, the three guys in front of me died as soon as the gate came down. I figured I had better get off of there quick, so I jumped off, but we weren't as close to the shore as they had figured. I went straight to the bottom, but I swam back up and bobbed along until I got to the beach. I made it about two steps before I was shot."
"Wow." (What would you say if you were 21 years old and hearing this tale for the first time?)
"Somehow the medics got me out of there... I woke up in a hospital back in England, got that Purple Heart, and after I got better they sent me back. I was standing by the side of a road, reading a map and trying to figure out exactly where we were when some SOB shot me in the back of the leg! Back to the hospital, and I got a little oak leaf cluster on my Purple Heart to show that I had been wounded twice."
That was also the day I had my first adult beverage, as me and Mr. Lewis shared a little Jack Daniels for his buddies who are still on that beach.

Oh, my post is just an early morning ramble, I don't mean to disagree with your suggestions, was just set off a bit by the mention of the "engineer shortage".
My real rant would be about the shortage of management talent, from first-line to CEO, in modern corporations. It's almost like they demand stupidity from the staff, not performance, and certaintly not intelligence. American business today feels so, so different from even the early 1980s, much less anything earlier. And this gets reflected down into education as well.

Well, as always, it's your choice my friend. I talk about my cancer because the first time I mentioned it out here, in July of '05, I felt that I was in a community of friends - some more friendly than others! - and I was still in shock. But comments and a blizzard of e-mails let me know that other folks suffering from terminal illnesses, were glad I spoke out and said it gave them the courage to write to me and to talk with family members and friends about their own conditions.
I couldn't very well stop discussing it thereafter, could I?
I pray for you and wish you the finest and best of luck my friend.

What I witnessed in the mid 90's till about 3 years ago was that there were too MANY layers of "management", talented or not. Corporations were "middle heavy". The feild wanted something done it had to go through eleventy sumfin layers of management before it came back down to the field as approved. By that time the initioal problem had either doubled, or the project was now obsolete, or a competitor more streamlined had taken it over.

Obama's speechwriters must have a bunch of stock phrases that they have to work into various speeches, regardless of whether the speech calls for it or not. I'm surprised someone hasn't put together a website so as to create a random speech generator - using all of his stock phrases.

Never mind that on so many of the occasions on which he speaks it isn't about him, but on the actions of others who fought against evil (D-Day) who is supposed to be honoring.
As for his supposed ability to give speeches, let's just say I'm not impressed. The media loves him, but that's because they wanted to see him elected. His qualifications were never made the issue, despite the fact that he had none (other than being Not Bush). If the media gave even a half moment's notice to his speeches, they'd see the same empty and vaucous self-references that suggest that he's actually quite insecure because he has to puff up his own actions based on what others in his own family have achieved (like the great uncle). Throwing in anecdotes is part and parcel of politics, but with Obama, it's a grating experience since it's entirely predictable - even when it shouldn't be. They don't make his speeches memorable for their content, and the only history being made is that he's the President and he gave a speech. That's a significant failing in my book.

PART I: OUTLINE OF OPERATION OVERLORD
TAB I: OUTLINE OF TACTICAL PROBLEM1. OBJECT—The ultimate mission of the Commanding General, ETOUSA, is the total defeat of Germany. The object of Operation OVERLORD is to mount and carry out an operation with forces and equipment established in the United Kingdom and with target date as designated, to secure a lodgement area on the Continent from which further offensive operations can be developed. This will be part of a concerted assault upon German occupied Europe from the United Kingdom, the Mediterranean and Russia.
2. GENERAL INFORMATION—The operation will be executed in two phases:
Phase I—The assault and capture of an initial lodgement area, including the development of airfield sites in the CAEN area and the capture of CHERBOURG.
Phase II—Enlargement of the area captured in Phase I, to include the Brittany peninsula, all ports south to the Loire (inclusive) and the area between the Loire and the Seine.
Phase I and some parts of Phase II will be executed by U.S., British and Canadian Forces assigned or attached to 21st Army Group.
At a time to be designated by the Supreme Commander, the First U.S. Army Group, as such, will take over certain areas, missions and U.S. Forces then under 21st Army Group.
3. ALLIED FORCES AVAILABLE—On the target date it is estimated that there will be available in United Kingdom:
Land Forces—2l U.S. divisions (13 Infantry, 6 Armored, and 2 Airborne), 17 British divisions (l0 Infantry, 5 Armored, and 2 Airborne) and supporting troops of both Forces.
Air Forces—331 U.S. Squadrons (214 in Eighth [Strategic] Air Force, and 117 in Ninth [Tactical] Air Force) and 220 British Squadrons. Figures for each Air Force include squadrons of all types.*

Watched a bit of the D-Day ceremony.
Sigh.

re: #373 sattv4u2
El Biggo Banco where I'm currently working has way too many layers of management, it's thoroughly ridiculous, as the intro week will tell you in any management theory class. There is no contribution of any kind from the middle seven or eight layers, and heck, I'm pretty sure my second-level manager is clueless about the problems I'm addressing or the solutions I'm pursuing.
The problem in a nutshell is that the management style at all levels is to manage upwards. Nobody cares what goes on beneath them. So the worker bees are supposed to be "self-managing". That don't happen. And it don't happen because someone down there is managing, or no work happens, and if they are managing without recognition then they are also doing it without pay, and nobody does anything without pay. Nor should they, not as part of a profit-seeking corporation. Anyway, those that try are seen as threats or misfits because obviously, the way to be promoted is to brown-nose up not worry about actual work, that's for the losers and lifetime worker-bees, marks you as not management material.

I have a little story stashed somewhere about the 'PLAN'.
Something like this...In the begining the plan came down and the troops said this is shit! Next level said it stinks, by the time it got back to management the plan was found to be like fertilizer and aid growth. This is how the PLAN became POLICY.
Siegfried Sassoon's "The General":
"Good-morning; good-morning!" the General said
When we met him last week on our way to the line.
Now the soldiers he smiled at are most of ’em dead,
And we’re cursing his staff for incompetent swine.
"He’s a cheery old card," grunted Harry to Jack
As they slogged up to Arras with rifle and pack. But he did for them both by his plan of attack.

Hmmm. I just went back and sure enough this was what I said in my #343
Oh and for those who may be tempted to say something unpleasant about Mrs. Obama, I did notice that when she and the President were walking to the Memorial stand, he was smiling and waiving, as if on the campaign trail and Michelle pulled his arm and muttered something and he immediately stopped the smiling and waiving - I think she reminded him of where he was and why he was there.
If so, thank you Mrs. Obama.

Not really. For years pols showed up at funerals to "pay their respects" and would walk around all somber shaking everyones hand, kissing cheeks and telling everyone what great guy "Harry" was (even though the only way the pol could tell which one was "Harry" is becuse "Harry" was the only one reclining)

The thing with Obama is that I get the sense that he read different history books than I did, watched different movies, attended alternative math classes - and therefore I distrust most of what comes out of his mouth.
I also got the distinct impression that when he said the reason we talk about D-Day is that victory seemed so improbable, that he himself would not have ordered an invasion against the odds.

I think lawhawk's idea of a speech generator is great. (I can't remember who made the comment, but it would be a good topic for Mad-Libs, too.) But that's the problem - you'd have to spend a bunch of time listening to him talk about himself, and his remarkable life story, and how he single-handedly outlawed "torture". And then there was the bit about how he hoped that his election would have elevated America's standing in the world.
I'm not sure how anyone inclined to take on such a project would be able to do it without "delivering street pizza", as they say.

Its not that, its that it makes no sense for them to supplement out crew. We're completely crewed by civilians making civilian wages. I'm surprised the Unions that supposedly bargain for us (SIU for unlicensed, MEBA for licensed engineers, MMP for licensed mates) aren't raising a stink about it.
They should be used to supplement Navy billets, not civilian billets. All they do is slow us down (they're actually out there on the UNREP teams working the winches, etc...). Normally we run with a Navy complement of 2-4. One Navy Chief, then 1-3 enlisted OS's (Operations Specialists), just to be phone talkers.

Pretty much. No matter how good your plans are, you've got to rely on people and lines of communication to get them to work. And the enemy won't be following your plans either. (They don't teach this at Revisionist U, apparently.)

Interesting week. Got the spa fixed, cost of the part used less than $2, cost of aggravation considerably more.
Central heat pump expired. Compressor dead as a what-ever-your-figure-of-speach-may-be and, since it's an 18 year old system we might as well replace the whole system to the tune of $6K. So I've been looking for someone to finance the new system so I don't have to turn loose of cash. Got that done and I must say that it isn't as easy as it used to be. Might have been easier if I could show some income, but nonetheless I got it done.
Wife-woman's on the phone with Daughter. This week's line-up at the Saturday morning meeting was Michael Jordan, Trace Adkins, Ben Stiller, Smokey Robinson, Miley Cyrus, and some people she didn't know.
Beautiful weather this week in NW Arkansas. Daytime highs in the low 70s, nightime temps in the 50s. I that would hold I'd never replace the central air.

The only thing I can figure is with the fleet being whacked there are no reserve FFs/DDs for them to go and do training on. I was in Rhode Island in the mid 80s and they had two reserve FFs and one DD for the reservists to do their 2 weeks on. I have seen that the navy has been using the Spruance class DDs for target practice instead of making some of them reserve components. Must be the damn budget.

As the far right is poised to make gains in Europe.....
Revisionists challenge D-Day story
A revisionist theme seems to have settled on this year's 65th anniversary commemoration of the Normandy landings.
...
And far from being universally welcomed as liberators, many troops had a distinctly surly reception from the people of Normandy. The reason for this was simple. Many Normandy towns and villages had been literally obliterated by Allied bombing.
....
According to American historian J Robert Lilly, there were around 3,500 rapes by American servicemen in France between June 1944 and the end of the war."The evidence shows that sexual violence against women in liberated France was common," writes Mr Hitchcock.
"It also shows that black soldiers convicted of such awful acts received very severe punishments, while white soldiers received lighter sentences."

I agree that he seems to be coming to some realizations, ideas and facts that he's never allowed himself to absorb before. He seems to have increased respect for some individuals in the military. But he still tried to pawn off the war injured on private insurance. That still galls me.

Obama's speechwriters must have a bunch of stock phrases that they have to work into various speeches, regardless of whether the speech calls for it or not. I'm surprised someone hasn't put together a website so as to create a random speech generator - using all of his stock phrases.
"How does Obama keep up his hot streak of speeches? The Daily Beast analyzed his most famous speeches to crack the code behind the president's rhetoric. Our step-by-step guide for turning even the most divisive debates into an inspiring call for unity.
President Obama has faced his share of tough issues and audiences over the years, but at every turn he's managed to defuse tension with a well-timed speech. Already he's receiving rave reviews for this morning's address in Cairo, Egypt, on America's relationship with the Muslim world. But how does he do it? We analyzed Obama's most famous speeches to bring you this handy instruction manual."

The BNP's victory in the ward, with 30% of the vote, buoyed local activists' hopes of getting the party's leader, Nick Griffin, elected as an MEP on Sunday night. He needs around 8% of the vote to take a north-west seat, against the 6.4% he polled in 2004.

It looks like Supreme Fubar & Co. were unimpressed with Obama's speechifying - Talking All That Jazz
Wa-alaikum-Assalam, President Barack Hussein Obama.
Following WWII the Nazi leaders accused of mass murder and aggression were put on trial at Nuremburg and were either executed or were imprisoned for life.
Numerous speeches by “free” German presidents following WWII have failed to stop the constant bombardment of the world with propaganda movies against the Nazi party –which have been also designed to shame modern Germans into a corner.
The Allies having made unbelievable profits out of German engineering design, medical advances, space research and aeronautics, not to speak of financial strategies and social development plans are still at it through their cheap mouthpieces to fool the world into believing that such technological excellence belongs to their elite and came from them.
The contributions to humanity of an entire nation that included almost everything we know about quantum physics have been dismissed by one word: Nazi!
It is foolhardy for a US President to come to our region in the false belief that his collection of words alone –no matter how eloquent- can take the place of firm action against those of his countrymen whose genocidal, extremist, prejudiced and biased ideologies have blighted and in most cases annihilated entire world communities.
[...]
Your words Mr Obama are all good and well; but we feel we must remind you that this so-called new beginning for the world following the Second World War came after a purge of international criminals.
The most recent crimes committed by the racist-Zionist association in the Middle East, has led to one million Iraqi deaths alone. In Palestine children are bombed to shreds and burned alive by phosphorus munitions.....
Somehow I get the feeling those fists are clenched tighter.

A recurrent theme in Obama's life is his involvement with angry people. his grandfather was angry. Rev. Wright, Michelle. It's a clue to his beta-maleness.
that beta-maleness is noticed by the enemy.
it inspires them and emboldens them.
o's sucking up and apologizing everywhere is applauded for one reason only.
the sheer joy of our enemies observing his weakness and naivety.

What's left is that Obama hasn't a blipping clue about the historical facts.
He plays fast & loose with the facts. When he was at Cairo University he talked of Jefferson's Koran that Ellison swore in on.
The implication was that Jefferson had great respect for the Koran.
In fact he only had it to read so that he could understand the Jihad that the Ambassador to the Court of St> James from Tripoli spoke of.

Well I've read that, especially since Teddy called on ALL employers of any size to offer health care insurance to their employe(es) or face a stiff penalty and a bunch of other crap, WITHOUT offering a single piece of advice as to how to fund this new Health Care proposal, that several heavy hitter Dems - including the one who is Chairman of the Health Care subcommittee or whatever it's called, said Ted's is a draft, draft of a proposal.
It is apparently not going over very well with a lot of Dems.
That being said, the Democratic Party now owns not only the House and Senate (since 2006) but also the White House. Win, lose or draw, this is all on them.

623 | realwest Sat, Jun 6, 2009 9:23:39am |
Hmmm.
51% Rate Obama’s Leadership Skills Good or Excellent
Fifty-one percent (51%) of U.S. voters say President Obama is a good or excellent leader. While still positive, that number is down from 55% last month and is the lowest level found since he took office in January. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 27% of voters now see him as a poor leader, up three points from May and also the highest percentage of disapproval since his inauguration.
It's still to early to say whether Obama's leadership numbers this month are a statistical blip or the beginning of a trend.
Today’s results in the Daily Presidential Tracking poll show the president receiving the highest level of strong disapproval and the lowest overall rating recorded since he took office.

Death is real and waterboarding produced information that prevented the murder of innocents, a both military and non-military. In a recent article, I think it was Time magazine, it described how she called her White House staff around and introduced them to people she had brought from Chicago including electricians and other service people. She told her staff that their success would be judged on whether they knew the names of her Chicago people, and not the other way around. The way it was phrased was threatening, ominous and rude.
This is completely inaccurate. The story was that she told her professional staff that they would be judged by whether they learned the names of the people who routinely work in the White House as maids, butlers, kitchen staff and other service personnel. You can look it up.

So I assume that some have already noticed how Google has chosen to honor the 65th anniversary of D-Day with a special logo... um, honoring the 25th anniversary of the silly "Tetris" video game?
I've tried to avoid jumping on the Google-bashing bandwagon over the years; but this example really does seem egregious.
As I already pointed out in the spinoff links, none of the other search engines (not evenDogpile) was honoring it when I checked. Unspeakably sad.

yes, that is the point. ask yourself if you would want such a balled up angry person, as wab for a friend. i would never have a friend like her. you would never hear the end of all the inequities she has endured, all the times she was made to feel like she didn't belong, all the hatefulness directed at her.
she created her own reality. of course no one would want to be around her.
angry demanding people w/ a victim mentality are insufferable.
You can get a sense of just how angry she is and how little she appreciates what she has in this video. This is material from the Brian Williams interviews that didn't appear in the TV show. Watch all the way to the end.
