Ambassador Speaks to Last 73 American Survivors of the March
The Japanese ambassador to the United States apologized in person today to the 73 surviving POWs of the Bataan Death March in the Philippines in April 1942 during World War II.
"We extend a heartfelt apology for our country having caused tremendous damage and suffering to many people including prisoners of war, those who have undergone tragic experiences in the Bataan peninsula the Corregidor Island, Philippines and other places," Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki said at the last convention of the American Defenders of Bataan & Corregidor POWs of the Japanese during World War II.

Das stimmt. Towards the end of the war, Wehrmacht troops in the east (which by then was within Germany) were scrambling like mad to surrender to the U.S. or Brits (pref. the U.S. since we never got bombed). By the time they began to pull out of France in the early Fall, if the German generals in the west had had any guts and and any greater sense of duty than to "that Bohemian corporal", they'd have boogied east and just let the Americans roll on in. History would've turned out a bit differently.

I can't help but wonder what was going through Obama's mind and those of his speechwriters when they came up with the "mistakes were made" bit.
What exactly were they referring to?
Were they referring to not sending in enough tanks to support the troops on the beaches?
Or that the amphibious Shermans were released too far out to sea and turned into one way tickets to Davy Jones' locker in heavy swells?
Or maybe he thought the mistake was that we didn't give Hitler enough to avoid the war altogether - because if we just talked a little more and conceded just a bit more we would have avoided the war.
I'm curious if any reporter will ask him on that.

True. Remember WAB's comment about how, as a black man living in America, her husband could get shot putting gas in his car?Of course, what she left out was the likelihood that the shooter would be another black man who was trying to steal said car...
The one I most remember that was shooting people near Washington as they were filling up their car was a guy who took the name Muhammad and his sidekick Malvo.

OT: Well, the "International ANSWER Coalition" scumbags seem to be feeling their oats here in DC in the wake of Obama's Cairo speech. They just held a nasty protest near the Israeli Embassy. "Free free Palestine!", etc.
But moderates will flock to vote for Democrats if Conservatives hold a T-party? That I don't get. All the Boobs Not Bombs, ANSWER, crazy crazy stuff, (Seen Whale Watchers TV show with the protestors throwing acid bombs and ramming the whaling vessel with their ship?) - all that is mild compared to the people at the t-parties who are protesting government spending.

Revisionist history perhaps, and even then, it's not a good grasp, but thanks for playing.
Different perspective? That's what you want from a President? How about leadership? Empathy with the soldiers and sailors who gave everything to defend freedom and liberate Europe from tyranny of Nazi Germany? Everyone has a different perspective, but that's not what the President is supposed to be doing.

The thing I find most offensive about our "Light Worker" is he seems to forget his job is working for the interests and people of THIS country. He presented himself in Egypt as some transcendent bridge to the world whose very existence is something so wonderful that everyone in the world should agree with everything he says. Yet he addressed none of the dysfunction and failure that makes the Islamic world such a lovely place to live.
He laid out a new extremely dangerous policy that directly affects Israel's security and then flies to Buchenwald to give himself political cover for the fact the only nation that he damages is Israel. This is obscene.
The picture of our American Pharoh at whitehouse.gov shows him timelessly flanked by the Sphinx and the Great Pyramid. This is not just egomania it is monomania and deeply worrying in man who has not yet done much. Every other modern President has gotten systematically more detached the longer they held office. With Obama, this far gone, I fear what he will be like in six years.

I apologize as an American for interfering in WW1 and stopping YOUR war and carnage upon yourselves.
I apologize as an American for interfering in WW2 for the second time for stopping you from speaking German as your first language and eventually going to the gas chambers for having any semblance of non-arian looks.
I also apologize for the South Koreans for not having Kim Jung Ill as your great leader.
I also apologize for the Arabs for exploring for oil on your land so you could sell it to us for whatever price is on the Mercantile Exchange and that you don't have to sell us the other commodity you have plenty of...sand.
I apologize for sending naval ships or military planes anytime there is a natural catastrophe anywhere in the world.
We will unhook the phone from now on and not interfere or meddle .
Thank you

The battle scene in North Africa where Patton defeats the Panzers. The Afrika Korps would NEVER advance across open terrain with the tanks keeping pace with foot infantry marching amongst them. How many times have we heard someone from Japan appologize for the Rape of Nanking, or the Bataan Death March? I've never heard it. Not fucking once, and every Hiroshima Day I hear about how evil we were for nuking the motherfuckers.
In fact, a common theme if you talk to Japanese from that generation is that, if they had had it themselves, they would have used it for sure. They don't go in much for blaming the USA. If they think about it, the butcher's bill for Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined is probably chicken feed compared to what a ground invasion of the main islands would have cost on their side. It's important to remember that the Wehrmacht (and especially the officers) were not all that keen on Hitler (that may be a rather severe understatement, there is ample evidence that many of them HATED the man). But they were certainly nationalists and many (if not all) certainly believed that the "peace" of Versaille was a sham (and it was, it was probably the biggest mistake of the 20th century and single most important factor behind Hitler's rise to power) which - coupled with a long time dislike of the french (a sentiment they have in common with... well, just about everyone really) and a certain healthy distrust of the russians made them reason that Hitler was better than the leaders during the Weimar republic.
Ah well. (Nazis still bad. I am just talking about the Wehrmacht. Nothing else.)

He chose the latter.
Burgdorf committed suicide on may 2, 1945. Maisel died of old age. Manfred Rommel, Erwin's son, later became mayor of Stuttgart.

That whole thing in Band of Brothers where the soldier is talking about GM reminds of of Yamamoto. In 1940 Japan produced about 100,000 cars. The US produced 10 million. Or something like that. The point is our industrial capacity was 100 times that of Japan.

Reply to both of you. Yes, Rommel was a professional. An honorable enemy without doubt. An example of a man that our current enemy cannot even begin to think of matching.
But he was still the enemy, and in service to one of the most evil empires in all of history. He came to realize that, eventually, and, as an honorable man, tried to change that. He lost his life as a result of that, and for that I do honor him. As one can honor a fallen enemy after they have been defeated.
Yes to all of that.

I remember reading a remarkably frank opinion piece in the NYT from a Japanese academic who was a kid in Japan during the war years. He matter of factly said, if the situation had been reversed, and Japan had occupied the US, it would have been a nightmare of murder, rape and brutality.
In Band of Ambrose at the end in Europe he recounts stories of GI's scrambling to get dates with local girls. Contrasting with the Sovs who just took.

I thought Band of Brothers was one of the best things I've ever seen on television. I don't know what a favorite episode or scene is... too much to choose from. It was a brilliant directorial move to take different episodes from the viewpoint of very different characters; e.g., the medic in Bastogne.

Yep. And there's also the fact that the movie clearly shows his highly aggressive tactics in Sicily as actually getting the job done, compared to the more timorous approach being followed previously.
I find the movie ambiguous on the "anti-war" thing.

Yup. The original (no longer produced) H1 model was actually built on the same chassis as the HMMWV, but the H2 and H3 models are built on GM mid-size and small SUV chassis', respectively.
They're just shaped sort of like HMMWVs.

I'm a 74D (what used to be a 54B, before that, a 54E--chemical corps), so my actual MOS is pretty useless in the civilian world, but I'm a sergeant major with operations and training experience (not to mention an MPA), so I'm sure I'll find something.
I'm just irritated by the way they did it. It's strictly a money issue. I qualified for my reserve retirement years ago, but I don't get it until I turn 60 (which means 2020). We have plenty of work, and my chain of command wants me to stay on, but big Army says no.
I got a whopping 2 1/2 weeks' notice, too. I was on leave, getting ready to go down to Phoenix for the NRA Annual Meeting, when they told me I wouldn't get anymore orders after May 30th.

Correct. Yamamoto argued that a successful strike would give them - at most - 18 months, probably more like 12. Fortunately for us the man in charge of the japanese fleet was Nagumi.

A few years ago, I made the mistake of discussing World War 2 with a moonbat who was also something of a Japanophile. We got around to Japanese atrocities and he explained ever so earnestly that we could not really condemn the Japanese for their behavior because it was just part of their culture to brutalize enemies, especially those who disgraced themselves by being captured.
I responded that, well, in that case, it was just part of our culture to fire-bomb people who do that kind of shit.

Rommel had been an infantry commander on the WWI Italian front -- mountain infantry, IIRC. The book he wrote was titled (something very close to) "The Infantry In Attack"

A Medal of Honor Winner Describes REAL Torture

Subject: A Medal of Honor Winner Describes REAL Torture
All,
The writer is Colonel Bud Day, USAF (Retired), Medal of Honor (MOH) Winner (No clue who "Kelly" is, other that obviously a close friend.):
"Dear Kelly:
Thanks for the "heads up" on the Medal of Honor spots. Some of my friends have seen it already and mentioned it. I sent a copy of my book to Fox News in D.C., and wanted Sean Hannity to be able to talk about what torture really is. He has no one on his side to talk about torture..who has been tortured. He is free to quote from the many illustrations that I provided in my book Duty Honor Country I got shot down over N Vietnam in 1967..a sq commander.
After I returned in 1973.. I published 2 books that dealt a lot with "real torture" in Hanoi. Our make believe president is branding our country as a bunch of torturers when he has no idea what torture is.
****e.g * as for me..put thru a mock execution because I would not respond...pistol whipped on the head...same event.. Couple of days later...hung by my feet all day.
I escaped and got recaptured a couple of weeks later.. I got shot and recaptured. Shot was OK...what happened after was not.
They marched me to Vinh.. put me in the rope trick, trick..almost pulled my arms out of the sockets Beat me on the head with a little wooden rod until my eyes were swelled shut, and my unshot, unbroken hand a pulp.
Next day hung me by the arms...rebroke my right wrist...wiped out the nerves in my arms that control the hands..rolled my fingers up into a ball. Only left the slightest movement of my L forefinger. So I started answering with some incredible lies.
Sent me to Hanoi strapped to a barrel of gas in the back of a truck.
Hanoi..on my knees..rope trick again. Beaten by a big fool.
Into leg irons on a bed in Heartbreak Hotel.
Much kneeling--hands up at Zoo.
Really bad beating for refusing to condemn Lyndon Johnson.
Several more kneeling events. I could see my knee bone thru kneeling holes.
There was an escape from the annex to the Zoo. I was the Senior Officer of a large building because of escape..they started a mass torture of all commanders.
I think it was July 7, 1969..they started beating me with a car fan belt. In first 2 days I took over 300 strokes..then stopped counting because I never thought I would live thru it.
They continued day-nite torture to get me to confess to a non-existent part in the escape. This went on for at least 3 days. On my knees..fan belting.. cut open my scrotum with fan belt stroke. opened up both knee holes again. My fanny looked like hamburger..I could not lie on my back.
They tortured me into admitting that I was in on the escape..and that my 2 room-mates knew about it.
The next day I denied the lie.
They commenced torturing me again with 3- 6- or 9 strokes of the fan belt every day from about July 11 or 12rh..to 14 October 1969. I continued to refuse to lie about my roommates again.
Now, the point of this is that our make-believe president has declared to the world that we (U.S.) are a bunch of torturers.. Thus it will be OK to torture us next time when they catch us....because that is what the U.S. does.
Our make-believe president is a know nothing fool who thinks that pouring a little water on some one's face, or hanging a pair of womens pants over an Arabs head is TORTURE. He is a meathead.
I just talked to MOH holder Leo Thorsness who was also in my sq in jail ..as was john McCain..and we agree that McCain does not speak for the POW group when he claims that Al Gharib was torture.. or that "water boarding" is torture.
Our president and those fools around him who keep bad mouthing our great country are a disgrace to the United States. Please pass this info on to Sean Hannity. He is free to use it to point out the stupidity of the claims that water boarding ..which has no

Heh -- part of the Hollywood-crap in the movie was showing "Rommel's book" on Patton's nightstand. The title on the cover was twisted to refer to tanks/armored warfare.
Rommel had been an infantry commander on the WWI Italian front -- mountain infantry, IIRC. The book he wrote was titled (something very close to) "The Infantry In Attack"
Any military commander that DOESN'T study the works/writings of potential or real enemy commanders should never be given any responsibility for commanding troops in battle.

Good Morning. My girlfriend and I watched the D-Day reports over our morning coffee.
She is Japanese national and her father was a POW in a Russian prison camp in Siberia at the end of WWII. Being familiar with the effects of PTSD, she was quite moved to see the veterans returning to Normandy where they experienced so much horror. She said her father would NEVER go back to the scene of his suffering.
We watched the old clips of the D-Day landing, which I've seen countless times, and I am still moved to tears seeing the bravery of those men walking into that meat grinder at Omaha Beach. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
Out of respect for the solemn occasion of this day, I will not comment on "0"s speech.

Keep in mind that Obama wasn't educated in the US for the most part. I believe he moved to Hawaii when he was 10 (1971) and was not educated on mainland America until he was in college. I doubt Hawaii had an abundance of US History experts at that time considering Hawaii had only been a state since 1959 - little more than a decade earlier.
I believe this is why he appears so disconnected with the average American and our history.

Yes! Thanks for asking.
Woke up at 6:30, and realized that I had not had to go to the bathroom once during the night, and that not every cell in my body was screaming for more sleep immediately.
Still, I've been living with sleep deprivation so long that I had to take a nap later. But it's a beginning.
I also woke up numerous times to turn over, but I do that anyway. The discomfort of wearing the nosepiece was minimal, and will grow less as time passes, I'm sure. And they even gave me one that allows me to wear reading glasses so I can continue my lifelong habit of reading myself to sleep!
They also prescribed a humidifier, so no dry mouth. And it's a neat little machine with a carrying case for travel.

Well then what is his excuse for knowing so little about US History? I was trying to find excuses for his lack of knowledge. I rarely make excuses for him.
I remember seeing a short film where spies infiltrating the USA gave themselves away by messing up little things that Americans ALL know. The bum on the street will know. These are things you learn because you grow up here in the USA. Immigrants might not know them, though they tend to know history better than American born, rather then not as well.
President Obama seems to be afflicted with the worst of both worlds, in a way. He missed a lot of the USAisms by spending a large chunk of his growth years out of the USA, then he apparently didn't have the impetus to get interested in history. Consequently, he just didn't absorb stuff, and he sometimes comes off as faking knowing things, which is really much worse than admitting you are not on top of a subject.

Man Shoots Computer In FrustrationJuly 12, 1997
ISSAQUAH, Wash. - A 43-year-old man was coaxed out of his home by police after he pulled a gun on his personal computer and shot it several times, apparently in frustration.
"We don't know if it wouldn't boot up or what," Police Sgt. Keith Moon said Thursday.
The computer, in a home office on the second floor of the townhouse, had four bullet holes in the hard drive and one in the monitor, according to Moon.
One bullet struck a filing cabinet, while another made it through a wall and into a neighboring unit. No one was injured.

After the forts at the entrance to Tokyo Bay were occupied (and confirmed as neutralized), two companies of 3rd Bn/4th Marines landed at the IJN's Yokosuka Naval Base to take possession of it. My Dad was in that landing.
18 years later, at the US Naval Shipyard/Yoko, he pointed out the exact spot where they'd come ashore -- wondering if they'd be shot at.

I was determined not to comment about the President's speech. I felt it is more important to remember what those brave men sacrificed on that day.
But one part of the speech especially crawled beneath my skin and so I choose to comment. In speaking of that ideology that is "fueled by hatred to those who were deemed different" - sheesh, what a lame euphemism - that I began to wonder why President Obama and our State Department does not seem to understand the current ideology which seeks to "subjugate, humiliate and exterminate". Just to keep this brief, I'll give you a hint. The Arabic word for subjugation is dhimmi.
I hope the President succeeds with his vision and plan in bringing about peace though my instinct still tells me that the President's approach will signal to the radical Islamists that the United States is weak and that Bin Ladin was correct in attacking on September 11th for it drew the United States into a war which (in their view) weakened the United States.
Below are President Obama's words from his D-Day memorial speech.
For what we faced in Nazi totalitarianism was not just a battle of competing interests. It was a competing vision of humanity. Nazi ideology sought to subjugate, humiliate, and exterminate. It perpetrated murder on a massive scale, fueled by a hatred of those who were deemed different and therefore inferior. It was evil.
Now back to remembering what was given 65 years ago today.

Never is his lightweightedness ever more evident than when he addresses major historic events - he'd done so little in his life (pre Presidency) that he simply has too little gravity to make a dent in anything - If he were a bit more humble I think we'd cheer for him easier - but when you mix lightweight with arrogance what you get is this milquetoast monster - and he (for me) is loathesome.
Thanks for this post. I've been failing to find words for my dissatisfaction with the speech, and you nailed them.
Like Catttt #310 said, 'milquetoast monster' is a great phrase. Sometimes 'milquetoast messiah' might be an alternative.

Obama salutes fading D-Day vets - minus one
By MIKE ALLEN %P% 6/6/09 2:40 PM EDT
Politico.com
NORMANDY, France – President Barack Obama marked the 65th anniversary of the early-morning D-Day landings by saluting 9,000 Americans, many of them teenagers, who fell in a chaotic, terrifying surprise assault that would "change the course of an entire century."
The ceremony – a solemn tribute, but also a celebration of American grit – was held in the serenity of the seaside Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. Row on row of white gravestones – mostly crosses, with a few Stars of David – were each marked by little U.S. and French flags.
One of the president's honored guests – Jim Norene, a member of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne – didn't make it.
"Last night, after visiting this cemetery for one last time, he passed away in his sleep," Obama told a solemn crowd of vets stretching farther than most eyes can see. "Jim was gravely ill when he left his home, and he knew that he might not return. But just as he did sixty-five years ago, he came anyway. May he now rest in peace with the boys he once bled with, and may his family always find solace in the heroism he showed here."
The president was accompanied by Michelle Obama. Also onstage were French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Britain's Prince Charles and Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
In Brown's remarks, he referred to "Obama Beach," then corrected himself to "Omaha Beach" a few words later, after a stir in the crowd.
Brown may have been confused by the French tabloid Liberation, which marked the president's visit by splashing an "Obama Beach" on the cover of its weekend edition.

A job fair was held at a NH College last month where they expected a thousand or so people to attend. Instead, ten thousand people showed up. The unemployment rate here in NH is supposedly 6.3% Hmmm....
There was a story on Yahoo news the other day about a New Hampshire man who's been out of work for months, who was thrilled to get a couple of months work with the census. The article went on to say that if you added discouraged workers, people whose unemployment has run out, and people working part time who want to be working full time to the official unemployment rate, it would be around 15.8%. In other words, about triple the official rate in NH and far higher than the official 9.4% nationally.

I think the big problem for Republicans is going to be the recovering economy. By 2012 all those politicians who opposed bailing out the banks, stimulus, etc will be sunk if the economy recovers. Palin, Jindal, that dude from one of the Carolinas who tried (and failed) to reject stimulus money are probably going to look stupid. Newt's going to be sunk from Tea Party associations. I think the best bet for 2012 is someone who's out of the fray. Like the guy from Utah who took the ambassadorship to China.
If Rush gets his wish and Obama fails horribly then the GOP can be swept in by default, it won't matter who they run.

Here is an interesting take on apologies by states, and how best to do it.Bottom line - article mentions Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, "who in the 1950s encouraged Germans "to acknowledge the harms done while looking forward." "
Here is a list of Japanese WWII apologies. (Yes, it's Wikipedia, but most of the items are credibly referenced.)
As your link indicates, the problem is not Japan's apologies. The concern is with the attitude expressed between & after apologies...

2010 is fine, but let's face it, the Repubs are spent. If we can pick up some ground in the Congress that's great, but Repub victories then (barring a huge swing in pop. opinion, the media, etc.)will not shift the balance of power in DC.
Anyway, the commisars and czars should be the target of every conservative running.

Unless, of course, we wind up with 15-20% inflation and a stagnant economy. Which is a likely result of dumping these huge amounts of money into the monetary system. That money all has to come from somewhere. I'm not an economist, but that is something that concerns me. I can understand that much of it at least.
I've seen that prediction too, it does seem to be a concern but I've seen so many predictions of doom and disaster that I take it all with a grain of salt. If I had to guess I'd say we'll go through a period of moderate inflation but nothing catastrophic. Just a guess, I don't really understand economics either. Anything can happen.

That sounds very hard. I'm done paying tuition for the oldest, and the only loans are her responsibility. My son opted for the Navy, so that leaves one daughter, who will be a high school senior this year. I've had to level with her about the finances. She can apply anywhere she wants to, but she has to understand that we may not be able to afford her first choice. Even with just my income, we may make too much to get significant financial aid.

It will last as long as the MSM concocts stories about "funemployment",and spins it as good news that the unemployment rate is a little less than last month. Under Bush when the economy grew, it was anemic, and when jobs were created the job growth was sluggish.

I think many have learned to be careful what they wish for. The crash of the American economy and the extreme weakening of the world's last super power isn't the lulz they thought it would be, I guess.
For decades Europe resented American cultural supremacy in the world, even while they imitated it. Probably all started with DeGaulle.
I think that they now see that we are a rather benign power & that if we fade the alternative might not be pretty.

Inflation news....
Fed's Yellen: Now Likes 2% As Inflation Objective
Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco President Janet Yellen said Friday that after previously favoring 1.5% as an inflation objective for the Fed, she would now like to see inflation in the 2% range over the long run.
"I think if I now had to write down a number, I'd probably write 2%," Yellen said at a Fed conference.
The Fed doesn't have an official inflation target. However it does publish on a quarterly basis officials' longer-term inflation forecasts that they see as consistent with the Fed's dual mandate of price stability and maximum sustainable employment.
Yellen said she would like more formal research on what the right objective should be for inflation, adding "it's a subject on which I have an open mind."

Well the surgeon still should have come in and seen you. You probably developed what is colloquially called a liver clot, because the wound doesn't clot properly at first but forms this liver like gelatin clot that just bleeds like a son of a bitch. Usually you got to clean the area out and start the clotting process over again. Sounds like that is what the other Dentist had to do. It should be fine now. U.S. bailout repayment seen bigger than expected
The Obama administration is expected to announce next week that a higher-than-expected number of large financial institutions will be allowed to repay their government bailout funds, the Washington Post reported in its Saturday edition.
Citing unnamed sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official announcement has not been made yet, the newspaper report said the size of the repayments may be twice the initial estimate of $25 billion.
That could mean that nearly all of the nine institutions found to have sufficient reserves in a recent government-run "stress test" might be allowed to return the money under the Treasury Department's Troubled Asset Relief Program.
So- we won't be broke anymore? How quickly will Washington spend this return?

That's exactly what happened, and what the other dentist called it.
The surgeon works out of Peterson AFB, at the south end of town. They apparently have some kind of agreement between their clinic and the Academy about covering stuff after hours. Normally, the Academy handles everything, but Peterson covers emergencies during part of the summer and over the Christmas holiday period.

Might've been mentioned earlier.
I listened to the speech, it struck me as kind of cool that 65 years ago, black and white soldiers were segregated. 65 years later a black man gives a speech, representing America as the President of the United States.
Had to be 0bama, but, still the idea is cool.
I'm trying to remember. I know there were not many if any black assault troops on D-Day, but there were Black units that were in charge of getting the dirigibles up over the assault beaches to help prevent enemy planes from strafing.

I know there aren't many Bernake fans around here but.......
US Fed Chairman demands plan to cut social programs
Testifying Wednesday before the Budget Committee of the House of Representatives, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke demanded that Congress and the Obama administration map out a program of austerity measures to bring down record budget deficits. Bernanke made clear that the heart of this program should be sharp cuts in social spending, including basic entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare.
“Maintaining the confidence of the financial markets,” Bernanke said in prepared remarks to the committee, “requires that we, as a nation, begin planning now for the restoration of fiscal balance.”

It is the printing of money that is the root of inflation, or at least one of the roots of inflation. Too many dollars chasing too few goods. The only way I know of to fix that problem is economic growth to offset the money printed or crippling interest rates.
But I'm not an economist, and don't claim to be one.
Absolutely - if more money is printed, it has less value. That seems obvious to me.

My Dad was with the 28th Div., nicknamed the "Bloody Bucket". Dad talked often about his buddy's & their antics but not much about the fighting. Typical, of his generation, I think. Is that the case with your Dad too? In his later years, especially as my sons were deployed in Iraq, we talked more about the 'war' itself. (Dad did often mention the respect he had for Gen. Cota.)

I watched the event earlier. President Obama gave a long boring history lesson. History lessons are good -- but, in this setting, at this time -- not so much. I would rather have heard the entire speech devoted to the sacrifices that were made by US Soldiers on that horrendous day.
And in that vein - the sacrifices made by the US military - Sarkozy's thank you to the United States had me in tears. He truly appreciates what the United States did for France.

As far as listening to Obama give a speech, I have heard my fill of his disingenuous platitudes or fictitious personal experiences made up to fit the occasion.

Couple of points on the speech.
He mentions a Royal Air Corps. That would actually have been the Royal Air Force.
Also, he mentioned Canada and the United Kingdom as taking part but he forgot to mention Australia and New Zealand. There were other foreign nationals involved during the invasion.
651 | Lynn B. Sat, Jun 6, 2009 4:30:35pm |
Oh boy. I watched the speech on TV this morning and I thought it was pretty good. I'm in a minority of about one-and-a-half here, is seems. And my knowledge of history sucks so I was spared knowing whatever wasn't accurate.
At first I was wondering why he was lecturing the men who served there on their own history, but then it got interesting and, with the exception of a few stupid injections (all of which have been discussed above), again, I was moved (and not expecting to be).
I did notice some of the vets wiping their eyes. I don't think it was from anger at his mistakes and presumptions.
OTOH, I also noticed that he jumped up before the other heads of state to lay the wreath. They just sat there, all dignified like, and let him hang in the breeze for a few seconds more. That was a bit of a cringe moment.
Just my take.

This individual's rewriting of history knows no bounds. You think he's trying to make a point when he says this battle points to the "clarity of purpose with which this war was waged." He goes on immediately. "We live in a world of competing beliefs and claims about what is true. It's a world of varied religions, and cultures and forms of gov't. In such a world it's all too rare for a struggle to emerge that speaks to something universal about humanity. The Second World War did that." He then says, referring to the nations that came together, "whatever God we pray to we knew we had to stop the Nazis."
Should we derive from this that Obama wants us to think the Moslems fought at D-Day, or fought on our side? What other point is he trying to make, this man who is making it the purpose of his presidency to get close with the Moslem world? Is that perhaps why he is giving a history lesson- starting with a litany of facts about the German defenses and naming the beaches like he knows them so well- to European leaders and WWII vets who know it so much better than he does? Maybe American schoolchildren, the ones who don't like history but who might read an Obama speech, will get the notion that the Moslems fought alongside the Allies against the Nazis (he even calls the Nazis "evil," wow, that's pretty far out on a limb.) Only one small problem. Tell this to the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. Tell it to the Egyptians. Anwar Sadat said in an interview (prior to taking power), and it's available on film, ""It was very simple. Germany is the enemy of our enemy, England. So the enemy of our enemy is our friend."
And what does he mean he will "likely" not be the last President to mark the anniversary at D-Day. Is he hedging his bets? This individual should Never Never Never have been made President of this country. There's something in the American spirit that he is only pretending to have. This event does not move him. John McCain would have stirring speech. Ronald Reagan did make a stirring speech. I can't think of any American president, and I'll even include Jimmy Carter, who didn't strike me as ultimately having something of the American spirit, the desire to be great and do great things, (even if Carter got it all wrong, even if I think he's a disaster, it's not for lack of caring but misguidedness, in my opinion). Barack Obama sounds here like he is giving a college lecture, and a boring one at that. He names all the right people, says most of the right things, but he is clearly going through the motions. Someone on here, tell me where is the Barack Obama who was this great speaker during the campaign? I didn't see it then, I don't see it now. What was he ever but "no more Bush?"
658 | avspatti Sat, Jun 6, 2009 6:00:32pm |
Wesley Pruden has an excellent take on Obama at Jewish World Review. He writes in the 8th paragraph exactly what I have felt about O from the beginning. He doesn't think like an American. (This has nothing to do with his birth certificate or any of that nonsense.) He is missing the shared experiences of Americans.
659 | MacDuff Sat, Jun 6, 2009 6:06:05pm |
i haven't read this whole thread, so if I'm making a redundant point, my apologies.
I watched Reagan's 1984 speech, then I watched Obama's. The first thing that struck me was that the setting for Reagan's speech was more intimate and respectful, while the setting for Obama's seemed like a big production. The result was Reagan looked large and humble, while Obama looked small and pompous.
Another thing that I noticed that, after all of the acknowledgments, Obama began his speech with "I", using the word "I" twice in the first sentence. Reagan began his speech with "We".
Words mean things and on a day such as today, they mean even more.

I guess its one of those 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' things for an American President. There are certain places and times an American President is 'expected' to make speeches to commemorate history. If he hadn't have made some speech, anti-Obamites would have noticed and commented as such. Its merely a case of context though...you have to consider who is making the speech. Obama has made a career out of speech-making, posing for cameras and rubbing elbows with those who appreciate 'the CAMERA' far too much. It would just be a welcome thing to have him make a succinct, short speech from time to time, instead of incessantly droning on and on.
that's all. simply put, there are those of us who would like politicians (presidential or otherwise) to be more like children.....seen and not heard.
Hey for that matter, I'm all for giving our Congress the rest of the year off, anything to stifle them from further overburdening us withe yet MORE laws.
