Well, itâs the first weekend of the Austin City Limits Festival and the projected high temps are 98 tomorrow, and 99/99 on Saturday and Sunday. With the first real âcoolâ front coming in Monday a.m., compression wave could push temps above 100 on Sunday.

The backstory is that back in the early 1970âs when the Mormon Temple was being built, a lot of people had no idea what it was. So somebody tagged the bridge with âSurrender Dorothyâ . Which was a Wizard of Oz reference to the very exotic building going up. Seemed good humored guess at the time.
Looks like it has been updated to fit into these crazy times.

A man in Arizona was recently arrested and charged with vandalizing a Catholic chapel. Police believe heâs a member of the pro-President Donald Trump conspiracy theory/support group known as âQAnonâ.
According to The Arizona Republic, the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona was attacked by a man swinging a crowbar into the altar on September 25th. The attack smashed several sacred chalices. The incident was caught on video and posted online. Afterwards, the same man allegedly sprayed âevilâ onto the sidewalk in front of the church.
The Sedona Police Department later arrested 41-year-old Timothy Larson and charged him with aggravated criminal damage, disorderly conduct, and a hate crime. Authorities highlighted Larsonâs Twitter account which allegedly identified him as a fervent believer in the far-right QAnon conspiracy theory that so-called âdeep stateâ elements are angling to somehow subvert President Trump and his supporters.
QAnon-aligned conspiracy theorists frequently make false accusations against high-profile members of the political and media establishment and also issue predictions and prognostications which never come to pass â facts which only serves to deepen their followersâ irrational faith in the 21st century mystery cult.

Sure, atheism is contagious. From things which show up in my inbox from time to time. In this case, itâs sort of a response to the conservative formula of âthoughts and prayersâ when something bad happens.
Hasidim are Orthodox Jews who follow Mosaic Law strictly; they arose out of a piety movement in Judaism in the latter part of the XXVIII Century.
An interesting quotation from the book âTales of Hasidimâ:
Why Did God Create Atheists?
There is a famous story told in Chassidic literature that addresses this very question. The Master teaches the student that God created everything in the world to be appreciated, since everything is here to teach us a lesson.
One clever student asks âWhat lesson can we learn from atheists? Why did God create them?â
The Master responds âGod created atheists to teach us the most important lesson of them all â the lesson of true compassion. You see, when an atheist performs an act of charity, visits someone who is sick, helps someone in need, and cares for the world, he is not doing so because of some religious teaching. He does not believe that God commanded him to perform this act. In fact, he does not believe in God at all, so his acts are based on an inner sense of morality. And look at the kindness he can bestow upon others simply because he feels it to be right.â
âThis means,â the Master continued âthat when someone reaches out to you for help, you should never say âI pray that God will help you.â Instead for the moment, you should become an atheist, imagine that there is no God who can help, and say âI will help you.ââ

Trump is energized, and so is his base:
âThese people are trying to destroy our country, theyâre sick, thereâs something wrong with them,â Trump said. He repeated his complaint about Schiff making up his own dialogue when supposedly quoting from the transcript of the phone call at last weekâs hearing.
âHe quoted the president of the United States in a fraudulent manner, he made the entire thing up,â Trump said. âHe couldnât quote me because there was nothing to quote ⊠he just made the whole thing up, heâs sick.â
Schiff, who defended his fictional rendition as âparody,â is, ironically, part of the third reason for Trumpâs optimism. He cites the âtremendous responseâ among his supporters, saying they are motivated by the attacks coming from Democrats and the media.
âI see the fundraising, itâs the biggest ever,â Trump said, mentioning the record $125 million take for his campaign and the Republican National Committee.

The latest state polling is in for Morning Consult regarding President Trumpâs popularity by state.
The interesting thing about the map (red is underwater, blue is supporting) is the High Plains states are sliding more.
My state (Nebr.) has slipped further: Trump is now at -2 (down from +23 in Jan 17). We are definitely in swing state territory (hey Dems, you want five electoral votes? How about campaigning here).
ND and SD are at +1 (also putting them in swing territory).
TX is +2 (also swing territory, and the death knell for the GOP if it falls to the Dems in 2020). Only Oklahoma is outside swing territory (+11).

As Anymouse already noted, red voters were also âenergizedâ in 2018, so much so that they surpassed the 2016 turnout. I like that story.
The âvoices of sanityâ largely are falling into the âNothing is getting done!â camp, which was pretty well addressed yesterday by Pelosi. The House is getting things done, itâs passing bills, but those bills are sitting in the Senate by order of Mitch McConnell. And this is not something that started last week, heâs been sitting on bills for months and has sworn that certain bills that weâre told impeachment is âimperilingâ would never come to a vote. So yes, itâs a false dilemma, the idea that the price for legislation that was never going anywhere to begin with is letting Trump skate on his crimes until next November.
If you want to understand where voters get the idea that âboth sides are the same,â look to those âvoices of sanity.â
re: #41 Shropshire Slasher
Trump is energized, and so is his base:
âso is his baseâ
âso is his baseâ
His base might be strong, but thatâs not the same as the Republican base.
But also, Trumps base is small. Even if they are really motivated and turn out to vote in higher numbers, a high turnout rate for 30% of voters, is going to be relatively small to a increased turnout rate for the 55% (or so) of voters who are sick of his shit.
Even without any new events occurring, the 2020 elections are going to be incredibly tough for Republicans. And weâve got a whole year of President Sundown losing his shit.
At the risk of making a prediction - this is likely to come to an end more suddenly (though maybe not soon), when someone forces Trump to sit down and answer questions in front of a camera.
re: #64 Danack
Considering how rapidly Mr. Trump seems to be declining (at least to me), Iâm not sure he will be able to mount an effective campaign for President.
He hasnât held a Nuremberg Electric Boogaloo 2 rally in some time. Heâs mostly avoiding public appearances. Heâs spending more time on Twitter.
On the GOP side of the aisle, there has to be calculations by Republican politicians whether they need to stay connected to him or distance themselves from him. The RNC is sticking by him because thatâs their job.
The number of Republicans headed for the exits seems to show the party as its behaving now canât hold.

Impeachment investigations are already underway.
Nixon was polling quite high until the investigation started. As the information came out, his support suddenly collapsed and a couple weeks later he was out.
I donât see Mr. Trump resigning (at least not willingly) because he would view resignation as defeat. (That, and those states champing at the bit for state prosecutions.)

Mrs. Clinton won the election by popular vote. The problem is the Electoral College is weighted toward acres and not people.
What is noteworthy is the slide in nominally red states like mine (as noted above, he won with +25 in the vote but is currently -2).
There is more than one way to win an election. One is energising more of your voters than the other guys. Another is that the other guys are disillusioned and chose to vote for the Democrats (or donât vote at all).
In my state, the voter turnout was north of 80% (mail voting works) in the 2016 election. The GOP really doesnât have more people they can energise: They need to appeal to the squishy middle and Democrats who didnât vote because they saw voting as pointless in such a Trump-loving state.
Democrats arenât voting for the GOP here (which explains why in the local 2018 elections the state party fielded the most Democratic candidates in history and a huge number won - my own reĂ«lection failing was actually a minority of the Democratic candidates on the ballot here). The squishy 20% or so who didnât vote here are the target of both the GOP and Dems, and the GOP really doesnât have a lot to offer them (a wall a thousand miles away? Soybean and corn prices crashing?)

But what he is polling at is far to high to try to impeach him.
Heâs been steadily polling lower than either Nixon or Clinton when impeachment inquiries began and his numbers have been in decline since last week. In fact, by contrast, when Clinton was impeached, his job approval numbers jumped 10 pts to 73%.

re: #73 Barefoot Grin
Great article this month in the Smithsonian on the Oklahoma Socialist âGreen Corn Rebellion.â
Oklahomaâs entire existence is the result of socialism.
Starting with the Homestead Act â the federal government gave FREE LAND!! to people who couldnât possibly have pulled together cash for purchases. The federal government provided for the safety of the people on that land, by having US Army remove the previous owners who would have objected to the new arrivals. Then the federal government built a railroad, so these farmers would have a market available for their crops. And land grant universities, so the farmersâ kids would be well-educated as to the newest best practices in farming (which were discovered by federally funded research). And when the farmers ignored the best practices and over planted the whole region into a dust bowl â it was federally funded scientists with their federally funded staff and federally funded equipment and supplies who rehabbed the land to make it productive again. Those farms are still receiving price supports and subsidies.
But how dare THOSE PEOPLE want a handout paid for by the taxes paid by these intrepid, hard-working, self-made bootstrappers who earned everything themselves with no help from anyone.

True, but arguably, the Times doing it is much worse, both in scope and in optics. As Anymouse already noted, red voters were also âenergizedâ in 2018, so much so that they surpassed the 2016 turnout. And that was an election where A) Trump wasnât on the ballot and B) he wasnât facing impeachment.
Iâm sure that Trump is thrilled by that fundraising take, as itâs even more money that will end up in his pockets before next November.

LGFers in Europe better hide, it looks like weâre coming soon.
Democrats now realize all they have to do is keep encouraging Trump to have public panic attacks and temper tantrums.
What you most hear from congressional Republicans on impeachment this week is the sound of silence.
GOP sources tell CNN they have a good reason for that fear. They have no idea what else House Democratsâ investigation will uncover or what comes next.
Along with that fear is frustration with President Donald Trump: his ranting in performances full of false claims, like Wednesday in the Oval Office and White House East Room, and stream of consciousness rapid-fire tweets â curse words and all â are not exactly an anti-impeachment road map for his fellow RepublicansâŠ
And although phrases like âwitch huntâ and âhoaxâ worked for the President politically during the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller, concerned GOP sources â more than half a dozen, including some in leadership who are talking to and hearing from the rank and file â tell CNN that they worry the President isnât comprehending what they believe to be true, that this is differentâŠ
Several congressional Republicans tell CNN that their concern is exacerbated by getting very little guidance from the White House. CNN reported last week that, despite an initial flirtation with setting up an impeachment war room in the mold of Bill Clintonâs White House during his impeachment, the Trump team is not going there now.
âThere is no White House war room. Why are we the ones who have to defend him?â asked one congressional GOP source.

re: #97 Shropshire Slasher
And you are assuming the hearings will be a net positive for the Democrats.
Hearings arenât meant to be a net positive for a political party. Hearings are to determine if behaviour or actions warrant removal from office.
Hearings could also clear Mr. Trump of any suspicion. In that event, the GOP and Mr. Trump should welcome the chance to show he is not unfit for office. Any impeachment hearings before the relevant committees allow Republican representatives to present evidence which they believe debunks claims against him.
Over on the Senate side (assuming articles of impeachment are actually approved, which is not a sure thing yet), in the Senate trial Mr. Trump or his allies are free to present any sort of evidence showing that he has not broken the law or violated his oath.
The process of impeachment still provides for the person impeached to present their case that they have not done anything untoward or illegal.
Sen. Lindsey Graham noted during the impeachment of Bill Clinton that the purpose of impeachment was to remove the stain of impropriety on the office of the Presidency.
As such, the constitutional procedure of impeachment protects the office, not the person.
Schiff didnât parody, he paraphrased. In that this was over a 3 hour hearing with much damning testimony, focusing on Schiffâs paraphrasing of events is pretty desperate. Supporters of President Cartman are grasping at *anything* that can be used to make more noise and muddy the waters.

Rick Wilson: âIn private, Republicans are in the deepest despair of the Trump era. Theyâve got that hang-dog, dick-in-the-dirt fatalism of men destined to die in a meaningless battle in a pointless war. Theyâve abandoned all pretense of recapturing the House, their political fortunes in the states are crashing and burning, and the stock-market bubble they kept up as a shield against the downsides of Trumpââbut muh 401(k)!ââis popping.â
âYou want to know why so few Republicans have held town-hall meetings since early 2017? Because Trump is the cancer they deny is consuming them from the inside out. They see the political grave markers of 42 of their GOP House colleaguesâand several hundred down-ballot Republicansâbooted from office since 2017 and know that outside of the deepest red enclaves, theyâre salesmen for a brand no one is buying.â
âI have some bad news, Republicans. It never gets better. There is no daylight at the end of this tunnel. Trump is a suicide bomber, and youâve strapped yourselves to him so tightly that when he explodes, youâre going out to meet the 72 porn stars of the Trumpian afterlife with him. The House is getting things done, itâs passing bills, but those bills are sitting in the Senate by order of Mitch McConnell. So yes, itâs a false dilemma, the idea that the price for legislation that was never going anywhere to begin with is letting Trump skate on his crimes until next November.

From electoral-vote.com 190822
Only 22% of Americans are on Twitter at all. Also, 80% of the Twitter content is created by 10% of its users. In case you donât have a calculator handy, this means that 2% of Americans create 80% of the content on Twitter. So Twitter is not representative of anything other than the 2% of the population that spends its whole day tweeting. Yet the media act like if something is trending on Twitter, then the whole country is talking about it and it is important. Nope and nope again. (V)

And letâs count all the GOPers who are heading for the exits before 2020 (not counting all the GOPers who are indicted, or taking plea deals - like Hunter and Collins).
The numbers are growing nearly daily. At same time, Democrats who were on the fence about impeachment are boarding the train. Why? Because the reality is that upholding the rule of law is a good thing.
Rep. Max Rose, who represents Staten Island and a district that went hard for Trump in 2016, came out in favor of impeachment. Why? Because the facts demand it.

2. Schiff tells the whistleblower to say that Trump did X.
3. Whistleblower says Trump did X.
(Now watch where this goes off the rails)
4. Trump says he did X.
5. Trump releases transcript saying he did X.
(Now we have to fix this)
6. Trump denies he did X.
7. Trump says transcript he released doesnât exist.

Voles: 43.

re: #162 steve_davis
In fairness, I was also mystified as to why Schiff felt like he needed to paraphrase Trumpâs transcript. Just read the damned thing. Keep the tone serious. The paraphrase wasnât meant to be funny, but it smelled a bit of typical congressional grandstanding. And Schiff is way too good at examination to have to resort to that sort of thing.
I originally updinged this, because I didnât like the âparodyâ concept. But I just rechecked Schiffâs remarks (from Politifact):
âShorn of its rambling character and in not so many words, this is the essence of what the president communicates: âWeâve been very good to your country. Very good. No other country has done as much as we have. But you know what? I donât see much reciprocity here. I hear what you want. I have a favor I want from you, though. And Iâm going to say this only seven times, so you better listen good. I want you to make up dirt on my political opponent, understand? Lots of it. On this and on that. Iâm going to put you in touch with people, not just any people. Iâm going to put you in touch with the attorney general of the United States, my attorney general Bill Barr. Heâs got the whole weight of the American law enforcement behind him. And Iâm going to put you in touch with (presidential attorney) Rudy (Giuliani). Youâre going to love him, trust me. You know what Iâm asking and so Iâm only going to say this a few more times, in a few more ways. And by the way, donât call me again. Iâll call you when youâve done what I asked.â
âThis is, in sum and character, what the president was trying to communicate with the president of Ukraine. It would be funny if it wasnât such a graphic betrayal of the Presidentâs oath of office. But as it does represent a real betrayal, thereâs nothing the president says here that is in Americaâs interest after all.â
Later in the hearing, when Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, pointed out that what Schiff said did not match the readout of the call, Schiff said his summary was âmeant to be at least part in parody.â
He says, both before and after, that these arenât the actual words. My only quibble at this point is the âparodyâ remark. He should have said âmaybe the honorable gentleman from Ohio didnât hear me when I said âShorn of its rambling character and in not so many wordsâ at the beginning and âin sum and characterâ at the end.â

The official âtranscriptâ reads like a SNL routine. It was similar to the time when a televised cabinet level meeting showed every senior official (except Mattis) demeaning themselves by lavishing over-the-top praise on the corrupt dictator wannabe that occupies the Oval office and is working assiduously to destroy our nation with the enthusiastic support of the Republican party.
What is so amazing is how all you Republicans are in love with Putin and donât care about our traditional allies. It was unsettling to see Trump tell Zelenksy at the press conference to negotiate with Putin. Trump withholding aid from Ukraine unless they comply with his extortion demands is an outrage. But then Trump is Neville Chamberlain without the underlying loyalty to his nation.

Unfortunately, as long as Republicans remain in charge of the WH and the Senate, we have no way to pass meaningful legislation. The one law Democrats could pass that would have an impact on the White House no matter whoâs in charge afterwards would be to make it explicit that a sitting president can be indicted.
re: #66 Shropshire Slasher
But what he is polling at is far to high to try to impeach him.
You couldnât be more ahistorical and wrong:
But that was just the beginning of the toll the scandal would take on the president that year. The televised Watergate hearings that began in May 1973, chaired by Sen. Samuel Ervin, commanded a large national audience - 71% told Gallup they watched the hearings live. And as many as 21% reported watching 10 hours or more of the Ervin proceedings. Not too surprisingly, Nixonâs popularity took a severe hit. His ratings fell as low as 31%, in Gallupâs early August survey.
The public had changed its view of the scandal. A 53% majority came to the view that Watergate was a serious matter, not just politics, up from 31% who believed that before the hearings. Indeed, an overwhelming percentage of the public (71%) had come to see Nixon as culpable in the wrongdoing, at least to some extent. About four-in-ten (37%) thought he found out about the bugging and tried to cover it up; 29% went further in saying that he knew about the bugging beforehand, but did not plan it; and 8% went all the way, saying he planned it from beginning to end. Only 15% of Americans thought that the president had no prior knowledge and spoke up as soon as he learned of it.
Yet, despite the increasingly negative views of Nixon at that time, most Americans continued to reject the notion that Nixon should leave office, according to Gallup. Just 26% thought he should be impeached and forced to resign, while 61% did not.
A lot of key scandal events were to follow that year and into 1974, but public opinion about Watergate was slow to change further, despite the high drama of what was taking place. For example, October 1973 was a crucial month as the courts ruled that the president had to turn over his taped conversations to special prosecutor Archibald Cox, and subsequently Nixon ordered for the dismissal of Cox in what came to be known as the Saturday Night Massacre. The public reacted, but in a measured way. In November, Gallup showed the percentage of Americans thinking that the president should leave office jumping from 19% in June to 38%, but still, 51% did not support impeachment and an end to Nixonâs presidency.
Last time you showed up you asserted that surviving impeachment is what gave Clinton a second term, even though he wasnât impeached until his second term. Youâre just always fucking wrong.

Actually, I think SS MAY have about half a point. Yes, Trumpâs polling is (relatively) high for a President facing impeachment hearings. For now. However:
1. Polling for âimpeachmentâ and âremovalâ (an important distinction) averages about 47% in favor. Not a good starting place, if youâre the target.
2. Serious hearings in the House havenât even started yet.
3. So far, the Presidentâs and his croniesâ defenses/rebuttals against the corruption charges have been mainly hysterical insults, inarticulate blathering and conspiracy-theory babblement. And that approach doesnât seem likely to change.
So all in all, not a rosy prospect for Mango Mussolini - though of course, the final determination of his fate will rest on political, not legal grounds. As it always has.

Trumpâs Every Move Is Brilliant and Calculated
Alexandra Petri: âFor the last time, this is all part of the plan. Getting himself impeached is actually a strategic triumph for President Trump, and anyone who thinks otherwise is just not playing chess in enough dimensions. Consider what is the greater mark of strategic genius: to mire yourself and your administration in an endless series of idiotic and pointless controversies, often rife with misspellings, damaging your standing at home and abroad, or to NOT do that? If you say the second, you are a fool. This is all part of the plan. Actually, this is good. Actually, this is great.â
âI repeat, every move that Trump makes, has made or is making, currently, with the president of Finland sitting helplessly by his side, wearing an expression of alarm, is planned. It is a genius plan. It might look like the random, haphazard flailing of a cat that has gotten its head stuck in a bucket. But actually he is in total control.â

One of the useful bits of our system when it comes to fighting against corruption is that itâs typically pretty diffuse in nature, especially the DOJ. US Attorneys, especially on the criminal side, tend to work fairly independent of the main DOJ in part because most crimes tend to be local. But the same thing is true for most agencies, the WH and Cabinet heads might hand down policy but itâs typically left to the career types to actually carry out that policy. Thatâs why you rarely see claims of widespread corruption - if thereâs a problem, itâs usually isolated.

I started listening to Limbaugh shortly after 9/11, listened fairly consistently for about 5 years or so. One of the things I remember him always bitching about is how âcompromise means the liberals get whatever they want and we go along with itâ and then saying that since the GOP had the majority âcompromiseâ should work the other way. Iâm beginning to think we need to find ways to decouple the offices of the president and vice-president.
For one, Iâm not sure it makes sense to consider the VP part of the executive branch, since most of the officeâs constitutional duties are actually legislative in nature.
Part of me feels like it would be better to actually vote for the offices separately (how that would effect the actual electoral vote is another question, but most states bind their electors to the popular will anyway).

And getting the voters to throw up their hands in disgust. Thatâs the response Trump wants. Thatâs how he wins.

The only real change in the 12th Amendment was that there are now separate ballots cast in the electoral college rather than a single ballot. Most of how the Vice Presidency works today is a modern construction, post WWII mostly, and because the parties captured the VP nominations.

We heard this in 2016. GOP had no plan. It was repeal and donât bother replacing. Democrats retook the House in 2018 on strength of their fight to protect health coverage for Americans.
2018 - Trump claimed he had another tax cut in his pocket weeks before the midterms, but that was total vaporware since no one saw a plan. It never existed. Trump doesnât have a health care plan either.
2019 - again with the tax cuts and health care plans. GOP had a decade to come up with an alternative to the ACA, and all they could agree was try and repeal it legislatively (and that failed in bipartisan manner), or try the courts to achieve the same result.
At this rate, Trump will roll out an infrastructure week plan in 3⊠2⊠1âŠ
