From the previous thread:
re: #315 Florida Panhandler

The Grapes of Wrath is probably without question gone as well.

These books are gaining ground in an Alaskan town after a school board voted to remove them from class (CNN)

(CNN)Ever since an Alaska school board voted to remove five books from elective high school classes, the titles of the works have come alive throughout the community.

One city council member reads excerpts from her favorite book on Facebook every night. An attorney began a movement to reward students who read them. Hundreds have joined a Facebook group to voice their opposition to the removal. And a local bookstore owner says donations have been pouring in since the vote from community members who want her shop to give teenagers those books for free.

“There’s been a huge response from the community,” says Mary Ann Cockle, owner of Fireside Books in Palmer. “The outpouring of support and concern about banning and censorship has been quite a surprise — but in a good way.”

In Kansas the dems flipped the election to mail in, and we are up 352% over 2016 totals, and have until 5/2 to keep getting ballots.

Man, Trump is a shit show, but it kills me people have such a low opinion of the US. We have 24 potential vaccines in development in the US, 2 of them already in phase 1 trials. We still have many of the best research institutions and minds in the world and while that doesn’t guarantee we will be the first to a vaccine I also wouldn’t bet against it.

That being said everybody would probably be better off if we all worked cooperatively. And Trump is a dick

What I believe is that Trump is fucking things up and he is making shit worse. And part of what he is doing is killing people and, rather than having us work together, he’s got people fighting against each other and for their lives.

But I do wonder how effective his rule is since many companies are international.

He’s a treasure, but in 2001 Patrick Stewart and Mercedes Ruehl starred in a production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. Alright. I got that out of my system. It’s a rainy day here in the wild north country, accompanied by a lot of mental and emotional damage. It’s starting to take its toll on fishfolk and I am struggling to hold the family together.

New numbers: 2561 new tested, up to 63829, showing a sustained uptick since last week; 365 new positives, for a total of 4181; 15 new dead, up to 301. The increase in positives/test is due to the fact that they are starting to focus testing on vulnerable and symptomatic populations first. How go things among the lizardfolk on this raw, miserable spring day?

I posted this on April 4th.

The truth is we’re not.

To be honest, I doubt Americans have the patience for it. The plutocrats are already floating a few trial balloons - graded isolation of just the elderly, 100k deaths are a small price to pay, and so forth - to see what Americans will tolerate. The answer, as always, is that they will tolerate anything they’re told to if the TV repeats it enough, and it will be hard to keep people caring about something as abstract as deaths.

Isolation has slowly started to work in the hardest hit areas. Spain and Italy are losing about a thousand people a day, but the doubling rate has slowed considerably. While the US is behind the curve a bit, I expect that doubling rate will also slow, as it has elsewhere, and we may well start to see the curve level off, maybe at 30,000 deaths or so. At that point, we will have been on lockdown for at least two weeks, which is practically an eternity. The voices crying that 30,000 deaths is a tiny amount, less than car accidents, less than the flu, and that the experts know nothing because they predicted a million deaths and here we are doing fine, will become overwhelming. After a few weeks of isolation, 30,000 or so deaths will seem meaningless, especially when they expected 100k at least. The god emperor will be praised as a deity for only 30,000 deaths. Those who say that isolation is working and we should keep doing what’s working will be scorned as fearmongers. And America will reopen.

Of course the question is whether he will take more votes from Trump who wouldn’t have voted Democrat, than from people who would have voted Democrat without him on the ballot.

And the really important question is how he’ll poll in Michigan.

Bill Weld (LP VP nominee, former MA governor), ~basically did that at the last moment, but the LP still did their best ever (though like for most third parties, much lower than they polled).

Of course, there are _far_ fewer people who are willing to go third party this time. Hopefully.

Rockwall announced 17 more cases today. 5 in the city of Rockwall, two in Royse City, 1 in Fate, and 9 at that long term care facility, Broadmoor. The county is now at 89, and I think 16 of them are at that place alone.

So the LP does have primaries, but they’re non-binding. Even though Vermin Supreme* has won 2 states, and Jacob Hornberger (Blogger) has won 6, they could be overriden by the delegates to their convention, the process for which I haven’t been able to figure out, other than it’s proportional to the LP’s 2016 presidential vote share.

I went to Rockwall’s emergency management facebook page, and found this update:

Broadmoor Medical Lodge Update: All testing of residents and staff is complete. To date, there are a total of 26 COVID-19 cases, 20 residents, and 6 staff. Of these 26 cases, 11 were asymptomatic and showed no signs of having COVID-19. This is why it’s important to wear a mask when around others, asymptomatic spread is occurring. The total number of positive cases in this update does not match the graphic update on Facebook or the County website. This is because Broadmoor has shared real-time information with us and the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) data lags a bit behind. Prayers for all.

The Alabama primary is over, but the Republicans have to return to the polls 14 July for a (postponed) run-off. A senate seat is at stake. The Republican state administration has resisted any calls for easing rigid absentee ballot requirements. Should be a good test of their resolve.

The first pair is absolutely exquisite (Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls) and then the audiobooks have narrators that fit PERFECTLY for my interpretation of the characters. Gah. Anecdotes are not data. That having been said I have personal knowledge of quite a number of small mfg companies in the jewelry district that applied in the first day or two. They all told employees that was how they would keep checks coming. One employer of mine paid a month. Then just had to stop. Nothing coming in. Great guy tried really hard.

Six companies applied. Zero loans. Employees can’t get EDD until that site catches up and those checks roll. It’s tight out there, and at a better off than most level honestly.

I am absolutely in favor of mail-in ballots, but I keep looking at the covid-19 cases in WI and not seeing much election effect. There was a spike 14-18 days after the election, total of a few hundred cases. That’s out of nearly a million ballots cast. Even with those included, the overall “progress” in WI doesn’t look like it was affected much.

Still want to see absentee voting everywhere, but 300/1,000,000 is a risk I would be willing to take to cast my vote (much less arduous than crawling over ground glass).

They are also lactose intolerant.

My brother was told to pull dairy out of his diet to deal with persistent GI complaints. So he did. But he bought some lactose free milk and after five days with no dairy, decided to enjoy a bowl of cereal with this milk last night for dinner. He was up all night with lower GI distress. So it doesn’t appear to be lactose that’s causing the problem. (One of my friends suggested casein is the issue?) In any case, he’s moving on to try almond milk because he really likes cereal on nights when he doesn’t feel like cooking.

Earlier today, we had this forwarded to us:

The Small Business Administration has restricted the use of robotic processing automation, or RPA, to enter Paycheck Protection Program loan applications amid lenders’ significant difficulties accessing the E-Tran system.

*snip*

SBA is still permitting lenders to submit PPP applications through application programming interfaces, or APIs. For assistance converting an RPA process to an API, SBA advised lenders to contact agency official Sheri McConville.

bankingjournal.aba.com

My evil too big to fail employer had a bunch of loans that didn’t get submitted the last time the window was open because the window closed before the loans could get through whatever cumbersome process the SBA required. Apparently our loans were formatted for RPA, including the ones we tried to submit starting on Monday. I have no idea what we’re doing now. (Not my wheelhouse, they have someone full-time on that.)

The whole thing is an utter cluster.

So apparently Amash is considering seeking the Libertarian nomination. Can’t say I’m particularly surprised. And not entirely sure it’s a bad thing. As I mentioned earlier: any vote that is not for Trump is better than a vote that would otherwise be for Trump.

I was looking at the numbers from 2016 again and there’s a decent argument that Johnson being on the ballot in a few states may have actually helped Clinton win those states. Assuming that most of those Johnson voters would have otherwise voted for the Republican nominee.

It wasn’t the people who voted in 2016, it was the people who *didn’t* vote. It’s all about turnout. As much as we blamed Jill Stein and Johnson, the problem was the GOTV push by the Dem National Committee was woefully inadequate. They thought they had it in the bag. They fucked the dog. Did the Russians help? Hell, yes. But they still fucked the dog.

Time to fill in my Nebraska Primary Ballot.

The choices are at Ballotpedia.
ballotpedia.org

The only Democrat running for NE-3 previously ran for a state office on the Legalize Marijuana Now Party ticket, so I’m guessing Adrian Smith will annihilate him in the general election.

There is also a $0.02 per $100 valuation village levy increase for the town cemetery for maintenance, capital improvements, land acquisition, &c. It expires at the end of FY 2025 (fiscal years in my village end on June 30). I don’t think that will kill me to vote “yes” for. Besides, someone will need to keep up the lawn mower for my plot there.

We got an errata letter from the county clerk regarding balloting for the school board primary. The ballot is marked “vote for one” but the errata letter says it should be “vote for three.”

It looks like half of the Village of Dalton is running for the school board on the Democratic Primary ticket.

They’ve had a reason for weeks now to put the kibosh on the coverage, but they kept going back and kept making excuses about how these briefings included “vital information.” Even when doctors and medical organizations were calling bullshit on hydroxychloroquine, saying that it was untested/unverified and dangerous to take in the dosages the French quack purported to have “100% success” with, they kept letting Donny pump out to the public that it was a “cure” that doctors needed to be forced to write prescriptions for because “What do you got to lose?”

That could be the reason. I can easily imagine the honchos at the legal departments of CNN, CBS, ABC and NBC sweating bullets over the possibility of liability lawsuits. It may be a remote possibility, but probably enough of one to keep them up at night.

Except for CNN, none of the networks on that list have carried the briefings live in weeks anyway, though.

Perhaps they’re offering optional coverage to affiliates, but my local stations here have been ignoring it. Even the Sinclair station - it’s not interrupting its 5 and 6 PM newscasts on the ABC affiliate, though it also owns the Fox station in town and blows out the judge show reruns there to carry the clown show.

MSNBC still gives it some airtime. I’d be happy to see that practice end.

OK, folks, time to face reality.

The Tara Reade accusation isn’t going away. The WaPo has it in a sidebar on the main page, primarily due to a Business Insider post involving individuals who endorse Reade’s account.

As a 30-year former journalist, it is to the point where I would reasonably be asking Biden to make a full statement (if not an unfettered interview) regarding the contention. To be sure, there are numerous, proper questions regarding Reade’s allegation and the timing.

But Biden should recognize he has to to counter doubt to his character. Silence - or even the appearance of obfuscation - can be quite deadly..

Fair notice: I philosophically supported Warren at the outset. But I always believed Biden would win out when the contest became between just two, true Democrats.

So let’s put this crap to rest until it becomes a major issue (which it will) in the summer or fall. And if there is any chance this crap is true (despite a full VP vetting, not to mention his time in the Senate), I would deservedly be disappointed.

And that’s the thing, isn’t it? The GOP would have made up or dragged up anything and put it front-and-centre in the credulous press no matter who the candidate was. Warren? Fake Indian!!

Harris or Klobuchar? Cops!!

Buttigieg? Teh Geyh!!

Any Democrat? All communists to the left of Castro!! (and if Castro had won, you know the GOP would have drawn a false connexion between him and Cuba.)

And that wouldn’t just come from the right, it would also come from the left. I note Nebr. State Senator Megan Hunt, who in a candidate questionnaire came out front and said she was both an atheist and bi-. When asked by Hemant Mehta why she would admit that in a political campaign, she said she was staving off charges in the Democratic Primary by getting out front.

The same happened to Rep. Pete Stark in California, when Eric Swalwell took him out in a series of attack adverts claiming he was un-American for being an atheist. (I would have real problems ever voting for or supporting Swalwell if he ran for President, because I won’t vote for a bigot who thinks I’m un-American.)

Politics isn’t beanbags. If Biden addresses it at all, I think he should simply refer to previous reporting and move on.

His campaign’s given the only answer that there needs to be: “He denies it, we deny it, but let the media do their own investigation and reach their own conclusions.” So far, the media outlets that have looked into it have come away admitting that her credibility is totally lacking and she has no answers only excuses.

And really, that’s what’s frustrating the hell out of them: He’s not playing to script. He’s not rushing the cameras to give a big televised denial, he’s not attacking her or anybody connected to her, he’s not making a big fuss about the media’s attention to the story, he’s simply telling them to do their jobs and it’s driving them batty.

I accept and appreciate the above analyses. But you and I both know that will not be enough. Again, sweeping something under the rug will only sow doubt. Go ahead and make a podium statement denying the accusation and lay out the reasons why. Obama cut off the race question early on. Biden can, and should, be able to do the same. I don’t believe Ms. Beade’s accusation, simply because it runs counter to everything I have known - or heard - about VP Biden. But we cannot give the other side any whiff of ammunition.

As for conclusions, Business Insider found 2 people to corroborate. Whether credible or not, that has to be acknowledged. So, yes, Joe Biden needs to speak about this.

See, that’s the problem, BI has about as much credibility as the Daily Caller yet their headlines are being taken as “fact” that only support her case. They hide the actual transcript of the interview with the first “witness” because in it is an admission that the two hadn’t been in contact in years and didn’t reconnect until after Reade made her initial “accusation” last year. And the other only says that Reade claimed to have been the subject of sexual harassment at her last job and nothing was done about it.

There’s a reason cops interview witnesses independent of each other and make sure not to lay out all the facts of a case to the press until they’re sure they either have a suspect or they have no other choice. Both of these “witnesses” are unreliable at best, no matter what the clickbait headline BI sells the story under says.

re: #218 TarHellion

There are, I think, two options at hand:

1) Trump and his team may try, but they can’t play the moral high ground. For any woman who may make an accusation against Biden we can find a couple of dozen who will do so with Trump, with even cruder actions on Trump’s behalf. While the Trumpers will deny this, the rest of the electorate can see it. So I guess Biden doesn’t really need to address the allegation if he wants to play hardball and start dumping the dirt on Trump.

2) Biden is already the not-Trump for anyone who are not hard core right wing god talkers (and their maniacal masters in the monied class.) However, if in a couple of swing states the allegation of Reade makes a difference with independent female voters, the Biden should go to those states and talk to the voters (not astroturf goons) who seem to be bothered and make a statement.

Notice how I didn’t even bother to address any objective moral qualms one may have with inappropriate behavior on Biden’s part. I am now so cynical that I see that Trump’s triumph over the religious right, in moving their supposed Christian fundamentalism to a more out-of-the-closet Christian nationalism, that I think there is no constructive public dialogue be had in regards to morals.

Let me repeat that: The US (as far as public politics is concerned) is now so corrupted by the last few years of Trump that there is no real moral discussion. All that remains is tribal warfare.

Does that mean I think there is no actual morality in a society? No. It’s just that I think one can’t really make any changes at this late stage in the 2020 election because I believe, sparing any further revelations that are such a magnitude that they can steal the national discussion away from Covid-19 for the remaining 6 months until the election, that the election now is pretty much over (Biden will win, which is why the GOP analysts have advised GOP politicians to not campaign on defending Trump.)

And given the pandemic is, well, a pandemic that has already taken almost 60k lives in the US and by November that will be much larger, any additional revelations in regards to either Biden or Trump would have to be damn large to make a difference come election day. And I’m not expecting such a thing.

Obama didn’t cut off the race question. He ignored it. It wasn’t relevant.

As for the Birthers, they had “credible” people corroborate his birth certificate. When he finally produced a birth certificate, birthers just declared it fake, and even produced faked certificates to circulate on social media. The Hawai’i official in charge of vital records was declared to be a co-conspirator when she verified Obama’s filed certificate.

The GOP will never be satisfied, and neither with the rodent-copulators. It fits the “feeding the trolls” model: don’t. Or call them crackpots. Or refer to previous reporting. That’s not sweeping it under the rug.

Boy there seems to be a bunch of pessimistic people about this. How is this any different than any other GOP campaign in the last sixty years?

Conservatives don’t actually care if that sort of crap was true, or they wouldn’t have nominated Pumpkin Pinochet. It’s all entirely to weaponise Democrats’ basic decency against themselves, to put the ol’ “both parties are the same” argument out to suppress voter turnout.

Nearly 70 residents sickened with the coronavirus have died at a Massachusetts home for ageing veterans, as state and federal officials try to figure out what went wrong in the deadliest known outbreak at a long-term care facility in the US.

While the death toll at the state-run Holyoke Soldiers’ Home continues to climb, federal officials are investigating whether residents were denied proper medical care and the state’s top prosecutor is deciding whether to bring legal action.

There are, I think, two options at hand:

1) Trump and his team may try, but they can’t play the moral high ground. For any woman who may make an accusation against Biden we can find a couple of dozen who will do so with Trump.

The long game here is to breed indifference: “Why vote at all? there is no difference between two old white establishment rapists!”

Back a few weeks I wrote that I noticed a pattern in the daily death totals, that there was a weekend effect, seen by a roughly 7 day interval in dips in daily reports.

But I see a lot of people, educated and not, state on say Sundays that it looks like deaths are going down.

Well, the past three days support my assertion:

This reporting-cycle is fooling a lot of people.

There has been a gradual global decline the past two and a half weeks or so, but that is because the two countries which had the highest deaths for several weeks, Italy and Spain, have seen daily deaths on a downward trajectory.

Globally though many countries are just ramping up their death reporting, such as Brazil and Russia. And I remain skeptical that we’re getting anywhere near reliable death data from India.

281
Targetpractice  Apr 29, 2020 • 5:14:57am

What happens when Biden makes a statement? The media coverage turns from actually assessing the credibility of the charges to picking apart the statement. If they can’t find any factual errors, they say that certain verbage or usage of certain words “raises questions.” They bring in “experts” to analyze his body language, his gestures, his facial expressions, every part of his physical appearance to look for “duplicity.” And they bring in panels of “voters” to comment on what they think of the statement, how they “feel” about Biden after listening to him and watching him.

What they don’t do is nod and say “Well, he’s made his statement, let’s move on.”

And it’s the best response.

Because, in part that if he responds to it as a legitimate distraction and brings it solidly into the discourse there will be nothing settled. Because even if the Reade case dies away it will be all too easy for the hit machine to roll out another accuser, and we see this on repeat until November. (And pointing to Trump’s issues in this regard plays into the a counter strategy of “both sides do it, so vote for neither” as a vote suppression effort.)

Some potentially good news:

South Korean infectious disease experts have downplayed concerns that patients could get reinfected with the new coronavirus after fully recovering.
While hundreds in South Korea have tested positive again after their release from hospitals, Oh Myoung-don, who heads the country’s central clinical committee on new infectious diseases, told a news conference on Wednesday there was a “high possibility” that such test results were flawed.

He said South Korea”s standard real-time PCR tests, designed to amplify the genetic materials of the virus so that even tiny quantities are detected, doesn’t reliably distinguish between remains of dead virus and infectious particles. He said lab tests on animals suggest that COVID-19 patients would maintain immunity for at least a year after their infections.

He also said it was unlikely that the virus could be reactivated after remaining dormant when it doesn’t seem to be a type that causes chronic illnesses.

As of Tuesday, 277 people in South Korea tested positive for the virus for a second time after being diagnosed as recovered. Health authorities have tested some of their samples, but none so far have been successfully cultivated in isolation, indicating a loss of infectiousness.

They always project that Democrats want to redistribute wealth to the poor, but the reality is that GOPers are successful at transferring massive amounts of wealth from all Americans to the richest of the rich. That’s the point of the tax cuts and every tax plan put forth by the GOP over the last 40 years. It’s all about accumulating wealth in the richest Americans while shifting the burdens to everyone else.

And that needs to be front and center in any discussion. Democrats shouldn’t be shying away from this. GOP are totally on board with redistribution of wealth. They want to take from the poor and middle class and give it to the richest people on the planet.

As someone your same age — yes there’s always been a faction, which started gaining strength in Goldwater’s time, but the right wing didn’t really consolidate control over the party until Reagan.

Earl Warren retired from the Court in 1969. Ford and Rockefeller were pretty liberal on domestic issues. The Nixon admin did EPA, OSHA, Title IX, Title X.

Well… after the 1964 election they were declared dead. I’d say their comeback didn’t really start until Nixon and the southern strategy.

There was a story involving Siegfried and Roy and how Roy came out onstage with a new pair of python-skin boots. This prompted one of the cats to leap down and attack them, thinking they were a threat to their beloved trainer.

It all happened so quickly, and everybody was in such shock and surprise that nobody was sure which of the tigers had done it.

So later, after the victim had awakened in the hospital, they came with photos and asked:

“Pardon me, Roy, is this the cat that chewed your new shoes?”

Well, what’s most likely is the ICC presenting the United States with an ultimatum:
Either you try him and/or his henchmen, or we do.
And as you point out, he and his underlings are in hot water outside of the executive branch of the United States.
You may think it unlikely, but there have to and fro been murmors about criminals from the big nations getting away with crimes, and criminals from small nations getting harsh punishment, so there is certainly a will to make an example that no-one is above the law.
And even though Darth Orange will never see any sanctions for his behavior, his underlings may, and the proceedings themselves may forever tarnish his reputation.

And before that, rampant inflation leading to wage and price controls under Nixon, followed by “stagflation” under Ford.

The economy did well from the previous Republican president (Eisenhower) because the rest of the world was rebuilding after WW2 (and we had a 95% top marginal tax rate).

Prior to that, Hoover and the Great Depression.

Wind back further, the Panic of 1893 (which was the worst depression before the so-called Great one) was under President William McKinley.

Should go read the review quotes on Rotten Tomatoes. Ranges from: worst movies ever; Xenophobic; terrible acting ; stilted dialog; special effects that would make the 80s cringe. To ZOMG even my atheist daughter loved it; great acting; profound questions; etc

As someone noted, wouldn’t jebus dying period do that whole new covenant completion thing or was there some preordained dying on a Roman cross that sealed the deal? And gods and time travel…

So how does this turkey movie end?
Because in virtually EVERY time-travelers-change-history property I’ve seen/read/heard of (print, TV, movies), the usual upshot is that the desired outcome is definitely NOT what was intended.
The plot is that Muslim time-travelers go back to 33 to off Jesus before he can be crucified? Which supposedly “erases” Christianity from history? To me, the ending is pre-ordained: the time travelers come back to their own time to find that they have also “erased” Muhammed, and that Saudi Arabia in 2020 is, officially, a Buddhist (or better yet, Jewish) country….

And before that, rampant inflation leading to wage and price controls under Nixon, followed by “stagflation” under Ford.

The economy did well from the previous Republican president (Eisenhower) because the rest of the world was rebuilding after WW2 (and we had a 95% top marginal tax rate).

Funny how that works, isn’t it?

Prior to that, Hoover and the Great Depression.

Wind back further, the Panic of 1893 (which was the worst depression before the so-called Great one) was under President William McKinley.

I can’t come up with any Republican president who didn’t screw the pooch on the economy, because after Lincoln, they’ve always been the party of big business, and big businesses want to own all the wealth.

Fella—Cleveland was President during the Panic of 1893…that led to Bryan’s hijacking of the Democratic Party and the election of McKinley.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Amanda Marcotte considered a widely respected journalist with liberal leanings?

After reading her Salon piece, I thought to myself that it’s just a matter of time before Marcotte becomes a “conservative hack” because she’s not 100% vindicating all of Reade’s accusations.

I really thought about posting it at one site that is full-on “Joe Biden is a rapist” to see if that would be the reaction. I never did, but the tweet you posted seems to bare that out.

As I said before, if this is ratfucking, it’s doing its intended job of making sure hardcore lefties stay home (not that they needed a push.)

Last night, I got called by SSRI to do a poll. We’ll see how the results stack up, but it was about covid19, telepresence, web conferencing, and related issues. They also asked about my confidence in going out in a group right now. They asked about going in a group of 1 other person, less than 10, less than 100, less than 1,000, or more than 1,000 people. 0-5 scale with 0 no confidence/willingness to go, and 5 being willing to go with no reservations. I went from 4 for one other person right now to 3 for less than 10 to 0 for anything over 10 people. Seeing how so many people don’t get how to wear masks, and we’re in the heart of the mess here in northern NJ, I have even less confidence elsewhere. I don’t see going to a ballgame this year, or any concerts, because I don’t trust this to be contained. I am reevaluating my travel plans, and will probably avoid shopping at supermarkets or the mall unless it’s absolutely necessary. Minimizing exposures as much as possible.

2) Raised and educated that they are above the lower classes and the only way to maintain privilege is to constantly war to keep them under control.

Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN a second wave of the coronavirus is “inevitable,” but just how bad it is will depend on the progress the U.S. makes in the coming months.

Said Fauci: “If by that time we have put into place all of the countermeasures that you need to address this, we should do reasonably well. If we don’t do that successfully, we could be in for a bad fall and a bad winter.”

What he really meant was “Since by that time we will have failed to put into place all of the countermeasures that you need to address this, looks like we are really in for a bad fall and a bad winter.”

I responded about how it won’t happen due to maintenance costs, technician costs, etc. as has been discussed here whenever this item periodically comes around. (And that if it really was economical MacDonald’s would have already done it.)

Response to that was “It will happen in time.” Which I took as sufficient reason to not engage further since the backstop goal post had already been put up to indicate that the OP was not really looking for a discussion but just tossing out a talking point for his local echo chamber.

In part it’s because a capitalist meritocracy keeps score by wealth. Though I’d argue that a non-meritocracy system would arguably be worse since it’d probably fall back on an aristocracy or caste system given human preference for arbitrary tribal distinctions and I guess a need to feel superior to someone else by default.

I’ve looked at installing a small flock of chickens, mostly for eggs. The rules in our neighborhood permit it. Wife says neighbor’s cats will kill them. We are honorary Vicentini, the Italian magnagatti. Cats are protein.

Vicenza’s cuisine is deeply defined by the foods people prepared generations ago when Vicenza, along with the Veneto, experienced crippling poverty as a result of droughts, plagues, famines and wars caused by political machinations. For example, the local nickname “magnagatti” (literally cat-eaters) originated from a time when rumors started to circulate that the people of Vicenza, out of poverty and desperation, started eating cats. Although the truth behind the rumor is debatable, the locals’ full acceptance of the nickname and pride in being called cat-eaters attest to the resilience of Vicenza’s people as well as its culinary traditions.

The US is not a signatory to the ICC. However, crimes against humanity, like piracy, are considered to have universal jurisdiction, which means that any nation could try an accused regardless of nationality or where in the world the offence was committed. So, any country that has the laws in place for it could arrest him and try him in their national court system. I think Dick Cheney has been pretty careful about where he travels.

The company also said another trial by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases met its main goal. It did not provide further details, however.

Shares of Gilead were up more than 3% in midmorning trading.

The clinical trial involved 397 patients with severe cases of Covid-19. The severe study is “single-arm,” meaning it did not evaluate the drug against a control group of patients who didn’t receive the drug.

While war crimes and genocide have universal jurisdiction, crimes against humanity aren’t quite there. With respect to crimes against humanity, this is how the UN defines the term. And that’s tied to the ICC, which, again, the US is no longer a signatory.* I’m not sure you could technically claim any of Trump’s actions constitute an “attack” against a civilian population.

*Even if someone were to argue that the US couldn’t “unsign” the treaty, a president would only have to submit it to the Senate for ratification and watch it go down in flames.

We’re gonna have good form of protection. Through quarantine, when we find somebody that’s not - we’re gonna be - they’re gonna be very careful. They are

Like, any good liar knows, the less you say, the better. He should have stopped at “we are working on a report that will have guidelines that should protect everyone.” Keep it vague, allow the listener to fill in the blanks, and defer an actual answer by saying a formal statement is coming later. A Louisville woman who had tested positive for the novel coronavirus was arrested Monday after police said she refused a court order to self-quarantine and went inside the Kroger at Central Station.

Kendra A. Burnett, 37, was arrested just before 10:30 a.m. at the Kroger, 3165 S. Second St., after her mother told a Louisville Metro Police officer that she was violating a court order to self-quarantine, according to an arrest citation.

(snip)

On Monday, Burnett’s mother pointed her out to the LMPD officer as Burnett left the store, the citation said.

The LMPD officer contacted the county attorney as well, who said Burnett had refused to self-quarantine about three times, according to the arrest report, which did not say when Burnett had tested positive for COVID-19.

Fella—Cleveland was President during the Panic of 1893…that led to Bryan’s hijacking of the Democratic Party and the election of McKinley.

That’s correct … the Panic started in the final days of McKinley’s administration. When Cleveland became President, he exacerbated the problem by repealing the Silver Purchase Act, because he felt only the gold standard was acceptable.

With the repeal of that act, bank runs started across the whole country. That was the source of Bryant’s “Cross of Gold” speech, the idea that Cleveland would crucify the country for the benefit of eastern banking interests which wanted a gold standard at the expense of midwestern and western farmers and businesses.

The problem had started in Argentina with the collapse of a bank there followed by a military coup.

If he spoke coherently, he may not have his fanatic base. They would feel he’s just another politician speaking smoothly and lying to them (just as Ted Cruz does). Instead he talks in the language of the racists around them — not smoothly but speaking to them, like a normal person who fumbles for words. This style confirms his authenticity to them — he reacts the way they would.

Good morning! Time for the obligatory “just back from Costco” report:

I scored everything on my list except yeast (which I won’t actually need for a while yet, but it never hurts to look, does it?) They even had TP, which was going fast and a small amount of Pepcid (no generic) which I bought because now that we live in a Soviet dystopia, I figured I should buy for Mr. C. while I could. The really important stuff, coffee, Medjool dates, blueberries, chips, etc. were in abundance. Plenty of meat, though apparently you could only buy one giant bag of frozen chicken at a time. I didn’t test that theory because I have some miscellaneous meat in the freezer, and if it became suddenly unavailable (which it won’t,) I don’t fear a vegetarian diet for a while.

Tangentially related: Trump is an idiot.

That is all.

Panic of 1907 essentially resulted in the Federal Reserve System forming. Since J P Morgan and the eastern banks had done a lot to prevent that particular panic from being worse by putting up a bunch of money and helping stop the run on the banks. That was quickly viewed as not necessarily being a good thing since some argued that said banks gained more influence thereby.

America did not have large, international stock corporations when the Constitution was drafted. Most businesses were small affairs, owned and run by one person or family. Which meant that unions were painted as gangs using undue leverage on an individual.

The big issue at the time of the drafting of the Constitution would be whether we’d remain an agrarian society or mercantile/business. It was Jefferson versus Hamilton, and Hamilton’s vision won out. Hamilton pushed for industrial development, and even helped advance that with a facility in Paterson NJ next to the Great Falls to try and create power for industrial purposes.

I get really tired of people (GENERIC) who seem to think everything from government to technology to people’s attitudes is unchanged since the beginning of time.

I was simply referring to how Republicans treated the economy as it existed in each presidency.

No matter how the economy was viewed in what era, Republicans screwed it up. Regardless of the economic setup, the GOP has always been the party of big business since the end of the Civil War. Thus their economic policies, regardless of how people viewed the economy, tended to favour big businesses at the expense of everyone else. Hence all the panics and economic collapses.

Collapsing the silver industry by the GOP lead to a Populist Party governor elected in Colorado. When Gov. Waite sought to remove corrupt officials from Denver installed by the GOP, they used gangsters and criminals to barricade themselves into city hall. The governor had to use the state militia to dislodge them. Following that, the GOP fought in court all the way to the state supreme court to argue Gov. Waite did not have the authority to remove corrupt city commissioners (the court ruled in favour of the governor).

Protestants aligned with the GOP formed a protective society, the purpose of which was to force businesses to fire Catholics. In response, the Catholic Church infiltrated the organisation to out corrupt GOP officials leading it.

The Populist Party of the XIX promoted collectivism and labour with the help of people like Eugene Debs, and in 1892 won four states in the Presidential election (the idea government should interfere in the economy). The party collapsed with Williams Jennings Bryant taking over their message and making it part of the Democratic Party platform.

*snerk*

Probably CL’d at this point, but that’s a variation I don’t remember on the (probably older) version that involved Roy Rogers, new cowboy boots and a bobcat.

Still worth a groan.

EDIT: never mind, addressed later in the thread.
I’ll catch up one of these days………..
