Hitchens: Cynicism by the Book

Hamid Karzai’s evil response to the Koran-burning
World • Views: 26,549

In a new column for Slate, Christopher Hitchens focuses on Hamid Karzai’s incitement of violence against foreigners.

As someone who advances the quaint belief that the removal of two of the worst regimes in the region—the Taliban and the Iraqi Baath Party—did not have nothing to do with the subsequent democracy “wave,” I also find it discouraging that some of the loudest expressions of sectarian emotion have come from Afghanistan and Iraq. Muqtada Sadr’s supporters have chosen to make Bahrain into an issue of pure Shiite self-pity, as if the local ambitions of Iran were to be discounted entirely. And Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s ruling group, fresh from a clumsy attempt to ban the Iraqi Communist Party for its role in street protests, also seems to view the Gulf crisis through a single confessional optic.

But this narrowness pales beside the truly awful opportunism and cynicism of Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai. In previous cases of irrational violence, such as the bloody riots that occurred on the mere rumor of a Quran being desecrated in Guantanamo, he had taken quite a responsible line (pointing out, for example, that one library destroyed by the incendiaries had contained several fine old Qurans). Unlike some provincial mullahs, Karzai also knows perfectly well that the U.S. government is constitutionally prohibited from policing religious speech among its citizens. Yet, when faced with the doings of the aforementioned moronic cleric from Gainesville, he went out of his way to intensify mob feeling. This caps a long period where his behavior has come to seem like a conscious collusion with warlordism, organized crime, and even with elements of the Taliban. Already under constant pressure to make consistent comments about Syria and Libya, the Obama administration might want to express itself more directly about a man for whose fast-decomposing regime we are shedding our best blood.

Time to stop supporting Karzai. He just got 12 UN workers from various nations killed. We should have set up a different government in the area, instead of the one there now.

One thing that always struck me as completely irrational and illogical is: if God truly is almighty, then why would burning a book necessitate flawed human beings to carry out punishment for any offense he might feel? In fact, why would he even care? Do we actually get enraged when ants "dirty" something we hold dear? And if we do, do we call other ants to squash them?

God is supposed to be infinitely more power than I am towards an ant, so if I don't get angry but God apparently does, doesn't that make me far better than God?

It doesn't make any sense. Then again, as an Atheist, maybe I just don't "get it"....

Karzai's opportunism is enabled by our physical defense of him. He really is biting the hand that is feeding him (at least currently.)

Perhaps Karzai is looking at an Afghanistan post-US occupation? Perhaps he is trying to set himself up as sort of a Taliban-lite option with whom the local (more hardcore) tribal leaders will work, once US troops leave?

In the Middle East and in America, religion has become the biggest problem that threatens the peace of the world. It is truly appalling that we are dealing with this in the 21st century. One would have hoped humanity has progressed beyond this point. Alas, all available evidence is that we have regressed.

hence he can afford to do this, because we need him

re: #2 Summer

Now you're hitting at one of the key roles that religion has played in the development of human societies. Without a doubt the idea of tribal revenge finds its way into the local tribe's religion.

The our-god-is-bigger-than-your-god is an abstraction, a human creation intended to universalize and justify, of the our-tribe-is-victorious-over-your-tribe group competition.

Yes, that sounds a bit of an arm-chair evolutionary psychology type of thing, but that is how I view what we're seeing now in this "holy" book pissing match.

Don't expect it any time soon. Karzai knows his continued place in power relies upon our presence there keeping the wolves at bay while he can negotiate long-term deals with them. We unass tomorrow, by Friday, he'll be either on the run or run up a pole.

We did it for the same reason that we did the same in Iraq, namely to give our occupation some air of "legitimacy," that we were there to enforce "regime change" instead of add to our empire. We threw out the MacArthur handbook, telling ourselves that these were people yearning for freedom and democracy and we'd give it to them in record time.

It's not considered appropriate for the US to occupy nations, anymore.

Note: we didn't give Okinawa back to the Japanese until long after the Treaty of San Francisco. Okinawa was essentially a US military base until 1972, 27 years after the end of WWII.

Well, I got some serious pushback here a couple months ago for suggesting that we were, in fact, occupying Iraq.

The argument finally seemed to boil down to, "But if we pulled out right after the invasion, chaos would have followed!!"

No guys. That's WHY we're occupying Iraq. It does not make it untrue that occupying Iraq is, in fact, what we are doing.

I'm not at all sure that I understand what the US is doing in Afghanistan. We've been there for about 9 and a half years now! Maybe we use Afghanistan as a base for forays into Pakistan and Iran. Maybe Afghanistan and Iraq are how we bracket Iran on 2 sides. I have no idea. But this is not how the United States, supposedly a democracy, should work. Our President should explain to the people what on earth we are doing in Afghanistan. Also, we should SEPARATE the ideas of war and nation-building. If we have enemies in or near Afghanistan, let's fight them. But let's not pretend we're building a new, democratic Afghanistan. That's insulting to the Afghans themselves, and by now, it's so silly, it's insulting to us as well.

This, exactly.

I lost my love for Karzai several years ago, when all he could do was damn the US for not sending enough money. Not relief or assistance, but money. Likewise, it was Karzai's brother caught taking millions over the border about a year ago. Coincidence? Of course not. They're opportunistic pirates, the both of them.

I have little faith, and even less empathy, in a people or government whose first reaction - their bankable behavior - to something as stupid as burning a book is 1.) form a mob, and 2.) slaughter innocent people. Karzai's response is to once again damn the US for inciting bad behavior in people who behave badly. Really, there's no reason to expect more from him than this. Gee whiz, it's only 2011, what can we expect?

Yeah, nice to know after something like 10 years, we can count on that. Makes me warm and fuzzy inside about all the progress we've made there if a book being burned takes the whole thing down to its baseline in a matter of hours. Peachy. Just swell.

Sorry, I have no sense of humor about this whatsoever. I mentally ditched that bitch Karzai long before this.

I think the fundamental problem is that we won't insult the Afghans themselves, when that is all they deserve from us, or anyone.

To be truthful, in GWII "we" (or some people) thought that the Iraqis were fundamentally civilized just because they had met some Iraqis who spoke perfect English, and politics, in Washington.

I said that because I smelled a rat. No one paid attention to the post, other than a couple of posters who dismissed it. No recs, no nothing.

The envoy sent by Moammar Gadhafi to the West is testing foreign governments' willingness to accept one of the embattled Libyan leader's sons as his successor, a source close to the Libyan leadership told CNN Monday.

Under the proposal, Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, 38, would take over from his father and help to usher in swift reform, the source said.

Once thought to be a leading reformer inside the Libyan government, Saif has emerged as one of his father's most visible defenders since the start of the unrest.

To avoid instability, the transition must "be a gradual handover of power," the source said.

No, it's not just that Karzai is an ass. He didn't just blunder into giving a speech all about the burning of the Koran, which is how he got the info out.

We won't understand that area of the world unless we are always trying to figure out what people's real agendas are, and what's in it for them. I was asking who stood to gain by getting this information out. You folks didn't think that was an interesting question. Turns out, it was.

As far as I'm aware Afghanistan is the only place where this kind of violent reaction to Jones' Koran burning. Is there anyone else who is bothered by the fact that we have been in Afghanistan for nearly 10 years and the US hasn't built up a enough good will or credibility to counteract the actions of one person burning one Koran? I think the POTUS needs to keep his promise of a draw down beginning this summer. It's time to go. We've worn out the welcome we never had in the first place.

Well yeah.

Of course.

From a perfectly rational standpoint, and worse, from the standpoint of Afghanistan, which is not rational at all, the Afghans don't figure as they owe us anything, or have any special relationship with us. We got rid of the Taliban? OK, they'll be back, or more warlords will. The warlords who get the spaces the Taliban left behind may like us for making room at the table, but that will soon turn to 'What Have You Done For Me Lately". Women who remember the old days when you could wear Western clothes on the street may want us to stay, or little girls who like going to school, or old men who get food from a UN program, but they are not the people who control this society.

As far as Afghanistan is concerned, we are just one more invader. They never last long. We built them some shit--fine, the Soviets also built them some shit. (The Kandahar airport is a hilariously fine example of 1960s-era Soviet construction.)

We never had a deal with the Afghans. They never signed on to be part of a nation-building plan. Karzai and his minions may have said so, but that was mainly to get us to pay them.

Here's the thing: NOW you're elaborating on why you asked the question the other night and saying what you think may be happening, which makes the question much more interesting in retrospect.

IIRC, I was one of the people that answered you on Friday, and I said something to the effect that they most likely found out via the internet as the shit-stirrers usually have access (that the common man in the street probably wouldn't). If I'd known you were thinking all of the above, I (and others) probably would have commented on it a lot more.

When the comments are flying fast & furious it's easy to be overlooked, especially if we have to try to figure out your reason for asking. You're clearly intelligent & paying attention to all the angles, so jump in with more force next time. It's just a blog—the worst thing that can happen is that someone gets snarky with you, at which point you can either choose to ignore them or start throwing down, flying scales be damned. ;o)

So, do we sit back and watch the Saudis and Iranians blow each other up (better that they blow each other up rather than us?) or do we worry about an even more dangerous sectarian war that could lead to a extended and deadly sectarian violence?

I think I know the next story the Pamela Geller crowd is going to use to bash us. I found this on Wikinews:

A female boxer has been shot in her dressing room before a world championship title fight by her stepfather in Berlin, Germany. Lebanese born Rola El-Halabi was shot in the hands, knees, and feet while she was preparing for the fight. She survived the shooting but may never be able to return to the ring. Two security guards were also injured in the attack.

There's a hitch in the argument that Geller is going to use, which is the Honor Killing issue:

Malte Mueller-Michaelis, her promoter, commented on her condition saying "Her operation went smoothly, but the shots were intended to end her career and it seems almost certain that that will happen." It is believed that the shooting was due to El-Halabi's decision to stop working with her stepfather as her manager.

The original Hinds did not have hardened glass, but the newer models from the 'Hind D' onward all have had that. As the original Hinds are no longer in service (except in Vietnam), all Hinds in service in Africa have hardened cockpit glass. The Hind was designed as rotary-wing successor the the WWII-era IL-2 Shturmovik (Armored Attacker) ground attack aircraft, so it is heavily protected.

The Iranian people like to go to Iraq and visit Iraqi religious sites, but have really strong feeling over the war. They carry grudges and mourn their dead a long, long time. They go every Friday to the cemeteries. My husband's family still go to his brother's grave every Friday and he was killed in the revolution. Until the US got involved in Afghanistan the Taliban and Iran were enemies. If we leave, the dynamic between Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan is going to be very interesting.

Showtime series tend to contain lots of sex. They can get away with because they're a premium channel and thus much less restricted in what they can show.

TEPCO, once again, states the obvious a bit too late:

TEPCO to drop plan to add 2 reactors at Fukushima nuclear plant

The vice president of Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Monday that the company will withdraw its plan to build two more reactors at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, following its submission of the plan to the government in late March.

''We now think it is impossible to add reactors,'' Takashi Fujimoto told a television program in reference to the plan to add two more reactors to the six-reactor plant.

[...]

TEPCO submitted the plan after the start of the nuclear crisis as it did not have enough time to revise the plan before the end of fiscal 2010 on March 31. The move angered the government of Fukushima Prefecture, where the unfolding nuclear crisis has forced residents to evacuate or stay indoors.

The electricity business law obliges utilities to submit their power supply and construction plans by the end of each fiscal year. [...]

Yeah, sure, they "didn't have time". More like, they didn't want to admit the obvious.

And further more:

Prime Minister Naoto Kan said Thursday that the government will thoroughly rethink Japan's basic energy supply program, which calls for adding 14 or more nuclear power plants by 2030.

There is no doubt that the Fukushima incident (hmm... sounds like a thriller book title: The Fukushima Incident) is going to affect plans for nuclear power worldwide.

That's the other thing about this, if Karzai is indeed just trying to stir things up to keep us there. The middle east is very fragile right now. It could blow up and cause us to send those troops elsewhere.

Stirring up shit only works to keep us there if:

A) We don't need the military elsewhere (unknown)
B) Politicians don't bow to souring public opinion (doubtful)
C) The unrest doesn't make staying impossible (questionable)

It's not like you can just sign up and say, "I'd rather not work, give me 60K in unemployment annually instead."

Or, perhaps I'm mistaken, and I've been struggling to pay the bills all these years for no particular reason.

From Boehner's wiki biography:

Boehner was born in Reading, Ohio, the son of Mary Anne and Earl Henry Boehner, the second of twelve children in a family of German and Irish descent. He grew up in modest circumstances, having shared one bathroom with his eleven siblings in a two-bedroom house in Cincinnati. His parents slept on a pull-out couch. He started working at his family's bar at age 8, a business founded by their grandfather Andy Boehner in 1938. [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

Every kid could go to work in their grandfather's bar. Unless they're just lazy.

Another response to the Afghan riots. Mark Steyn pounds Lindsey Graham for his mealy-mouthed response to the riots (Graham wanted to "hold [Terry Jones] responsible"):

In the absence of cultural confidence overseas, we are expending blood and treasure building an Afghanistan fit only for pederasts, tribal heroin cartels, and the blood-soaked savages of Mazar e-Sharif. In the absence of cultural confidence at home, we are sending the message that the bedrock principles of free, pluralist societies will bend and crumble in a vain race to keep up with the ever touchier sensitivities of the perpetually aggrieved. Claire Berlinski has it right: The real “racists” here are not this no-name pastor and his minimal flock but Reid, Graham, and the Times — for they assume that a significant proportion of Muslims are not responsible human beings but animals no more capable of rational behavior than the tiger who mauled Siegfried’s Roy. If that is true, certain consequences follow therefrom. The abandonment of the First Amendment is not one of them.

In Trafalgar Square, there is a statue of General Napier. I would urge any visitors to London to see it before it’s taken down, as it surely will be one day soon. Imagine what our world would look like if it were Lindsey Graham up on that plinth. A society led by such “men” cannot survive, and does not deserve to.

No degree, little experience pay off big

Just in his mid-20s, Brian Deschane has no college degree, very little management experience and two drunken-driving convictions.

Yet he has landed an $81,500-per-year job in Gov. Scott Walker's administration overseeing environmental and regulatory matters and dozens of employees at the Department of Commerce. Even though Walker says the state is broke and public employees are overpaid, Deschane already has earned a promotion and a 26% pay raise in just two months with the state.

How did Deschane score his plum assignment with the Walker team?

It's all in the family.

His father is Jerry Deschane, executive vice president and longtime lobbyist for the Madison-based Wisconsin Builders Association, which bet big on Walker during last year's governor's race...

Quite Concur. Even in times of grave emergency, nepotism will rear its head.

Then again, as an Atheist, maybe I just don't "get it"...

After Maine’s governor removes labor mural, feds demand their money back

Whoops: The governor of Maine's decision to remove a pro-labor mural from the state's Department of Labor may cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars, all because he wanted to "send a message."

Apparently unknown to Maine's recently elected Republican governor, the mural targeted by his ire was initially paid for by a federal grant -- the terms of which he violated by having it removed.

And now, according to the Associated Press, the U.S. Department of Labor has officially demanded reimbursement.

The grant, awarded in 2008 to pay for the 37-foot-long mural, fulfilled 63 percent of the $60,000 historical art project...

This is what i'm all about: [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

Luis Suarez-Villa, in his 2009 book Technocapitalism: A Critical Perspective on Technological Innovation and Corporatism argues that it is a new version of capitalism that generates new forms of corporate organization designed to exploit intangibles such as creativity and new knowledge. The new organizations, which he refers to as experimentalist organizations are deeply grounded in technological research, as opposed to manufacturing and services production, and in the appropriation of research outcomes as intellectual property. Under technocapitalism, creativity and new knowledge become the most valuable resources,

Not true..In the old days of overclocking you risked many errors in register transfers from the heat.. software often became unstable.. Of course everybody did it anyway for the thrill of a couple extra ticks for gaming

And, you didn't?

I think most people understand ethics and morality whether they believe in God or not. And it's not hard to spot those who justify their bad behavior by using religion.

Yep... LGF pages are littered with such examples... Sobering thought indeed.

I put all my overclocks through the wringer. There is lots of software designed specifically to test the stability of an overclock. If they reveal problems, or general stability is bad, I lower my overclock - or rather I incrementally move up to that point and back off.

I regularly get decent overclocks that are rock stable. Processors get binned into clock groups partly by their capabilities, and partly due to market considerations.

overclocking is the computer equivalent of forcing your computer to run faster than it was intended. Like a car, You redline it a while, heat kills, stuff breaks

registers are just memory, memory gets corrupted because the computer is running too fast, programs crash.

A beefy air cooler is enough for basic overclocking, though water is nice for other reasons or pushing some processors to the limit.

I would use OCCT and linpack through an interface like LinX. There are lots of other bits of software and various tips - many of them can be found in the forum at the LinX link, they are dedicated specifically to overclocking.

actually, if you develop commercial software, you want to work on a slowish computer so that you will experience all the pain that your user will feel if you write a slow routine

Maybe I have a different vision of God, but God doesn't make people do something or not make people do something else. Humans have free will to choose what they want to do or not do. It's not a faulty word of God. It's just a faulty interpretation.

At least that's my story and I'm stickin to it :)

re: #16 freetoken

It's not clear to me what real options we had, that were viable. Or that we have now, that are viable as far as seeing that Afghanistan becomes a country that works on the international stage the way we expect nations to work.

Quite honestly, once the Taliban government took the position of harboring the terrorists who planned 9-11, we would have been quite justified in taking the place over and telling them it's "our way or the highway" i.e. unconditional surrender, and then installing a democratic government when we were good and ready. I certainly think that while Bin Laden and remaining Taliban are still out and running around is too soon for it.

You're supposed to WIN a war before declaring victory and installing a new government. If you're not willing to do that, you shouldn't go to war with that objective in the first place.
