Went to the theater to see RED. Not a bad escape. I'm not quite there yet, but when I start dating 65 year-olds, I hope they look like Helen Mirren. And if they can handle automatic weapons the way she does, well that's a bonus.

I've never played the fallout games before. I like this one, they do a nice job with the open world concept and you can do whatever you want. I don't mind the less than stellar graphics, the story is nice but it is buggy and a little crashy.

In FO1 & 2, you could kill just about anyone you wanted, and it wouldn't break the main story/quest. Sure, you could screw yourself out of options and other side quests, and even suffer consequences (posses, bounty hunters, and the like), but it was nearly impossible to break the main story/quest.
The fuckers who designed those first two Fallouts were gawt-damned RPG designing geniuses.

In FO1 & 2, you could kill just about anyone you wanted, and it wouldn't break the main story/quest. Sure, you could screw yourself out of options and other side quests, and even suffer consequences (posses, bounty hunters, and the like), but it was nearly impossible to break the main story/quest.
The fuckers who designed those first two Fallouts were gawt-damned RPG designing geniuses.
Same guys who did New Vegas! Feargus Urquart, Chris Avellone, etc

Avellone was the guy behind Torment! I have a lot of confidence in him! And I loved Fallout 2, but when Fallout 2 was originally released it was brooooken, there were so many bugs that my giant-brained friends with infinite patience for RPGs gave up on it until it was massively patched.
Also, Boyarsky was heavily involved in Bloodlines (Oh wiki I love you so) which had all kinds of problems. Still a great game! But a great game with many flaws. Many of them because (I think) they were wrestling with the new age of complex 3d FPS interfaces for RPGs, using Source for the project, and that takes resources away from pure design.
I haven't played New Vegas yet, but I did play F3 through twice, and I considered it the best RPG experience I've had since Torment came out. If not the best. The other is Uplink, which barely qualifies, it's a one-man indie game. I think the world of gaming has changed too much for a game that resembles the original Fallouts to really work for a mainstream market, too much money at stake, games have gotten to be too large, need far too much middleware with a big learning curve for the developers, and need to appeal to too many people for a game that really demands you roll your own RP experience in the way the original Fallout demanded. Games like that still exist in some respect, but they're all little indies like Spiderweb trying to make their own way.

I think some of it is more that publishers simply held all the cards (much more so than now) and they had no choice, more so than just reckless development. Milestone payments were just how everyone did business. They shouldn't have gone with Sierra, but a lot of publishers behave the same way, and every AAA developer without truely massive clout gets locked into those contracts. And then RPGs themselves are not a very predictabe dev cycle, and there you have it.
But Troika and Obsidan also don't have engineering chops the way some other devs do, so that hurts them in the dev cycle.
ToEE was, oh god it just wasn't remotely done. I don't know what happened there.

iirc,, Alaska rules on "write in" votes states something in the order that the name (written is) has to be spelled exactly.
SPECULATION ,, "a" ballot counter could accept a Murkowski vote if spelled wrong (if that counter was sympathetic to her) OR "a" counter could disqualify a ballot if the voters handwriting was bad (making it appear it was spelled wrong)

The gunnrunners bridge on fallout 1 stopped you from progressing. Tons of places in Fallout 2 would crash when you entered them, forcing you to reload from a previous save. If you got too many items in Fallout 2, it'd lock up.
Again-- I love those old games. But I don't romantacize them.

Actually, what they're arguing is that the Supreme Court of the US has previously ruled that the state legislature should get to decide on the rules of interpretation, not the election officials. I have no idea of the validity of this claim.

My mom and dad eat the same diet. My dad struggles with his cholesterol, has to exercise a lot to deal with it. Struggles with his weight as well. He eats proportionally slightly more than my mom, but he's a much bigger person than her.
My mom has bad cholesterol so low that it's undetectable, and extremely high good cholesterol.

My fever broke last night. It got pretty intense. I had a strange fever dream that someone was blackmailing my wife and I was trying to stop it without learning what the secret was. When I woke up I was just getting ready to kill the blackmailer.
When I was a kid, I had a fever dream that Marcus Aurelius and Julius Caeser came to my bedside and taught me Latin. And I swear, I seriously became much better at Latin after that. Apparently, fevers can actually be good for cognitive function so this isn't all that strange.

Fever dreams can be really bizzare. One I can remember is I was being chased by some sort of monster. Went on and on and on. I finally got to some house and struggled to shut the door. However just as I finally pulled it shut the monster bit my hand off. Then I woke up and couldn't feel my hand. So I freaked and started screaming and crying which brought everyone running.
Ended up the besides the fever I had been lying on my hand and it was completely asleep.

Germans mark November 11th in entirely different ways.
Needless to say, they do not make much of a big deal about the end of WWI, although nearly every town or village has a memorial to the dead from the war, most of which have had the dead from WWII amended later.
But November 11th is Martinmas, and it is the tradition for the children to hold a lantern-lit procession, often led by someone on horseback dressed as a legionnaire (St. Martin was a roman soldier who is said to have cut his cloak in half to share with a poor, freezing beggar) and often of to a bonfire outside of town.
Then off to a dinner of roast goose.
And for those who are big into celebrating Karneval (Mardi Gras), the 11th of the 11th marks the start of the "fifth season" of parties and celebrations.

Activity level is definitely better for health. In terms of body fat and stuff like that, it is perfectly possible for someone with twenty extra pounds of lard to be in better shape than someone who has no fat, but no muscle too. Extra fat doesn't necessarily deprive cardiac function.

Yep. Along with all the munitions that keep surfacing in the farmer's fields in France. The United States has essentially been blessed in not having fought any sort of extended land war on its territory in 150 years. (Yes, there are exceptions such as Hawaii, a few islands in Alaska, etc., but nothing like the Somme mind you where a few years of trench warfare were fought in the French equivalent of Virginia or Pennsylvania.)
Partially a geographical blessing by being the sole major power on a continent, and partially I believe from having a fairly forward looking foreign policy that generally resulted in fighting our wars on someone else's land. The English have sort of gotten the same deal, which makes me think that such policy is a default approach for maritime-oriented trading nations.

I can understand nitpicking if there are several candidates with similar names on the write-in ballot,. But the key guideline here is "intent" and I think that must be clear: how many Murkowskis could they be talking about?
Anything else is just obfustication and obstruction of the electoral process, and Alaska and the nation is doing itself a disservice by allowing that in any form.

I understand the statute in needing the proper candidate properly identified on the write-in ballot. This quickly turns into one of those cases where it's a balancing act between allowing the citizen to make a choice that will be counted, and ensuring that the choice is not abused by unscrupulous forces. And, essentially, you want to avoid election officials making judgment calls as much as possible to avoid charges of favoritism and corruption.

That's simply politics as usual. Winning above principles, and anything is fair game if it's legal. (And often it shades over into illegal if the analysis has indicated that the punishment will be late, or minimal compared to affecting the result.)
My default assumption at this point regarding politicians is that they are slime. They have to work their way up from that point via principled actions for me to grant them greater respect than that. My default assumption for any person I happen to meet on the street starts much higher than that.

Just a point of view-Winners of a elections whose results fall well into the actual error range are likely a random result. This nail biting over tenths of a percent is foolish. May as well flip a coin. When it's that close both sides failed to really prevail.
I had a long chat with a stats pro guy about it. It looks to me like the 95% confidence would put the error range at plus or minus about 2%. Personally, I'm not at all convinced hand counts reduce that, especially with a messed up ballot, messed up cards or as we see a write in.
2000 showed all of this.

The law says nothing about intent - it says that the name as it appears on the candidacy declaration or the last name. So, while one can argue that intent should matter, the law says something different.
Parsing that statute requires that 1) the oval be filled in; and
2a) the name as it appears on the write-in declaration; or 2b) the last name of the candidate is written in the space provided.
Lisa M. would not be sufficient by the terms of that statute. Intent is not sufficient to overcome the plain meaning of the statute.
Putting down Murkowski is sufficient. L. Murkowski is sufficient. Lisa Murkowski is sufficient. Lisa M. is not.
That isn't to say that Murkowski's lawyers wont try to claim that a ballot cast for Lisa M (if it meets the requirement (1) above was a vote for Murkowski, but Miller's lawyers would point to the plain language of the statute and note that voter's intent is excluded from the counting of the ballot.

I couldn't really watch very much of Glenn Beck's ballyhooed "expose" of George Soros on his show last night, and I don't really know whether this sort of thing should be taken seriously or simply dismissed and ignored. (No, I'm not linking to it.) But as one who doesn't watch Beck, I have to say that I was flabbergasted at his techniques.

It really is shocking that something like this could be on American "news" television. I mean, not much is shocking these days, but this is just rancid propaganda, delivered (almost) openly as propaganda, with just enough of a patina of "information," a structure and rhythm similar enough to that of a standard news-magazine show, that it can just barely pass as one to those who want to believe it.

Rubio as always kind of a joke to me. He promised, for example, that he would make sure all discretionary funding had a ten year sunset rule.
All discretionary funding has to be approved yearly. That's what discretionary means.
He always refused to name any actual cuts he'd made in order to balance the budget.
He has promised to extend the Bush tax cuts and give corporate tax cuts and other stuff that would create an even larger deficit. Doesn't have any way to actually pay for this, of course.
But those who voted for him just heard 'cut taxes, cut spending', and ignored that he had no actual plan for cutting spending, and that cutting taxes without cutting spending is the most fiscally irresponsible move that you can make.
His voters are getting exactly what they voted for. They may not be happy with it. But it's what they chose.

There is no law requiring Comcast to have Spanish available -- it's done purely for business reasons. If you run a business in areas with large numbers of non-English speaking customers and can't communicate with them you're going to lose a lot of business.

Rep.-elect Allen West (R-FL), who built his conservative political career on the torture-related incident that ended his tenure in the military, has gone back to his conservative base with a key staff hire.
As the Palm Beach Post reports, West has tapped local talk-radio host Joyce Kaufman, who has made a name for herself through her fiery denunciations of illegal immigration, to be his new Chief of Staff:
A proud Puerto Rican Jew, Kaufman became a de facto spokeswoman for South Florida's anti-illegal immigration movement in 2007. She hit a raw nerve with her mostly white, mostly older WFTL audience, and watched her ratings shoot up, when she broadcast that she quit buying cable TV from Comcast after the company's answering system asked her to "Press 1 for English."
She's had a few on-air doozies since, including when she demanded that illegal aliens be hung on the central square! That got her some heat from the Federal Communications Commission.

The first album I can remember listening to was "Rock and Roll Music" by The Beatles. Funnily enough, "Bad Boy" was on the sound system at the store last night, and I impressed* my companions by knowing the words. Probably hadn't heard that song in 20 years at least.

My impression was always of the debate kid who was purely interested in the technical aspect of debating and had no clue about the issues being discussed. For those guys it's just about scoring points with rhetoric.

Via the local Crowley Political Report site, here is a fascinating video of Kaufman speaking at a 4th of July Tea Party event this past summer:
At about the 5:00 mark, Kaufman read from the Declaration of Independence: "That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness."
She then continued...
The Founding Fathers were brilliant. They gave us two methods with which to do it. They gave us ballots -- and that's a first line of defense. We go out there, and we change them, we send home all of these incumbents who have done nothing to represent the people.
