BTW....are there any LNDT lizards who consider themselves an expert on the various unions? My limited experience with them has been fairly negative (picking fights with management at the worst possible time, walking away even when management offers most of what's being asked, possible sabotage, heated class warfare rhetoric....and Hoffa Jr. hanging out with the Krazy Kos Kidz doesn't help matters much, either).

I'd like to think that not all unions are shiftless bloodsuckers who have cast their lot with shrill America-hating leftists (Fraternal Order of Police or International Association of Firefighters, maybe?) and do their part to help safegaurd wages and benefits for American workers...but between the UAW and this full court press for Card Check, it's difficult for me to shed my negative and preconcieved notions.

Also, whenever I usually give somebody the benefit of the doubt, it usually comes back to bite me in the ass.

was about 10 minutes later...it took sheet metal about 4 hours to show up.

The absurd work rules (something on the order of 2,000 pages) are one of the main things that drove GM into bankruptcy.

I had a similar experience as an electrician. Plumbers had pipe stacked against where we were supposed to start installing EMT for sub-feeds to apartment clusters. I started moving pipe and was told to stop and find a plumber.

Two days later...

IMHO unions have outlived their usefulness.

What they're expectations are lately seem kind of unreasonable to me.

My guess is reading may be near the radio area, or maybe a third place altogether, but in you listening to the book versus reading it, it's still better than video. It would be interesting though, to know the differences in all three. Earlier I linked a study that shows how television for babies can hurt their language development. I'm so glad I'm not beholden to that box anymore.

That's why I like working in the upstream end of the oilpatch. No unions in sight, or on the site. Refineries are unionized, but not the drilling end, nor any of the service companies, so far as I know. Right now, things are very slow, a double whammy of spring breakup plus low gas and crude prices. There is downward pressure on wages, and on the day rate that I get paid (from some clients, at least). So I work fewer days, and maybe get paid less per day. But I still have work. If I were in a union, chances are we'd all be out on strike for some damfool reason, or else the union would ensure that only the guys who kiss the union rep's butt would be getting work.

Y'know....the rail industry's made significant strides on ways to improve fuel efficency and lower emissions with their motive power for the last 10 years. Also consider that railways are the most fuel efficient way to haul bulk frieght (per ton-mile) and a typical boxcar can take 3-5 trucks off the road.

But watch the 0bama administration decide that that isn't good enough and butt in with CAFE-like standards for locomotives....which by the way, will kill short-haul, reigonal and switching railroads who traditionally rely on secondhand motive power.

When I read, I hear the narration and voices of the characters. I think that it may explain why auditory learning is similar to learning through reading. As far as the brain is concerned, the two may be much alike. What I think is most different is that when you read, you must focus more then when you are listening. When you are listening, your mind may wonder off on a thought and where a reader pauses his reading to think off topic, the listeners audio player keeps playing. Things can be easily missed in the audio that cannot be missed in the reading.

As for TV, I think it may be nearly useless as a learning tool. The images have a very strong emotional effect on the human mind. So much so that I wonder if it is of much use for conveying anything more then an emotional message. As a tool for shaping the way people feel about an issue, I think TV is extremely powerful. I just don't think it does much if anything to help people think more smartly.

And yes, it is good to be free of the controlling influence of the One-Eyed Living Room God.

I do agree with what they said about the disproportionate amount of coverage of the Tiller murder compared to the young men shot (one killed) at the recruiting center by the prison Muslim convert, but the rest of the slant is somewhere between WorldNutDaily and freeper territory, with a lot of whining. Lots and lots of whining. Their depth of denial about the connection between the extremist pro-lifers and violence is very disappointing.

Is there something wrong with nuke plants? They are the cleanest, most environmentally friendly source of energy, no matter how you calculate such things.

Burning coal will release far more radioactive material into the environment than a continent's worth of nuclear plants ever will, no matter how much 'scrubbing' you do.

What is it with people and mice? They're tiny little things. I remember I was "summoned" with the kind of screaming reserved for dead bodies all over the place and when I got there "she" was up on the table and the poor mouse was on the floor in perfect health but petrified at the sound of the screaming. Well, I'm not afraid of mice by any stretch. Unfortunately, they aren't very clean or tidy. I discovered a drawer in a dresser in the back room full of pieces of dog food Mr. Mouse had been hoarding. We bought RatZapper, which is extremely satisfying. However, the problem is getting the mice to actually venture in. This mouse in the back room is a sly devil, and has avoided it long enough to stash about a pound of dog food, piece by piece. I have no idea how long he's been back there, but it's been awhile.

I think cats are capable of killing more than one a day, but they know when they have a good thing at home. They space out the kills so you think they're necessary and on task. They figure one a day keeps a roof over their head. Cats aren't dumb.

Hey I LOVE Alaska. I could live there. I made a number of trips to see my late friend and fish with him and the gang out by Kodiak. It was an experience of a lifetime. My friend went to Alaska to help with reconstruction after the big earthquake of what was it about '62 and never found a good reason to come back home.

What is it with people and mice? They're tiny little things.

Back when I lived in NYC with my ex-husbandoid, we had mice in our Brooklyn apartment. I wouldn't have minded the mice at all, were it not for their habit of hanging out in the gas oven to enjoy the warmth of the pilot light -- pissing and shitting whenever Nature called. Which meant that whenever the oven was turned on, the dried puddles of mouse-piss would heat up and start to emit a stink straight from Satan's bowels.

The mouse-turds left elsewhere in the apartment didn't bother me -- after all, we had a terrier who shed huge tumbleweeds of dog hair year-round, and who sometimes liked to lift his leg on the left front end of the living-room sofa. And my ex was pretty much the gay version of Oscar Madison. So compared with the mess generated by the two of them, the mouse-turds on the kitchen floor were nothing.

But the damn mice hadda go and piss inside my oven, thereby producing the above-mentioned Smell From Hell. So eventually it came to me putting out glue traps and not giving a damn about how inhumane they are.

I sort of solved the deer problem at the pond by putting one of the horses out there.

The deer learned pretty quick "size matters". Plus, the horses don't like iris or willow trees, so the plants are safe. And horses really don't like sharing their space with deer. If I had the horse-chasing-deer on video, I probably could have sold the movie rights.

I fed a young bull moose a carrot out of my hand, right in front of my front door a couple of winters ago. He was tame and courteous, much like a horse. Big soft fuzzy rubbery lips. There's a lot of moose wandering around Anchorage, summer and winter.

Saw a couple of black bears the other day, about 15 minutes by highway from downtown. It's the grizzlies in town that are starting to be a bother.

Jihad syndrome, very probably. But I don't believe the "sudden" part. Considering the amount of extremist indoctrination that seems to be part-and-parcel of Islamic proselytization in prison ministries (witness the quartet in NYC), I'd say those "converting" these gentlemen are spending a considerable amount of time teaching them to become "holy warriors".

It only looks "sudden" because they are also learning to conceal their actions and objectives until they are ready to execute an attack, which is simply OPSEC. What this tells me is that whoever is teaching them is pretty familiar with the way guerrillas operate. (Or has simply read the old Anarchist's Cookbook.)

In many ways, the behavior of these "jihadists" parallels that of the extreme elements of the left-wing radical movement of the 1960s and 1970s; small groups or individuals engaging in independent "acts of resistance" against what they see as an "evil" society. Ours.

The distinction between society and government is an important one. In each case, if the government were the problem, the violence and opposition should have ceased when a new government was installed (Carter in 1977, Obama in 2009). In each case, it didn't; in fact, in the case of Islamic terrorism, it accelerated throughout Carter's term in office, and now seems to be doing the same thing. It's our society the extremists are opposed to, and seek to destroy; now as then, our freshly-minted leaders do not seem to grasp this.

They believe that if they "give them (the extremists) what they want, all will be well." They do not understand that what the extremists want- is for us to cease to exist.

I resist saying that The One, or Carter, also wish this; both are too power-hungry to want everything erased, as then they would have no one to lord it over. Wanting our society sufficiently damaged and crippled to facilitate their Triumph is something else again.

They believe that their dream world, and that of the extremists, are compatible. They fail to understand that the extremists dream of a world in which no one else exists.

Spokesman Robert Gibbs, keeping the White House press corps in stiches, as he always does, said the Obamas would have preferred using a commercial airline shuttle to New York and back, but the Secret Service would not allow such unprotected travel (ba da bing).

And that was that. No further probing; asked and answered; time to move on.

Remember though, when Obama lectured CEO's about using private jets?

There was, of course, an ironic element of the trip. In February, Obama scolded corporate executives (while also costing Las Vegas some $130 million) when he said: "You can't get corporate jets. You can't go take a trip to Las Vegas, or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayers' dime."

So how much did the outing cost you and me?

One early estimate (from the New York Post) put the cost at $24,000. Absurdly low. The Daily Mail in London threw out another number — $75,000. Sure, three times as much as the first estimate, but still probably spectacularly low. Remember, joyriding Air Force One around for a few hours over Manhattan a couple months ago cost $250,000, so the cost of the weekend trip was likely not likely that low.

Upshot is, the White House Press Corps loves it when Obama beats up on private sector individuals from his bully pulpit, but does not hold The Messiah to the same standards.

This series will consist of 2,371 medals (a number based on a calculation of the number of ways each citizen can worship The One in their heart), and each will include a portion of one of The One's speeches. The medallions will arrive in citizens' mailboxes beginning Monday, under the National Subscription plan which all citizens are required to belong to, along with the notification that the purchase price has already automatically been deducted from their paychecks. All medallions will of course be accompanied by leaflets (printed on recycled paper) of the speeches, for citizens' school-age children to use in class during the daily Appreciation of The One class in every school. The metal the medallions are made of, of course, comes from recycled motor vehicles, as per The One's Five Year Plan to abolish the evil motor vehicle from reality.

2. Chrysler Collective Industries (a fully-owned subsidiary of UAW), no longer makes such evil devices. This year, they will lead the world in production of ecologically-benign, culturally-correct, vital products such as rickshaws and aromatherapy candles.

In closing, The One stated that "Next year will be even better, as we make the world right at last."

Still reviewing how the Monday killings (following on the heels of the Sunday Tiller killing) are playing out on the various websites that try to be "conservative" but not freeper/vdare/WND category.

It is not looking good.
