The cards were just falling my way. (Especially when I went all in on the opening flop with only 4/5ths of a straight and got the final part on the very next card)

When we closed on our house, the Mrs. Fish and I split a bottle of wine that I had been given as a wedding present. It's the only alcohol I've ever had. It was actually not a very friendly drink for someone who has never drank before.

Less evil, more stupid. Though it is important to remember that evil and stupidity are two different states of the same thing. Sort of like ice and steam being two different states of H2O. At certain concentrations, evil and stupidity are interchangeable with no measurable difference in outcome.

I was there about ten years ago...was driving back to the airport from a meeting, saw "St James Gate" and immediately parked the car. I walked into the brewery and shouted to the tour-guides, tourists, and other random bystanders, "Mom! I'M HOME!" They sent me across the street for the nearest pint...I had four before driving to the airport and having three more to celebrate before flying home. (I had a car service to pick me up in London then so there were no concerns once I turned in the rental car.)

Antarctica’s about to lose a New York City-sized chunk
"Such an acceleration is of particular concern at the Pine Island Glacier, because, among Antarctic glaciers, it's "the one that's contributing the most to sea level rise."
In fact, [glaciologist Ted Scambos] said, ice flows from that glacier alone account for a quarter to a third of Antarctica's total contribution to sea level rise.
"It's moving at about three kilometers [almost two miles] per year," Scambos said. And, he noted, "it's been accelerating quite a bit."

Jewelry is tough. Retail has legs if you have good work & online savvy but the manufacturing side is pretty grim. I was looking at BLS stats yesterday and it's not pretty.
We already lost 1/3rd of jewelry mfg employment since the 1990's. BLS projects another 33% loss in jewelry mfg employment by 2020. It's like steel or textiles/clothes. Gone offshore. In 2020 2/3rds less people will be in the manufacturing side compared to 1995. Figure in population growth and it's uglier.
My perspective & interest is that of a 4th generation guy in the biz.

At least GIA did keep it's standards high. And a GIA lab cert on a stone is still the most respected report there is by far. Their books are the best definitive works. IMO-But a GG was never necessary for making jewelry or working at a store. Buying stones is where you need it.

Well, Newt Gingrich finally went and made my shit list, with the following piece of bullshit:
Gingrich hammered the class-based themes again and again.
He attacked out-of-touch news media "elites" who reside in Manhattan high rises and "ride the subway" (perhaps unaware of who rides public transportation in New York City).
At one point, he even compared Romney to President Barack Obama, whom he has routinely described as a "food stamp president."
Like Obama, he claimed, Romney wants Americans to live off food stamps instead of paychecks.
"Obama is big food stamp, he is little food stamp," Gingrich said of Romney. "But they both think food stamps are okay."
I'd point out that neither Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney "think food stamps are okay", but rather they both see food stamps as a something that some families may sometimes need to survive and that thus it is societally and morally better therefore for food stamps to exist.
But of course such words would be wasted on a egomaniacal blowhard like Newt. As a consequence of this lie/dogwhistle Newt Gingrich just produced, he joins the list of candidate I will not vote for, period. If Newt Gingrich wins the Republican nomination, I will vote for Barack Obama.

Ah, well, the alcoholic gulf war vet across the street got his ass arrested again. The way the officer was shouting commands, it sounds like he was acting even stupider than usual. No big noises thankfully. He was probably a boarderline/functional alcoholic before combat and is pretty much a PTSD poster child afterwards. I keep hoping he'll get help but I doubt it. Really he's turning into one of those you simply pray doesn't take any with him when it's all said and done...

This is the city Al-Assad is destroying.
It looks like a beautiful city. And it's population is over 1 million. This could make Hama in the 80's look tiny.
I hate saying this, but we have the Western Nations and the Arab League agreeing. I think an attack on Al-Assad must occur. Preferably by someone's Special Ops. Doesn't need to be us.
In fact, I would advocate the use of Norway's. They are seen positively in the Arab and Muslim World, and there would not be as much suspicion of the Norwegians doing it. Their Special Forces are Top-Notch as well. In addition, they are close allies with Turkey, so getting there would not be an issue.

I'm going to say that a Norwegian Spec Ops attack like what happened to Bin Laden is needed. Of course, we would have to transfer munitions to Norway, as they drained nearly everything they had (Aircraft Wise) on Libya.
Norway did 10% of all the airstrikes in Libya. They did a way-outsized contribution to that war. Just as they resisted disproportionately compared to their size in WWII.

Me too. It's the hate that finally turned me against Newt. I first saw that 'big and little food stamp' malarkey on the CNN crawl at Wendy's earlier today. Right before it was a Rick Santorum quote that (as I remember it) was Santorum saying he wanted the GOP to reach out to "100% of America". The subtext of the two ads could not have been more different:
Santorum subtext: "I will engage people with whom I do not agree. I may not change my mind, but I will listen. I do not seek a narrow, regional Republican Party."
Gingrich subtext: "Obama supports letting people mooch idlely off of the public teat, and because he supports a 'safety net' Romney is just Obama 'lite'. Sons of the South, vote for me!"
Whatever you think of Rick Santorum, his remarks were honest, decent spirited and based on the GOP's actual needs. Newt Gingrich's remarks were dishonest, mean spirited, and based only on his own needs.

The Gaspers are saying that the workforce has dropped by 1.7 million since 2/09 and surmises that they are all on welfare and not looking for work. I suppose the term "baby boomer" is beyond their ken.
Figured out what the 1.7m bit is about. Apparently the BLS numbers released today are the first to take into account adjustments by the Census Bureau, which caused a statistical spike in the number of people who've dropped out. Of course, like most "outrages," it's easily explained away as the Census discovering a lot of folks who either aren't officially listed or were assumed to have died by the government.
But that hasn't stopped the wingnuts from insisting that it's "proof" that the unemployment rate is a sham, that the number of folks looking for a job crashed, and that Obama's cooking the books for his reelection.

A letter to the editor from Indianapolis, just because:
Evolution can’t be proven and tested, either
In defense of state Sen. Dennis Kruse [who pushed the recent Indiana Senate bill introducing creationism into schools], he does understand how science works. Bill Sullivan’s (Letters, Jan. 31) statement that the bedrock principle of the scientific method is the generation of a testable hypothesis, which creation stories cannot provide, applies equally to the theory of evolution. The theory of macroevolution where one organism can morph into an entirely different one has not been shown even once let alone duplicated in monitored experiments. Show me how a catfish is turned into a cat.
They rely on the untestable assumptions that long periods of time and chance are needed. Chance is a mathematical probability, which has no means of retaining, and analyzing information needed to prefect a complex organism. Only a superior intelligence is capable of designing a living cell that can reproduce itself, check for and correct mistakes in that reproduction process.
The Big Bang and evolutionary theories both have a lot of untested hypotheses. If they were thoroughly tested, they would be laws and not theories. The fact is that neither creationism nor evolution can be tested because they are interpretations of past historical events, and an unobserved historical event cannot be repeatedly tested.

I don't see the issue with doing both.
The issue is that Assad has so much security that any ground based attack on him would need a full-on US Army Ranger battalion to have a good shot at succeeding. We have to severely disrupt his guard force before we can attack him directly on the ground. The good news on that front is that Syria's Republican Guard division tat protects Assad has T-72 battalions. We might start by siccing our A-10 Warthogs on those tanks. Seeing their armor blow up like bombs should crater the divisional infantry's morale.

CEP (Circular Error Probability) is too large in that scenario, we'd have stray bombs falling on civilian areas doing that (and quite possibly killing the Free Syrian Army men we'd want to support). Better to send B-1s, armed with smart bombs that offer far better hit probabilities.

Honestly think we should just shit-can the F-35 and put the Gripen on a short list of aircraft to choose a replacement for the F-16 fleet from.
The United States choose a foreign fighter design to replace the F-16? The right wing and defense industry freak-out would go on for years.

They cam fly escort, and in such a role they'd turn any MiGs that dared to take off into falling debris. In that scenario, you'd send the F-22s in with no warning, to allow them to get some kills and earn their keep.

Fuck'em. Lockheed and Boeing have grown fat and complacent on guaranteed government contracts. Time to introduce some lean and mean competition, even if it means sourcing it from foreign companies.

CEP (Circular Error Probability) is too large in that scenario, we'd have stray bombs falling on civilian areas doing that (and quite possibly killing the Free Syrian Army men we'd want to support). Better to send B-1s, armed with smart bombs that offer far better hit probabilities.
You have a point, but in Gulf 1, the contrails of the B-52's were often enough to cause surrenders by Iraqi forces. Especially on sortie 2+ ... The psychological reasons are often more powerful than the actual bombs.

How much are JDAM kits down to now due to economics of scale? And I believe they have kits for 500 lb (250 kg) bombs at this point as well. Don't need as big a bomb since the precision is so good.
And I think B-52s can haul load-outs of them now. Though you need better suppression of SAM and such to use them instead of the B-1s.

That could be mitigated, but Saab would have to agree to let a US firm build the aircraft under license. Grippens built in Sweden would not be seen as acceptable, but Grippens build by Lockheed-Martin might be a different story.

Nah. There's no way the generals would allow any F-22 into someplace like Syria. Too expensive. They're saving those for air defense and in case of any real military action on US soil or our European allies. It will likely retire without having seen much action.

The B-1 was almost cancelled and scraped. Most are pretty old at this point. So maybe in 20 years we'll be seeing remaining F-22s being deployed for grass fires. B-2s are less vulnerable at high altitudes. Any likely scenario would involve NATO aircraft which could include Grippens, F-15s, F-16s, and F-18s. Unlikely that Germany would want to get involved. Then there's that one big sticking point much like Iran and it's called Russia.

EU SAYS GAS SUPPLIES DOWN DESPITE GAZPROM CLAIMS
The EU executive said Friday that Russian gas deliveries have fallen in nine countries, with Gazprom invoking flexibility clauses as it also braves a cold snap.
The European Commission was highlighting the drop a day after Russian state gas giant Gazprom said it had increased volumes exported to European Union neighbours amid a sudden drop in temperatures.
With more than 220 lives lost as these temperatures reached new lows, the European Commission said Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania and Slovakia had each registered drops in gas supplies.
A spokeswoman for EU energy commissioner Guenther Oettinger, Marlene Holzer said that "our member states have been informed by the Russian authorities that there is exceptional cold weather, and that Russia needs more gas (for its own use) than normal."
She added, however, that Gazprom contractual small print with European buyers "allows for a certain flexibility."
Austria, for instance, had logged a 30 percent fall and Italy had seen deliveries fall by 24 percent, though she noted that stocks were not at an "emergency" level in any of the nine.
Italy's gas network Snam Rete Gas later said imports from Russia through the Tarvisio hub were down 28.9 percent on Friday, a sharper fall than on Thursday.

Yes. Natural gas resources are not uncommon anywhere there are carbon bearing sedimentary deposits from the Permian/Mesozoic up through the Paleogene. That's why there is currently a natural gas boom - the simple hydrocarbons are more plentiful than the longer (and higher energy density) hydrocarbons that make up petroleum.
Algeria, though, has been more of a market source than Libya, I believe.

Europe meets rising gas demand during cold spell
"At this time last year, storage was nowhere near as high and we had seen several weeks of sub-zero temperatures," one gas trader said.
Europe's gas storage sites were two-thirds full on average versus levels of less than 50 percent at this point last year, data from Gas Infrastructure Europe showed on Tuesday.

Let's go back to the starving children begging on the corners model. "The Little Match Girl" was nearly a non-fiction piece, people.
Nearly? In England,(edit ah, Denmark, HC Anderson) where it was written, it was basically nonfiction.

The trick in Syria is how to make the endgame more like Libya and less like Egypt. Anything will be difficult because the NeoSovs, China and Iran have Assad's back.
BTW, Russia could give a fuck what anyone thinks. It's money to them. Assad is a paying customer. But while they are on the UN Security Council they aren't in NATO.
And the other trick is how to get Turkey involved. Turkey turned down some offered gifts from the Bush administration, wanting nothing to do with the inevitable and messy Iraqi endgame. Perhaps the Arab League, NATO and Obama can work some magic. You'd need the Turkish military to stand down the Syrian army.
Difficulty level: 9.

Ah, the racist dog-whistle...but Romney said he doesn't give a rat's ass about poor people. Gingrich is barking up the wrong tree on this one.
That's not what Romney said, though. He did say "poor people have a safety net to help them out, and if it gets holes it it I'll work to fix them". Newt Gingrich attacked Mitt Romney solely for supporting the existence of functional societal safety net programs. Newt's policy seems to be: "All those who accept food stamps do so because they prefer food stamps to working for a living. Anyone who disagrees with my view is an Un-American Socialist!" His words were ugly, dishonest and delivered with malice aforethought (this applies to both his words for Romney and his words for Obama, to be clear).

Don't worry, the Europeans could always just cut down the remaining forests and burn them:
Greeks 'fell trees for warmth' amid economic chill
Rising oil prices and chilly economic times are prompting increasing numbers of Greeks to chop down trees for winter warmth, a group of forest engineers warned Tuesday.
Nikos Bokaris, a spokesman for the Panhellenic Union of Forest Engineers, said the debt-wracked nation's forest ecosystems were not yet under threat, but urged the government to act quickly to prevent broader damage.
"You have to remember what happened in Albania," Bokaris said, describing how that country's population felled trees en masse after the collapse of communism. "Even the trees lining the roads were chopped down."
Greek foresters filed 1,500 criminal complaints last year, twice as many as in 2010. About 70 percent of Greece's forests are public, with most of the rest belonging to various religious institutions.
Bokaris attributed the rise to a sharp drop in national funding for forest management, coupled with a near-doubling of oil prices in 2011.

This is true. But Putin notwithstanding one of the best routes to peace is trade. And international trade. One must consider the idea of energy isolationism and its effects. There will be nations that are always dependent on other natural resources by the very nature of geography and geology. It doesn't have to be a bad thing.

I don't think Iraq presents a supply route problem for Iran now. Maybe a couple of years ago but it's a sieve, especially for the Shiites.
WIth the exception of Egypt, Obama is doing very well in the foreign policy department.
Obama has to get NATO and Turkey lined up. After than Assad is toast, and a united Obama/NATO/Turkey are big enough to tell the NeoSovs/China to buzz off. Iran will fold.

Not true, it's smoothbore sporting shotgun for which commercial ammunition is available, just like the 12 gauge which is also greater than 1/2 inch. This is a standard exception to the DD classification. The reason the TOZ-123 isn't available anymore is because arms manufactured in the Russian Federation and other former former Soviet countries were severely restricted in 1996.

It's hard to imagine right now, but a few weeks of that normal routine will help. It takes the edge off the pain and, in my case, allowed me to relax in ways I couldn't otherwise.
Find little rituals you can do - I light a candle every time I go to church because that was something my mother deeply believed in - that will help as well as it gives you a focus point for the pain that keeps it out of your heart.
On Sunday, go to that club you've talked of (Moose? Elk? Something like that) and be there with friends. They will get you past that day and throughout the regular days which will, really, be much harder.
I still have my father, but it doesn't make the ache for my mother go away. Accept that ache as a given and it will help tremendously. It will always be there to a greater or lesser extent.
All we are doing; all we can do; is survive. That is at once harder and simpler than we ever expect before we find ourselves in that spot.

Last year's "atmospheric river" that brought record precip to parts of the Colorado river basin out here saved our butts... for about 3 years, from my quick look at the Lake Mead water level chart. Mead was down almost to the point where water outflow would have had to be cut off... but with the record precip the level boomed up to just above "drought" stage.
However, this year precip is back to normal (actually, a bit less than normal) and given that the annual consumption from Lake Mead outstrips inflow under "normal" conditions, the level is now back on its path downwards... in a few years it will be back in crisis level.

re: #342 Sergey Romanov
Still trying to beat that code?
I don't actually work directly with code, it's more an amalgam of a GUI and pseudo code. So, for most things I can work on, I can open and work on them in a visual editor that interprets an underlying XML sheet, or I can open the file as text directly to edit it.
There are a couple of weird idiosyncratic bits, one of them being a database that holds position data for all the pages in the project. If that gets screwed up, then the pages won't play the right audio/respond in the right way. I had thought I had screwed up that database by deleting and adding pages-- something which it doesn't handle that elegantly, and doesn't give proper error reports on when it is failing. So I spent hours and hours yesterday changing by hand the 9 digit X/Y coordinate data on that database to match existing assets.
Then I remembered I can just replace the database with the backup I produced at the beginning of the product.
Oy.

Like most rational people I was delighted to hear about the Georgia court's smackdown of the birther kooks, less so to hear that this madness not only still exists but is apparently continuing to spread.
My friend the security guard has made a job change that may provide some insight into this phenomenon. He left the big box store and went to work at a contract call center. This particular one handles marketing calls for a satellite TV service. He reports that it is a nest of birthers, truthers, and free-lance black helicopter bleevers; so much so in fact that any contrary (ie rational) view is considered weird and out of step. The agents spend the whole day pimping the service to callers who are often complete assholes. The agents are glib, hyper-active, loud, verbally aggressive, and none too bright on the average. The guard is a smoker. He reports that the agents will start bumming cigarettes midway through the pay period, even though their average pay is around $20 an hour. Last week, he gave away 14 smokes in one shift, about 4 bucks worth, and finally had to say no more. The agents think he is mean but he cannot subsidize the habit for people who make more than he does. Why are they out of money? In many cases there might just be a link with both their hyper-active verbosity and their fondness for conspiracy theories. He and his colleagues routinely find crack and powder cocaine residue in the rest rooms. They have also found baggies of marijuana in the toilet stalls and the hallways, apparently dropped by their owners as they rushed back to work. The agents leave for lunch and come back bleery-eyed and chattering a hundred miles an hour.

Indiana news:
State won't release toxicology lab results
Only prosecutors told what retesting of samples revealed
[Link: www.indystar.com...]
State toxicology officials know. Prosecutors know. But, apparently, the public may never be told the depths of drug testing problems at the troubled State Department of Toxicology.
The Indianapolis Star previously obtained from the Indiana University School of Medicine three separate reports from an independent lab that suggested sloppy work and unacceptable levels of testing errors at the state lab, which police and prosecutors use to evaluate evidence for criminal cases.
.....
The denial also appears to fly in the face of a recommendation that the state's new three-member toxicology advisory panel -- a group appointed by Gov. Mitch Daniels -- made to the governor in July."The results of the retesting . . . should be conveyed to the prosecutors, defense and public in understandable language," the panel wrote in its report to the governor. "In other words, the explanations made should explain the significance of the findings and what they mean in lay language."
Indianapolis defense attorney John Tompkins said he has a pretty good idea what the secrecy means -- in lay language.
"If the results were good," he said, "they would be telling us."

Well, a default judgement isn't worth much-- any appeal will vacate it. That's why the default judgement entered against the New Black Panther member that was dropped by the DOJ wasn't a big deal, even though the wingnuts frothed over it; they knew that the judgement would not stand an appeal.
Asking for the case to be decided on their merits was inevitable.

From Orly's summary of law and facts:
f. The majority opinion in Kim Ark was drafted by the associate justice Horace Gray, appointee of President Chester Arthur. It was rumored, that Gray's commission and subsequent decision in Kim Ark was done to sanitize Arthur's own lack of eligibility. William Arthur, Chester Arthur's father was an Irish citizen and there is no clear evidence, that he became a U.S. citizen prior to Chester Arthur's birth. Reportedly Chester Arthur burned his identification papers and his eligibility is covered in mystery. Chester Arthur is the only other U.S. President, whose eligibility is questioned. Just because Arthur burned his documents, does not give Obama green light to disrespect the court and the nation and show a contempt to the judiciary and refuse to produce any verifiable documents, any evidence of his natural born status.

The thing is, to me anyway, "white" isn't a race or an identity the way "black" is. White people didn't have their cultures decimated by slavery. I know, at least on my mom's side, exactly where my ancestor's emigrated from. I know to some extent where my father's family came from. Any knowledge that is lost is purely because the family didn't keep up on it.

Independent Militia that is still not under complete control of the government. This may act as a kick in the butt to continue with the rehabilitation of these fighters.

I just cleaned my mouse and I'm ready for a big day of scrolling!
It wouldn't scroll yesterday.
Actually, I have many bikes to work on, so I won't get to do that much scrolling today.
But at least my mouse is clean inside.

No particular artist, just in general. Seems like any female artist who comes on the radio ends up with some guy babbling for at least one verse of the song.
I first noticed that particular stunt with the "2nd" version of Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good". Ruined the context, flow, and style of a good song, and I'm not sure to what end since I don't think it's the sort of thing that increases sales.
Also the 1st song I deleted off of iTunes when I downloaded the CD onto it.

Three Chicago law schools published "Enron-style" post-graduate employment statistics that misrepresent their chances of getting a job, say students in three class actions.
The separate, but nearly identical complaints against DePaul University College of Law, John Marshall Law School, and the Illinois Institute of Technology aka Chicago-Kent College of Law, in Cook County Chancery Court, are part of a wave of such lawsuits filed this week all over the country.
Similar class actions were filed this week against Golden Gate University School of Law and the University of San Francisco School of Law (both in San Francisco Superior Court), Southwestern Law School (in Los Angeles Superior Court), the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University (in Nassau County Court, Mineola, N.Y.), and Widener University School of Law (in Newark Federal Court).

Hi Lizards!
I can't believe I couldn't make the SuperBowl this year...Everything was planned out then everything changed. I almost was able to throw Winston in the car this morning and be at Paulies house by lunch..I was going to be live blogging all week from Indy..There is no way I could be at work on Monday morning at 8am.. No mathematical freaking way the road trip works..Indy..
Wish I had more time off..It just didn't work..
Shit happens, My Dear!
Get over it!
(It's just a game...)
LOL!"
YaButt! Friday night is the Commissioner's Party, Saturday Night it's either NFL Corporate or Merchandising, Sunday Pre-Game Bruche, Super Bowl, then Super Bowl Post Game Dinner.

Hi lizards! It's Superbowl 24/7 right now.. So today I've watched the greatest SB commercials of all time..The Greatest games of all time..Live from Indy Shows from Saint Elmo's or the slippery Noodle...
My take..Never ever eat the fish at St Elmo's and you must go to the Noodle at some point in your life.. It's like the oldest bar in Indiana and is the classic blues bar..The best top ten in America..
You could get off Work on a Weds. Afternoon and drive there for a beer after work and hear some of the best blues players in America..Like I heard Matt' Guitar' Murphy after work one night...There is no place like it if you love the blues

They ended up being action figures and collectible toys. XD

"So you have a burning hatred for Steve Martin?
Nah. He's actually a real musician. I'm not your average American. I don't worship at the alter of famous actors. Especially crappy ones like George Clooney."
Steve Martin plays good bluegrass banjo at 163 beats a minute.
That ain't acting.
