So in other news I finally signed up for my Origins events today, any other Lizards going to Columbus Ohio this end of June?

What I would do right now for a trip. To a conference even. Just a trip.

What is Origins?

No, I’m going to GenCon in August, I hope. But that got more likely today, as I got two sales, putting me on track for the month.

The Senate has blocked a bill to repeal about $2 billion a year in tax breaks for the five biggest oil companies, a Democratic measure meant to respond to huge industry profits and $4-a-gallon gas prices.

It’s his sanctimonious hypocrisy that disturbs me most.

What do you see as the most pressing problem in the inner city today?

The parenting problem. A lot of minorities have such a problem with the single-parent situation. The parents are the single most important influence on a child, followed by education and the peer group. The number of single parents in the U.S. has quadrupled since the ’60s, and there has also been an increase in violence and school shootings. All that stuff has increased largely because of a lack of parenting, and many households only have one biological parent — so many of them are fatherless. It really creates a big problem.

You see single parents all the time in Hollywood, like Jodie Foster, Camryn Manheim and now Calista Flockhart. Do you think it’s sending a bad message?

I would say you have a better chance if your mother happens to be Jodie Foster or any of those women who can afford a swim teacher or a basketball coach, because there is a mentor right there. But in the inner city, parents do not have the money to hire a coach or join the soccer club. They have no one to drive the kids, no chauffeur or nanny. I think single parenting absolutely has an effect on kids down the line.

I see it firsthand in my family. If I am away on a film for three weeks, even though I come home every weekend, you can see the kids getting out of control. One person cannot create the discipline and the guidance and helping with homework. When I am at home, Maria and I drive the kids to school together; we pick them up together; we take them to dancing, soccer, horseback riding lessons. It takes a lot of effort. If you are not on top of the situation, the kids lose confidence in you.

Wow.

…Trump is not the weakest Republican in the two hypothetical match ups we tested with Dennis Kucinich. Kucinich’s lead over Sarah Palin if they were to face off would be 43-36. In that scenario Kucinich gets 16% of Republicans to Palin’s 12% of Democrats and leads her by 10 points with independents at 42-32.

Still, if John Boener is really clever he can turn this pandering to the GOP’s advantage. I’d suggest a counteroffer, one that Obama won’t like very much but is designed to be humane. Stake out a good position and then force Obama to negotiate. If he insists on further pandering, he’ll look like a posturing asshole.

I doubt Boener can find a “humane” counter offer that he can make in good faith of his party supporting and Obama wouldn’t like to take.

Newt has to play dodge-ball:

Gingrich showered with confetti, faith questions

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich refused to be pinned down Tuesday as a believer in creationism or evolution as the origin of human life during a gathering of Minnesota social conservatives, where he also endured a protester’s confetti shower.

The former House speaker adopted a nuanced stance in the thorny debate over how life first formed, telling his Minnesota Family Council audience that both theological and scientific views can be right.

“I believe that creation as an act of faith is true and I believe that science as a mechanical process is true,” Gingrich said at an afternoon session that preceded a more formal address. “Both can be true. I don’t think there is necessarily a conflict between the two.”
The answer left skeptics among the audience, the type Gingrich is working particularly hard to soothe in the early days of his campaign.

Retired plumber Marty Gavic said Gingrich’s unwillingness to embrace creationism is a strike against his candidacy.

“When he talks about God in government, then I believe if he’s a Godly man he should say that ‘I believe God created the heavens and earth because that’s in the Bible,’” said Gavic, who was among a few dozen people who sat through a screening of a film Gingrich co-produced on religion in American government.

I keep wondering if the GOP leadership has just decided to flip a coin and see whether they’ll A) run a base-pleasing candidate and suffer a total blow-out next November or B) run a “RINO” candidate and risk a third-party candidate splitting the vote.

Romney I’d happily vote for, and I think we’d all agree he’s sane. I’d also vote for Tim Pawlenty without any hesitation. Yes, he’s a creationist; But I also think him sane and trustworthy.

Newt Gingrich, I’m of two minds about. I’m often disgusted by the stuff he does, but he’s a good ideas man and a highly competant organizer. I can’t honestly say what I’d do if he were the nominee, though its about 55-45% in favor of voting for him (but that could change).

The Senate has blocked a bill to repeal about $2 billion a year in tax breaks for the five biggest oil companies, a Democratic measure meant to respond to huge industry profits and $4-a-gallon gas prices.

The problem is, it’s a lie, that talking point about “huge oil profits”. The oil industry makes money, true. But so do a lot of industries. Relative to their expenses and capital investment, oil companies make no better than average profits. One simple and easily checked point of evidence is that the oil industry does not enjoy unusual price-earnings ratios.

If that’s too much, then the rest of industry should also be forced to disgorge its “huge profits”.

The Obama administration should be ashamed of having demagogued the “speculators” and the oil industry, with half-truth-styled lies.

Sunday doesn’t exist, capish? The only way we can have an honest conversation is by pretending it never happened. Listen, I really want this and would rather sell my soul and appear monumentally stupid than continue enraging our moronic base.

Ryan has really handed the GOP a poison pill, and they swallowed it with gusto. Newt’s not stupid, he can see how unpopular Ryan’s budget is, how much damage it’s causing them. The Senate Republicans stripped the Medicare changes from the bill out of abject fear that the Democrats might bring it up for a “rub their noses in their own shit” vote. Republicans are going home to their districts and facing virtual torch and pitchfork opposition to the plan. But Newt will walk back anything, grovel and lie to further his dream of becoming king of the dipshits rather than face the wrath of the freepers and never get nominated.

[Link: azstarnet.com…]

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department will release no more information about the circumstances surrounding the killing of Jose Guerena during the serving of a search warrant by the department’s SWAT officers May 5 at his home.

Two weeks after the shooting the department has yet to disclose exactly what they were searching for in the Guerena home as well as three other residences in the area that were subjects of a drug investigation. Court documents that show what officers were searching for in the case have been sealed and what was seized as evidence has also been sealed.
….
On May 5, five members of the SWAT team fired 71 shots at Guerena while serving a search warrant at the 7100 block of South Redwater Drive. He was shot 60 times.

The 26-year-old former Marine was sleeping at about 9:30 a.m. after working the graveyard shift at Asarco’s Mission Mine when his wife woke him saying she heard noises outside and saw a man was at their window. Guerena told his wife to hide in a closet with their 4-year-old son, his wife said. He grabbed an AR-15 rifle and moments later was slumped in the kitchen, mortally wounded from a hail of gunfire.

Very good points. I am reading that the more level-headed French criticism (i.e., people not named Bernard) is centered on the fact that the US-style perp walk has the effect (deliberately or not) of making the accused look guilty.

I’m not sure how much of a problem it is. The jurors won’t necessarily have seen the perp walk coverage, and we already have rules like not handcuffing people in the courtroom and so on, letting them wear street clothes, to avoid the appearance of guilt.

I really like this guys blog. Here’s his take on the french alleged rapist and his bail hearing:

War Declared Against France
[Link: blog.simplejustice.us…]

Whether DSK committed the crime alleged or not, this isn’t the sort of crime for which bail would not be granted. It might be high bail based on the nature of the offense and potential sentence, say $100,000, or low bail based on the nature of the defendant, a man whose entire life is vested in his responsible position in the international community, and who can’t exactly run off to Morocco and hide.

But he could sneak on a train to Montreal wearing a fake mustache and grab the first flight to Aix-en-Provence, living out the rest of his life as an itinerant painter. Judge Jackson saw that coming a mile away.

Which creates the current conundrum. Does this mean that all wealthy French guys must be remanded? Is this the legacy of Roman Polanski? Well, yes. That’s exactly what this means, because the decision to remand ignored the many considerations that otherwise apply to a bail determination, all trumped by the argument that he has “the means, the motive and the connections to flee.”

People keep bringing up Roman Polanski and I think it’s a good point. If we know that we could have serious problems getting a suspect back from France is it really in the best interest of justice to grant them bail even if it’s something we would normally do?

Good points. It strikes me that’s exactly the case where you don’t give bail. If he was a US citizen they could revoke his passport and maybe let him out. This guy has nothing to hold him here though, and every reason to flee.

Very true, although the possibility of media influence on the trial still exists. It’s just a question of where you draw the line.

I would grant bail with an amount that would actually hurt the accused in the case of flight (which is what bail is meant to do after all).

If we can pay for a couple dozen school teachers in the Bronx for a decade with the proceeds, he can fuck off as far as I’m concerned.

Yeah, I thought of that after I posted the comment above. But balancing the rights of the accused and the accuser is always going to involve some kind of compromise. Otherwise, why would you ever grant bail?

Maybe the accuser should get some kind of say over where the bail money goes (I’m talking generally now, not particularly in the context of this specific case).

IN Sheriff: If We Need to Conduct RANDOM HOUSE to HOUSE Searches We Will
[Link: www.mikechurch.com…]

According to Newton County Sheriff, Don Hartman Sr., random house to house searches are now possible and could be helpful following the Barnes v. STATE of INDIANA Supreme Court ruling issued on May 12th, 2011. When asked three separate times due to the astounding callousness as it relates to trampling the inherent natural rights of Americans, he emphatically indicated that he would use random house to house checks, adding he felt people will welcome random searches if it means capturing a criminal.

Speaking under the condition of anonymity, a local city Police Chief with 30 years experience in law enforcement directly contradicted the Newton County Sheriff’s blatant disregard for privacy & liberty, stating that as an American first, such an action is unconscionable and that his allegiance is to the Indiana and federal Constitutions respectively. However, he also concurred that the ruling does now allow for police to randomly search homes should a department be under order by state or federal officials or under a department’s own accord.

I have no idea who Mike Church is, or if the sheriff actually said this, but if he did I hope the people remember this when election time rolls around.

Mission SFPD Officers Videotaped in Apparent Theft from Julian Hotel
[Link: missionlocal.org…]

The press release also states that the police report maintains that the room’s resident, Jesus “Jessie” Reyes, 64, matched a description provided to SFPD by a confidential informant. The report states that Reyes agreed to let police search his minivan and then offered to let them search his room, where they found methamphetamine.

Reyes was arrested, but prosecutors dropped charges against him on May 4 after Guerrero failed to show up to testify despite being issued a subpoena. According to his attorney, Deputy Public Defender Cindy Elias, Reyes had never been arrested before.
….
The video release comes less than a week after the Public Defender’s Office released surveillance footage that they say documents a similar incident on Dec. 30 at the Jefferson Hotel, in which Guerrero is also seen leaving an SRO room with a large bag that was not booked into evidence.

The evidence gathered so far is evidence of systematic misconduct within the Police Department, said Public Defender Jeff Adachi.

Arresting Jesus is bad karma.

Here’s a memo to Tom Friedman about the chances for an Arab-Israeli peace deal (and particularly a Palestinian-Israel deal). No deal can be had when the Palestinians refuse to undertake their most essential obligation under Oslo - agreeing to a 2-state solution.

When Hamas, which has reconciled with Fatah and rejoined the PA, refuses to recognize Israel’s right to exist and doesn’t include Israel on a map other than to use as targeting data for its terror plots, Israel lacks a partner in peace.

Israel can and has shown an uncommon willingness to swap land for peace, but the Gaza disengagement should have disabused the world of the notion that land for peace will work when one party to the deal doesn’t accept Israel’s existence. Instead of using Gaza to build a productive society, the Palestinian leadership turned the region into an armed camp for a terror war against Israel using fellow Palestinians as human shields. Palestinian propaganda continues touting those killed in these attacks as martyrs for the cause of liberating all of Israel from Israeli control.

That is not the framework for peace, and Netenyahu and other Israeli leaders would not be carrying out their sworn obligation to defend Israel from its enemies if it granted still more concessions to Palestinians when Palestinian obligations go unfulfilled.

Housing can be swapped - and has been in the past - it was, and never has been, the real stumbling block to peace no matter how much the left in Israel and the pro-Palestinians try to spin it. The history of Israel’s land swaps disprove that time and time again (Camp David, Gaza disengagement).

Palestinians simply can’t accept a Jewish state of Israel alongside a Palestinian state - regardless of what borders are delineated on a map. The border incursions weren’t about Israel capturing the West Bank, Golan and Gaza in 1967, but called for liberating all of Israel for the Palestinians; a tacit call for Israel’s destruction.

These are the partners in peace that Friedman and others like him think Israel should be making still more concessions to in the hopes that the Palestinians will somehow moderate.

Frankly, the recent history has shown that whenever Israel has made concessions, the result has been to portray Israel as weak and terror groups, including Hamas (still part of the PA) has unleashed waves of terror. Israel makes concessions and gets terror as a consequence. Israel doesn’t make concessions, and it still gets threats of terror. With that calculus, there’s no reason to make further concessions. The onus should be on the Palestinians to show that they are truly committed to a 2-state solution.

To that end, that means a full repeal of the Hamas charter and PLO/PA charter provisions calling for Israel’s destruction. Yet, we all know that will never happen since Hamas’ raison d’etre is to seek Israel’s destruction as a religious and political goal. Hamas considers Israel’s very existence as an abomination against Israel, and phrases its call to jihad as a duty for all Muslims. This isn’t a partner in peace, but the call by a terror group to commit genocide should it have the means at its disposal.

283 lawhawk  Wed, May 18, 2011 7:20:19am

re: #282 iossarian

US energy policy is a mess, subsidies or not.

US doesn’t get most of its energy from the Middle East. It actually gets the most imports from Canada, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Nigeria, and Venezuela. Supporting the Saudis doesn’t help wean the US from foreign dependency. Higher energy costs doesn’t help the economic recovery - and the price jumps we’ve seen (whether due to speculation or actual disruptions/concerns over viable supplies in the ME) are creating a real drag on the economy, increasing transport costs and energy prices.

Building alt energy is integral to a comprehensive energy policy (which the US has lacked for much of its history), and many of the same oil companies are also working on alt-energy as a diversification tactic. That means that if they’re not getting a straight subsidy for oil production/development/research, they may be getting it through the alt-energy channels. Eliminating the subsidies wont kill the oil companies, but I think it sends pricing signals to the oil industry that prices should be expected to further increase because the lag time on production from opening sites to drilling is so long. Even if Obama were to open up the entire US coast to drilling, it would be years before anyone sees a drop of that oil make its way through a pipeline to a refinery for ultimate distribution.

BTW, it’s rich that Friedman talks about US energy policy and extremist anti-Israel factions control the largest oil reserves, when he repeatedly touts the Saudi “peace” plan, all while the Saudis are helping Bahrain crack down against protesters, and looking to back stability in the region through continued support of autocratic regimes lest the Iranians take advantage to their own end.

The problem is, it’s a lie, that talking point about “huge oil profits”. The oil industry makes money, true. But so do a lot of industries. …
The Obama administration should be ashamed of having demagogued the “speculators” and the oil industry, with half-truth-styled lies.

The oil companies should operate in a real free market like all the other industries, without tax breaks and special interest influence. It seems the level of lobbying by big energy dwarfs all other industries except ag and military.

Oil is not like other industries in that respect.

Oil is also the key industry demagoguing and lying about AGW and carbon release. If you want to talk about honesty and doing the right thing for the country, Oil is far from being like all the other industries. They are the worst.

Oil is fungible. By basing our energy strategy on oil (regardless of where it comes from), we directly support those regimes that essentially survive because of it.

Or maybe Beck is trying to imply that Cesar Chavez has family bonds with the Other Chavez[1]. Who knows what goes into his head.

“Director Trier shocks Cannes with Nazi, Hitler jokes”

I thought I was a Jew for a long time and was very happy being a Jew,” said Von Trier, who, according to biographies was told by his mother on her death bed that the father he had known all his life was not his real father.

“Then later on came (Jewish and Danish director) Susanne Bier and then suddenly I wasn’t so happy about being a Jew. No, that was a joke, sorry.

“But it turned out I was not a Jew but even if I’d been a Jew I would be kind of a second rate Jew because there is kind of a hierarchy in the Jewish population.

“But anyway, I really wanted to be a Jew and then I found out I was really a Nazi, you know, because my family was German … which also gave me some pleasure.”

Dunst looked uncomfortable as he continued his remarks, which clearly took reporters by surprise.

“What can I say? I understand Hitler. I think he did some wrong things, yes absolutely, but I can see him sitting in his bunker in the end.

“I think I understand the man. He’s not what you would call a good guy, but I understand much about him and I sympathize with him a little bit. But come on, I’m not for the Second World War, and I’m not against Jews.

“I am of course very much for Jews. No, not too much because Israel is a pain in the ass. But still, how can I get out of this sentence?”

He expressed admiration for Nazi architect Albert Speer before ending another rambling sentence with: “OK, I’m a Nazi.”

That was 1989…

In 1989, von Trier’s mother revealed on her deathbed that the man who he thought was his father was not, and that she had had a tryst with her former employer, a man named Fritz Michael Hartmann (1909–2000),[43] who descended from a long line of Roman Catholic classical musicians,[44] in order to give her son “artistic genes”.[45]

The most intersting lines:

HH: Now your former colleague, John McCain, said look, there’s no record, there’s no evidence here that these methods actually led to the capture or the killing of bin Laden. Do you disagree with that? Or do you think he’s got an argument?

RS: I don’t, everything I’ve read shows that we would not have gotten this information as to who this man was if it had not been gotten information from people who were subject to enhanced interrogation. And so this idea that we didn’t ask that question while Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was being waterboarded, he doesn’t understand how enhanced interrogation works. I mean, you break somebody, and after they’re broken, they become cooperative. And that’s when we got this information. And one thing led to another, and led to another, and that’s how we ended up with bin Laden.

Emphasis mine.

That’s an unbelievable gaffe! Telling John McCain that he knows nothing about TORTURE??!! McCain is no presidential material but he did have the right stuff and stamina to endure 5 years as a prisoner of war and lived to tell.

On the other hand, context is everything - not knowing his work well, I would nonetheless say that there’s little evidence that he hates Jewish people and is genuinely a Nazi sympathiser, rather than a confused man whose thoughts sounded a lot better in his head than outside it.

Beck on the other hand is either deranged, or evil, depending on whether he believes the shit he comes out with on a daily basis or not.

Seventy-five miles north of Las Vegas sits a land parcel in the middle of the desert. Officially, the U.S. government has never acknowledged the existence of Area 51. Unofficially, it has become a place associated with conspiracy theories, alien landings and tiny spaceships.

Journalist Annie Jacobsen tells Fresh Air’s Terry Gross that the site has remained classified for many years — not because of aliens or spaceships, but because the government once used the site for top-secret nuclear testing and weapons development.

But here is a prediction: Sarkozy will not benefit from Strauss-Kahn’s ugly demise. The main beneficiary will be the politician with the fastest-growing constituency in France at the moment: Marine Le Pen, daughter of Jean-Marie Le Pen and now the leader of the uber-nationalist, anti-European Union, anti-immigration National Front. Much more presentable than her father, Le Pen started polling higher than Sarkozy in March, not least because she offers populist economics and promises to prevent the number of North African immigrants from swelling.

If the Post connected the known addresses to where Harlem United operates housing, then the likelihood that the accuser was someone with HIV/AIDS is quite likely under the organization’s rules for obtaining their housing.

The organization refused to answer any general questions as per HIPAA rules, but the Post’s connection raises the ethical and legal questions since they’ve suggested that she has the disease based on her prior housing status. Knowing that her name is likely to be released at some point, this opens a whole can of worms and shows a gap in HIPAA protection.

Bad move, Jon. Obama is just hyping immigration issues to try to portray Republicans as racists. He’s not trying to actually pass a bill. You’re smarter than that, Jon. Don’t hype political stunts just because they’re from someone you like.

I’ll say again what I’ve said before. I don’t give a shit what motivates politicians. What I care about is how they vote (and to a lesser but still considerable extent what they say).

Republicans vote against the DREAM act. Democrats vote for it.

That’s enough for me (on this issue - there are plenty of others).

Von Trier made some stupid and offensive comments.

BBL.

Von Trier sounds like a classic European intellectual ‘oh I’m not an anti-Semite, giggle giggle’ type. He’s probably an asshole. There are a million of them.

I have to deal with other pro-Israel activists telling me with tears in their eyes how MUUUUCH Glenn Beck loves Israel, and how Obama is whatever the latest thing is,so he gets in my way more frequently than just another Eurotrash director.

Presumably there is a non-zero number of people who would like to be considered Jewish for family/cultural reasons, but who for whatever reason are not (unless in the Reform sense, as SFZ mentioned above).

My own family had something of a history of this in that the small church that some of my relatives attended was very exclusionary of people who didn’t come from that church (and there was no obvious way of getting into it either).

A patrilineal Jew who wants to be religiously Jewish can convert and make it official. I know a few who have, usually because they are marrying Jews, and want to make the kids’ status unambiguous. Especially if you were raised in the tradition, or in proximity to it, it’s not difficult.

If you don’t want a religious conversion, you can be a person of Jewish ancestry, family and culture just fine. Occasionally you may have to deal with some schmuck saying, “Oh, then you’re not really Jewish,” helpfully, but if you’re over sixteen, you should be able to explain that family and culture is not the same as halacha. BREAKING: Jerome Corsi’s Birther Book Pulled from Shelves!

In a stunning development one day after the release of Where’s the Birth Certificate? The Case that Barack Obama is not Eligible to be President, by Dr. Jerome Corsi, World Net Daily Editor and Chief Executive Officer Joseph Farah has announced plans to recall and pulp the entire 200,000 first printing run of the book, as well as announcing an offer to refund the purchase price to anyone who has already bought either a hard copy or electronic download of the book.

In an exclusive interview, a reflective Farah, who wrote the book’s foreword and also published Corsi’s earlier best-selling work, Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak out Against John Kerry and Capricorn One: NASA, JFK, and the Great “Moon Landing” Cover-Up, said that after much serious reflection, he could not go forward with the project. “I believe with all my heart that Barack Obama is destroying this country, and I will continue to stand against his administration at every turn, but in light of recent events, this book has become problematic, and contains what I now believe to be factual inaccuracies,” he said this morning. “I cannot in good conscience publish it and expect anyone to believe it.”

When asked if he had any plans to publish a corrected version of the book, he said cryptically, “There is no book.” Farah declined to comment on his discussions of the matter with Corsi.

Sadly that article is supposed to be satire.

UPDATE, 12:25 p.m., for those who didn’t figure it out yet, and the many on Twitter for whom it took a while: We committed satire this morning to point out the problems with selling and marketing a book that has had its core premise and reason to exist gutted by the news cycle, several weeks in advance of publication. Are its author and publisher chastened? Well, no. They double down, and accuse the President of the United States of perpetrating a fraud on the world by having released a forged birth certificate. Not because this claim is in any way based on reality, but to hold their terribly gullible audience captive to their lies, and to sell books. This is despicable, and deserves only ridicule. That’s why we committed satire in the matter of the Corsi book. Hell, even the president has a sense of humor about it all. Some more serious reporting from us on this whole “birther” phenomenon here, here, and here.

re: #429 Alouette

There is an Israeli writer who wants to be officially listed as “Not Jewish.”

OK, I think he should get what he wants. Maybe he can even get a de-circumcision or whatever kind of operation where they sew the foreskin back on.

Why does it offend you so much that this man wants to leave your religion? I’m assuming this part:

An earlier request to the Interior Ministry was turned down and Kaniuk explains in his petition that he does not wish to be part of a “Jewish Iran” or belong to “what is today called the religion of Israel.”

So do you dislike him because he wants to leave or because of his attitude towards it?

At the Museum of Jewish Heritage

Pretty cool that a nice converted Gentile girl could do such a thing.

Heck, there’s an Irish woman who’s still Catholic who has become a leading force in modern Yiddish theater translation.

If you don’t want to be religious, don’t be religious.

If you want to become something else, become something else. The Baha’i have their world headquarters in Israel, and they’ve always struck me as nice.

If you want make a big public deal out of leaving the Jewish people because you think we’re tainted by the eeeevil State of Israel, then yes, we have some issues, especially since you’re going to show up on every fucking speaking circuit in the anti-Zionist world, chattering about how fucking brave you were to make a stand.

I would have gone with “hopped up on goofballs,” but yours is more elegant.

Evolution in Action: Lizard Moving From Eggs to Live Birth

Evolution has been caught in the act, according to scientists who are decoding how a species of Australian lizard is abandoning egg-laying in favor of live birth.

Along the warm coastal lowlands of New South Wales (map), the yellow-bellied three-toed skink lays eggs to reproduce. But individuals of the same species living in the state’s higher, colder mountains are almost all giving birth to live young.

It doesn’t offend me. Let him leave. Nobody wants to stop him. I think he’s being an ass about it because he craves the attention.

re: #403 darthstar

He’s got a couple of decent films. Dancer in the Dark (starring Bjork) is actually a very beautiful, if tragic, film. It fell flat with American audiences…we like our happy endings too much. But I recommend seeing it on Netflix if you haven’t seen it yet. Bjork is disturbingly captivating in this role.

VERY minor ftfy….IMO, the “in this role” is superfluous. I don’t like all she’s done as an artist, but holy shit, this little Icelander has some SERIOUS artistic balls. No fear, boundless ideas. Not always listenable, but always interesting….

I leave it to others to comment on her “fashion” sense….

You want bad? Try Russian movies about WWII. You WILL understand how bad we had it, comrade.

Defiance (2008 film)
[Link: en.wikipedia.org…]

“Defiance is a 2008 World War II era film written, produced, and directed by Edward Zwick, set during the occupation of Belarus by Nazi Germany. The film is an account of the Bielski partisans, a group led by four Jewish brothers who saved and recruited Jews in Poland (now Belarus) during the Second World War. The film stars Daniel Craig as Tuvia Bielski, Liev Schreiber as Zus Bielski, Jamie Bell as Asael Bielski, and George MacKay as Aron Bielski.”

Egg meets face moment for Rick Santorum!

The most intersting lines:

Emphasis mine.

That’s an unbelievable gaffe! Telling John McCain that he knows nothing about TORTURE??!! McCain is no presidential material but he did have the right stuff and stamina to endure 5 years as a prisoner of war and lived to tell.

Santorum, you’re the douche of the week!

Rachel Maddow is just as baffled as I was.

Santorum already had a Google problem….

…..Now he’s got another one!

474 William of Orange  Wed, May 18, 2011 12:33:18pm

And now the reactions.

Mark Salter, a McCain aide (on facebook):
“For pure, blind stupidity, nobody beats Santorum. In my 20 years working in the Senate, I never met a dumber member, which he reminded me of today,”

Cindy McCain, John’s wife, via twitter:
“Imagine pres candidate Santorum saying my husband doesn’t understand torture,” she tweeted. “Really?!?!”

And now Santorum goes in full Newt Gingrich mode:
“I disagree with Senator McCain’s view that the enhanced interrogation techniques used on a select few high-value terrorist detainees were unsuccessful nor do I believe they amounted to torture,” Santorum said in a statement.

“For anyone to infer my disagreement with Senator McCain’s policy position lessens my respect for his service to our country and all he had to endure is outrageous and unfortunate.”

I guess he thinks Ryan’s plan stinks too…..
