I have had a number of very attractive, intelligent, and talented girlfriends (none that were wealthy or famous, though) that turned out to be absolute... well, we're not allowed to use that word here.

One of my first serious girlfriends was a real airhead, but man was she sweet to me. I should have placed more value on her affections than her lack of intellect, but like a fool I let that one get away. I was young.

The one's I can remember I cant find, the rest I can't remember the track names. It's been 7 years or so since I was a DJ. I vaguely remember some early 90s industrial group in that "guitar industrial" sub-genre I was never really into (outside of KMFDM and Front 242), that nearly the entire track was Frank Booth yelling "Don't you fucking look at me!"

There's a noise/Drum & Bass crossover called Paste that has a track called "I don't like you" that has most of Frank's comments about beer and bourbon in it though. If you aren't into that kind of shit... or even if you are it still sucks, but the samples are amusing. It was so obscure as to only be found on a very rare compilation.

I heard most of these, including the samples in Anthrax's "I'm the Man" way before I ever actually saw Blue Velvet, so the first time I did all I did through the entire flick was say "oh wow that's where that came from!"

My friend spilled Ron Diaz on my foot earlier.

OT: is anyone following the Mark Sanford wierdness? It seems to be getting stranger and stranger:

First no one knows where he is, including his wife-- then someone says he's hiking the appalachian trail, and now this:

On Tuesday, sources told News 4's Nigel Robertson that a state vehicle is missing and was tracked down, not to the Appalachian Trail, but to the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta.

Sources told Robertson that a federal agent spotted Sanford in the airport boarding a plane. Robertson was told that the governor was not accompanied by security detail.

Sanford has been out of reach for more than four days, including Father's Day.

Sawyer has emphasized that the governor was hiking on the Appalachian Trail and that it wasn't something the staff or Jenny Sanford were concerned about.

But sources told WYFF News 4 that the federal agent who spotted Sanford saw him at the Atlanta airport, which is about 80 miles from the start of the trail.

WYFF News 4 has not yet confirmed where the plane was going or how the governor got to the airport, but it is clear there are two very different stories.

Over time, I've noticed that a woman's personality as I see it, affects the way she appears to me. She could be extremely beautiful, but if she is a rotten person inside, I eventually come to see her as ugly. This isn't metaphorical either. They literally begin to appear ugly. The reverse is true as well. Not-so-attractive or plain women begin to look better if they are really good people on the inside. (This is why I thought the movie Shallow Hal was so hilarious.) I have to know her well enough to know what her real personality is like though. I'm not psychic so this never helped me avoid hooking up with a couple of monsters.

Prior to 1990, when Barack Obama contracted to write Dreams From My Father, he had written very close to nothing. Then, five years later, this untested 33 year-old produced what Time Magazine has called -- with a straight face -- "the best-written memoir ever produced by an American politician."

The public is asked to believe Obama wrote Dreams From My Father on his own, almost as though he were some sort of literary idiot savant. I do not buy this canard for a minute, not at all. Writing is as much a craft as, say, golf. To put this in perspective, imagine if a friend played a few rounds in the high 90s and then a few years later, without further practice, made the PGA Tour. It doesn't happen.

And yet, given the biases of the literary establishment, no reviewer of note has so much as questioned Obama's role in the writing, then or now. As the New York Times gushed, Obama was "that rare politician who can write . . . and write movingly and genuinely about himself." These accolades matter all the more because Obama has built his political persona around his presumably superior intellect, Dreams being exhibit A.

Shy of a confession by those involved, I will not be able to prove conclusively that Obama did not write this book. As shall be seen, however, there are only two real possibilities: one is that Obama experienced a near miraculous turnaround in his literary abilities; the second is that he had major editorial help, up to and including a ghostwriter.

The weight of the evidence overwhelming favors the latter conclusion and strongly suggests who that ghostwriter is. In that this remains something of a work in progress, I am willing to test my hypothesis against any standard of proof and appreciate any and all good leads.

Jack Cashill's claim to expertise rests on the fact that he's ghostwritten a celeb biography.

Me, I'll go with the guy who actually is an academic, who spends his life trained in the analysis of texts.

Why Jack Cashill is an idiot, in brief:

According to Jack Cashill—in an article first published at WorldNetDaily—Dreams from My Father was probably written by Bill Ayers. Cashill opens by demonstrating that Obama, unlike every undergraduate ever, published crap poems in a college literary journal. These crap poems “show not a glint of promise,” Cashill tells us, nor did a “heavily edited, unsigned student case comment” published in the Harvard Law Review.

Cashill is no ordinary literary detective: in the past he has been called upon to rescue celebrity biographies, so he recognizes when someone, in this case “[w]hoever rescued Barack Obama’s Dreams from My Father[,] invest[s] considerable time to invent a distinct voice and style for an unknown author.” And who is this someone?

Bill Ayers.

How does Cashill know? Because the “distinct voice and style” Ayers invents for Obama “is surely Ayers’ [own].” Ayers invented a style—his own—then wrote Dreams from My Father in it.

To be blunt: if you find Cashill’s identification of “sea imagery” and his lists of words both Obama and Ayers use to be particularly anything other than laughable pablum, you’re an eighth-wit.

If, however, you only use Cashill’s juvenile musings as a hypothetical which, if true, suggests all the unsavory things you already believe about Obama, then you’ve fully embraced the Cashill Doctrine. What do I mean by that? If you deconstruct Cashill’s name, you’ll find that it contains the words “cash” and shill.” “Cash” refers to paper bank notes which, in more robust times, could be exchanged for goods or services. A “shill,” according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is “one who poses as a disinterested advocate of another but is actually of the latter’s party; a mouthpiece, a stooge.” It goes without saying that shills often shill for cash, but in this case, I think we can say the shill’s shilling for cash and attention.

Because no one with any literary training can read Cashill’s tripe without recognizing it as the shoddy work of a dim student asked to compare and contrast two texts.

I really don't have that many questions about what 0bama studied or learned. I assumed it was standard elitist socialism available on nearly every American campus.

I'm not saying that Ayers did the ghostwriting, but that there are similarities. And we do tend to take inspiration from those with whom we associate. I see this in music all the time, especially in my musicological studies.

Look, I'll give just one example. At the end of cashill's article, he thinks he's delivered the definitive deathblow by pointing out that Obama uses the word "ballast".

Cashill's reasoning? "Ballast is a nautical term, Ayers once worked on a boat, AND...." (wait for it, this is the best part) "I didn't know what ballast meant until I looked it up"

So Cashill's best, most irrefutable evidence that Ayers wrote Dreams is that Cashill is too stupid to have encountered the word ballast before, and he's too illiterate to realise that it's often used in metaphorical contexts.

Thanks, but no thanks. I prefer my 'experts' to argue from a position of, well, knowing something, rather than arguing that "I never heard of this before, therefore i can draw conclusions about it."

In literature as well as music, it's exceedingly rare for a person to have only one influence; typically they have many, and they are also typically the product of some tradition(s) or other, no matter how innovative they may be.

Same with Ayers and Obama. Not that either is particularly innovative in terms of lit style, at all, but they're products of the same tradition. Like anyone else who went to those schools or ones like them.

The Navy is anal about securing power and red tagging it before working on it. During the tagging process, you need a separate person to verify the correct breaker. Once tagged, you must verify no power to the fixture by using a multimeter. Then, and only then, can you work on it.

Comes in handy when working on -28,000 volt radar power supplies.

I knew Cashill was the author of that ridiculous rumour, but the really interesting thing is that Cashill originally published it on WingNut Daily, and later on his own site, and American Thinker is only another place that picked it up. I remembered AT because I just saw last week that they were still publishing dreck by Cashill.

That fact that this person went straight to the source *I* mentioned --when it wasn't even the first or main place this article appeared--suggests to me that they genuinely knew nothing at all about this, apart from what they'd heard fringe blogs mutter.

Lots of time they use multiwire branch circuits on lighting which is a 3 phase network with a common neutral.So the feed can be dead but there is more voltage on the neutral than on the hot wires. I got hung up in one once, it was the only time I couldn't break myself clear. Had someone else not knocked the ladder out from under me it could have been fatal. As for radar power supplies, we had to work on the 400hz generators. Electricity at 400hz is alot scarier than at 60hz.

Very depressing story from Worcester, MA. A Judge sent a 7-year old boy to live with his biological father (a multiply convicted felon) for the summer. He'd never known the boy,who had been living in AL with his grandmother (who has custody). The father promptly beat the boy to the point where he's "clinically dead" and the police are calling it a murder investigation.

Two words: death penalty

From what I've gathered, they plan on "nesting" during and after the divorce, which means that the kids will not have to go from their home to their parents' respective homes, instead their parents will take turns living in the kids' home.

I'm not condoning Jon's behavior at all, but how much is Kate doing with the kids when she's out doing book signing tours and criss-crossing the country. Seems as though there is enough bad behavior on both sides. Maybe that is why there was a cash settlement offer made at the time Kate filed for divorce. As for the nesting, it only seems practical, imagine the entourage required to transport all 8 back and forth.

I just got mail from a college friend of mine who is also a veteran, and who worked in Iraq providing security for people and things that needed to get froom point A to point B. He is a good guy with a great sense of humor, and a generous spirit.
All of which makes it even more difficult to read his Bilderberger, CFR, Luap Nor, Nazis-as-Darwinists, Soros, WorldNetDaily lunacy.
He wrote a conspiracy introduction to a Darwin-bashing "book review" posted to WND by petulant kook Ellis Washington. In his introduction, he announces that the History Channel program Life After People (based on the informative and engaging book) is one of the ways in which we are being programmed by our masters, evidence of our sinister overlords' view that "we are not needed in the future."

I really want to engage him on this, but I absolutely dread the conversation. I would rather remember him the way I do now, and I fear that by engaging, all I will accomplish is to degrade the memory of an old friend. Still clinging to my illusion, I guess.

Sometimes the Death Penalty is the only thing remotely akin to justice. An eye for an eye, a life for a life. It makes sense to me.

I don't know. In this case, we've got a guy in his late 30's, who murdered his kid, and made that child's life a misery for weeks beforehand.

That guy has had so many years that the child didn't get to have. He stole those years.

In a way, I'd rather this guy stay alive, in very unhappy conditions, for a long time. Because death alone lets him off too easy.
And people who kill kids, especially their own, aren't too well liked in prison. No-one there will buy the "it was an accident" bullshit, given that it'd apparently been going on for weeks.
