Love Janis, a Beaumont girl. Cher? Meh. The Bangles, The B-52s (saw them at the 40-Watt in Athens), the Gogo's were great. Toni Basil sucked, and Bananarama was actually fun. I loved the Motown girl groups. Totally shit hot.
Saw The Runaways and the Ramones at McAllister Auditorium in (1976?, 77?) at Tulane on a saturday night show for a buck. No shit. Outstanding!

If you mean the ones in Duma:
1. Spravedlivaya Rossiya (Just Russia) - a moderate socialist party (part of the Socialist International, IIRC), run by a now former speaker of the Council of the Federation Mironov. It was created from above as a sort of a phony opposition to UR, with Mironov being loyal to Putin, but always saying harsh things about UR (which Putin heads). Recently he has been removed from his post as a speaker, the future of the party is uncertain.
2. Zhirinovsky's Liberal Democrats, the phony/loyal "nationalist" opposition (Zhirik always lambasts everyone and always votes as the current leader needs; e.g. he supported Yeltsin in 1996).
3. CPRF, fucking Stalinist douches (but also a true opposition).
There's a new party being created from above, "Pravoye delo" ("The right deed"/"The right cause"), a fiscally right-wing party now headed by oligarch Mikhail Prokhorov. Apparently those who run elections will give them some votes to get into Duma. Some say it is being positioned as Medvedev's party.

Ended up going to Berlin, Munich, Prague, Budapest, and Vienna instead which was great but had I gone to Russia, I would have been with my International Relations professor who was the one responsible for my interest in the region in the first place.

Heh, well, kinda. He's all over the place. Being half-Jewish himself (his original surname is Ejdelshtein), he probably wasn't antisemitic in 1980s, when he was part of the leadership of the Society of Jewish culture "Shalom". When he got into politics he understood what sells well in Russia, so he began playing with all this aggressive and Russian nationalist rhetoric. On Jewish issues he is all over the place. He doesn't seem to be a Holocaust denier - in one of his books he says that 6 million Jews were murdered indeed. But on the subsequent pages he brings up Finkelstein's "Holocaust industry" thesis, etc. - you know how it goes. He also met with Ernst Zuendel, and I think LDPR published one of Juergen Graf's HD books. In his current speeches though he is not as fire-breathing as one could expect.

re: #75 ProLifeLiberal
Well, first of all the correlation between popularity and who holds the power is not straightforward, so there is no vacuum to fill as of yet.
Second, I'm tactically strongly pro-Medvedev. If anything, his style differs. It counts for something. On a personal level he is more or less a liberal, a technocrat and an anti-Stalinist.

re: #78 Alexzander
I'm not saying that it is. My point is, he is more of a Holocaust obfuscator than anything. And that's basically what he is on any issue. It's simply hard to tell what he really believes, because his whole role is to play this populist nationalist (one of the party slogans is "We're for the poor. We're for the [ethnic] Russians.") who draws off the votes from radicals, so he plays a useful role, but he is an actor first and foremost.

Ah, yes, sorry. Why wouldn't it lose popularity? They're a party of bureaucracy, of fat cats, pretending to be for the people; the new CPSU, if you will. The most popular current moniker for them is "The Party of Swindlers and Thieves". Meanwhile the situation doesn't really improve, the corruption grows, with most corruption naturally being among the members of the ruling elite. People see it.

I saw some holocaust denial clip on youtube a couple months ago - cant remember the name but it was a whole series of claims. But the one I've been meaning to research myself was something about lamp shades made out of human skin by the Nazi's, as well as shrunken heads. The video claimed that these were actually artifacts from other parts of the world or just completely made up - and that this was part of an attempt to demonize Germany after the war. Have you heard about that, and is that a common story in holocaust denial circles?

Yeah, I know that video, it's by my old nemesis "denierbud" aka "Carto's Cutlass Supreme" at CODOH forum (I and my friends debunked a whole 30-part YT movie he made about Treblinka, Belzec and Sobibor).
The story with the shrunken heads and lampshades (as well as human soap) is more of a mountain made of a mole hill. It doesn't really prove anything about the Nazi regime as a whole, because even for the Nazis it was an aberration (I mean, how many Japanese skulls were taken as souvenirs by the US soldiers, but does that prove anything?). Let's be frank - it was used for the propaganda purposes because it had a great effect at that time. In reality, there was a single lampshade that was given to Koch as a gift IIRC around 1941 (acc. to the museum site), and there were samples of skin with tattoos from the pathology lab, but the claims that prisoners were killed to make lampshades out of them are spurious upon analysis. The shrunken head presented at Nuremberg might have been real, and we do know that several such artifacts were produced in Nazi pathology labs (as we know from a Nazi document forbidding the making of such artifacts), but again, I'm not sure what this is supposed to prove.

re: #101 Sergey Romanov
Interesting thing is that all this is not even about the Holocaust, because there is no evidence that any prisoners that might have been used for Danzig soap, for the lampshade/skin samples and for the shrunken head were Jewish. At least in the first and the last cases those were Poles.

Thanks for the answers.
Thats broadly what I assumed. Cant remember where I saw the links to those videos but it might have been something like stormfront (I occasionally head over there to see what that worldview is up to).
It seems like the overall goal of people like "denierbud" is again to obfuscate the history, so as to cast doubt on events wider than the specific issues at hand.
what is the CODOH forum?
105 | Lord Baron Viscount Duke Earl Count Planckton Thu, Aug 4, 2011 12:00:48am |
re: #104 Alexzander
Denierbud is not an obfuscator, he is a straight-up denier and moreover, he even proudly accepts this label (unlike most deniers). He lives in SF, btw.
CODOH is a "Committee for Open Debate on the Holocaust", a classic denier org founded by Bradley Smith, who likes to put ads for it in student newspapers.

July 31, 2011 - 10:44 pm | PermalinkWhy is an argument from racial and ethnic nationalism necessary to put an end to unchecked immigration. There are many, many other good arguments for why mass immigration is insane and suicidal.
In theory, an argument from racial and ethnic nationalism is not necessary to put an end to unchecked immigration. In theory, it’s not even necessary to preserve the racial and ethnic nation.
Our advocacy team actively collaborates with groups across the political spectrum (all of which are explicitly against preserving our ethnic identity) to help reduce immigration.
But this isn’t really about the Muslim invaders. It’s not really about the Mexican invaders. It’s not really about the Black youth mobs. What it’s really about is a lack of a will of a people to live. As long as America and Europe are spiritually and ideologically hellbent on suicide, they’ll find new ways to keep hurting themselves. Even if ABB’s anti-Islamic crusade scenario were actualized throughout Europe, they would still be slaughtering their own offspring by the millions. They would still be barren. They would still be decadent and nihilistic. They would still be allowing Afro-Caribbean and myriad other populations to elbow in on their homeland.
Removing Islamic immigration from Europe is akin to hiding the gun from a man who’s suicidal. It may buy some time, but if a guy’s really set on killing himself, he’ll figure out some other way to do it.
I do believe that only an argument from racial and ethnic nationalism will be sufficient to steel Europeans to take the bold action necessary. After all, stopping illegal immigration and asylum fraud is insufficient. Reducing legal immigration to reasonable levels isn’t sufficient. Stopping legal immigration cold isn’t sufficient. Offering cash prizes for emigration isn’t sufficient. Deporting most of them isn’t sufficient. Only deporting each and every last non-White community from Europe is sufficient.
The sorts of mild arguments that operate within the mainstream paradigms and respectable bourgeoisie talking points are well and good for slowing the acceleration of the rate of our demise. But the radical steps necessary to actually reverse our course require the widespread acceptance of these radical ideas.
But let’s grant that one can find some clever angle to convince voters to deport all the non-Whites without requiring White Americans and Europeans to embrace their right to survive. That only solves the immigration dimension of our multifaceted problem. The mainstream paradigms and respectable bourgeoisie talking points would spell doom for the West if it were a fortified island continent.

Directions
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Fit a sheet tray with a wire rack and spray with nonstick cooking spray.
Mix together buttermilk, lemon juice, hot sauce, onion, thyme, garlic, salt, and pepper to a large bowl. Add chicken and coat with mixture. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for 3 hours or up 12 hours.
Mix corn flakes, Parmesan cheese, and thyme together. Season with salt and pepper.
Remove chicken from the marinade, letting the excess drip off, and dredge through the corn flake-Parmesan mixture, pressing to help it adhere.
Place on the wire rack-fitted sheet tray and bake for 45 minutes until golden and crisp.
Cook's Note: Remove the skin to save calories. Soaking chicken in buttermilk leaves the chicken incredibly moist with a delicious flavor.
I was looking up recipes and came across this. Now, I took tech writing in college (what little I have) and understand the need to make stuff idiot proof. But if I follow these directions the way they're written, my oven will be on for 3-12 hours plus 45 minutes of bake time.:)

TPM:
Begolly confided in fellow jihadist enthusiast "Khalidabdalhakim" in an online conversation in November that he "really started to hate this society" after an encounter with a Christian minister at a young age.
"when i was like 13 or 14 some queer he tried to kidnap me," Begolly wrote. "he came to me and put his hand on my le[g] and said...hey sweetie and i said who r u? he said he was a christian minister...he said the world would be a better place without women. he [g]ot closer and whisper in my ears... there would be just us men... but alhamdullah... i escaped."
...
His ideology is an eccentric and disjointed mix of Islamic extremism, an admiration for Adolf Hitler, hatred for both Democrats and Republicans (the former for their support of "queers and abortions and anti firearms" and the latter because they "destory [sic] other countrys"), racism against African-Americans, admiration for the founding fathers and a militia mentality.
"when i wake up in the morning...the first thing i think about is killing...seriously... i think about killing all the time," he wrote in one conversation. "as i type this...my AK is propped up next to me...mujahideen style."
He was training, he wrote, to be killed as a martyr and believed he'd be rewarded in heaven, likely with 79 virgins.
When the cops found him, they'd find a "bulge in my pants...they know i see something when i am killed that make me realllllllllly happy."
Fantasies about women played a big role in Begolly's discussions. He recalled a dream he had where he was at a "really fancy dinner" with flowers, caviar and sterling silver ware, where he encountered "the most beautiful girl i ever see" who promised to marry him if he was martyred.
But in real life, he said he was ashamed to go on a date because of his poor manners.
People are sick.

Good Finds Today!by Emerson Begolly on Fri Sep 12, 2003 8:00 pm
Hello Everyone!Today, 12 September 2003, I got two great uniforms today. I will tell you of each of them. But, I have some questions to ask, too. Enjoy!
1. I bought an East German camo tunic at a Goodwill for $1.49!!! The size tag reads sg 56 (or a US 56 Long). Everything is in excellent condition, except for some lint, which I will remove.
2. At a yard sale, I bought an IKE jacket for $0.25!!! Now that is one hell of a deal! The size is Large, and the date of '56 is marked on the inside of the tunic. On of the buttons appears to have been restitched. But, I have a few questions. Here is the first: on the inside of the tunic just below the shoulders are pads sewn on. They are just like that the pads that women use to emphesize their shoulders. Also, the buttons on the shoulder boards are marked with anchors. Is this a Marines of Navy jacket? I would much appreciate help.
Thanks for looking!

Julius Streicher. We could talk about subjects that may be deemed "offensive" to some, and enjoy "adult" books and films! I could talk stupid around him and he would just talk goofy back! I am interested in some of the same things as Streicher. If he were unavalible, I would choose SS-Gruppenfuhrer Heinrich "Gestapo" Muller. He could teach me how to be shrewd like a fox and sneak around.
Any opinions or comments?

I believe that the Eichmann trial was a total disgrace of justice. First all, it was kidnapping, a crime that is totally imoral. Second, Eichmann did not kill anyone, and I believe that he was harmless because of his weak stomach. He was not hurting anyone (after the war), so he should have been left to be free.[edited by forum moderator]

Vegetarians in Historyby Emerson Begolly on Sun Jun 01, 2003 12:07 am
First off, I am a vegetarian and have been ever since I was about 5 years old. I have no real idea why. I guess that the taste of meat and the fact that it came from an animal never appealed to me. Althought, I do eat eggs, fish, and dairy. I just like vegetables. Now they have meat substitutes. I believe that vegetables are good for you and important for the human body, where as meat is a non-essential accessory to ones diet. Man can fully function without meat.Second, are you a vegetarian. If so, please tell me why. When did you stop eating meat. Are there any animal products that you will eat? Please tell me.
Now here is the main part. Here are some inportant people in history that are vegetarians:
-Me (of course )
-Ghandi
-Benjamin Franklin
-Adolf Hitler
-Albert Einstein
-Jesus Christ
-Leonardo DeVinci
-Dr. Michael Klaper
-Henry Longfellow

I know a KZ guard (won't give name out of respect). He was never prosecuted after the war because he got a job in the US Marines and even served in Korea and got the Purple Heart!!!
He has his entire WW2 uniform set: hat, ribbon bar, KVK 1 without swords, Silver DRL Sports Badge, silver, wound badge, tunic with all insignia, pants, boots, dagger, Luger pistol, belt, etc. I have no idea how he got it all here, though. I've been trying to milk items off of him for years now and he just laughs at he saying I should be into sports. He once showed me a photo of him wearing his US Korean War medals and WW2 German medals. I thinks he's proud to have served in US and Germany. Just to let you know, he claimed that he DID NOT commit any war crimes. He was in the Das Reich Waffen SS until he got his legs shot up by a machine gun and went to serve at a KZ (I won't say which one also out of respect). He brought the people into the camp and made sure that no one escaped. When I asked him if he had ever killed anyone he said that he did, but only when he had to. Then he started getting really upset and changed the topic. The most info I got from him was that he made sure that everyone got from the train into the camp and that no one escaped, he had his legs shot up in Poland before he had shot two Poles at a machine gun, and he did kill Koreans and was injured by a grenade fragment. He is very patriotic, both to the US and Germany, and belongs to both veteran organizations for the SS and US armed forces. As far as I know is in OK health. I have not seen him though since my birthday in late March.Em.

What if there was no Holocaust?by Emerson Begolly on Thu May 15, 2003 6:10 pm
I am not denying the Holocaust, so this isn't offensive.
What I am saying is what if Hitler had not order the excutions of "undesirables?" Say he was still anti-Sematic, but just banned Jews from the armed forces, fired them from jobs, and other thing, but did not have anyone kill them. Them same with the other groups that Hitler didn't like? THen what? Would there still be trials for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Nurenberg and elsewhere? What would have happened to Hitler's generals and political leaders, and the SS? Would there have been any reason for the leaders to kill themselves? Would Hitler still be considered the way he is now? Or could the Nazis have won the war because they weren't wasting man-power on killing people that they didn't like? What do you think?Em.

WASHINGTON — A federal judge has ruled that former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld can be sued personally for damages by a former U.S. military contractor who says he was tortured during a nine-month imprisonment in Iraq.
The lawsuit lays out a dramatic tale of the disappearance of the then-civilian contractor, an Army veteran in his 50s whose identity is being withheld from court filings for fear of retaliation. Attorneys for the man, who speaks five languages and worked as a translator for Marines collecting intelligence in Iraq, say he was preparing to come home to the United States on annual leave when he was abducted by the U.S. military and held without justification while his family knew nothing about his whereabouts or even whether he was still alive.

Well, I've had my excitement for the day...
Nothing like driving at 4:00 a.m. on the 405, very light traffic and listening to music... freeway bending to the left, I'm in the carpool lane which is open to general traffic until 5:00... and around the bend is a pair of headlights rushing to met me!
I quickly move right... the oncoming car moves also across the lanes.
"Pick a FUCKING LANE!" I say out loud (pretty sure I was yelling)... and we pass each other separated by one lane.
I pull all the way to the right and stop, reaching for my cellphone. Just as I grab the phone from my pack, a State Trooper also comes around the bend. I look in the rear view mirror and can see more light coming up the freeway behind in the distance, with other cars trying to get out of the way of this asshole. I think the "pack" then moved off the freeway on an exit ramp - wrong way of course.
Coffee? Naw, I'm good for now...

Thanks, I'll ask. This problem has gotten me a fair bit of trouble at work, and it really needs to be addressed before I return. I'll see what my doctor says.

Note that there doesn't seem to be a denial of at least the fact of the "containment".
It would be hard to deny. But his claim of contact with a conveniently dead hero (and Abdul-Sattar Abu Risha was a hero for leading the Anbar Awakening) is rather suspicious. My guess is that the NCIS had more on him than he'll admit, but could not talk about it due to secrecy.

I think saying that Rumsfeld personally directed all this is a bit much, and there seemed to be some possibly conspiracy-minded bits in there that could all be figments of his imagination; but it will all come out in discovery if the lawsuit makes it that far.

Agreed. The Supreme Court recent ruling was unanimous, as the article says. My guess is that her rationale is that Rumsfeld is responsible because he approved the measures used.

Rough day at work yesterday...got to see first hand what it feels like to get thrown under the bus. That's some seriously fucked up shit. Probably my worst day ever - worse than when I got fired, even. The good news, though, is I've learned that I can't trust any of the other managers, and that they will, any time they feel it's expedient, use me and my team as a scapegoat. Ahh...teamwork. It's a wonderful thing.
It's good to get fucked over. Builds character. I don't know if I'd go that far. Sometimes people decide to play the lottery with the court system in the hope that their adversary would rather settle than let all the details come out in court, even if their own skeletons in the closet are no less vile. Software patent trolls do this all the time; they file lawsuits against companies who infringe in the hope of obtaining a settlement and license agreement, gambling that their opponent won't press the issue and get the patents invalidated.

But I will use the metaphor from my comment to D_F above about cutting the brakes. I'm good at what I do and I have a crack-team of engineers under me. I just need to organize my shit a bit better so the next time some other manager tries to yank a project mid-stream and say it's because I didn't provide the support, I can rightly tell him to go fuck himself and find another excuse.

So I got a call from the local police last night... (That's a great way to start a story!)
Last week my 18yr old SiL told me the local pd wanted to have a word with her. Short version of her story: Went to big party, laptop turned up missing, cops wanted to talk to everyone there (60 people or so). I had her watch the "Flex your rights" video about dealing with the police and the video from the law professor at the University of Virginia "Never speak to the police".
Cops called her last night wanting to know when she would be coming in to talk to him and she said "Never". He responded "Fine, I'll just put out a warrant. See you in court". She told him "good luck with that".
So then the officer called me. I have no idea how he got my number but he wanted me to talk her into coming in to talk to him. I patiently explained he was barking up the wrong tree since I'm the one who told her never speak to the police especially if she hadn't done anything wrong. He hung up on me. I didn't even get a chance to yell "Down with the Man!" or anything.

At 9:09 a.m. three juveniles attending a camp at the university reported seeing a white male, 6 feet tall, with light brown hair outside of New Residence Hall East holding what may have been a handgun.
They say the weapon was covered by a cloth or covering of some sort. He was walking fast in the direction of the volleyball courts. He was wearing a blue and white striped shirt (stripes were vertical), gray shorts and brown sandals. The subject had no facial hair or glasses.
Officers responded immediately to the area but found no one matching the description. Police have encountered no other witnesses reporting this individual or anything suspicious. Law enforcement officers from VTPD, Blacksburg PD, Christiansburg, PD, and Montgomery County Sheriff's Office are patrolling the campus, continuing to look for the subject.

It's a hell of a note, though, when people have to take as much care as those vids suggest just so they don't get in trouble for something they didn't do. But as I've found out, one has to approach any sort of police investigation with some amount of wariness, at least until you can be certain you're not suspected of anything.

It's called a "Material Witness Warrant". If the case amounts to Grand Theft and you refuse to speak to the police at all, then they can in cases obtain such a warrant in order to take you into custody and obtain the information they need. If it looks like a situation where they can do that, then you need to talk to a lawyer and then go in to see the police with said lawyer.

Morning all. Intriguing story about Christine Lagarde's role in a case that eventually awarded a large (285 million euro) payout to the somewhat* shady Bernard Tapie (football fans will remember him as the owner of Olympique Marseille when they bought the European Cup). The money came from the public since it involved a dispute between Tapie and a state-owned bank.
Tapie is a prominent supporter of Sarkozy of course, and Lagarde was his finance minister at the time of the settlement. Nice to see that the money/politics/business roundabout doesn't stop at the US border!

Interesting story in the NYT about GOP donors. The current crop is looking to exploit the GWB donor lists, and they're finding trouble.
What's interesting is that McCain didn't cultivate his own donors and instead relied on many of the same Bush donors who held out until after the field was settled:
And some large bundlers, unsatisfied with the presidential field, are choosing to place their bets with the party’s Congressional wing or with independent expenditure groups, which offer them the ease of writing a single check instead of the grinding work of wrangling contributions from dozens of friends and business associates.“Nobody is inheriting any kind of apparatus left over from the Bushes at all,” said Ray Washburne, a Dallas entrepreneur and former Bush Ranger who is backing Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor. “Everything’s going to have to be recreated. There are new players who want to play, and there are other people tired and done.”
More of Mr. Bush’s former supporters could still emerge later in the race or after the party settles on a nominee, as many Rangers and Pioneers did for Senator John McCain of Arizona, the nominee in 2008. Some may be awaiting the entry into the presidential race of Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, though some longtime Bush supporters said there was relatively little overlap between Mr. Bush’s network of financial supporters and the one built by Mr. Perry, a powerhouse fund-raiser in his own right.

As I said, forget about major recovery until businesses are more certain of conditions. The toxic asset issue is still an issue, though it's been reduced, and the political fighting in Washington also makes businesses nervous. Facing an uncertain tax and regulatory environment, most are choosing to just sit on their cash for now.

I don't think it was 2006. At the Christmas party for the company I worked for in 2007, we were told we had 5 years of work lined up. I was out in July 2007. Don't get me wrong, it came fast, but contracts were signed by people who kinda knew what they were doing.

Gonna have to test out my "hobo mode" any day now. Argh. Was being naive thinking that this summer would be another "summer of recovery." Obviously we need to forget that. I feel like I'm repeating myself from years past. Again we will have another crappy fall and holiday season sales will be close to suckage. This is year three since the Meltdown of 2008. Almost. I'm sure it started before that and perhaps in 2006 making it 5 years or more. This is The Great Recession.
Rural New Mexico is usually a couple years behind the rest of the country in terms of the economy. It's the equivalent of early 2009 here. The future is not so bright.

Not so much. If they though Obama's reelection was a certainty, they'd have some better insight with which to make decisions. It is possible that some business leaders don't want a full-fledged recovery, in order to prevent Obama from taking credit for it. But that's too conspiratorial for my tastes and I think that theory incorrect.

I would have to agree with the first part. As far as tax and regulatory perhaps with some industries like the petroleum industry. But they've had almost a whole decade of nearly stable tax environment. Including having had overseas tax shelters many of which continue to this day. The cash as you know is there. No, Dark. It's not the tax or regulatory environment. It's mostly uncertainty about the actual market, i.e., consumers, and the fact that we're cutting spending in the middle of a recession, which means the recession will deepen and consumer spending will go down.
The blackmail over the debt ceiling has scared the shit out of everyone, because the GOP is putting politics way ahead of the economy or the deficit on every level. If they were honestly going after the deficit, that'd be one thing, but instead they're just reducing spending, mindlessly.

The tax positions in the US are clear through the expiration of the extended Obama cuts in 2013. That gives roughly 2 years of guidance on tax positions. Government spending is also roughly known for the ongoing fiscal year and part of next. So I'd put that down as less of a factor on business sitting on the sidelines than other factors.
Uncertainty in the bond markets and the stock market are more of a driver as to why businesses aren't expanding and/or are sitting on larger cash reserves. Jitters about the overseas stability of countries like Italy and Greece are a factor - and worries that the problems could spread to other markets is a factor.
The real estate market in the US is a major reason businesses aren't doing well; it's a key driver to so many different industries that it's having a ripple effect that will be felt for years to come. Some regions are seeing growth, but it's anemic on a national level compared to what's necessary for a stable market (when looking at inventory, new builds, existing home sales, etc.) And in those markets where there is growth and/or demand for new housing, developers are having a tough time obtaining the necessary credit even with all the government intervention in the credit markets to date.

File that under "Not going to happen". Even if the GOP was composed entirely of Lindsey Graham and John McCain types and the Democrats were composed of Diane Feinstein and Herb Kohl types, that would not happen. Because even there there is a fundamental disagreement about the size, and on some matters the proper role, of government. Yep. Government workers pay taxes; buy homes and cars; purchase goods and services. And so on. It's actually a good return on the money. What I find ironic is that some of these very same people were behind the creation of "big government" with the massive expansion of "fortress America" and huge departments like Homeland Security; SWAT teams in almost every town; other law enforcement expansions; War on Drugs; the proverbial war machine; etc. But I suppose the same applies with people that work in those agencies. That they pay taxes; buy homes and cars; purchase goods and services. And so on.

I'm not naive enough to think that will happen. However, I think it will evolve into it's own restructuring if social evolution is a constant. Evolve or perish. If not it looks to me like most people won't be able to adapt so we're looking at "adapt or perish." Given the choice I think most people would choose to evolve rather than continuing down this road of "business as usual" which will lead to recession for while America lasts. It's like how we created the housing bubble. It didn't happen by accident. It was created by government and bank policy. Things have to change otherwise we'll just create other bubbles in the future that eventually burst.

FAA shutdown at heart is about whether Democrats or Republicans get to call the shots

"WASHINGTON (AP) - On the surface, the partial shutdown of the Federal Aviation Administration is about whether to cut $16 million in air service subsidies, a pretty small amount in this town. The down real estate market is in the pits. They are building some new homes though around the area that I'm currently located. I imagine these were planned pre October of 2008 considering the long process involved in this state. There is still, oddly enough, a surplus of homes when you consider previous build outs and foreclosures.

Not really. The people Obama appointed to the NLRB did indeed change a long-standing union election rule and change it to the airlines' disadvantage. Given that, plus Democratic support for card-check, one must arrive at the conclusion that Democrats wanted to move things on behalf of the unions. The GOP is acting to thwart a move that they see as giving the unions an unfair advantage.

The surplus depends on where you live. So much of it was built on speculation and flipping that it sits in places that have no need for such development now. Yet, places where there are a strong need are having trouble meeting demand (and which is supporting a level of pricing close to the peak). NYC metro area, which is largely built out and lacks additional land for new major development, has rezoned and opened up some areas for new development, but the process is dragged out by the lack of credit financing.

That was the new rule. The airlines hate it, though, because it hands the advantage to the unions, since those who are pro-union tend to be the ones most committed to voting and it reduces the number of votes the union needs to get.
The airlines and GOP do have a legit case. The old rule had been in place for a long time, and with the airlines still losing money, I can't imagine its a good idea to increase their labor costs.

Only those votes actually cast would be counted.
Exactly. If you don't vote it's your loss. Imagine applying this to regular voting? So candidate "A" gets 40,000 votes in State "X" yet candidate "B" gets 0 votes. However, there are 400,000 eligible voters in State "X". Therefore since 400,000 - 40,000 = 360,000 candidate "B" wins! Weird.

re: #362 RogueOne
FTFY! The fight is over a change to the voting regs. Repubs say it should stay as it is and dems say it should be changed.
Yes, the republicans want to count a non-vote as a no vote. Do you think that's fair? The NMB has already changed the regulation to only count actual votes.
At issue is a method of voting for union members. In the past, in union votes, all members were counted as having voted, even if they didn’t vote. A non-vote was counted as a “no.” Under the new regulations passed by the National Mediation Board, only actual votes count. The Republicans don’t like that, so they are using a totally unrelated issue to stall funding for the Federal Aviation Administration.
The public issue is subsidies for small airports. The Republicans claim the small airports are a drain on our over-extended budget. But without the appropriation for the FAA, the Federal government is not getting the $30 million a day in airline ticket taxes. The 16 airports in question receive a total of $14 million in subsidies yearly, and the ones targeted for closure are primarily in Democratic districts. That allowed Rep. John Mica, Republican of Florida, to claim that the FAA appropriation is being held up to protect Democratic pork.
[Link: lezgetreal.com...]
30 million a day tax revenue loss, vs 14 million a year in subsidies plus a loss of 74,000 jobs. Hmmm...what is the right thing to do here?

Strange. Not voting treated as a no vote? That doesn't make sense to me. If you don't vote in this instance that's a "yes" vote. One man. One vote.
The elections for airlines and unions is different than other companies. Instead of unionizing one location, railroads and airlines have to be unionized throughout their territory. Last year they changed the way the rules had worked for 75 years and the repubs aren't happy about it.

Not exactly - since the lack of a vote is not an affirmation.
The similarity would be in terms of referendum and ballot measures, not the election of candidates in office.
Say you want a proposition to increase property taxes to build a new ballpark (see Long Island's attempt to build a new arena for the Islanders). You get 10% turnout, and it passes (in reality, it lost even with the 10% turnout). However, under the union rule, it would lose because all those nonvotes became no votes.

The controlling law is the Railway Labor Act, not the National Labor Relations Act. FDR (correctly) expanded its jurisdiction to cover airlines. The reason is that unlike steelworkers, for example, a airline pilot or flight attendant goes from place to place within a airline's are of operations. Thus, a single set of rules is needed for each class of employee in order to allow the airline to function and the rules unionization reflect that.

LaHood exhorts lawmakers to pass FAA extension
Washington (CNN) -- Mark DePlasco, one of the many furloughed Federal Aviation Administration employees, is financially devastated by the lack of a paycheck and is desperately trying to juggle his bills.
His predicament has prompted Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to prod vacationing American lawmakers to interrupt their breaks, get back to work and pass a temporary funding measure that would put thousands of FAA and airport construction workers back on the job.
The Democratic-led Senate went on summer recess Tuesday without approving what would have been the 21st short-term funding extension for the FAA. The Republican-led House previously passed a short-term extension but included some changes opposed by Democrats.
On Thursday, LaHood scolded lawmakers to return and pass the extension. He says failure to do so effectively lays off 4,000 FAA employees and 70,000 construction workers, among others.
"They talk a lot about jobs. They give good speeches about it. I want them to walk the walk," said LaHood, a former Republican House member from Illinois. "Put hard-working Americans to work so they can get a paycheck just like Congress is receiving on their vacations."
The FAA has been partially shut down for more than a week. LaHood said "safety is not compromised" and "never will be compromised."
"Thousands of people are boarding planes. They will arrive safely today because our people are on their jobs doing the jobs that they know how to do, which is making sure that flying is safe."
Shout out here to Sec. LaHood, a fellow Illinois Republican.

First They Came for the Light Bulbs
When she arrived in St. Paul as a state senator, Bachmann brought those views with her. In a committee hearing in 2003 to discuss a clean energy bill, Bachmann broached the subject of Agenda 21. The term "sustainability" can have radical connotations, she warned, in the "brave new world of energy conservation," and voted for an amendment to remove the language.
As Bachmann explained to a perplexed chamber, sustainability, as defined by UN agreements like Agenda 21 and the UN Biodiversity treaty, would mean an end to resource extraction as we know it. "Last year in one of our committees, we had a guy come in and talk about the sustainable way of life," she said. "And he gave the definition of sustainable and it struck me as kind of odd. He said that what sustainable means is that we've already taken everything out of the earth that we're going to take out."
And then Bachmann brought up a now familiar topic. "We already have all of the light bulbs that we need to have in the earth," she recalled the expert saying. "We don't need to make any more light bulbs. And so I'm thinking, 'You mean for all time? And that's part of sustainability, is for all time we already have the light bulbs that we need and apparently we'll change filaments as they go out.'"

OK. Get out your hurl buckets!
If she wins in Iowa and can start profiling herself as the party's "front runner", nobody in the GOP is going to want to risk criticizing her. Remember what happened to Karl Rove when he dared call Christine O'Donnel's qualifications into question...

Alex Jones warns of "orgy of mass murder"
In a later segment on August 2 Jones responds to a caller suggesting he was scared to death about what the future holds for his children telling him: "We're just approaching the event horizon of the orgy of mass murder and death." Growing increasingly agitated, Jones started screaming about how the government has "robot helicopters with airborne Ebola and nerve gas waiting in spray quadrants to kill everybody. That's who runs America. OK? Total psychopathic, 110-percent mack daddy murderers!"

"They want Americans to take transit and move to the inner cities. They want Americans to move to the urban core, live in tenements, [and] take light rail to their government jobs. That's their vision for America."
