Thais take their royals serious.

Thai kingship has a lot of ritual elements based in Hindu understanding of sacred kingship...the king is a paternal figure, but also a microcosm of an ordered civilization. Insulting him implicitly insults everybody. Also, the Chakri dynasty consistently kept Thailand's ass out of the fire up until WWII--fighting off Burma, continuously implementing reforms and re-structuring governance, and pulling off the massive-balls maneuver of avoiding becoming a colonial client state by ceding part of their empire. As absolute monarchs go, they're a pretty good bunch.

And Mongkut has been played by Yul Brenner and Chow Yun Fat, so there's no way I'm dissing himself.

These Flammpanzers were used to great effect, as they often were against infantry with no tanks of their own to protect them.

I've visited the battlefield at Arnhem, and walked across the bridge. The West bank of the branch of the Rhine spanned by the John Frost* bridge is low. It's not built up---evidently it's a flood plain and not safe to build on. The East bank is higher, sporting some (for the Netherlands) impressive hills that give perfect observation onto the entire W. bank.

The river is a serious water obstacle. The E. bank is city, if not exactly Stalingrad. The bridge itself still stands, exactly as it was then apart from little amenities like new lighting.

The general landscape W of the town is very flat, with roads elevated above the general lie of the land for drainage. Off road movement for vehicles would be difficult at any time of year, and all but impossible if it rained. No wonder the operation was a failure. The Arnhem bridge was several bridges distant from the start line, and the British armored units assigned to the relief mission were played out. Not that they were cowards---they'd won the battle of El Alamein. But dash and verve were no longer in their repertoir.

(John Frost was the commanding officer of the lone British airborne battalion that made it to the vicinity of the bridge from the drop zone several miles to the North. The others got tied up in city fighting on the outskirts of Arnhem. His unit was overwhelmed and forced to surrender. He survived and was later the senior British commander in NATO. The Dutch renamed the bridge in his honor.)

Dr. C. PETER WAGNER: Japan, as a nation, is one of the nations of the world which has consciously, openly invited national demonization. The sun goddess visits him in person and has sexual intercourse with the emperor. It's a very, very powerful thing. So the emperor becomes one flesh with the sun goddess, and that's an invitation for the sun goddess to continue to demonize the whole nation.

Since the night that that - the present emperor slept with the sun goddess, the stock market in Japan has gone down. It's never come up since.

That's beyond derpitude and into straight-jacket territory.

Time to repeat my question from a while ago: Is the meme that he is the candidate with the most donations from veterans true, and if so, why is that the case?

It's not quite true.

[Link: abcnews.go.com...]

The center tallied money from donors who list the Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy and National Guard as an employer. Overall, these donations are miniscule: Obama got 44 contributions worth about $27,000 and Paul 23 for about $19,300. Republican John McCain, an Iraq war supporter and Vietnam prisoner of war, was third with about $18,500 from 32 donors.

Military officers don't donate money to politicians but if they do, they keep it quiet.

I say it's a meme. The number of donations and money is minuscule when you consider how many are on active duty or are civilian employees of the military. I think people would be surprised to learn how many military members lean libertarian.

From what I've read the jury had 2 options and picked the "she wasn't involved" choice.

I've been following it since she was convicted. There were some major holes in the prosecutors case and it looked to me like she was railroaded. OTOH, there were some pretty big holes in her story too. I would suggest that her next boyfriend sleep with one eye open just to be sure.

On the no DP, I am completely in agreement. Jurors have been proven uninformed, misinformed, and/or biased far too many times. Demanding death reaches a level of hubris far exceeding what a normal prideful Greek would reach before Zeus would zap them with a bolt of lightning.

Points for what programming book mentions hubris, Zeus and being zapped. Hint, it was in the glossary.

Hmmm...

The major tobacco manufacturers discovered that polonium was part of tobacco and tobacco smoke more than 40 years ago and attempted, but failed, to remove this radioactive substance from their products. Internal tobacco industry documents reveal that the companies suppressed publication of their own internal research to avoid heightening the public’s awareness of radioactivity in cigarettes. Tobacco companies continue to minimize their knowledge about polonium-210 in cigarettes in smoking and health litigation. Cigarette packs should carry a radiation-exposure warning label.

A "cure" may most likely involve gene therapy to target the vulnerability to cancer. But then, I get most of my possible treatments from sc-fi. The authors tend to come up with some pretty good ideas. The problem is getting from here to there. It is going to take a lot of research on the genome and how it functions.

From Debbie Schluessel's comment section:

Muslims such as Alaa Alsaegh are the real ‘tiny minority’ as far as Muslims go. If they had indeed been 80% or so of the population, there would have been so many of them that the 20% thugs that would have been around would have been scared to do things like they did to Mr Alsaegh. So don’t bother using him as the template within which to fit even most Muslims – just doesn’t work.

I agree w/ Rick S and Ferdinand King that this is why all Muslims ought to be expelled from America. Yeah, doing that would also get rid of people like Mr Alsaegh, but they are such a tiny minority that while it’s regrettable that they’d have to suffer as well, it’s not worth basing the policy on Muslims on people like them, unrepresentative as they are. Moreover, there are enough taquiyya experts among Muslims who’ll do things like this (I’m not saying Mr Alsaegh is one) in order to work their way in this country, and later perpetuate some outrage or another.

Chris Christie, who hasn't addressed the press in New Jersey in over a week, just added a 1 p.m. press conference to his schedule.

True enough, but it also makes him undesirable to the party base. They're looking for somebody who not simply sips the Tea Party kool-aid, but is chugging it with gusto. And he's simply not it, because he's actually willing to stand up and call the loons out.

Is Obama having some problems within his own party?

President Obama’s relations with Senate Democratic leaders are deteriorating along with his poll numbers.

With Obama’s approval ratings at record lows and the 2012 electoral map favoring Senate Republicans, the president and Senate Democrats are, in many ways, on divergent paths. Vulnerable Democrats from red states see Obama as impeding their chances of winning reelection, while the president often seems aloof to their concerns.

Obama, focused on winning a second term, has distanced himself from Congress altogether, at times not making the distinction between Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill.

There have been recent flare-ups between the White House and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and his deputies, 13 months before the 2012 elections, when control of the Senate is up for grabs.

The proximate causes of friction can seem slight, such as a recent breach of protocol, which left Senate Democratic leaders grumbling.

Obama left his party’s top senators, who had assembled for a conference call, hanging on the phone for nearly 20 minutes before National Economic Council Director Gene Sperling came on the line with a seemingly vague notion of what the call was supposed to be about, Democratic sources said.

The White House and Reid’s office did not comment for this article.

Romney's had months to run away from his record, like excusing Romneycare as something that works only at the state level and not the federal level. Actually, a large part of Cain's recent ascent is that his powercenter is Georgia/Florida. Unlike much of the rest of the nation, in that area he's got a significantly higher recognition factor among the tea-party base. It's largely driven by his regular (wingnut) radio talk show that plays in the region.

So with Perry's faux pas, people fleeing went to someone they sorta knew and perceived as being "one of them".

For what it's worth, Cain seems to be getting ready to throw this opportunity away. He's announced plans to slow down on the campaign trail for a month and talk up his book, instead. That, instead of seizing the opportunity to be The One; something he's in better position to do than almost all the rest given his background.

Dogs decide they have to go out at 8 --so much for sleeping in.

I sit down at the computer and find I have exactly 2 cigarettes.

You're right, he won't back down, and the Tea Party will crucify him for that. They want ideological purity, and he's the antithesis of that. If anything, his run would prompt questions of why he's suddenly popular as a candidate when John Huntsman has been running for weeks and gotten little attention.

re: #239 NJDhockeyfan

Rasmussen has him and Obama in a dead heat, and Christie isn't even running yet. If he decides to get in expect a real race in 2012.

First: Rasmussen? Thumb on the scale Rasmussen? Nate Silver (for one) made the interesting observation that for the past half-decade, Rasmussen's early polling is significantly different (and leaning Republican) than any of his competitors. As the elections get closer his numbers get closer, usually by HIS numbers getting lower. I think for this reason that Rasmussen at more than a month out is trying to sell his candidate, not analyze where his candidate sits.

Second: So? Not running, no real exposure, he sits at a dead heat. So did Perry during the month or so prior to announcing. Let's see what happens if and when he puts himself on the firing line. Me, I think his local history will make him either unable to win the nomination or unable to win the general, and maybe both.

If Obama is going to tank on his own record and the GOP candidate is going to win, then yes, the Tea Party had decided who the next President was going to be because they decided who the GOP candidate was going to be.
If Obama is going to win because the alternative GOP candidate is so horrid, the Tea Party is going to have made Obama President by deciding who the GOP candidate was going to be.

Working premise: Tea Party dominates GOP primaries.
Tentative conclusion: Therefore, Tea Party will decide who next office holder is going to be.

For what it's worth, I said that anybody who hadn't entered by mid-September wasn't worth thinking about. Even with Christie I think that.

The deadline for filings begin at the end of this month. Failing to hit some of the early states puts a candidate on Giuliani's strategic path.

The only reason Christie (and apparently Palin) can still consider this last-minute entry is because they have a little name recognition and (more importantly) there's no solid front-runner already in the race. Despite rumblings I don't think Sarah will run. Christie might, but he's still got three months to face the bear. He's going to be beat up by his party for his liberal positions. He's going to get beat up by the other side for some of his tea party-like actions. (Remember the train budget? How about the teacher fiasco? Neither are atypical.)

Romney is the frontrunner, but by now it's patently obvious that the anti-Romney portion of the party is dominant. If a viable candidate appears he will, by default, defeat Romney. If all that's present is the current morass there's an ugly but real possibility that the nominee will be selected at the convention. In my opinion, Christie does not rise above the morass.

Christie didn't work in the Obama Administration, Hunstman did.
Christie isn't a Mormon, Huntsman is (for those who think that being a Mormon is an automatic disqualifier for being President even though that is a biased and contra to federal law and qualifications to be President).

However, the most important difference:

Christie isn't in the race; Huntsman is, but you wouldn't know it from his polling.

Christie is the shiny alternative to the crapshow that the GOP and TP has put together. Now, Christie may end up being just as bad as the rest as he would have to curry favor with the same nutjobs who first proffered the likes of Bachmann and Perry and then turned on them when they realized just how nutty they were - or that they weren't sufficiently extreme in their positions. That remains to be seen.

Like I said above, Christie's negatives are out in the open and he's apologized for none of them. re: #271 kirkspencer

BTW, the Feds and NJ have ended up settling on the ARC tunnel funding - in favor of Christie.

The feds were demanding NJ repay $271 million for preliminary work done.

Christie, after getting slammed for spending $1 million to fight that - ended up getting a deal where the state has to repay $95 million over 5 years.

That's a far cry from $271 million owed - and it prevented NJ taxpayers from being on the hook for anywhere from $1 to $5 billion on overruns that were all but expected because NJ Transit can't contain costs if its existence depended upon it. The alternatives proposed - Gateway or the 7 line extension are preferable to ARC and would avoid some of the problems with ARC (no storage space for trains at end of run, same bottleneck of trains if one of the train tubes was disabled, etc.).

Well, can't give total credit to Romney, as it was Bachmann's digs at the HPV vaccine bit in the first debate that sent Perry to the mat. Granted, she fell victim herself to her own wingnuttery post-debate, but she helped set up the slams that were brought down on his head in the recent debate.

Perry was supposed to be the guy who stepped in and walked away with the nomination. Instead, he's only made Romney's position as heir-apparent all the more secure.

So today's Boston Globe has a nice opinion piece up on the 4 day old Occupy Boston protests.

And then you meet Eleanor Seigneur and Leah Barrows and you realize that what’s going on in Dewey Square is more complicated, more nuanced, than some would have you believe.

Seigneur is 42. Barrows is 40. Seigneur lives in Weymouth. Barrows lives in Roxbury. Seigneur is white. Barrows is black. Barrows is a Republican. Seigneur gives the Republicans credit only for getting people to vote for them against their own self-interest. They both have jobs. Seigneur is an accountant at an animal hospital. Barrows is an artist and author of “The Vampyre Cookbook.’’ They have young daughters. Seigneur’s is 6; Barrows’s is 8.

And they have found themselves on the grassy patch in Dewey Square the last few days because they know of no other way to express their dissatisfaction, their utter dismay, over how the concentration of power - money and media - has created two separate Americas, one increasingly rich, the other increasingly poor, with a middle class increasingly squeezed out.

Some the people involved in Occupy Boston have also been going after Bank of America for their foreclosure practices around Boston. My favorite tactic so far has been cleaning up foreclosed properties, bagging the waste and depositing the bags at BoA branches and the president's house.

Found out that the gaming company I've been with since June doesn't have the money to hire me on. I can stay here as an unpaid intern or look for another job. My boss was upset about it. She said she'd love to keep me, but they just can't.

They offered to use their connections to other game studios and to folks they know to help me land a job somewhere else here in town, so I jumped on that. I've already given the HR person my resume and the job description I wanted for myself, and both she and my boss are going to talk to the CEO and to the rest of senior management for recommendations and to help me land interviews. Chris Christie Not Running for President

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will not run for president, according to a source with direct knowledge of the governor’s thinking.

Christie has long said he’s not ready to run , but had reconsidered in recent weeks and there was speculation he could make a late entrance into the race. Christie thrilled conservatives with a speech last week to Republicans at the Reagan Library in California. And his status as a governor in the blue state of New Jersey made him seem electable in a general election against President Obama.

Dunno if it's good or bad.

It's good for Romney because it means he's now virtually uncontested for the nomination, barring a sudden resurgence from the peanut gallery.

It's bad for the Tea Party because it now means that, after weeks of finding other candidates wanting, they've either got to decide to prop up somebody they're less-than-impressed with or hold their nose and support Mittens.

Sorry to hear that. Hang in there.

I'll be okay. Most of the folks in senior management around here have long careers in gaming and know a lot of folks here in town that could get me interviews I'd never land on my own. With any luck, something will turn out in my favor. Who knows? This could turn out for the best.

Still, in the short term it looks like I'll have to borrow more money from the university to pay my bills for this month and have rent for November. I'm really not looking forward to that conversation with my financial advisor. :-/

For Obama?

Depends on the next 12 months. Personally, I think it's a plus for him, because as noted above, Christie would have been hard to beat in the general. Now, barring some major economic, domestic, or foreign disaster, he's fairly safe. And, if the nomination goes to the convention, it gives him several months head start on whoever gets the brass ring.

Today officially sucks. :(

I'm upset. I'm hurt. But I get it, and I'm not angry. It's a small company that's really not making money so they just don't have the ability to hire someone else on.

Still, it sucks. Blah.

That's a shame, Lidane. I know you were hoping to stay on there. Good luck with your search.

Zedushka smokes and he knows I hate it. He is banned from smoking in the house so he has made himself a "homeless guy's camp" in the garage where my new car lives. I have caught him sneaking cigarettes in the bathroom. He thinks that if he keeps the window open that I won't notice.

And he also drinks gallons of Coca Cola even though he is a diabetic.

I don't know what to do to keep him from offing himself with cigarettes and soda. Telling him that it's bad for his health just pisses him off.

LOL, a friend of my husband had one of those garage rooms. He carpeted 1/2 the garage, but a heater in, had a recliner, remote, TV and a fridge, kitchen cabinets for his "toys" tools, etc. He parked on the driveway and his wife had the other half of the garage.

I didn't think he'd jump in the race. Doesn't mean that someone wont try a draft Christie movement down the road - particularly if no one candidate emerges as a contender to Obama. He might even work into the conversation as a ticket balancer as a VP contender.

Still, I think he's looking down the line to 2016, when he's got a free field (thinking that Obama wins reelection with the current crop of GOP contenders), has completed a term and change as NJ governor, and can make a strong run then.

Indeed, Christie has a better chance of being accepted as a VP candidate than as a contender for the top spot. He'd do less damage to his own reelection chances back home by taking the spot, plus on the far chance that the GOP did win the presidency, it'd set him up for a potential presidential run of his own down the line.

The anti-Romney voters appear to be about 70% of the Republican party. At the same time, the alternatives are tanking badly.

If Romney continues to get only about 30% of the votes in the actual primaries, because of the changed methodology it means he won't have enough delegates to win by the time the conference rolls around. His only hope of avoiding that is also his greatest fear: the race turns into a two-person race instead of a race between a dwarf and several pygmies. With "only" two candidates, the delegates will split and inevitably one will get over half. The fear is that because the anti-Romney segment is so large he'll be an also-ran again.

I figure we'll know after Super Tuesday at the latest, and there's a fair chance we'll see enough withdrawals in the next couple of months and know sooner.

But it's all guesswork -- anybody who tells you it's certain is a fool or a liar.

True enough, though I think there's some weight to the predictions of this going to the convention. Romney's the most electable in the general of them all, but while the base hates him, they're either noncommittal about the other contenders or split amongst them. I'm expecting some sort of "compromise ticket" at the convention, with a lot of backdoor negotiating over who leads the ticket.

I can not begin to tell you how hard it is to quit cigarettes. Yes nicotine is fiendishly addictive, yes there is the social aspect of it and the way it becomes habit. All of that conspires. But the thing that non-smokers don't get is that once you've gotten off of them, and gone through the sweats and the irrational desire to eat people and use their femurs as toothpicks as a legitimate response to petty annoyances... the thing that non smokers don't get is that if and when after a week or a month or even a year after you quit and you do break down and have "just one" it is like sex. It is that intoxicating - and then boom you are right back at it.

I am not even close to defending an addiction I fought with a lot. Of course it is terrible for you. Of course cigarettes are horrible and the smoker knows this. He already feels horrible about it and then tries to only have them a little and on the sly. Nothing will make him feel worse than a woman he loves telling him how bad it is (he knows) that you love him (he knows) tears (he sees) and the frustration that he feels because he was already hiding it.

So, it was a race between Perry and Romney to be the hair-apparent?

Good for you!

I fortunately started smoking after college. Unfortunately, it has been a slug fest of quitting and then slipping up again since then. The longest I have quit for was about a year and a half, the second longest about 9 months and then I have had multiple 3-6 month stints before getting back to it.

It sucks. I hate the way it makes my clothing smell. I hate everything about it - except of course for the nicotine and the fact that it really does chill me out after a stressing.

It really sucks.

I quit over a year ago without any problems. I was cig-free for 3 months. After my seizure in Tennessee and waking up 3 days later in the hospital, all I wanted was a cigarette. I had one and that was enough. When I got home my mother was there to help take care of me. She smokes and kept handing them to me. I've been smoking ever since.

Funny, I was just thinking that the only time in the past year+ since I quit smoking that I really craved a ciggie butt was when I was in the hospital in February and got a report that I seriously didn't like. Fortunately, I came home to my e-cig and got past it without slipping back.

Poor, poor Bank of America.

The troubled bank, already besieged by multibillion-dollar lawsuits and massive financial losses, saw its stock fall more than 2 percent in late-morning trading. The shares have plunged almost 44 percent for the quarter, the worst performing in the Dow Jones industrial average by far. For the year, the stock is down 56 percent.

Now the bank faces a public-relations backlash.

The debit-card change has sparked fury on the Web and cable news channels. Consumers complained on message boards and in social media, vowing to take their business elsewhere.

BoA currently holds our mortgage. The wife and I talked last night about looking elsewhere. I have no compunctions about kicking BoA while they're down. :)

Get an e-cig. I'm telling ya, it's a wonderful thing. It addresses the physical behavior by giving you a toy to handle and the oral pleasure, That for me was a bigger thing than the nicotine addiction I think and why the e-cig has worked so well. Right now I'm puffing on a lovely spearmint flavored vapor that is so much nicer than tobacco smoke. It's also cheap, less than a tenth of what I was spending on smokes.

BoA are some serious fuckers. Some years ago, they lost one of my pay checks after I had deposited it, in person, to a person behind the counter. I had the receipt.

When I say lost, I mean they physically lost the check.

So they had credited my account because the teller punched it in, but then a few days later pulled the money out without telling me and caused a couple of things to bounce which of course led to overdraft fees and a whole bunch of hassle.

In the course of trying to clear that up, they tried to tell me that the receipt I held did not mean that they actually received my paycheck and argued with me about how nice they would be if they removed even one overdraft fee!

Well... let's just say they will never get my business again.

I checked the other day whether BoA was the source bank on any of my debit or credit cards. If they had been I would have dropped the account right then and there.

We build this whole infrastructure to handle electronic commerce*, save dealing with cash and checks all the time, and then once there is an difficulty the banks handled it like a cash cow to be milked or slaughtered at need.

The banks change the rules of the game as they go, and in a way it's a violation of a social contract. And they might perhaps be learning that certain things will involve a backlash. Or, which is probably more likely, all the banks will start charging and we'll be stuck once the initial round of upset ends.

* - And this was a convenience for both the banks and the consumers since it takes people, facilities, mail costs, etc. to deal with all the paper involved in processing checks.

I quit trying to quit. It wasn't worth the guilt/failure cycle.

I actually smoke less now.

Trying to do it during the hormonal turmoil of my present time of life is just stupid, IMHO. Meds don't help, the Patch didn't work. I quit trying.

I figure, I quit drinking alcohol, that's enough for one life-time.

BoA is the servicer of my mortgage. A short version of part of my sysiphean task.

Lost job 3 years ago. After a few months, applied for HAMP (home mortgage workout). Qualified. Sent paper. Wife's last name misspelled - close, but not the same as her actual (which is on original loan papers). Called BoA asked what to do? Lined through and corrected with Notary watching, we all signed. Rejected because we modified the paperwork.

For the past 2 and a half years I've been in the workout process. Every time we get the final papers with her name misspelled the same way. i've told them when they give solutions over the phone that unless it's fixed OR correction instructions are given to us in writing that we can't sign - notary won't accept wrong person by ID. I have to re-start the process every few months as there's a time limit. Oh, and three times a specialist has been assigned and has left the company before it's finished. Two of those, the specialist "lost the paperwork".

I get a weekly call telling me I'm overdue, and each call, even acknowledging it's their error, results in a hit to my credit rating. For three years now.

If BoA were to go up in a fire, I'd feel sorry for everyone at the bottom rung for losing a job and joining the ranks of unemployed. For the rest, I'd bring food to cook over the fire and savor the Banker-flavored meals for a long time.

Excerpt
WASHINGTON - New documents obtained by CBS News show Attorney General Eric Holder was sent briefings on the controversial Fast and Furious operation as far back as July 2010. That directly contradicts his statement to Congress.

On May 3, 2011, Holder told a Judiciary Committee hearing, "I'm not sure of the exact date, but I probably heard about Fast and Furious for the first time over the last few weeks."

I guess they couldn't get past a married woman who didn't take her husband's name. I tried in vain to get them to change it to my legal name but finally gave up. It was the name on deed that counted.

So a couple of years after I sold the house, I opened an account at a local Wells Fargo bank. They saw in their records someone with the same SS# and different last name. I told them what happened and that it was THEIR error. They insisted that I prove to them that I hadn't changed my name when I got married. How the hell do I prove a negative? Reasonable facsimiles as substitutes are important when it comes to kicking habits.

Soda is definitively easier to replace than smokes. With smokes, you just have to let go.

For me, it was made "easy" when I focused on what I actually needed to do in order to succeed kicking the addiction in the simplest way possible:

But if the bank pulled a series of stunts like that, I'd be raising holy hell and demanding heads on a platter - all while looking to another bank to process the refi under HARP (if you qualify). And I think the other bank would be amenable to doing it for you too.

Oh, and writing letters to your local reps - and newspapers - can spur them into action too.

Whatever route you take, good luck in taking BoA down a notch or 10.

No, it's not an impeachable offense. He has enough wiggle room to claim he was mistaken without perjuring himself before Congress or being brought up on obstruction charges.

There would have to be a whole lot more to bring Holder up on charges - such as paperwork initiating the program showing his signature and dated from that time period that contradicts his claims that he only heard about the program a few weeks ago.

Absent that, this kerfuffle doesn't have the legs the GOP thinks it should (or does).

437 BishopX  Tue, Oct 4, 2011 10:14:56am

So I just read the memo Holder got. It was a weekly briefing, 3 pages long, with 15 bullet points. The only unredacted bullet point is the fast and furious one. It reads:

Tuscon Gun Trafficking (D. Arizona): On October 27, the Organized Crime and Gang Section (OCGS) indicted eight individuals under seal relating to the trafficking of 228 firearms to Mexico. The sealing will likely last until another investigation, Pheonix-based "Operation Fast and Furious," is ready for takedown.

That's it. He heard the words once 9 months before he said he did. Big whoop.

Yeah.. Just like they were all angry at him for not getting involved with Libya, until he did and then they were against it... Or like the Reagan initiative of cap and trade that McCain/Palin ran on suddenly became cap and tax or how outing a secret operative (Valerie Plame) and lying about that is actual literal treason, except when they do it, and far less important than the president getting a BJ. OR, when they rewrite the clean air act with Haliburton loopholes and castrate the EPA at the cost of thousands of American lives and properties, and destroyed farmland and farm jobs but somehow claim to be protecting jobs.

Looks like a bunch of NYC area unions are jumping on the Occupy Wall Street bandwagon and will be marching with the Zuccotti Park protesters.

A Strong Economy for All, an umbrella group of labor and progressive groups including SEIU 1199, the Communications Workers of America, the UAW and Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Workers Union will march tomorrow afternoon. The larger coalition is also coordinating a 2 p.m. student walkout at college campuses around New York City.

For all the talk about anger and the protests spreading, it's a fraction of the number of protesters who came out against the Iraq war for any number of demonstrations, and while the media here in the NYC metro area fixates on the protests, the number of people involved is incredibly small - a couple hundred (or a few thousand on weekends), compared with 8 million living in NYC overall. Getting the unions involved could be a game-changed, but the protesters have to come up with a more coherent message than just being angry with Wall Street (even as the same unions have their funds managed by the same Wall Street bigwigs).

Exactly.

FWIW, looking at that memo, and given the context of the Congress questioning (when Holder was being asked specifically about the guns "walking", which the memo does not appear to mention at all), his explanation that he meant "I heard about the guns walking as a result of the Fast and Furious operation a few weeks ago" sounds pretty plausible, absent further evidence.

That's a very misleading statement. Yes, it can mean that but the more common and primary meaning when referencing an activity with sex is any sexual activity, not just intercourse. Take up a dictionary.

Narrowing the meaning to sexual intercourse is just a way to attempt to get away with nitty gritty without calling it by its appropriate umbrella term.

7-up doesn't (though it also doesn't use carbonic acid but instead uses a citric acid process).

That completely sucks. I haven't had to deal with BoA, but with Chase for my mortgage. The process has been mostly okay, but the rates have been on the high side of the average. We do all other banking through Chase, so it was convenient to have everything linked and it's a neighborhood branch.

I've tried - reread and see that it was only a partial list.

I suffer from the handicap of long-term unemployment. My retirement savings are about gone, which'll make this rather moot.

As for congressional... I'm in North Georgia. My representative is Tom Graves, and my Senators are Chambliss and Isakson. All have long and solid ties to the other side. Oh - and Georgia's laws are fun in regard to this. There's no court requirement for foreclosure, and I have to initiate the suit and prove that BoA wasn't a valid servicer to get relief, as a large servicer is by default considered valid when pursuing delinquent loans and foreclosures. gah. Sorry, there's more and I'm not going to kill this board to tell it. Just say that BoA is servicer not by my choice, and I will never willingly do business with them again.

Errr... it can be qualified. "Vaginal intercourse" works fine, for instance. And "sexual intercourse" of course already is a qualifier. And the other forms do not "need" a qualifier. If you assume that the people you are adressing only think of sexual intercourse as sex, then maybe. But then again, that is not the primary meaning of "sex". That really is just a narrowed down meaning created by people who want to try to get away with some forms of sex without calling it such.

You're a whole lot more familiar with your situation than I could possibly glean from your limited recap, but I would still suggest contacting newspapers like the Atlanta Journal Constitution, which tends to do pretty good investigative stuff - and BoA can't deal with even more negative press. Sounds like you've got a pretty compelling story for the paper to take up.

Also, don't completely write off politicians even if they're from the other party - after all they don't know who else you might know and you might get help in the form of contacts or other information to help you get through to the right parties in BoA to address things. You might have still better luck with your local state reps - they might have still more contacts or information to deal with this kind of situation.

Errr... it can be qualified.

But how much of this "qualifying" is because of Lewinskygate? Back in the 90's sex was sex--lose your virginity, get pregnant, sex.

That is some excellent advice. A well placed letter can have a dramatic result. Though it's certainly not in the realm of seriosity (I just made that word up - I like it) as your mortgage situation, I had a problem with a nazi HOA a few years ago. It just got out of hand with getting threatening letters over the dumbest little things like a small patch of mildew under the second story eaves that they told me I would be fined like $200 a day for. (I wasn't alone - they sent that same letter to almost everyone in the subdivision. It's Texas, sub-tropics - mildew happens.) I finally got infuriated and wrote to my local state congress person about our abusive and harassing HOA. Man, was I surprised about 2 weeks later when I got a letter of apology from the HOA! Never got threatened by them again.

Ah. I wasn't clear. I've spoken with my federal and state reps. I'm not guessing how they'll react, I know because we've already walked that path. I've also spoken with the news. The AJC is a lot more interested in the Atlanta versions of this tale, not those next to the Chattanooga border. The Chattanooga news media are sorta interested, except most of their business and interest is Tennessee and I'm, well, on the Georgia side of the border.

I should note that BoA has put itself in a bit of a hard place. If they push on to foreclosure I'm at the point I have to file for bankruptcy. At the bankruptcy hearing I'll submit as part of the cause the whole HAMP process, at which point the court will ask BoA why they didn't do their job with the paperwork and so forced me to bankruptcy. It's not something BoA really wants to face.

Again, there are three years of process, some involving attorneys, all of which has repeated at least twice. I called it sysiphean for a reason. Feel free to toss suggestions, but recognize there's a decent chance I've already done it at least once.

Oh, and I should point out that I'm depressed because I'm still unemployed. Part of "getting out of this" requires a regular income.

re: #340 LudwigVanQuixote

You do stuff from home to help in little ways, because that is being a mensch, but you remember that you are not getting paid by them. Few people can afford to work for free and they know this.

I left early today because, well, I'm upset. Plus I have class at 3 anyway. Still, I wrote to my boss and said that even though I understood that a permanent position wasn't in the cards, I'm still willing to help them out in the meantime so they're not left in a lurch.

I offered to work from home on Mondays-Thursdays and come in Fridays, at least until I got a paid position. I also talked up the company, saying I'd had a good experience, liked the work I did and the people, and said that I saw no reason to leave abruptly when I could still help out on the side as I looked for a job. She thanked me for the letter and my attitude on the whole thing and told me that the senior officers at the company all personally expressed interest in helping me out. She also said that they'd keep me in the loop for as long as I wanted to be a part of the team.

It still hurts, but I have a feeling this might just turn out okay. *crosses fingers*

He was killed by a gun given to a violent drug gang by the ATF. That is serious.

And if it hadn't been for "Fast and Furious", that cartel thug would have come unarmed.

Logic fail.

/late posting fail on my part...

P.S. Of course it is serious that a border patrol agent was killed. See my recent Pages for how I feel about them. And of course "Fast and Furious" was a stupid idea, but I don't think it was Holder's stupid idea.

@Lidane:

I'm a senior engineering manager for a game company subsidiary of a major entertainment company in San Diego. I'm in the process of growing my team from about 10 to 30 over the next few months. Server programmers, client guys (OpenGL and Flash), QA, tech writers, you name it.

If you're interested, shoot me a copy of your resume. We relocate if necessary. It's my name here @gmail.

Wow! Thanks! :)

Just FYI, so you don't think I'm a coder or programmer-- I'm more of a Marketing person, especially in terms of social media and online marketing, but I've taken courses in tech writing and I'm a long-time gamer, so we could speak the same language.

Will you be at GDC here in Austin next week? I'll be at the expo on Tuesday and Wednesday and we could talk in person, or I can e-mail my resume to you. Or both. It's all good. I don't graduate until next May, so I wouldn't be able to relocate right away, but I'd be willing to do it if I end up having a place at your company.
