Hillary Clinton won my state by 4%, and my county by 5 votes.

In other news, I have an actual lizard in my store. I don’t know where it is right now. It’s one of those little ones (5”?) that they call a fence lizard or a wall lizard, depending on where they find it. This one is a hall carpet lizard. I first saw it headed into my office. I turned it around and headed it into my back room where I have a bunch of dirty bikes and the trash and recycling. I found a beetle and released it in there too. And made a little puddle of water for them. I’m crazy, aren’t I.

I then posed a question about what his position on the Veterans Administration is. Let’s see what he says as the call goes on.

He is now talking about Sarah Root’s killer in a drunken street racing event caused by a undocumented immigrant. He was released by Homeland Security (this is an issue here in Western Nebraska). He fled after posting bond.

He is noting the outrage amongst senators on why this guy was allowed to post bond.

He says ICE said he was not a priority, but is now on the “most wanted list” though they believe he has already fled the country.

He is now going to move on to “pro-life” issues.

He wants to pass the “Born Alive Protection Act.” It has “bicameral” support.

Uygur said unlike other candidates, where “suspending” a run functionally means dropping out of the race, Sanders should reserve the right to re-enter the race in case Clinton is indicted over her use of email and a private server while serving as Secretary of State.

This sarcastic comment from a Chait thread is a hilarious summation of the Berni-or-bust mentality:

Unless we can accomplish absolutely every one of our policy goals with this single election, it’s not even worth trying. Progress isn’t a matter of making a series of accomplishments over time, it’s not an ongoing project—it’s a one-time-only event that at one fell swoop installs a completely just society, after which we never need trouble ourselves with this stuff again. That’s why I never vote for candidates who have some good points and some bad points but whose good points outweigh their bad points; I do not regard such candidates’ bad points as the price we must pay to elect a candidate who is on the balance good in a country where millions do not agree with me, but as corrupt lying sell-outs who are actually worse than candidates whose bad points outweigh their good points. That’s why I vote only for candidates who are perfect.

I doubt it. He wants to repeal the ACA. You know, because the marketplace has done so well.

Now addressing the EPA on the Waters of the US, complaining that the ditches and canals of Nebraska are already regulated by the state or counties, and the EPA is clueless about local issues.

He also claims the IX and X Amendments leave these issues to local control, talking about a rancher complaining “he doesn’t know who he voted for in the EPA; he can fire the three representative and two senators but not the EPA.”

The mentality of fanatics, be they political or religious, the world over.

I disagree. That’s the mentality of Progressive fanatics. Right Wing fanatics are the Rabid Rat that just keeps coming at you, the Terminator - “It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.”

The Tea Party got angry with the GOP Establishment for not giving them the pony they’d promised for decades. So they put up their own slate of candidates. Some won, some lost. Then they voted for the GOP Candidate, even if it wasn’t their guy.

Lather, rinse, repeat through 4 election cycles now. Now they’ve chosen the Nominee.

Progressives? If Bernie doesn’t win, they’re gonna take their dolls and dishes. They’re gonna sulk. They’re gonna, like my brother, go register Green, because ‘The Revolution won’t happen in the Democratic Party’.

Progressive fanatics are too lazy and easily discouraged. Tea Partiers? They just keep coming.

70 trillion dollars? What kind of math is he using for that? Throwing in Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid no doubt, even though those funds are segregated and paid for? Wish they’d show their work for coming up with this nonsense. Or is it a way to make them feel better about off-book wars while giving massive tax cuts that did nothing to create jobs but made the rich a whole lot richer?

That is the opening salvo on the GOP attempts to further slash and burn the safety net - starting with Social Security. Just you watch.

No, but I always identify myself as a village trustee and a Democrat. They ask for some little vignette about yourself, but there is no requirement to identify by party.

The question I posed to him was a statement and a question: I praised him for standing up against Donald Trump, and I asked about his long-term goals for the Veterans Administration as I am a disabled veteran.

Funny how every time my senators (Fischer, Sasse) or my representative (Adrian Smith) has one of these telephonic town halls, shortly after I mention I am a Democrat the call is cut off to me.

It is as if they feel they only represent Republicans, not all the citizens of Nebraska (or in the case of Smith, the rural area).

Thank you Senator Sasse for showing you only care about Republicans and not all your constituents.

That’s how I feel about Governor Abbott of Texas hash tagging TCOT on Twitter.

Latest from local Israeli news outlets: 3 people confirmed dead, 4 wounded badly, 1 in critical condition in the wake of terrorist shooting attack in a prominent Tel Aviv shopping area.
Police are everywhere here in search of suspected accomplices of the two assailants, who are reported as having been neutralized.
The site of the attack was the Sarona mall in Tel Aviv, which is Israel’s largest indoor shopping area and pretty much one of the most popular shopping spots in the country, if not the most popular.

Oh Hugh…

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt said on Wednesday that the Republican National Committee should ask Donald Trump to withdraw his candidacy or change the convention rules to prevent his formal nomination.

“The Republican National Committee needs to step in and step up and talk to him about getting out of the race,” Hewitt said on the Hugh Hewitt Show.

The alternative, he said, is a guaranteed victory for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton — and the loss of Republican control of both houses of Congress.

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. — Clayton Litten was sitting on his toilet, admiring his newly tiled bathroom floor when he first saw it.

“This cannot be. There’s no way,” Litten said when he saw the image — “clear as day.”

An image of presidential candidate Donald Trump, standing with arms folded, emerged from the tile floor.

By saying I am a Democrat, it lets me know if they are truly interested in all their constituents or just Republican voters. Cutting me off lets me know the real deal here.

If the line was dropped once, I could chalk it up to a technical problem or whatnot. When it happens every time, that looks a bit more like screening callers for the ones they like.

The way these phone town halls work is they record the caller and play back the call for the senator or representative. Therefore everyone listening hears the exact statement or question from the caller from their own mouth.

It is not censorship (by a strict definition), but letting the listeners only hear others parroting their views through questions seem like a good way to appear that Nebraska is one monolith of Republican voters.

That said, Senator Sasse did mention Representative Brad Ashford (D) by name, but only in the sense you could vote him out if you didn’t like what he stands for.

You know what, fuck Rage Furby. Everyone one us has a parent, grandparent, great grandparent, etc who had a parent who was not born in this country. In fact, I’m reasonably positive that my great grandmother was positive with my grand uncle when she came from Slovenia. And you know what my grand uncle did? He later served in the Untied States Army during WWII as did two of his other brothers and my grandfather the youngest served in Korea. Curiel is an American. He has served this country honorably and the attacks on him need to stop. His only “crime” was for having been Mexican-American and being given the case of Rage Furby’s spiritual father (Trump).

Letter submitted to the Scottsbluff (NE) Star-Herald; let’s see if they print it (so far I am six-for-six):

Senator Ben Sasse held a telephonic town hall today (June 8). As a concerned citizen, I always try to participate in these calls from our senators and representative.

I will always identify myself as a Democrat, but I do not ask “gotcha” question. My question for Senator Sasse was what his opinion was on how to fix the Veterans Administration (as I am a disabled vet).

Every call I have received since I moved to Nebraska, the phone call was cut off. If it were a one-off, I might chalk it up to technical issues. As every call has been cut off, I can only presume that Senator Fischer, Senator Sasse, and Representative Smith are running their calls as if they were right-wing radio talk shows.

Our senators and representative represent all Nebraskans, not just the Republican ones. If they are afraid of the hard questions that come from outside their comfort zone (and my questions are hardly that, just that I identify as a Democrat), then how can they represent everyone? They were not elected to represent the GOP, they were elected to represent Nebraskans.

Because it’s always possible that guns could get smuggled into Israel, or that someone was able to steal a firearm from someone who legitimately had them.

It’s been a long time since there was a terror shooting in Israel, for many of the reasons you noted - the fence, strict gun control, etc. It’s also why the recent attacks have been of the stabbing variety or a handful of bombing type attacks.

It’s been a long time since there was a terror shooting in Israel, for many of the reasons you noted - the fence, strict gun control, etc. It’s also why the recent attacks have been of the stabbing variety or a handful of bombing type attacks.

They do seem to have made great strides in preventing terrorist attacks.

re: #165 Anymouse

Excellent!

One person dead and three others wounded at shooting near Boston school

One person has been killed and multiple people have been wounded in a shooting at the Burke School in the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester, according to multiple reports. Police are still looking for the shooter, who has not been publicly identified.

*snip*

The shooting apparently happened after a fire alarm had been pulled in the school, and the shooting occurred as students were filing out of the building.

OT I guess but it’s sort of a post and run. Haven’t been able to post much lately, just been lurking and working. One of the implications of Trump’s attack on the judiciary will be that minorities may not have full and fair access to the courts to seek justice. In a case pitting a minority individual or minority owned business against anybody else could face a judge or a system in which being a minority is inherently at a disadvantage.

Good grief! Freeper nikos1121 goes full frontal with the mythical past. Still a good exposition of how these people think.
Hillary, I agree, “Trump’s idea of making America great again, means taking America backwards.”

I remember that America very well. It was an America of the 50’s when Trump was growing up, and so were you and so was Bernie. Did you forget?

It was a time…

When Americans had pride about themselves, and dressed nice to go out in public.

When you could leave your front doors unlocked if you wanted to and not worry about it.

When children in school learned about the history of our country and proud to say the pledge of allegiance each morning.

When people immigrated here legally and proud the day they became citizens of our country.

When marriage was between a man and a woman.

When the word gay meant happy and a joint was a bad place to be.

When socialism was a dirty word and free enterprise meant, thinking and growing rich through an idea and hard work.

When a buck was still silver.

When a girl could still cook, and still would.

When ghettos were neighborhoods with sidewalks where people mingled on warm summer nights.

When the American Flag was a respected symbol and never burned.

When criminals actually went to jail.

When you were not afraid to go out at night.

When television was free.

Er, no. Happy Days is a work of fiction. Besides, outside of Anytown USA there were social, political, artistic, and scientific developments well under way in the 50s that would change the world. There is a lot more at the link if you can stand it.

Seems the Turkish president has been taking lessons from The Donald

Women who choose careers over motherhood are trailblazers in some parts of the world. But in Turkey they’re “deficient” — at least according to the nation’s president.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s declaration that such women were “half persons” is the latest in a series of remarks by the leader of a key U.S. ally that has sparked outrage and fear among liberals and human rights activists, who allege he’s leading the country down a path to conservative Islam.

“A woman who abstains from maternity by saying ‘I am working’ means that she is actually denying her femininity,” Erdogan said in a widely reported speech in Istanbul on Sunday.

“A woman who refuses maternity and gives up housekeeping faces the threats of losing her freedom. She is lacking and is a half [a person] no matter how successful she is in the business world,” he said according to excepts of the speech translated by the Hurriyet Daily News newspaper.

On May 30, Erdogan — who was prime minister for 11 years before becoming president in 2014 — said Muslim families should not engage in birth control or family planning. He has come out against cesareans, equated birth control with treason, and opined that women should avoid laughing in public — all the while using his strong Muslim faith to justify his ideas.

Er, no. Happy Days is a work of fiction. Besides, outside of Anytown USA there were social, political, artistic, and scientific developments well under way in the 50s that would change the world. There is a lot more at the link if you can stand it.

Also, a time when…

We taxed the everloving fuck out of rich people,

Unions were strong and strikes were frequent,

The average guy wouldn’t cross a picket line because he identified with the worker and knew that increasing his wages would help everyone,

The wealthy were viewed with healthy skepticism, not worshipped.

And for those not white, straight, Christian, or male, a time when…

A married couple could be prohibited from buying contraception,

A gay man or woman could be jailed for consensual sex, or beaten with impunity,

Blacks in many states couldn’t vote, or eat at the same lunchcounter with whites, or go to the best schools, or go to a good hospital,

“Marital Rape” was a nonsensical phrase,

Yeah, just a PARADISE.

I wonder if the idyllic nostalgia-choked “America” of nikos1121’s imaginary past includes stringent enforcement of plagiarism laws, ‘cuz I’ve seen lists like this elsewhere: all pretty much the same trite catalog of golden-tinged, idealized nonsense.

Except for the “free television”. I could easily get behind a return to the principle of “free public access to public airwaves” - only it would have to be with today’s 1000+ channels, not the maximum seven or eight we had in the ’50s…..

If you have a beer museum your town needs no other attractions!

Good evening Lizards! Left the town with the beer museum late this morning after visiting it. Got to Bastogne in mid-afternoon with only one detour due to flooding along the Meuse River. Weather was rainy-drizzly, but it cleared up during the afternoon. Visited a museum and a few memorials there and then we headed west. Spending the night in Rochefort - and the Trappist monks here make a first class beer!

:)

Goal for the rest of the week is working west towards Normandy. Might make it back into France tomorrow, or maybe just spend another day in Belgium.

I remember that America very well. It was an America of the 50’s when Trump was growing up, and so were you and so was Bernie. Did you forget?

It was a time…

When Americans had pride about themselves, and dressed nice to go out in public.

Don’t remember that.

When you could leave your front doors unlocked if you wanted to and not worry about it.

You still can. Crime rates are down.

When children in school learned about the history of our country and proud to say the pledge of allegiance each morning.

They still learn about our history and the were always forced to say the pledge.

When people immigrated here legally and proud the day they became citizens of our country.

They’re still proud to become citizens. It’s the right wingers who aren’t proud.

When marriage was between a man and a woman.

Whether they liked it or not.

When the word gay meant happy and a joint was a bad place to be.

Don’t remember a time like that.

When socialism was a dirty word and free enterprise meant, thinking and growing rich through an idea and hard work.

Socialism is still a dirty word and an idea and hard work will still get you rich.

When a buck was still silver.

What’s so great about that? A buck is/was a buck.

When a girl could still cook, and still would.

Again, what’s so great about that? Women can do so much more now than then.

When ghettos were neighborhoods with sidewalks where people mingled on warm summer nights.

People never stopped mingling on warm summer nights. Look around.

When the American Flag was a respected symbol and never burned.

It’s still a respected symbol. Nobody bothers to burn Russian flags.

When criminals actually went to jail.

Everybody goes to jail, whether they’re criminals or not.

When you were not afraid to go out at night.

Not that many people cowering in their houses. See above. Look around.

When television was free.

It still is.

Bloomberg: Trump thinks he doesn’t need to raise $1 Billion

Josh Marshall, TPM: Poor House Donald Strikes again

On both sides of the aisle, virtually every other campaign in the country gets swept along in the tide of spending coordinated between the presidential campaign and the candidate’s party: voter registration, mobilization, election day turnout, TV ad saturation. Most campaigns which aren’t in very safe districts or uncontested races rely heavily on that spending as a supplement to their own.

If it’s not there, or there in a dramatically reduced amount, that could have a big impact on congressional, gubernatorial and state legislative elections. Politico for instance says that Trump and the RNC may struggle to raise even $300 million.

What’s the problem? There seem to be three main issues. First is that Trump is starting very, very late. At this point in the cycle Romney had been raising big big dollars for months, with that billion dollar figure as the goal. If Trump got up to Romney’s clip today he’d still fall massively short. Second is that the donor class really, really doesn’t like Trump (temperamentally, ideologically, etc) and questions why they should open their wallets for another billionaire.

Here Trump probably wishes he could admit that he’s only worth a few hundred million. But whatever … For all sorts of reasons, the donors aren’t terribly inclined to give. And third, Trump doesn’t seem either eager to ask for the money or temperamentally capable of doing so.

In typical Trumpian fashion he resolves this by saying and probably believing that he doesn’t need the money in the first place.

That’s not how this works. The billion dollar figure isn’t whipped up out of whole cloth. And it’s not just for ads. Absent a GOP wave election, which seems all but unimaginable, this could hurt congressional Republicans quite a bit.

I happen to believe that lowering the top marginal tax rates provided the incentive for the 1% to suck the cash out of their businesses rather than pay their employees or otherwise reinvest it in their businesses. If you were going to have to pay most of that profit back to the government you might as well spread it around to the employees. But now that you can keep almost all of it, it’s time to pull as much profit as humanly (and inhumanely) possible.

The RNC also needs a large golden statue of the Trumpfuhrer.

The statue must be on a rotating base such that it always faces the sun.

The statue must depict Trump’s heroic manliness. Michelangelo’s ‘David’ is an acceptable starting point, although some changes will be needed.

Thus should the party of bigots, fool, zealots and cranks honor their spiritual leader.

So, basically this should be what the statue of the Trumpführer looks like….in marble, of course:

Even when the top marginal rate was 90% the rich managed to pay the same effective rate. If you look at a chart of effective tax rates over time there was a short bump for a year or two after the rates hit 90% before the rich figured out how to protect their money from Uncle Sam.

At the factory I used to work, the employers paid the employees far more in the 50s and 60s than they did in the later years. (Fascinating thing is that they saved every single record ever generated.) The heyday of the business was the 50s and 60s. They had the most employees then and the most customers. The employees generally made about $8-$10 an hour. However, the distributions they were taking in the 70s and 80s would have curled your toes. Every other week they were pulling out 30K. They were rich in the 50s too, but man did they rake it in later. The employees were still making 8-10 an hour.

Just got off the phone with the local VA clinic.

I have been fighting for two months to obtain sufficient Phenobarbital (for my epilepsy) for my trip to Canada. Apparently there is a pharmacist at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center who has a bug up his ass and doesn’t want to issue more than thirty tablets at a time (Phenobarbital is a controlled substance).

I have also been in contact with Health Canada over the issue when it became apparent that the VA was going to obstruct my medications. They told me if I ran into a problem with the VA I could present myself in a Canadian health clinic and they could authorise a prescription for the medication though I would have to pay for it (fortunately, Phenobarbital is very inexpensive).

When I got more obstruction from the local clinic, I noted that in my trip last year to Europe I had to depend on a friend from Switzerland who is a physician to get me the necessary quantity of medication for my trip. I decided to pass on going after the VA.

Not this time. I told her that if the VA obstructs my travel again, I would see a lawyer to sue the VA over obstructing my right to Freedom of Travel (as found by the Supreme Court) and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

She started in with “it isn’t my fault - bureaucracy blah blah blah.” No. She is my primary care provider, as such my care should be her concern. She will be in any complaint I make to a lawyer, just as the Cheyenne pharmacy will.

She said she will have this resolved by tomorrow. Let’s see if that happens.

The unredacted names included university and hospital researchers and employees of both StemExpress and Planned Parenthood, raising major concern among Democratic members of the House.

re: #327 Eric The Fruit Bat

It took a long time for the Navy to settle on Phenobarbital as my medication. I have been stable on the drug since 1995, when the Navy finally settled on it as a last resort.

I am allergic as it turns out to both Dilantin and Gabapentin. Fun fact: All the drugs for epilepsy other than barbitals and Gabapentin are Dilantin analogues. Thus, I am allergic to every drug except Phenobarbital, Seconal, &c.

The Navy wasn’t real big on prescribing Phenobarbital, as it is considered a drug that can be diverted to the illicit market and is addictive. However, when it turned out that it was the only drug that would work, the Navy (then the VA) chose that as my medication.

The VA will not change my medication when it is working effectively, thus without good reason they are not going to change my prescription, despite the debilitating effects of Phenobarbital (it promotes Dupuytrens Contratcures in those susceptible, and I have had four hand surgeries already). Since pharmaceutical companies are uninterested in creating new classes of medications for epilepsy (they only create more analogues of Dilantin), Phenobarbital is the med I have to take.

One of the unsung victories of President Obama’s first term was when Lundbeck Pharmaceutical (a Danish firm) threatened to cut off sales of all barbital drugs to the United States, because Oklahoma and Virginia had used Phenobarbital (its drug) for executions in violation of EU civil rights law. President Obama jumped in on behalf of those suffering from epilepsy to preserve the drugs’s legitimate use.

I saw one of those videos about Adventure Time the other day and there were two interesting facts. One was that an executive liked the pilot but didn’t want to do the show because, in his view, Cartoon Network didn’t do art shows. He got overruled.

The second one was that some part of Cartoon Network tried to get rid of Princess Bubblegum and Marcelline because, in his words, they didn’t need to appeal to girls.

These facts would explain the constant bombardment of Teen Titans Go.

More on my drug (which causes the VA so much consternation): As part of the agreement between Lundbeck Pharmaceutical and President Obama, a Phenobarbital prescription can only be issued in a state with the death penalty if the patient signs (every time) an affidavit that says the person will not illegally divert the drug to the state corrections facilities.

Thus, every thirty days I have to sign such a statement. (Though Nebraska has repealed the death penalty, it does not apply to the eight people already on death row.)

The right’s scapegoat: Renee Ellmers’ primary loss in North Carolina encapsulates the irrational rage fueling conservatives

Another big issue was Ellmers supposedly being too soft on rape victims. Last year, when Republicans went on their annual spree of passing go-nowhere anti-choice bills, Ellmers raised objections to one bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks, on the grounds that there was no exception for rape victims.

To be clear, she wasn’t overcome with pity for women who might be forced to carry rape-caused pregnancies to term. Nor was she opposed to forcing women to give birth even if their fetuses had terrible abnormalities or the pregnancies would cause disability or blindness. She just worried that a male-d0minated party being so hostile to rape victims might be bad optics, saying that the anti-victim stuff was not being “smart about how we’re moving forward”.

No matter. Her perceived softness on rape victims was enough to make her public enemy #1 in anti-choice circles. The SBA List— which was conceived as an anti-choice alternative to Emily’s List — endorsed Holding over Ellmers. Like Club for Growth and Americans for Prosperity, SBA List made an example out of Ellmers, dumping tons of resources on this primary election to send the message that even the perception of pity for rape victims would be treated as an unforgivable caving in to the forces of “political correctness”. Now anti-choice press is crowing about how they ousted “traitor” Ellmers.

A good diary on what Sanders is going to have to decide, and how fast at Daily Kos. A piece:

f Sanders does not cash in his chips soon the value will continue to decrease as he holds out. Make no mistake Sanders had a lot of support, but the majority are not “Bernie or Bust folks.” Most supporters are democrats who will unite with or without him telling them. Sanders holing out will not keep them from getting to work to defeat Trump. This is something Clinton knew of her group in 2008. The PUMAS is where Obama had to do the most work to gain support. This is not a problem Clinton has to deal with on her own regarding Berners. The President will be able to bring a lot of these folks on board. Young voters and first time voters will not be a huge challenge for team Clinton once the President hits the trail. Rebuilding his coalition is what he wants to get out and do. A lot of his coalition is the Bernie coalition. I would argue that the President is still the best campaigner the party has and this is not just about Clinton for him. This is personal, this is his legacy.

As far as my neurologist is concerned, he is not going to change my medications when I have only had one breakthrough seizure since 1995. As long as the current medication works and is not causing any harm (other than the pesky Dupuytrens Contractures that have fouled up my hands), there seems no reason to change it just for the benefit of change.

One of the interesting details of the movie Titanic was when Cameron showed the movie to executives, one of them said that it would only appeal to half the population. Cameron said, “I wish I could get half the population.” From a business point of view alone, excluding females is just stupid.

I remember some of the good stuff the originator of the list remembered too.

Of course I was 6 years old and had no real understanding of the world. And being young I was protected from a lot of the reality of the times. So yeah, it was ideal. I was alive!

Now I see things from when I was younger exactly like your list.

Funny how reality changes when you grow older. You learn more and more about the good and bad in everything. You also learn you were damn naive when you were younger and how you viewed things was in the eyes of a younger person living in the good times.

Many people never seem to ever get past their view of their ideal time and they always want to go back. I bet some of their parents in the 50s/60s were not seeing everything as so great and they too were probably looking back 30 years or so and saying things were great then too.

Proper perspective versus distortion of reality.

When I first moved to Nebraska, I had to obtain my medication through a civilian pharmacy.

I went to my local pharmacy to fill the prescription, and they had to special order the drug. (No pharmacy in the county carries it.)

In chatting with the pharmacist, he told me the drug comes in 1,000 tablet bottles to pharmacies, and I was the only person that had ever ordered it.

I told him I felt bad that he had to order a thousand tablets to fill my thirty tablet prescription (for two different sizes of Phenobarbital).

He shrugged it off: He noted that a thousand tablets of either size (1 and 1/2 grains or 1/2 grain) is only $7 to him.

Most of the charge he passed off to me was the additional handling of the medication. Even then, I paid less than $10 for each of my prescriptions.

Sure sign they are eating their own. It appears there may be a lot of cannibalism going on this year. The Republican party is either going to end up more entrenched in recent makeup, go through profound changes or break into two or more other parties.

It really cannot go on the way it is. It seems many in the party are seeing it that way so there is going to be a ton of movement and positioning going on.

Interesting times ahead politically.

KSP Troopers say that cameras equipped with explosive devices were placed in wooded areas in Harlan County.

They are asking for the public’s assistance for information on who is placing these cameras in Harlan County.

Police believe the owner of the cameras put the explosives on them to keep people from stealing the cameras.

The big thing that many people seem to be missing (except around here!) is Trump still was voted in by a whole heck of a lot of the party base. Those folks now seem to have gotten a candidate that really does speak for them.

That in it itself is enough to either change the party drastically or split from the established because they are still going to be courted by some type of conservative group/party. The established GOP is going to want them either controlled or gone.

The people that make up the party are the key. They are not happy. They are the people that say the party is not conservative enough (TeaParty) and they are not going away. They really have the power now and that is what is going to cause the turmoil for the party.

At this point the actual party politicians are not in control.

Scott Walker: Trump donation was not accompanied by any Trump University conversations

A $10,000 campaign donation from Donald Trump came with no expectations related to his embattled Trump University, Gov. Scott Walker said Wednesday.

“No,” Walker told the Cap Times when asked whether Trump had ever spoken with him about Trump University or the possibility of Wisconsin residents launching complaints against the program. “No. Really, other than offering his support when he supported me in the past, I had no other conversations.”

Trump gave Walker’s gubernatorial campaign $10,000 — the maximum allowed under Wisconsin’s campaign finance law — on June 23, 2014. Four months later, a federal court allowed a class action lawsuit against Trump’s for-profit education company to expand from three states to a nationwide class of all students who had purchased live event seminars from the program since Jan. 1, 2007.

A representative from Zeldes Haeggquist & Eck, LLP, co-counsel on the lawsuits against Trump University, confirmed to the Cap Times that about a dozen class members in the lawsuit are from Wisconsin.

Months later, Walker proposed entirely eliminating the state board charged with overseeing for-profit schools in Wisconsin in his two-year state budget

Senator Goldwater warned about inviting the Evangelicals into the party on the Senate floor in 1981, and then the GOP went further and courted the Tea Party thinking they could control them both.

Turns out that when a majority of a party’s voters have a different agenda than the party, they will take it over.

Yeah, I wouldn’t be overquick to write up that Death Certificate just yet. The US has a fairly stable (and inertia-heavy) two-party system which hasn’t changed much in about 150 years. I think it more likely that the GOP is fated not to break apart, but morph into a multiple-personality Party, with its plutocratic, libertarian, religious-nut and Generic Angry Teabagger wings coexisting in uneasy coalition with each other: but coming together when need be ( at election time) to fight the “real enemy” - i.e., anybody Not Them.

The Democrats got along for about a century as a national Party with two separate (regional) wings that could scarcely stand each other; I think today’s Republicans (unfortunately) can probably contrive a way to get along as well.

I feel you. I graduated two years ago and I still haven’t been able to find a job.

Supposedly there are college benefits for veterans.

As it turns out, if the Veterans Administration deems you “unemployable” (as I was after the Navy diagnosed me with epilepsy), you lose your promised college benefits. (The VA administers a test to see which college programmes you would best be suited for: I scored highest in physics, chemistry, and mathematics. I have a friend who was in a motorcycle accident and has a mile of wire holding his spine together who got a VA paid trip to CERN in Switzerland as an intern for his degree, but I was told I could not be employed.)

So I live on my VA disability. Fortunately I live in an area it is really cheap to live in (no Broadway shows here, but you don’t always get what you want). My friend is now a professor in Texas. Even he thinks I got a raw deal.

One of the reasons I only use cash. My wife and I bought our new car and our house with saved money and no credit. If we don’t borrow, lenders don’t own our souls.

Completely impossible where I live. I have to live where I can get a job doing what I do, and the area with the most jobs of that kind just happens to be about the most expensive housing market in the US.

I will point out that it’s possible to use things like credit cards and not go into debt. The credit card companies may not be all that fond of people who use them that way, but it is legal.

Whether buying a house with a mortgage is the right decision I leave up to each person to make for themselves. It worked out for us. We are, however, rather more financially disciplined than I think the average American is.

How glorious for you.

Not glorious: My house is only worth $18,000. My car new was $13,000. That took almost all of our saved money.

For that, we get to live on the High Plains in a village of 128 people (127, there was a funeral Saturday).

You’re welcome to move to Western Nebraska if you like. I don’t know where you live, but housing does not cost hundreds of thousands of dollars everywhere in the country.

Of course you would have to put aside a snobbish view of rural living and ranching and farming, but I am sure you can do that.

True story and I just learned about this a couple days ago. I had a Discover Card which I canceled and paid off (or so I assumed) back in 2013. A couple of months ago I got a call from a collection agency about unpaid debt from a Discover Card (about $900) I told them “What are you talking about, I paid that off three years ago, show me the proof.” A couple days ago I get a package, old statements, I see a payment made in 2/2013 of $1,233.66 and a balance of $00.01, the next month there is a $25.00 late fee and so on at 29% interest. I owe close to $900.00 on one cent principle plus interest and late charges. Mother Fuckers. I’m going to fight this but I am not sure how yet.

One of the reasons I only use cash. My wife and I bought our new car and our house with saved money and no credit. If we don’t borrow, lenders don’t own our souls.

If you use credit as a 30 day loan, and pay off the bill before interest is accrued, you will do well. I have my 2 credit card that pay me a percentage back, and they monitor my charges immediately. I have my Iphone hooked to my Amex card and every transaction is announced on my phone. My other is Amex through Costco which will now become Capital One Visa. Then I have a debit card that is totally safe. I had two “compromises” in my life, and never lost anything. The entire trick is to live within your means. can’t go drinking champagnes on a beer paycheck. I made good money when I worked and my house has been paid off about 18 years. When I worked, paying down the mortgage was #1. Everything else was second. You have to have a solid relationship and discipline. Reward yourselves once in awhile, but it’s pay me now, or pay me later. That is the one truth.

You do not have to live in the most expensive housing market because your job and training supposedly require that (it is rationalisation on your part). You can choose to do whatever you want.

I have a friend who was offered a job for Web design at Cabela’s main office in Sidney, Nebraska. He lived in Kalispell, Montana and couldn’t afford it any longer.

He turned down the job in Sidney because it didn’t pay enough. (It started at $60,000 per year.) That amount of money would put you in the top 2% of my county.

The real issue is he didn’t understand that living in a tourist trap like Kalispell is not the same as living in another part of the country. He refused the job.

He is now unemployed and begging me for money, scraping by in Chicago and bothering my mother there. I’ve told him to leave her alone and he was an idiot to turn down the job in Sidney. Pesky personal responsibility how does it work?

Whether buying a house with a mortgage is the right decision I leave up to each person to make for themselves. It worked out for us. We are, however, rather more financially disciplined than I think the average American is.

For almost everyone, almost everywhere, there’s no reasonable probability of buying a house without a mortgage. SO, you’re basically deciding whether you want to pay a mortgage or pay rent.

In the Bay Area, for most of the 34 years I’ve lived here, and for the preceding 50 years, prices have been rising. Sometimes fast, sometimes REALLY fast. Occasionally there’s a pause. Maybe even a slight retreat, but then it’s on the march again.

Rents are the same, with a bit of back-and-forth.

In a market like this, if you can, it makes sense to buy as soon as it’s possible, as long as you’re not in a bubble. It’s the only way to lock in your housing costs. There’s very little rent control in most of the Bay Area, so you’re at the mercy of landlords - and they might have just bought the property for a lot of money, and the rents minus the costs have to pay the mortgage. Find yourself in that position and try to not lose money by raising rents, and you get featured on the news as a moneygrubbing bastard who wants to kick an old lady out on the street.

Also: if you had ANY balance still owing on your card, they should have sent you a statement for the next period (after paying it off), even if it was only for one cent. Unless, say, you moved and didn’t give Discover a forwarding address, there’s no excuse for them not to have dunned you for the “balance” right away.

You might also check with your State, if they have something like a Consumer Protection Department (or whatevs) - here in New York the State CPB is pretty good about standing up for consumers - especially with bank and credit-card stuff. But then, this is a more-or-less civilzed part of the country….

Well, buying a house without a mortgage depends on where you are buying a house.

Since I don’t want to live in Hollywood (where my sister lives), I don’t have a mortgage. She will die before her mortgage is paid off but hey, she gets to live in California.

Screw that. She is trapped working six and a half days a week trying to keep up her bills and is bitter that I am not doing the same. (My sister and I have a great deal of angst between us.)

In the meantime, my wife and I can use saved money and no loans (even though we only live on my VA disability) to take vacations every year. My sister and my cousins are all bitter that I should have such a benefit (because I choose to live in an area I can afford).

Perhaps if I had been allowed the college benefit I was supposedly promised in the military I could have a career that pays more than an unpaid village trustee in a backwater town in nowhereville USA. I do not envy my sister and cousins their lifetime mortgages and credit problems. They chose that, they could live in a place like I do where their mortgage payment for a month would pay a year’s rent here.

Whining, how does it work? The only thing I whine about is being refused my earned college benefits for my military service.

I hate financial choices topics these days. We’ve not done so well since moving from the midwest/Kentucky to New England. While my salary went up a few thousand, the cost of living here not only erased that but set us back. But we still want to do for our kids what we had intended: activities that cost money. Fine. We can handle it if we pare down. Then I need the tooth implant. Then we need a newer car. If we had this combined income in Kentucky or Indiana where we lived before—no problem. Now I’m in unfamiliar territory: credit card debt. Ironically, because I pay a huge chunk each month, our credit score is better than ever. But new unexpected expenses keep happening. I’m probably making what my dad made as a middle-class male 40 years ago, but he could do a few things and still stay out of debt and pay for retirement.

Damn. No wonder I favored Bernie early on. Anyway, I know that New England has long been more expensive, so it has nothing to do with the president. We have to cut some things out (and, no, I still haven’t cut our cable access to international soccer…).

Hence “almost everyone, almost everywhere”.

For a lot of people it’s a balancing act: where can you get a job that you enjoy (hopefully) that pays enough to cover your projected expenses and hopefully be able to set some aside and be happy to live?

Some people make stupid decisions (unsurprisingly) and end up in debt or stuck with a job they’re miserable with in order to live somewhere they thought would make them happy. Sometimes shit just happens to people trying to make reasonable decisions in the first place. Life can really suck in that regard.

Sure, mr. klys and I could move to rural Nebraska. We’d be able to afford one hell of a house. His job would probably let him switch to working remotely, although there would be a pay cut involved. But if something happened and his job disappeared, we’d be stuck looking for jobs where he could continue to work remotely. Where we are right now, there’s plenty of positions he could look at and years’ worth of contacts we could rely on.

Trump benefited from the GOP’s plurality “winner take all states.” Mr. Trump, especially in the initial contests, won with a fraction of the “not-Trump” vote.

If there had not been seventeen candidates in the GOP Primary, we would not be looking at a fascist talking yam as the candidate of one of our nation’s major political parties.

The Republican party is the party of oligarchy. re: #525 Blind Frog Belly White

I’m a Scientist, particularly a Molecular Biologist. I get paid pretty well and it’s interesting work, and it’s what I trained to do and have done for 35 years. I’m pretty good at it, at least all the companies I’ve worked for seem to think so. I’m also not sure what else I could stand doing as a job.

One reason to live where I do is that the nature of the industry is that there are a lot of failed companies, which lasted between 5 and 20 years, but in the end couldn’t make a go of it. Or the DID make a go of it, and a bigger company bought them and laid off most or all of the staff. It can happen pretty suddenly. When it does, you want to be in a place with a lot of OTHER companies who might hire you.

Mrs. FBW and I have talked about where else we could live, but the problem is always, “What if I take a job there, and that company folds?” We are not the kind of people who like moving, so we’re strongly disinclined to take risks like that.

I used to hang at a sports-related blog where the common response to things like Ferguson and south Chicago was “why don’t they [those lazy ….] just move!?” I would explain things they already knew: support networks existing here and not existing in the mysterious there (maybe), lack of information, but most importantly, the cost of a move that is so hard for anyone who is not getting help from a new employer. And then I’d get a bunch of “yeah, but”s from middle-class white runners (like me) who never suffered (like me) the violence of poverty. I finally left. They have disconnect.

But I have disconnect, too. I’ll admit that I have sleepless nights now because of being being statistically middle-class paycheck to paycheck at the moment, but I also know that the cold hard truth is that we are trying to live middle class lives that we can’t really entirely afford. It’s hard to re-budget. I want to contribute here, for example. But our lives are nibbled by so many new expenses in this economy that our parents never faced. Ok, I’m going to give it a rest.

Thanks for letting me vent.

I think that’s what the effort is going to be. I say liken the Senate Republicans running to him. It’s not like Trump’s attacks on Curiel were the first time he’s been an asshole to someone different than him.

But, the smart ones saw it as a risk of separation of powers. They’re spooked.

My poor mother married a wingnut last June and now she’s been brainwashed. She posted an opinion on Facebook the other day and I stopped reading it when the “liberal media” was mentioned.

The wingnut she married, about three years ago in a restaurant on Christmas day he could not stop telling anyone that would listen that he sold his house just in time before New Year’s so he wouldn’t have to pay the “Obamacare Real Estate Tax.” I muttered to myself “Bullshit” and googled it immediately on my phone. Turns out only like .01% of people qualified for it (we’re talking about the uber wealthy here), and the tax had already been in place since….January 1…of the same year.

The mind of the wingnut is a scary place.

I think Drumpf will utter something so completely and utterly insane in the next few days that the GOP will finally just throw in the towel and and try to save the senate. I will not be surprised if there is a mutiny in Cleveland in six weeks.

Unfortunately unlikely. No matter how insane the statement he makes, it will make headlines for a few days then go away. Between FOX, CNN and MSNBC, cable news will not permit Trump to be shown up as a fundamentally unserious and dangerous candidate. There are months to go before the election, and he must be legitimised to provide opinu-tainment and ratings for that time.

He will be neck and neck with Hillary the entire time. The real danger is for the narrative to become reality; ie. he is so constantly and consistently covered for and legitimised that the narrative of his inevitable coronation becomes the reality in the minds of voters, just as it did over the course of the Republican nomination.

My above mentioned friend is a firearms guy. So I asked him, what kind of restrictions on guns would be okay with you? He said things like background checks to ensure criminals don’t get them, etc. You know the things that Obama supports but the NRA fights tooth and nail. So I told him straight out “Well your position matches Obama” who you see as an enemy as firearm ownerhsip. I told him flat out that Obama if Obama knew talked to him and knew that he had no criminal record, he would have no objection to him owning guns. So much of wingnut propaganda is based on telling their audience that Obama, Clinton, and the left are out to get them. Whether that’s gun related, tax related, jobs related, is immartial. It’s how they operate.

I own a shotgun because I enjoy shooting defenceless skeet.

I also live sixteen miles from the sheriff office. If the only car the sheriff has is on the other side of the county, it is an hour from my home.

While urban areas such as New York or Chicago or San Francisco have quite a number of police, a rural area like my county covering thousands of square miles with only one sheriff and one deputy cannot police everywhere at once.

I do not know the solution for gun control, though I would favour both owner insurance and titles (similar to a house or car so when the firearm is transferred a record of its transfer is available). I am also in favour of hammering anyone who fails to report the theft of a firearm (surprisingly, as expensive as guns are, thefts are ofttimes not reported due to wingnuttery claiming the government has no right to know who owns what firearm. Screw that. I have no problem with the government knowing I own a shotgun - despite all the derp, the government is not going to seize my gun unless I prove myself a danger with it.)

Here’s the thing though regarding guns that I think many rural residents need to understand. Yes, I understand your rural area may not have a lot of crime but our rural areas do not exist independent of urban areas. When D.C, Chicago, and New York are attacked for their strict gun laws and the argument is made that “Hey they have strict gun laws and gun violence still happens there.” It’s not like you can’t travel from the district to Virginia to get a gun.

My favorite retort is “Why don’t we ban cars, cars kill more people than guns.” Cars are in fact heavily regulated and you need to take a test to get a license for one. In most places, all you need for a gun is to be over 18 and that’s it. No questions about criminal history or state of mind. Wingnuts want guns to eb easier to have than the ability to vote.

Heh tehy really do think that way. Honestly, I really do get why someone might want to own a gun for protection, hunting, and even shooting for hobby. Where I get lost big time are the guys who feel they need assault rifles at their homes. And yeah I know I’m going to get nitpicked on the specificness of the gun. I don’t honestly care. There’s no place for a civilian to own some of those weapons. I think if you want to have a gun range that is regulated and people can shoot them off for hobby, that’d be fine.

re: #682 Frankie Five Angels

How do you do the Trump bright yellow font?

*no spaces except between “color” and “GoldenRod”*

[ wingnut ][ color GoldenRod ] insert text [ / color ][ / wingnut ]

The wingnut tag will make the font into ComicSans. If you leave that out, it’ll just be the normal font we see in comments.

Agh the worst was that jerk who took his nine year old girl to fire an Uzi and she killed the instructor. It was fortunate that the little girl didn’t get hurt but she’s gotta live the rest of her life knowing she killed a man because her daddy thought it was a swell idea to give a nine year old an Uzi.

The worst of all frankly though is how whenever a Sandy Hook or Va Tech happens, tehy want the convesration to be about anything but access to guns. They really will blame anything else- feminism, homosexuality, video games, movies, music, Engle V Vitale (the decision that banned forced prayer in public school) before they even consider talking about guns.

I sincerely feel the 2nd Amendment could benefit from a 21st century and post industrial revolution evaluation. Plus, it doesn’t help that people hoard guns these days. In teh past, you may have ahd a gun or two but these guys now, they’er planning for an invasion.

As a collector, and I actually *mean* that (nearly everything I own is from WW2 or earlier back to pre-revolutionary war), I would take offense to my collection being referred to, or treated as, an “arsenal” other than in a humorous context. Or the act of collection referred to as “hording”.

The fact that I could survive a zombie apocalypse with a portion of it is a side bonus, not the primary goal.

I’m talking about the people who go out and buy another gun each time the NRA tells them that Obama/Clinton is going to abolish the second. I apologize if I caused any offense. I just think there are some people who could be called hoarders out there.

I own one gun (I can only shoot one at a time).

There was a time that the AAA fought in the early XX Century the absolute right to own a car without registration, because of the Supreme Court’s position on an absolute right to travel.

As the accidents and carnage piled up, gradually state courts then Federal courts saw the need for regulation of drivers.

The argument by II Amendment absolutists that “driving is not a Constitutional right” is false; for the first half-century of the automobile it was universally viewed as a right equal to the II Amendment.

It was consistent disregard for the safety of others that caused the courts to reign in the Wild West of driving, and after the Fifties no court case brought arguing a right to drive was upheld by the courts.

In theory the same rulings could be applied to gun ownership.

A fascinating history of the right to drive, from an absolute Constitutional right that could not be infringed to one of the most regulated activities today can be found in this wonderful history of the Right to Travel. Driving was considered an absolute right just as guns are now.

The difference between a ‘collection’ and an ‘arsenal’ is whether you have 1000 rounds for each different piece.

Thanks, that’s what I mean. If you have a Lugar (hey we were talking about BAnd of Brothers the otehr day) that your dad or grandpa got in WWII, that’s cool with me. If you’re constantly buying assault type weapons with tons of ammo and paranoid that the government is coming for your guns, I have a problem.

Overall, I just want there to be gun safety. I hear all the time about responsilbe gun owners but it feels like too often I read about a child either killing or maiming themselves or a friend or family member because Mom or Dad wasn’t responsible with guns. I hear al the time following tragedies about the responsible gun owners but it seems to me that there’s a lot of irresponsibility and I think the gun lobby hurts that rather than helps that.

Gotcha. I probably did come off a little judgmental there but I do strongly feel that some people aren’t collecting, they’re hoarding. You seem to have a genuine hobby and I respect that. Some of these people I think feed off being told that they’re going to lose their guns so they buy one in preparation for Obama announcing that he’s Hitler Jr.

Well, I don’t know why my PDF link showed the first page rather than provided a regular link to the entire document (instead giving a tiny print picture no one can read).

constitution.org. pdf

(Take out the space before pdf)

This is a fascinating history of how the car went from an absolute right to one of the most regulated aspects of modern life. Courts consistently came down on the right to drive without restriction, but as the carnage piled up, states saw the need for regulation.

If the II Amendment wingnuts don’t reign in their lunatics, the same could happen to guns. Autos were considered just as wild-and-wooley as guns are now. It was due to lack of self-regulation that auto owners lost their rights to unrestricted ownership and driving. Driving was once considered a constitutional right; now it is a privilege.

The document is well-worth reading.

No idea about him.

Just reminded me of this story fwiw

A reader tracked down one of the first mentions in the press of Sarah Palin. From the Anchorage Daily News, April 3, 1996:

Sarah Palin, a commercial fisherman from Wasilla, told her husband on Tuesday she was driving to Anchorage to shop at Costco. Instead, she headed straight for Ivana. And there, at J.C. Penney’s cosmetic department, was Ivana, the former Mrs. Donald Trump, sitting at a table next to a photograph of herself. She wore a light-colored pantsuit and pink fingernail polish. Her blonde hair was coiffed in a bouffant French twist.

”We want to see Ivana,” said Palin, who admittedly smells like salmon for a large part of the summer, ”because we are so desperate in Alaska for any semblance of glamour and culture.”

McCain gave Sister Sarah his credit card, Hillary has earned every freaking penny of that Armani.

re: #704 Stanley Sea

Repetitive disclaimer, I help run a massive shooting range. A big part of that job, and every employees job (dozens of them) is to make sure that stupid shit does not happen. We look at it like this-Our sport is always trying to be a zero accident sport. Somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 people out there are gun safety instructors by way of some organization nationally. Millions of guns, millions of people hunting, target shooting, cleaning, moving… We do our best. Range specific rules, Range Safety Officers, compliance with California laws..

We will never get to zero. Can’t snatch those guns back from gangs and felons. Can’t pour anger management into those on the edge of violence or suicide. All we can do is push for universal registration, safety and insurance requirements etc. Hard work, gotta push in two directions at least. Push back on the NRA and their ideological opposites that strongly share a welcoming attitude to unreasonable measures.

Just mouse over the window and there’ll be a box with a little arrow—“popout”. Click that and it’ll open the PDF in a new window. To download it to your computer rather than Google drive, you’ve got to click on the little up-arrow “open original” to get it in yet another window. Then hit download.
